The Foreign Exchange Student

The Foreign Exchange Student: Chapter 1

Today was a very special day in the life of Heero Yuy, he was going to America. He had just become part of the foreign exchange program that is sending him to a high school in Los Angeles, California. He had never been to America, but spoke English quite fluently, but with a still heavy Japanese accent. He smiled upon the fact that he would meet several new friends. It was his last year of school and he wanted to make the best of it.

"Heero, are you all packed?" His mother called at him. "We gotta leave to get to the airport in ten minutes. Go ahead and get your bags in the car!"

"Hai," he replied, shutting his laptop down. He grabbed his suitcases and took them to the car. Opening the trunk, he sighed, not knowing what awaited him in America. It would be very different there, his mother told him. People are very different there, is what he had learned, but it was also one of the greatest places in the world, from what he had learned anyway.

His mother did not have the means to take care of him anymore. She had to send him away, for his own good. She hopes for him to meet someone there and become an American citizen. Okinawa had nothing left for him. His mother knew her end was near, after losing her husband a few months before, and this was his wish, to have Heero go to America and have a better life.

Heero trudged back into the house, moping, taking some last looks over his surroundings, it would be the last time he saw any of it. He went back to his room, put his laptop in his special case.

He looked at the window and saw the cherry blossoms in the yard. It was spring. Everything was just starting to bloom and everything outside had wonderful aromas and everything had wonderful colors. It was like watching everything being born anew. It made him a little sad, knowing that he would leave his homeland and probably never return.

He couldn't take everything with him. He had packed his clothes and his video games. That was all he could take. He could send for the rest later, if he needed it, but he was sure that he would be fine without it. He opened his closet for the last time, climbed up on his stool, and removed a plank from the wall in the top of his closet, above the shelf. He took out all of his savings. He would need that. He could change it at customs once he arrived at the airport in America. He had well over ¥100,000. It would be very helpful on his trip.

Stowing the money away in his wallet, his eyes traced the room. He grabbed up his laptop bag and rushed out quickly. The quicker he left, the better. "Kaa-san, let's go," Heero called to her as he walked into the living room.

She got up from her chair and grabbed her car keys. "Do you have everything?"

"I got it all," he told her, looking at her face. He knew that this was hard for her, but he had to be strong, he was a man now, after all.

The drive there was really quiet. Heero studied the landscape of his country, tears swelling in his eyes, knowing that he would have to get used to a whole new country pretty soon.

"Heero," his mother said, "Your car is out of the shop, I went ahead and had it shipped to you new home in America. I had it sent two days ago."

"I thought it was still in the shop. I guess those parts came in faster than I thought. I wonder what it runs like now," Heero said, sighing, waiting to jump behind the wheel of his GT-R once again.

"I wanted you to have something to drive when you got there. You know they drive on the other side of the road, right? They are so backward over there."

Heero laughed with his mother, he was going to miss her alot. He didn't want to let her see his sadness, so he kept it inside. "Arigato, domo arigato gozaimasu." He looked over at her and smiled. "Daisuki desu, Kaa-san."

Tears swelled in his mothers eyes. She was going to miss him, more than ever. She would be truly alone. Her husband was gone and now her son would be too. She tried not to think about it.

They arrived at the airport, she let Heero out of the car, and she got out to help him unload his bags from the trunk. They hugged and she kissed him on the cheek. "Do well in America, Heero, make your father proud," she said as she started crying. He tightened his hug. "You gotta go, Heero, you will miss your flight if you don't."

He grabbed his bags and walked away from her, walking into the airport. He didn't turn and look back, he knew if he did, he might not be able to leave.
