He was comfortable. That was not something that came with growing up on the streets. What was going on? Not that he was complaining, considering he was cradled in something warm. Much warmer than the newspaper and cardboard usually kept him. It was also quiet. Very quiet. No wind, no traffic, no…anything. Forcing himself to ignore how much his body shouted at him to stay where it was, the braided boy pushed himself to sit up.
“What…the…fuck?” Violet eyes swept the nearly empty room.
He could admit that this wasn’t the first time he had woke without knowing where he was. Though…whoever owned this house, or whatever it was, had one hell of an empty house. He had never been raped. He was smart enough to get himself out of situations like this, but he had known quite a few people who hadn’t been.
The room he was in was empty. Except for the bed he was in that had pillows and blankets pooled to surround him. No windows, so, no way to figure out where he was. There were, however, three doors. Alright…this was the bedroom. One had to lead to a closet…maybe another to a bathroom. So the third had to go to the rest of this place. Well, damn. He usually just snuck out a window if he woke up in a strangers house, but since that wasn’t an option this time, he would have to take his chances.
He had been right about the first two doors. Now he only had to worry about what was on the other side of the last door. He opened it cautiously, holding his breath to keep from making any kind of sound. What he saw was…not what he had been expecting. The room could only be described as a…a throne room. Where the hell was he? For that matter, how long had he been out in order to travel here?
He hadn’t even made it to the stairs that were just in front of the throne when the huge double doors facing the throne opened. Violet eyes looked passed the man with funny eyebrows and the woman with a severe bun to the man behind them.
He didn’t exactly know the platinum haired man, but he had seen him once. Though…that one time the man had been wearing a very expensive suit. Normally the braided boy wouldn’t have bothered to remember someone like him, but the man had mad an impression on him. People that saw him knew instantly that he was homeless and they would go as far as crossing the street to avoid him.
This man however had been walking on the other side of the street and had crossed toward him. He had walked straight up to the boy and asked him if he needed anything. Of course the braided boy had just shaken his head, he had never asked for charity before and he wasn’t going to start just because someone was offering. The man had smiled at him, fished into his pocket and pulled out a business card. It wasn’t until that evening that the boy was looking at the card that he realized the man had reverse pick pocketed him. Five hundred dollars. That had bought him a meal and a new pair of shoes before he had curled up in some random alley and fallen asleep for the night. He still had over four hundred dollars left and that sure as fuck wasn’t enough to literally buy his ass.
“What’s your name?” The boy wasn’t going to answer the man with funny eyebrows but he needed to find a way out. If he could keep them talking, he might be able to come up with a plan.
“Duo.” The woman gave him a tight smile.
“I’m Lady Une, this is Treize and Milliardo. I’m sure you’re wondering exactly what is happening. I have to get back to the training room, Treize will fill you in on where you are and what needs to be done.” Duo felt his eyes widen. ‘What needs to be done?’ That woman was fucking nuts if she thought that he wasn’t going to put up a fight.
“Nice to meet you Duo.” Treize said after Une had headed down the hall. “I suppose the first thing you nee to know is that your body is dead.” What the fuck were these people on? He was standing in front of them and they were telling him he wasn’t alive.
“What?”
“Treize…may I try to explain?” The man that he had seen before asked.
“If you think it will help.”
“Duo, if you would be so kind as to take a seat and then just listen to what we have to say, I promise we will answer all of your question.” When the braided boy plopped down on the top step, Milliardo smiled and just shook his head. “On the throne if you don’t mind.” Violet eyes widened in surprise then narrowed in suspicion, but he still stood and crossed to the throne.
Circling it twice, he touched the black seat hesitantly. It didn’t look like there was anything that would reach out and force him to stay in the chair, but he still checked for it before he felt it was safe to sit down. When he had finally sat down Duo looked to the two men who were sharing an amused look. He had to say that if they were planning on doing anything sexual to him, they had one hell of a fetish to place him in a more superior position than themselves.
“You look good there.” Duo felt himself let out a sudden laugh.
“I look like shit, but thanks I think…so…I’m dead?” Treize nodded while Milliardo shook his head. “You two should have agreed on a story before you brought me here.” The platinum haired man was the one that answered him.
“Everyone has two bodies. Please, just listen.” The blonde man requested softly. He had to get this all out or the boy would be more confused than necessary. “This is Limbo. It is a plain of existence that exists between life and death. Everyone that you’ll see here is an Angel. When we are on earth, we are just like everyone else, body, mind and spirit. When the spirit is removed from a normal human, it enters Limbo and is judged to see where it belongs. Now the difference with us comes when our soul is pulled from our bodies, we acquire another one when we pass through the gateway into Limbo. That is why you have a body right now. Are you with me so far?” Duo hadn’t even noticed his mouth falling open. What the fuck were these people on?
“I guess.” He wasn’t even aware of speaking. There was no way in hell that this was real…but a part of him still hoped it was. Maybe he really had died. He could consider this a kind of heaven. He would always have a roof over his head, a warm bed to sleep in and if he was lucky, food.
Food. He couldn’t remember the last time he didn’t have to worry about where he was going to find something to eat…if he could find something to eat. Thou, he wasn’t even hungry. He wasn’t full either, he just…didn’t need to eat.
“Treize needs to get back to the sorting room. If you would like to take a shower, I can get you some clean clothes and we can talk some more.” Duo found himself nodding before he completely thought the offer through. He would give nearly anything to have a shower and clean clothes.
1 * 2
Duo had taken a long shower. A very long shower. Not only had it been ridiculously long, he had enjoyed every second of it. He had scrubbed his hair and body no less than four times before he finally felt like there was no possible way to get any cleaner. The boy and wrapped a towel around his waist and another around his hair before he opened the bathroom door cautiously. Well, the blonde man was no where in sight, so Duo swung the door open the rest of the way. The man had done what he had promised and had clothes set out on the newly made bed for him.
The clothes that the platinum haired man had chosen for him were…nice. A simple t-shirt and slacks with his newly purchased shoes, but after living in filth for so long, he felt like he was getting to wear the finest robes. He couldn’t find a pair of underwear, but he wouldn’t have worn them even if he had. Even living on the streets, there was no way in hell he would ever consider slipping into someone else’s underwear, and he wasn’t about to put his old pair back on. That was a line that just wasn’t ever going to be crossed. It wasn’t until he had finished getting dressed that he noticed a hairbrush sitting on top of one of his pillows.
His pillow? Shit. He had to get out of here. But…he had everything. Sitting down to start the task of brushing out his hair, Duo found himself lost in the task after only a few brushstrokes. When he had been younger, brushing out his hair had always soothed him. Though that may have been because his only friend on the streets had spent hours brushing his hair for him. He missed Solo. He had always looked out for him. He had died when Duo was only seven. He had been on his own ever since. He didn’t get a chance to dwell on the sad thoughts because there was a sudden knock at his door.
“Yeah?” The door swung open and the blonde man stood smiling at him.
“Well, don’t you clean up nice? Treize said he was going to talk to Une and get her to end training early so you could meet some of the other Angels. When you’re ready, you can take your place on the throne and I’ll let them know you’ll see them.” Duo was speaking before he could stop himself.
“What do you want with me? Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that you’re being nice to me, but why are you doing it?” The man with ice blue eyes leaned against the door jam with a smile before he answered.
“I suppose I should let you in on exactly why we’ve been treating you the way we have. Besides, when you meet the Angels, you might wonder what they’re calling you.” Oh, that didn’t sound good.
“What do you mean ‘what they’ll be calling me?’ Won’t they be calling me Duo? That’s what you’ve been calling me.” The brunette wondered out loud as he braided his hair and secured it with his old hair tie.
“If you could see aura’s like the rest of us, you would understand why we are giving you the royal treatment, My Lord.”
“Lord…what?” Now things were starting to get way out of hand.
“When Angels come to Limbo, we have the same aura around us as when we were on earth. You on the other hand came through the gateway with wings.” Duo couldn’t do anything but sit there awestruck. “It’s nice to finally meet you Shinigami.”
1 * 2
Duo had been sitting on the throne now for nearly two hours. He really hadn’t said anything to anyone he had been introduced to. Milliardo had explained…rather well, that Shinigami was the God of Death. He was the God of Death…or at least, he would be after he could find his other Angels.
Tenshi’s, Milliardo had explained, came in sets of five. Shinigami’s set was made up of a violet, dark and light blue, emerald green and ruby red. However, none of them could be claimed without Shinigami being present. With any luck, Duo would already have a few of his Tenshis in Limbo. He had been led to the throne and then forced to endure meeting hundreds of Angels that all seemed ecstatic to be allowed to kiss his hand before they left the room. Milliardo had explained after the first one had left that he would need to make contact with them in order to find his Angels and having the Tenshi’s kiss his hand was the most appropriate way to do it.
Until he could get out of this place, he would just have to go with it. These people were insane, but what could he do? He would just have to wait it out for now. Sighing when another Angel left, Duo slouched into the chair. The universe really was a bitch. It gave him everything he wanted, but at the price of being infinitely annoyed.
“This will be the last one for today, My Lord.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“But-”
“You didn’t have any problem calling me Duo earlier. If you feel like you really need to call me by something else, I suppose Shinigami will work, considering I’ve already heard it over a hundred times already.” The blonde man smiled before nodding.
“Shinigami it is.” Milliardo conceded, heading to the double doors and allowing the last man in.
Duo could actually see how irritated the last boy that came in was. The braided boy admitted that he probably would have been just as upset if he had waited for over two hours to meet someone that would soon be in charge of him. Though…he wouldn’t mind if this was the person that was in command of him. He was gorgeous. All muscles and wild hair and smoldering blue eyes.
“Shinigami.” And a very, very nice voice. “It is an honor to meet you.” Duo knew a bold faced lie when he heard one. This Angel was in no way happy to meet him.
“What’s your name?” The boy paused in reaching out to grab his hand.
“Heero Yuy, Shinigami.” The moment that the boy touched his hand, several things happened at once. The boy had jumped back as if he had been burned, though Duo hoped that the boy had only been shocked by the warm feeling that had just washed over him. Shinigami hadn’t even noticed that the blonde in the room had gasped in surprise.
“Heero, you’re one of his-”
“I’m not anyone’s anything.” The boy stated furiously before he turned and calmly walked from the room.
“Shinigami, he’s your’s. Are you just going to let him leave like that?” Duo shivered slightly, shaking his head.
“People are not possessions. No one should belong to anyone else.” Milliardo watched as the braided boy fled to his room. Oh well, it didn’t really matter. Dark blue wings had erupted from the Asian boy’s back the moment he had touched their Lord. It was only a matter of time before their need to continue touching consumed them. For now, Milliardo and the other Angels would just have to stand back and wait.
Though, Duo had his own plans. He had waited until he heard the double doors close behind the blonde before he felt safe enough to start forming a plan. He wasn’t sure how long he waited since there were no clocks here that he had seen, but he knew it had been at least an hour. The blonde had assured him that he wasn’t a prisoner, but that didn’t mean he had to believe him. Though, the hallway outside of the throne room was empty.
Quietly sneaking down the hall, the braided boy passed many closed doors and hallway split offs…but not one single person. He had to find a way out of this place, but, he wasn’t desperate enough to start opening random doors. This entire experience was playing out like a bad horror movie. Duo smiled to himself. He couldn’t believe he still remembered watching a bad horror movies.
He was about ready to give up. The hall just seemed to go on forever with nothing but shut doors. He had made up his mind to turn around when the hallway finally opened up into a larger room. This room was just as sparse as the rest of this place. Only one item was resting in the middle of the floor and the only way he could describe it was a giant mirror.
This…mirror was a circle with a silver ornate frame that was standing in the center of the room. Duo didn’t think he had ever seen anything so beautiful in his life. It was almost like a magnet, drawing him toward it. But he didn’t recognize the person that was mirroring his movements. He didn’t think he had ever seen himself look so…healthy. It was like the past thirteen years of abuse to his body had never happened.
“What are you doing?” Duo turned toward the voice and caught a glimpse of smoldering blue eyes widening before he was standing in the middle of an alleyway.
“What the fuck?”
1 * 2
“What do you mean he went through the gateway?” Treize asked calmly.
“He went through the gateway. I can’t make it any more clear than that. He’s on earth somewhere and you know he has to be tired. You realize that Shinigami can not rule Limbo from earth.” Treize hid his smile from the panicked sounding Asian. No matter how much Heero said he didn’t want to belong to someone, he couldn’t hide how worried he was about Shinigami.
“What do you propose we do?”
“Let me go try to find him before he falls asleep and becomes an Earth Bound.” Heero was nearly pleading with the man. They couldn’t just sit here and do nothing while Shinigami could still have a chance of coming back.
“I consider you to be like my son, Heero. So let me explain this to you only once. I don’t know if you’ve realized this yet, but you have wings. You’re one of Duo’s Angels. I know you don’t want to think of belonging to anyone, but this does make you a higher rank than anyone else in Limbo right now. You no longer have to ask permission to cross through the gateway. No one but Shinigami can order you not to.” Heero stood silently, processing the information he had been given. Treize really had been somewhat like a father figure since he had come to Limbo, making sure that Heero stayed in line until he had found another one of his Angels. Now that he had…Heero was being treated like an adult. No one except Duo could give him orders.
“I’ll try to find him. Is there anything I should know about him?”
“He’s homeless.” The Asian nodded before he turned and left.
Homeless. That really was quite helpful, he decided as he stepped through the portal. When you went through the gateway, you always went to where you were the most comfortable. Actually, you thought of a person and ended up near them where you felt the most comfortable. It was complex unless you knew what you were doing. Duo didn’t so he would go to someplace he knew. That limited Heero’s search to streets, back alleys, parks and homeless shelters.
Heero hadn’t realized how much time he had spent looking until he noticed the sky starting to darken. He didn’t want to admit that he might have lost the God of Death. The Asian didn’t even like the annoying…rather good looking boy, but he would be castrated by the other Angels. That was the only reason he was looking so desperately. It was hard enough to get special treatment from Treize…if he lost their Shinigami, there was no way that he would survive in Limbo. He had just about given up hope when he heard a little girl that came around the corner start complaining.
“Daddy, what about Peter?”
“I’ll buy you a new stuffed fox, honey. We have to go.” Heero smirked as he watched the little girl struggle in her father’s arms. It was nice to watch a family interact since he hadn’t had one.
“I don’t want a new one daddy, I want Peter!” The man sighed, knowing that his daughter wouldn’t be satisfied without her plushy.
“Where do you think you dropped him?” The little girl didn’t get a chance to answer before a braided boy came around the same corner, holding up a small red fox no bigger than his hand.
“You dropped this.” Heero just stared as the boy returned it to the little girl, causing her to squeal in delight.
“Daddy…look at his wings! Do I get wings like that? Why don’t you have wings daddy? They’re pretty.“ The man holding the child smiled at his little girl‘s imagination, thanked him and went on his way without even looking at the boy, if he had, he would have seen that it wasn‘t just the little girl‘s imagination. The Asian was crossing the street, ready to let Shinigami have a piece of his mind when the boy suddenly collapsed on the sidewalk. Heero was across the street, helping him to stand in seconds.
“Are you alright?” He didn’t know why, but he needed the answer.
“Yeah…just tired. What happened?”
“Think you can walk a block or two?”
“Sure…I can’t guarantee it though.” Heero smiled as he pulled the boy upright and started walking.
“Just don’t fall asleep on me.” Duo nodded, walking for nearly three minutes beside the Asian before his body gave out on him and everything went dark.
1 * 2
Duo was…comfortable. He had been awake for quite a while now, but he hadn’t gathered the strength to move yet. He had however, com to a decision. As long as he was safe here, he would stay. Plus…the last time he had seen Heero, the boy had been worried about him. It was kind of…endearing.
“Shinigami?” Duo burrowed into the blankets. He didn’t want to be Shinigami yet. Maybe in an hour or two, but the door opened anyway. “When you’re ready, you can come meet the rest of the Angels and then we’ll explain what happened to you.”
“No.” Treize frowned, but agreed. He wasn’t even sure if the boy had just refused the Angels or the explanation.
“Alright. If you don’t want to meet them today, we can-”
“I’ll meet them.” Duo stated suddenly, sitting up to look at the taller man. “They’re already waiting to meet me so I won’t turn them away, but I want to know what happened first.” If he really was suppose to be the ruler of this place, Treize would have to do as he said.
“You went through the gateway. It connects us to earth so we can come and go to collect souls. If you had fallen asleep…you would have been stuck there.” Duo nodded as he slid out of bed. He had gotten his answer and now he had to meet the rest of the Angels. “I had something made for you, if you would like it.” Something made for him? He couldn’t remember ever getting something made for him before.
Treize smiled as he held out a rectangular box to the boy and watched violet eyes light up. He had to remember that while Duo might look and act like an adult, he really didn’t know how to take on the responsibilities of one. Duo had nearly jumped over the bed to get the box and Treize laughed when the braided boy ripped the box open to get to what was inside. It was like watching a five year old on their birthday. He watched as violet eyes widened as the boy pulled the obviously expensive fabric from the box.
“Can I try it on?” Treize just nodded and found himself laughing when the boy pushed him from the room and closed the door. It seemed he had just acquired another son. He couldn’t help but laugh harder at the thought. Maybe not a son, but a son in law. He would explain to both Duo and Heero what was happening to their bodies when they asked, but for now he would take things one step at a time.
When the boy finally came out of his room, Treize felt his breath catch. He had known the boy was the God of Death, but it didn’t sink in until just now. The man hadn’t been sure about what to buy for the boy, but the black billowy shirt and pants were perfect. The pants had taken him longer to pick out than the shirt that the boy was now wearing, though that may have been because the legs were tight up to the knees and then billowed out the rest of the way up to the boy’s bottom where they fit snuggly again. Treize had also grabbed a pair of knee high boots on a whim and now the boy looked…like a Lord. No, not even a Lord…this boy was the God of Death.
“I look funny.” The older Angel immediately found himself shaking his head.
“You look great Duo. Take your place and if you have enough energy after you’re done, I’ll have Milliardo show you around.” Duo gave a small smile and softly nodded. He might feel ridiculous in this getup but it was a small price to pay for suddenly having everything he wanted.
