Prologue:
Two set of eyes watched as the other pilots left, heading into the temporary safe house. Then, as if on cue, they turned into the woods, walked out of sight of the house, and faced each other.
"What the heck are you?" Calm, cool, collected- the voice matched the wary eyes.
"I could ask you the same fucking thing..." These words burned with fire, and the eyes snapped back in quick judgement. "You smell like something that hasn't existed in centuries."
"You smell of blood. Fresh blood. You always do, you know. Even when you haven't been on a mission in days. The others are oblivious to it but I am familiar with it in ways even assassins can't comprehend."

"Swear not to turn me over to those who hunt my kind, and I will tell you what I am."
"Sounds like we may have the same stipulation." A hand extended, delicate black claws forming on the fingertips. "Swear it to me in return, and I will let you know if the things you think of are still living."
Deep hesitation, then glowing flames locked with slit- pupiled orbs. Smiles stretched across both faces, and both revealed the elongated canines of a predator. "I swear it on blood. No hunters."
"I swear, no hunters. On my pride and honour, and on blood."
Hands clasped, and on the forest floor, two drops of blood fell, and together burned through the leaf mould to the dirt beyond.
