Bei Tagasanbruch erblickten wir den Feind

A/N: Well, this was something i threw together just because I was bored and it became something else entirely.

Pairing: Nazi!Hughes x Jew!Roy

Warnings: Violence, historical, some fluff, implied character death, implied suicide, explicit yaoi.

At the bottom of the submission are some explanations and translations for the German bits. Don't read them all at once or you'll ruin the end for yourself!

Disclaimer: I do not own Fullmetal Alchemist or any of its characters, they belong to Hiromu Arakawa.

"AUF! AUF! AUF, IHR FAULEN JUDENHUNDE!" Came the sharp, barking command, echoing through the camp like the bite of an icicle, stabbing freezing terror into all who heard it. Roy Mustang heard it was on his feet instantly, scrambling to get outside with the rest of the Jews for Zählappell. To miss Zählappell was to ask for a slow, painful death. Not that it was any better to do as you were told, standing in shoddy shoes, or in most cases, bare feet in the frozen mud outside the filthy, rotting shacks the Jews came to call home in the horror known as Auschwitz.

He didn't know how long he had come to be at Auschwitz Monowitz. There was no sense of time in the death camps. Each day was a blessing and a curse to wake up to, the next one always worse than the one before it. On and on they dragged, endless, sixteen hour days. Wake up with the sun, stand in Zählappell, (which could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on whether the Nazis knew that there was someone on the edge of death in the crowd), work yourself to the bone making fuses or digging graves or breaking rocks, eat a pathetic lunch of watery broth and maggoty bread, return to work until well into the dark and collapse into a bed made of wormy straw that you shared with four or five other people in no better shape than you. If they'd all been healthy and whole, this would have been cramped and miserable. But after starvation rations and cruel work hours, clad only in ratty clothing you clung to your bunkmates for all the warmth you could, trembling sacks of bone, constantly wondering if in the morning you'd wake holding a corpse.

"Aufstellung!" The crisp, neat looking Nazi officer snarled, hitting one Jew with his clipboard as he ran by to get to his place in line, making him fall to the ground. As one, the rest of the crowd closed their eyes as a gunshot rang out. Of all the things you did during Zählappell, falling down was not one of them. Eyes opened when it was over and two Jews were ordered to drag the body to the incinerator.

The officers walked up and down the rows of sick, starving men and children, seeking out the weak and frail like a butcher looking for the cows he knows aren't strong enough to bother feeding anymore.

A few more gunshots here and there and then a collective inward sigh when Zählappell was called to an end and everyone was ordered to work. Roy walked as quickly as he could to the warehouse where he sat with the rest of the men and children with nimble fingers, picking apart rope to make fuses for bombs.

He slowly sat down on his seat at the table he was assigned to, managing a faint smile towards the young boy of about ten years of age he sat beside every day. He didn't even know the child's name; talking between the prisoners was strictly regulated. By keeping the Jews worked to the bone, starved and silent, the Nazis could keep the population of over 30,000 Jews, Poles, gypsies, homosexuals and political prisoners with just a few hundred guards.

Arbeit macht frei. Roy thought bitterly to himself, staring at his bleeding, ruined fingertips as he slowly picked the rough bits of rope into thin threads that would be used as fuses for bombs. He'd survived over a month in the hell known as Monowitz, which was longer than most. Many would come to Monowitz only to be marched right back onto another train to be transported to Birkenau. So far he had escaped such misfortune.

So far.

"FAULER JUDE, get back to work!" Came the snarling order and he cried out when something hard connected with the base of his skull, momentarily stunning him. He fell backwards on the ground, staring up at cold green eyes and wire rimmed glasses staring down at him. "EKELHAFTER, FAULER JUDE!"

Again and again the stick hit him, making him curl into a ball, silently accepting the punishment. One scream and he'd be dead.

"Standartenführer! You'll kill him! Then he's useless to us! He is the best fuse maker we've got!" Came the snarling bark of another officer, shoving Hughes' shoulder hard. "Take him to the medical tent to make sure he has no serious broken bones and then drag his sorry carcass back here to work!"

Hughes snarled at that and gripped Roy hard, yanking him up and dragging him out of the warehouse, towards the medical tent. Before they got there, however, he veered off towards one of the furthest back warehouses used to store excess materials that the Germans found of no use to them. Mostly personal possessions of the prisoners that had no value, like photographs and children's toys.

He shoved Roy inside, looked around to make sure they weren't followed, and then stepped inside, slamming the door shut. Jew and Nazi stared at each other for a long moment before the man was on him, lips crushed together and clutching tight to one another as if they had been apart for years.

"I'm sorry I had to hurt you.. I just.. I needed to see you, it's been over a week and I.. I was worried.." Maes trailed off, his uniform hat and wooden baton tossed aside, an arm tightly curled around Roy's waist, stroking the bruise he'd made on the man's cheek.

A soft chuckle came from Roy and he smiled with more affection than he knew he had left in him. "Darum liebe ich dich... You always apologize for what cannot be helped.." he sighed, kissing him again.

Maes lifted Roy easily, for the man weighed no more than a full grown twelve year old boy these days, and carried him towards the back of the warehouse, where they wouldn't be found even if someone entered the warehouse.

He gently rested him against an enormous pile of stuffed child's toys, their own personal bed as it'd come to be when they managed to sneak time together. Roy pulled Maes down on top of him and they kissed languorously, touching and exploring each other, Roy to feel the strength and power in his lover he no longer had and Maes to ensure that each and every part of his Jew was intact.

"You're all skin and bones.. I fear one day i'll see you in the wheelbarrow going by towards the Krematorium..." The Nazi whispered softly, sticking his glasses in the pocket on his jacket, one hand quickly working on the button of Roy's tattered pants, the other tugging at his thick leather belt. He wished for one day to have the time to properly explore and love the smaller man beneath him once more, but for now, they couldn't take their time.

"Ich kann nichts versprechen..." Roy murmured, lifting his hips to help Maes tug his pants to his knees, wrapping his thin legs around the man's hips, arms circling around his shoulders to pull him closer, heart beating rapidly in his thin, bony chest. "I can promise that I will always love you.. Even in death, my mind, body and soul belongs to you, my Standartenführer.."

Maes kissed him again, giving the Jew his tongue as he pressed close to him, enveloping every shivering, suffering inch of his lover as if to shield him from his pain and misery, if even for a brief moment. "I will follow you into death as soon as I can, my love.. And I will take as many Nazi murderers with me as I can.. That is all I can promise, for I won't even pretend a spot awaits me in Heaven at your side." He was a killer, as much as any Nazi, however unwillingly. He doubted Roy's G-d would make such a distinction.

Roy shook his head and kissed his forehead, rocking his body slightly to let the elder know he was ready, stroking a stubbly cheek. "My only wish for you is to live..."

Maes smiled, an expression so full of sorrow and pain it nearly broke Roy's heart. "Without you, Roy, I have nothing left to live for.. Du bist mein Leben.."

And they were kissing again with all the passion pent up over endless days of not knowing, of fearing the worst for each other, for wondering if each morning would be the last. A strangled cry burst from Roy as Maes began to press inside of him with the aid of the gun lube the elder kept on his person, earning a soft kiss from him. There was no time for the Nazi to prep him, but he'd become better at taking him this way. A few moments pause to let him adjust and then Hughes was moving in his frail body, gentle and tender with each thrust, knowing Roy no longer had the strength for the rough, passionate sex they enjoyed before the war.

"M-Maes.." Roy moaned softly into the shoulder of his uniform, trembling, bloody fingers clutching at the coarse, black cloth. Tongues tangled once more in the most primitive of dances and he was whimpering with pleasure now, forced to swallow the loud cries that wanted to burst from him. They couldn't afford to be caught or they'd both be tortured and then murdered for their crimes.
"Mein Standartenführer.. Mein Geliebter..." he whispered, voice cracking with emotion as each thrust into him sent pleasure coursing through his body. He missed this, the feeling of being so full and complete.. the feel of being safe and protected in the arms of the man he loved more than life itself.

"Maes..! M-MAES!" he cried, thin body shuddering and arching as he hit a hard climax, spattering his stomach with seed. Another cry, muffled by the fabric of his love's uniform, erupted from him when he felt Hughes follow suit, filling him with his essence and claiming him as his own.

They lay there for as long as they dare, tangled in each other's arms until finally they separated, Roy's eyes filled with a painful longing so intense he felt himself nearly break down. But he couldn't. He had to be strong.

He let Maes clean him up and redress them both, clinging to him to drink in the scent of his love. It would likely have to last him another week or more. They couldn't do this too often or someone would get suspicious..

He swallowed and stood on violently shaking legs, supported by Maes as they headed towards the door. "It'll be alright, love.. I'll make sure you make it back to the work house.."

Roy knew that Hughes felt guilty, losing precious calories and water as they made love, but Roy knew he needed these moments together as much as, if not more than, he needed food or water. And he definitely knew which one he craved the most.

They exited the warehouse and Roy felt his heart nearly stop when the other Nazi officer from the work house spotted them and approached, radiating suspicion and fury. "Comrade! What are you doing over there with that filthy Jew!?" he snarled, reaching for his weapon.

Without pausing to think Roy yanked the gun from Maes' holster and pointed it at his lover's head, purposefully only half behind him.

"Roy, what are you doing!? They'll kill you!" Maes hissed under his breath, crying out when Roy yanked on his hair.

"Drop the gun or i'll kill him!" he screamed at the other officer, pretending not to have heard Maes.

"Roy! Please..!"

"Drop the weapon, Jewish scum!" the other ordered in a barking yell, attracting others who also aimed their weapons at Roy.

"Roy..!"

He closed his eyes and sighed softly, feeling at peace with himself for the first time in years. "Ich werde dich immer lieben..." he whispered, his lips caressing Maes' ear as he spoke before he pressed the gun to his own head.

"Ich werde dich in der Hölle sehen."

Ich werde dich in der Hölle sehen. - I'll see you in hell. (Roy is saying this because suicide is a sin in every religion. In taking his own life he hopes that he will one day see his lover in Hell, since they cannot meet in Heaven because of Hughes' sins.)
