Summary:
Duo and Heero are two detectives, partners, best friends, and roommates. They
are currently on a case of a serial rapist/murderer. However, their
investigation is halted as Duo starts to believe he is being stalked.
Unfortunately, only Heero believes him. Is Duo really delusional or is his life
in danger? And if someone is stalking him, can he make anyone believe him
before it’s too late?
Chapter 1: The Nadeshiko Case
Duo Maxwell lounged on his satin covered bed as he chewed
on a donut with strawberry frosting and rainbow sprinkles. He sighed.
“This is the life…,” he murmured. “No paperwork, no Une bossing me around, no stress…,” he finished the donut
off with a cold glass of milk.
“Duo…,” he flipped on to his stomach and hugged his pillow
to him.
“Not now, can’t you see I’m relaxing?” He cuddled the
pillow.
“Duo…”
“I said not now!” He muttered.
“DUO!” *SLAM*
Duo shot awake as someone dropped an enormous pile of
papers and files right in front of him.
“Eeek!”
He screeched. He glared up at his partner.
“Yuy!
That was uncalled for!” Heero raised a dark brown eyebrow at him.
“Have a nice nap?”
“Bastard…,” Duo grumbled. Heero smirked.
“Do that work on the new case?”
Duo stuck his tongue out at him.
“For your information, yes I did. Ten young men and women,
each in between the ages of 15 and 27, have been found murdered in the last
month along with 25 others over the course of three years. Each were brunettes with long hair and wide bluish eyes. Each were found to have been raped then strangled with a handmade
necklace made of Nadeshiko flowers. Not only that,
but their lungs were completely filled with red rose petals.” Duo looked up
smuggle from his desk at the Japanese man. Heero blinked.
“So you did. Nadeshiko flowers,
eh? He might be a rapist, but he’s got some class.” Duo snorted.
“No rapist has class, Hee-chan.
They’re all scum. Though, this guy isn’t your normal thug. It looks like he was
keeping track of each of his victims. He chose them specifically for their
looks and didn’t use the typical ‘breaking and entering’ method most rapists
do…”
“… Which means he’s more dangerous,” Heero finished for
him.
“Exactly.” Suddenly, Une, the director and the two boys’ boss strode out of her
office.
“Maxwell, Yuy. You two are
working on that new flower rapist case, right?” They nodded, in perfect sync.
“Well, another victim’s been found, so get on it.” They
looked at each other.
“I’ll get you coat,” Heero said.
“And I’ll get the car started,” Duo finished.
As soon as Duo stepped out of the car, he did what he
always did when he entered a crime scene: surveyed his surroundings. The
victim’s home was in the suburbs, a nice residential area, actually. The
neighbors stood a distance away, held back by yellow tape and local police. The
yard was nicely kept, not a single daisy broken and the grass was not unkempt. Meaning that the perpetrator had come up the brick walkway to the
front door. The house was a pristine white, the glass windows, all
intact, were unsmudged and windexed.
The blue door was closed and, as Duo opened it, it showed no sign of wear and
the hinges were in perfect working order.
‘No signs of forced entry,’ he thought to himself, ‘though,
everything is a little bit too perfect…’
He walked into the house, immediately locating the police,
hovering over something, covered with a sheet, presumably the corpse.
“He knew her.” The three policemen’s heads shot up. The
tallest of the three chewed lazily on a toothpick.
“Oh? And how do you figure that?”
‘Great, an arrogant, self-absorbed prick, just what I don’t
need right now…’
“And how do you think he is a he and her
is a her, kid?” Duo almost growled at
him, but he had better manners than that.
“Considering the numerous amount of ballerina porcelain
knick-knacks, I figured the victim was female. She was raped, therefore the
perpetrator was male. He knew her because there is no forced entry. She
probably invited him in.” The policeman gave him a disgusted look.
“And just WHO are you?!” Duo grinned and flashed his badge.
“Detective Maxwell at your service.”
The head officer gritted his teeth.
“We didn’t call for no fucking
detective.” Duo completely ignored him and breezed past him, kneeled down and
lifted the sheet up. Once he got a look at the face, he immediately stood up.
Just then, Heero appeared at his shoulder.
“I checked out back, what you said in the car… you’re
intuition was right, as usual, he went in the front. He was probably her
boyfriend or something,” he caught a glimpse of his partner’s pale complexion.
“What’s the matter?”
“It’s Martha,” Duo murmured. Heero blinked.
“Martha? Who’s Martha?” Duo looked him in the eye.
“Martha Evans. Zechs’ new
secretary…”
“Shit,” Heero simply said.
“That’s why the house is in such perfect condition. She
just moved here…,” Heero stifled the urge to pat Duo on the head like he
usually did whenever his partner showed his genius side. PDA’s were reserved in
more familiar ground. In the area of book smarts, Duo had the intelligence of a
kindergartener. But when it came to street smarts, he was a genius; it came
from living on the streets for four years as a child. Duo sighed.
“Well, looks like we gotta pick Zechsie’s brain for some info.”
“Aa.”
Zechs stared at them in shock,
tears marring his pale face.
“A-are you sure that it was… M-martha?” Duo nodded and gave Zechs’
hand an encouraging squeeze.
“I’m sorry, Zechs.” Zechs shook his head.
“N-no, it’s okay. I only knew her for a few weeks, but she
was a good woman. Duo, I’ll do anything I can to help you catch this sick
fuck.” Duo smiled.
“All we need is for you to answer a few questions, then you can go back to working on the Stephens drug ring
case, k?” Zechs nodded.
“Do you know if Martha had a boyfriend?” Zechs shook his head.
“No, she was single.”
“Damn,” Duo muttered, “in that case, we have very little to
go by since her file says she has no brothers and no close male friends.”
“I’m sorry…,” Duo smiled sweetly at him.
“No, it’s okay,” he gave Zechs a hug, “if you need anything, you know where to reach
me.” Zechs smiled back, enthused by the contact with
the American.
“Yes, I do.” With a wave, Duo left Zechs’
office.
‘You have good instincts, Detective Maxwell,’ Zechs thought, ‘if anyone can figure out this case, it’s
you.’
Duo slumped in his chair.
“Man, this sucks…,” Heero slipped up behind him and massaged
his shoulders.
“Dead ends and zero leads?” Duo
groaned.
“This sucks.” Their door swung open and Director Une walked in, eying Duo.
“Well, any luck on the flower rapist case?”
“Nadeshiko,” Duo murmured. She
looked startled.
“Eh?”
“It’s tradition of us to name our own cases. Label this one
‘Nadeshiko’. In any case, no, and Heero and I are gonna head home early. Until this guy makes another move,
there’s nothing for us to do.” Une nodded.
“Alright, you two go home and rest. We have paperwork
tomorrow and you two will be working on budget along with Barton, Winner, and
Chang so you’ll all need your rest…” Both Heero and Duo groaned.
