Disclaimer: I don’t own DB/Z/GT or any of the characters found in this fic. They are the property of TOEI ANIMATION in Japan and FUNimation in the U.S.A. I’m making no profit from this.
I also do not own the song or lyrics One Night in Bangkok by Murry Head.
I had no idea that the song was actually part of a larger stage show named ‘Chess’ written by Benny Andersson, Bjor Ulvaeus and Tim Rice. Which I own no rights to either.
I am not making any money from this work of fanfiction.
A/N- This is actually a G/V get together fic. However, some of the other pairings may surprise you. :) I think there’s only one cannon couple in here. Obviously VERY A/U.
I hope this is a fun read for anyone who may be interested in such a combination.
Beta’d by Hoshi. Thank you Hoshi! (And thanks to rdk for catching a few others).
(DBZ/chess (the game, not the play.))
Rating – PG13 – or at least that’s what I was hoping for.
Warnings – OOC, A/U, mentions and kisses of M/M, mentions and kisses of M/F, chess, foul language, some minor roles of OC’s.
Prologue
“I grow impatient with your stalling, old man,” Freeza sat in his hover chair, his body language spoke of both impatience and boredom. Chin resting on the back of one raised hand while the fingertips of the other drummed against the traveling device’s frame. Every once in a while the tyrant would allow himself to look over the six orange balls in front of him. They were gaudy in their own way – it was difficult not to think of them as some sort of outlandish jewels. Did they really hold the power rumor said they did?
“The last one is on the way,” Guru spoke in his slow manner. Very little could get him excited these days – let alone a bully that was more of a spoiled brat than an actual threat.
Zarbon interceded with one glance from the corner of his liege’s eye, “You’ve said that before…” he stopped as he noted there was indeed a small dot on the horizon and pointed in its direction.
Freeza straightened in his chair as he glanced in the direction his minion was pointing. A slow smile grew on his purple lips – one corner of his mouth lifting more than the other. It made a few of the Nameks around uncomfortable; as though the look didn’t seem to come easily to the alien’s face.
Nail slowed and landed with caution, not wanting to provoke their ‘guests’ with any of his actions. He took in his surroundings covertly as he walked with the seventh dragon ball towards the other six lying in front of the white and pink alien’s travel device. He set it down gently with the group and stepped back, always keeping an eye open in case there was an opportunity to rescue the few Nameks that were being held hostage.
Freeza watched the globes expectantly for a few moments before he grew impatient once again – stepping out of his hover chair in order to look them over. Finally, “How does it work, Elder,” his high pitched voice slurred the title he had heard so many of the inhabitants of this planet give to the fat old slough sitting on his white stone throne.
“First you must summon the dragon,” Guru instructed.
Freeza gave him one brief stare before he turned his attention back to the dragonballs, “Such as – Rise dragon?” he asked even as he directed the last part of the comment towards the magical spheres.
Guru masked his chuckle with a cough, “Ah – no, it must be spoken in our native tongue…” the set of the short being’s shoulders hunched just so and its tail lashed once, “Ah, I see, would you prefer that I summon the dragon for you?”
Now Freeza looked up warily. If the myth were true, he would be able to have anything he wanted – but what he wanted to know at this moment was why these beings were acting so accommodating in letting him have his wish. Finally deciding that if there were indeed treachery afoot he would be able to deal with it, Freeza crossed his arms over his chest and said, “Yes.”
Guru nodded and bowed his head, taking a moment to clear his thoughts before he spoke, “Rise Porunga,” he said it in a voice that was the same volume as their conversation had been, but even Freeza had to respect the unexpected authority he felt behind the words.
Freeza’s soldiers gasped en masse as the orange balls began to glow. Although few of them would admit it out loud – no one wanted to be branded a traitor by those few who were really dedicated to Freeza – but most of them feared the outcome if Freeza truly gained the power he had come here in search of. They started murmuring among themselves when the sky began to grow dark – a lot of them coming from worlds that had superstitions featuring such events – any one watching them closely instead of the spectacular bit of magic happening in front of their faces would have seen stealthy warding gestures.
Even Freeza stepped back as the glow around the balls came together with a blast of energy causing flying debris before shooting up into the sky – the stream of light winding in a dizzying spiraling way he had never seen energy behave before. Then the glow began to fade, become more solid and just as it gained corporeal form of a giant green reptilian a deep voice spoke, “Those who have woken me from my slumber, please state your first wish.”
Freeza smiled upon hearing those words, “Can it understand what I am saying?” he asked the Elder. When Guru shook his head, Freeza continued, “Then tell it I wish for immortality,” he stated.
Guru wasn’t as sure about the wish; “If I may suggest…” there were problems with wishing for immortality without understanding the consequences – such as being able to live forever even if torn apart.
Freeza turned on the eldest Namek, “Tell it I wish for immortality, now!”
Guru cleared his throat, “The foreigner wishes for immortality.”
Porunga’s huge, red eyes brightened briefly before the dragon spoke again, “Your first wish has been granted.”
Freeza was very keen on the wording the dragon used, “First wish? How many more are there?” he asked with excitement.
“You have two more wishes remaining,” Guru informed him with a bit of a defeated tone in his voice, “Please tell me your second wish.”
“I wish to be the most powerful being in the universe,” Freeza said with glee.
Guru shook his head even as he translated the second wish – knowing the dragon’s idea of power and the tyrant’s idea of power may very well be two different things. Once again the dragon’s eyes glowed as he forced his will upon the universe, “The second wish has been granted. Please tell me your third wish so I may return to my slumber.”
Freeza frowned, not feeling as though he had become any more powerful, but then thought maybe he wouldn’t be able to tell until he had a chance to transform – someplace with a little more privacy perhaps. “Tell him I wish to rule the entire universe,” Freeza said with an evil chuckle. This was too good to be true!
When Guru hesitated once again Freeza pointed a glowing, ki tipped finger at one of the children, “Tell him my third wish now!”
Guru shook his head as he sighed before translating the third and final wish to Porunga. The Elder had enough trouble managing one planet of peaceful people – he really didn’t think this young alien had any idea what he was setting himself up for.
Freeza watched the dragon expectantly and frowned when its red eyes did not glow, “Why is it hesitating?” he asked Guru.
Guru didn’t know either, “Why do you hesitate?,” he asked the dragon.
The reptilian face of the dragon seemed unchanged, but even Freeza could sense it frowned before it spoke something to Guru he couldn’t understand, “What did it say? Can it not grant this wish?”
Guru shook his head, “Porunga asked if you wouldn’t be content with one galaxy instead,” he relayed, even though he knew it was highly unlikely.
Freeza folded his arms over his chest, “Tell it I meant the entire universe. ”
Guru relayed Freeza’s certainty about his last wish. The dragon’s eyes glowed and then continued to glow. Freeza wondered if maybe the dragon wasn’t powerful enough to grant his wish. It would figure, but at least he was able to get two wishes granted…then his tail started to hurt – and his arms pulled out to his sides as though by a great unseen force – and then his legs were stretched out and he was tipped parallel to the ground, “What the hell did you tell him!?” Freeza’s high pitched voice screeched through the pain as he felt as though his body were being torn apart.
Freeza’s men gathered their weapons aiming them at the Nameks. Zarbon cringed as his liege screamed and then the scream was suddenly cut short as Freeza’s body came apart and then the pieces of it glowed and then changed shapes, becoming more condensed and then spherical. It all happened too quickly for him to do anything but stare in horror – not that Freeza was being torn apart, but just the shock of it being able to happen at all. “What’s happened?” he asked quietly, his weapon coming down in his bewilderment as the glow faded from around the once body parts to reveal…reveal…well, it looked like another set of dragon balls. Only these were an opalescent white with purple and pink stars on them.
It was only a quick glimpse he was able to see – not even enough time to count how many there were. They glowed briefly before heading straight up into the sky and then shooting away from each other with long glowing trails that rapidly faded in their wake.
“The third wish has been granted,” Porunga spoke, “I bid thee farewell,” and then he began to glow and shrink before the energy that had been released was once again contained in the seven Namek dragonballs. They shot up and disappeared into the sky in a very similar manner as what had just happened….
…But, what had just happened? Zarbon turned to the Elder Namek to question him, “What just happened?” he asked aloud.
Guru cleared his throat, “I do believe that the dragon’s interpretation of your Lord’s consecutive wishes was, possibly not the same as what your Liege had in mind.”
That didn’t tell Zarbon a damn thing! “What does that mean?” he ground out. He couldn’t be certain…but he wanted to be certain…
Guru shifted his considerable bulk in his chair to sit up straighter, “I do believe the dragon turned Freeza into dragon balls and scattered them throughout the universe. ”
There was much murmuring among Freeza’s men at the news. The Warrior Nameks all tensed, readying for a fight…when the murmuring started to become cheers as weapons were dropped and stunned reaction became elation.
“You mean – if someone wants to find Freeza – they have to look throughout the entire universe?” Zarbon asked, “And…and Freeza will have to grant wishes like your dragon?” it was almost too good to be true – he felt giddy – he felt relieved – he felt free.
Seeing the reaction of so many others of Freeza’s army, Guru did not hesitate further in confirming, “Yes. I do believe that is the case.”
Zarbon grinned and turned to Dadoria, “Do you plan on looking for him?” he asked with some caution.
The pink alien shook his head, looking a little lost. “Are you nuts?”
Zarbon grinned, “Well, looks like we have a reprieve. How do we want to handle this?” he asked the crowd in general as he started to walk away, “We can communicate this…”
There were several ‘boo’s and ‘Hell nos!’ “Then we’ll leave and scatter as best we can. Maybe…” but Zarbon didn’t want to speak his hopes out loud, in case there were still some in this group that were brain-washed with their loyalty to the ice-jin empire.
A smile grew on Guru’s face as the aliens walked away. No confrontation necessary, “I don’t get it,” one of his warrior class stated, “Why aren’t they…”
One of his class kicked him in the shin to get him to shut up, “I’ll take it as it is,” he stated. His fellow nodded after frowning from the mild blow.
“Well, my children, I think it is safe to say we can return to our normal daily routines. Perhaps though,” he spoke slower, thinking, “Perhaps we should hold a celebration of sorts once the foreigners are off planet.”
There was quiet agreement from all his descendants.
