Chapter 1
The king of Vegeta-sei looked into the star-lit sky as the day faded into the night his people preferred. He gave a grunt of greeting as his son joined him on the balcony overlooking the land they ruled, staring in anticipation at the horizon, where the full moon would soon be rising. He certainly did not have as much anticipation as the Prince beside him. It was going to be Vegeta-ou’s forty-second mooning, and he wasn’t really looking forward to it. Ever since the last Queen of Vegeta-sei had passed away five years ago every eligible daughter of every noble in court would constantly proposition him…in the not-so-subtle way of those changed to Oozaru.
Vegeta-ou chanced a glance at his son, watching the five-year-old heir rocking from toe to heel as black eyes latched onto the place the moon would rise, straight ahead of them. The castle had been built with that exact plan in mind: the entrance facing the moonrise, as if the kings of Vegeta-sei were paying homage to their God, Tsukiyomi.
The moon would then arc over the palace, hanging above the white-bricked structure to bless it with its light before setting behind it. His mate had always loved the moon, saying that for every time it rose and set, another day of Vegeta-sei’s reign would continue in splendor. She had died on a purge for—
No. Now was not the time to think of such things. Now was time to pay respects to the one that gave them power and strength over their enemies. Now was the time to praise the God of war and might. They would dance beneath him in their strongest forms, in the forms he had graced them with so long ago, when the planet had belonged to another people and the very first Vegeta had overthrown them utterly.
“You aren’t to leave the palace courtyard, Vegeta-ouji.”
He could hear his son roll his eyes. “Yes, Vegeta-ou. I am not to mix with the commoners. I wouldn’t want to if they were the only ones available for mating.”
Despite the disgusted sneer in his voice, his father turned to him with slightly widened eyes. “Tonight is not the night for a mating, Vegeta-ouji. You are much too young for it. This is your first mooning. You will use it to control your Oozaru state. Do you understand?”
The boy glanced off to the side, refraining from making a snide comment about his father not getting any not being an excuse to keep the son from it. Instead, he let out a sharp assent that made it clear he was not happy with the command.
Before Vegeta-ou could do more than frown at his recalcitrant son, a murmuring began beneath them, where the general populace of the court was also waiting for the moon. They and the royals would be the first to be graced with the moon’s rays. The commoners, behind the palace, would be the last to transform, as was proper.
Both son and father whirled their heads toward the horizon, watching with held breaths as the very tip of the blood-red moon peeked over the edge of the flat, almost desolate, copper-toned land. Slowly, inch by maddening inch, the moon showed itself to those waiting. The gathered Saiya-jins felt the rays’ effects began to pulse through their bodies, catching some kind of invisible rhythm that quickly entered their bloodstreams, until all they could feel was liquid fire in place of blood.
Vegeta-ouji tilted back his head, spiked hair setting up a profile and curving to a widow’s peak, the tanned skin of his exposed neck showing in stark relief as the moonlight hit it fully. His eyes were wide, not staring at the moon quite yet. He was just enjoying the feeling of absolute power coursing through him. Surely this was what Super Saiya-jin felt like. It couldn’t feel like anything else.
Despite his father thinking this was his first mooning, it wasn’t. Last year, when he had been put in an isolated chamber to wait out the mooning, he had managed to slip out, avoiding the guards and sneaking behind the palace. He had made it just in time for the moon to rise. Unfortunately, the high walls that the commoners had to wait for the moon to rise above blocked it. Vegeta-ouji was no commoner. So, he carefully flew up to a spire of the castle, staring in awe at the rusty globe of light that he had never before seen.
He’d had to drop down quickly when the rays had taken a hold of his body, his body aflame and his ki power dropping and changing into something else entirely. He had panicked at first, wanting nothing but to yell out for help as he’d landed on the ground. Then he’d heard the calls of the others.
He’d turned his head, nothing more, and felt himself slip from one reality into the next. There was no awareness in this reality. At least, not the kind he understood, or rather, had understood. Now he merely heard others of his kind, others to fight and hunt with. He gave his own roar of challenge and started out…in the opposite direction of the palace.
And that was when he had learned to control his form. He could feel himself on the fringes of his own awareness. And it was maddening to be that close to himself. So he had gathered all his will and wits together and concentrated, slowly feeling the Oozaru and the boy merge into one being that stilled immediately, blinking at the sight directly before him.
Two Oozaru, one a dark gray and the other with a silver sheen, were tearing into each other like the animals they were. Sensing the intruder, they both stopped and turned toward him, the silver one breaking off to approach.
Vegeta drew back, lips raised in a snarl that the other recognized as warning. The silver one sat back on his haunches as the gray one grew bored and left. After a few minutes of neither Oozaru moving, the silver one spoke. “I don’t recognize you. Who are you? What family?”
This was a low class, a commoner, and he was not going to answer. Lips tightly sealed, he merely narrowed red eyes at the other and moved to go around him. He was blocked by a furred body that stared deep into his eyes before letting out a low rumble. “You’re young. Is this your first mooning?” As he still didn’t answer, the other pushed himself forward, shoving his chest into the other’s with another rumble. “You don’t answer. Perhaps I can make you.”
Vegeta stumbled back a bit as two arms tried to grasp him before crouching down and letting out his own rumble, which was higher pitched than the others, but effective none-the-less. The silver one paused in its assault, cocking its head to one side. “I like you. You smell good and act strong.” Again he approached, but it was in a manner that made Vegeta’s back stiffen and his head rise in shock. The scent coming from the male was…strange. Not anything he had ever smelled before. And he didn’t like it.
Truly growling now, Vegeta again crouched down, tail lashing the air behind him. And that was when a different roar spilt the air. The silver one raised its head, scenting the air where the sound had originated. He growled something under his breath, spared Vegeta one more look that almost made him squirm, and turned to lope off in the opposite direction.
Vegeta stood there for a few minutes before finally relaxing and sitting down, looking around curiously and wondering what it all meant. Why had the other smelled funny, and why had he left when the roar had sounded? What had the two been doing beforehand?
Sighing, he turned back to the palace, just now realizing that he knew nothing about any of this. He had stayed within the palace walls, away from anyone who would’ve recognized him, until he changed back. It was then that he had studied for the answers to his questions for the next year…and gotten more than he had bargained for. He knew what moon mating was.
Now he tilted his head back down, fully aware of everything that would be happening to his body. He felt each individual hair start to grow and his muzzle elongate as his fangs sharpened and touched his lower lip. He slowly lifted off the balcony with the last of his ki without being told and felt himself fall to the ground below, fully changed by the time he had done so.
Ignoring those around him who greeted him with primal calls, Vegeta-ouji lumbered off to explore the courtyard. He had no intentions of mating. It was for those who wanted heirs or had the appetite for it and he neither had nor wanted either. He was just going to see what exploring turned up.
* * *
The feel of a furry length of warmth trickling up his thigh made the spiky-haired Saiyan-jin jerk and whirl around with raised lips as the offending tail fell away. He stopped short at the smirk he was receiving and gave the perpetrator a disgusted sneer. “What do you want, Radditz?”
The long-maned Saiyan-jin continued to smirk as he allowed his eyes to trail the ten-year-younger, darkly-tanned other. “Stupid question, stupid answer.”
Turles rolled his eyes and turned back to waiting with the other commoners behind the palace for the moon to rise. It was his third mooning and each and every time Radditz had been right behind him, stating in no uncertain terms that he wanted the other for mating. While his scent might have been attractive to Radditz, Radditz’s was not to Turles. Frankly, he stunk.
As the mood started to rise, he managed to sniff disdainfully at the man behind him, hearing an angry huff of air in response. He completely ignored the other and eagerly felt the change take hold of him. Oh, this time he planned on having a little fun, seeing what he could find if he just avoided everyone and went his own way. After all, there was a whole world to explore!
As he heard roars around him echo through the night air, he felt the not-so-welcome feeling of a much larger tail binding around his waist and pulling him into a burly and furred torso. Turles growled and turned his head to snap at the other, who merely chuckled and half-sang into his ear. “Tur-les. Guess what? I’m stronger than you and I’m tired of waiting. Tonight, that ass is mine.”
Turles bucked back against the weight around him, swinging his arms to keep Radditz from locking them to his sides with his own. He was serious! He was going to do it if Turles didn’t do something, and fast. Thinking quickly, the darker Saiyan snarled and filled both of his hands with ki, striking backwards blindly. There was a cry and Turles was free, quickly taking the opportunity to scurry off.
Radditz recovered quickly, heaving out a roar, and chasing after the other, who ran in any direction at all that he remembered didn’t end at a dead end, scurrying around and past the other Oozaru blindly.
Unfortunately, his memory was faulty. He turned a corner to find himself firmly wedged in by three castle walls and a hungry Saiyan behind him. Radditz was stronger than Turles, and he cursed it every time he’d imagined just this happening.
“Tur-les!”
Turles gave one moment for thought, one moment to think that he was going to regret doing this, before he leapt up, grabbing the top of the wall and vaulting himself into the palace courtyard.
He crouched in a landing position on the other side, feeling himself stop breathing as he heard the other Saiyan approach the dead end, nose audibly sniffing the air. The Saiyan continued to hold his breath until he heard confused mumbling from the other and the shuffling that signaled the other was leaving.
Leaning back on the wall, he breathed a sigh of relief and looked around. And he was in deep shit. Oh, he would’ve jumped right back over, taken his chances with running into Radditz again rather than risk being caught here. A commoner wasn’t welcome in noble territory.
Unfortunately, the Oozaru coming toward him had spotted him, and was obviously curious. Turles had to admire the silky sheen on the burgundy fur that lay over the smaller frame. He was…well, breath-taking.
“Who are you? I don’t recognize you.”
Turles felt his fangs sinking into his lower lip as he kept silent, feeling as trapped as he had with Radditz. He couldn’t speak. It would mean the other recognizing him if he’d ever heard him in regular form. As it was, he didn’t quite recognize the other.
Vegeta’s nostrils flared as he approached the steel-colored Oozaru before him. He didn’t recognize the scent of the other, and he knew every noble out tonight. His silence was…disturbing, and reminded him of his own on his first moon. He sat on his haunches, inspecting the other. It was possible—
“You aren’t supposed to be here. You’re supposed to wait another year for your first mooning.”
The statements actually made Turles sit on his haunches, the stone a coolness that was soothing to his back. For a moment, he thought that he’d been found out, but then the next sentence clicked and Turles calmed somewhat. He didn’t know why the other would assume that he wasn’t waiting until he was old enough to partake in a mooning, but he wasn’t about to dissuade him.
Vegeta nodded. “I thought so. You don’t have to worry. I did the same.” He grinned, flashing canines as his red eyes glinted mischievously. “This is actually my second mooning. What is your name?”
Turles felt his hackles rise, though he tried to stop them. He watched the other tense with anxiety, perking up at his reaction to the seemingly simple question.
Vegeta slowly calmed, smirking. “Are you afraid you’ll be punished if I recognize you after the mooning? “ He shrugged, getting up and moving toward the other. “Fine. Keep your secrets. They amuse me.”
Turles forced himself to stay still as the other approached him, circling him as much as he could with a wall at his back, which meant he paced back and forth in front of him, sniffing intently. He could feel the power from the other washing over him. It was huge! It was much bigger than Radditz’s.
Vegeta inhaled, almost pressing his nose into the fur that was like burnished metal. “Last year an Oozaru approached me with a…certain smell. I found out what it meant. Do you want to know?”
Turles felt himself paying attention to the other. His voice was so even, deep and commanding, yet it was still evident that he was a child, young. He nodded silently.
Vegeta smirked, leaning in toward the other’s ear. “He wanted to fuck me.” He leaned back and thoroughly enjoyed the look of shock on the other’s face. It was quickly replaced by fear, and the stench of it reached him clearly.
Vegeta wrinkled his nose, stepping back involuntarily from the sting in his nose. “Stop it! I have no intentions of mating with you! Idiot!”
And Turles did recognize the voice then. The voice of one who had constantly grumbled as he’d moved among the lower class with his father for inspections. It took all of his will to stop his pounding heart, to try to stop producing the scent that was irritating the Prince of all Saiyans. Bowing now would look…suspicious.
Vegeta raised a brow, satisfied when the scent broke off, though he could tell the other didn’t want to stop it. He sneered, moving closer to him again. He barely saw the flinch of a shoulder and stopped. “I said I didn’t want to! You don’t have those urges and neither do I.”
Turles comforted himself with that thought. He didn’t have the urges and he was older than the Prince, so the Prince wouldn’t have them either. When a Saiyan had the urges was unclear, but it usually didn’t happen in natural form for many years. Sometimes it happened in Oozaru earlier…much earlier. Some suspected it was simply the Oozaru form maturing before the natural one. Turles was just happy Vegeta-ouji wasn’t ready yet.
However, it was quite shocking when talon-ed fingers ran through the fur of his shoulder. He had to suppress a shudder. “Like cold steel. I’ve never seen fur this color before. It’s very nice.”
Turles blinked at the other. Had the prince just...complimented him? He mentally shrugged, raising a hand slowly and touching the other’s fur.
Vegeta’s brows raised again as he felt the other’s fingers shifting through his fur. “You like mine too?” It wouldn’t hurt to warm up to this young noble. When he did have the urges, he would want to find someone he could stand. At least this one didn’t stink.
Vegeta’s head snapped up as the distinct sound of a roar echoed off the walls. He grimaced in distaste before eyeing Turles speculatively. “You ever had an old sore you couldn’t get rid of?” He grinned at the other’s confused look. “My father’s coming.”
Turles’s eyes widened as Vegeta threw back his head and answered with his own roar. Red eyes met his own with amusement. “Unless you want to get caught, you’d better leave.”
Turles nodded once, took a last look at the Prince, and moved around him, quickly turning around a corner of the palace walls just in time to avoid the king. He leaned against the wall briefly, his heart pounding as it came to terms with his close call.
With a shake of his head, he leapt nimbly back over the palace walls and away.
