(…) Author’s Notes
A man with noble robes of gold and red stood upon his guests as other nobles visited and danced while the children ran and played. Two men stood on either side of the man, also dressed in high class clothing as they eyed anyone who got close to the man. They wore matching masks, a symbol of them being guards. Today was a special day. Today was the day of a certain noble son’s birthday. The son was turning ten. As said son came up to his father with excitement, wanting his father to join him in the party, the man simply turned his son away. He was only there to keep an eye on his son and nothing more. The child pouted, but did as his father said and joined the other children, already forgetting his disappointment.
If the child would’ve looked closer, he would’ve noticed that his father was sweating nervously. The man turned his son away because he was worried about his safety. He kept his gaze in front of him and tried not to scream at the situation he was in. A voice behind him whispered threateningly to the noble as one of the guards held a blade to the frightened man’s back. “Our Master is very displeased in your efforts to keep an alliance with us. He warned you if you ever told anyone about your business with the Shinobi (ninja) clan, the consequences would be dire. Now that you have broken your word, he believes a termination is in order. You have been sentenced to death by Master Koga no Hara and we would be much obliged if you cooperated. After this event, we will escort you to the gardens, where you may have a peaceful death. Now, Nago no Yoshitaka, enjoy the rest of your night while you can, but you will not move from this spot (In case the guy told anyone about his situation).” The disguised assassin placed his blade back in its hiding place as both ‘guards’ watched the man with piercing gazes, neither taking their sights off of him.
The night dragged on as Nago no Yoshitaka accepted the knowledge of his fate. He took in this evening, his last night. He no longer sweated bullets, instead, he watched his son, for the final time. He relished in the smile on his son’s face and his laughter, the appearance of his beautiful wife, the sound of the music filling the air, the taste of the expensive food and the divine wine. In fact, after a sip of his wine, that he got from a passing servant, he felt a little strange. His vision became blurry and his head spun. He didn’t have that much to drink, did he? He set his glass down as he tried to get a hold of his bearings.
“Are you alright, sir?” Asked one of the disguised assassins, no longer in a hushed tone.
The man put a hand on his head as if he would be able to see things straight if he held his head still. “Uh, actually, I would like to lay down. I believe I am feeling rather tired.” He answered wearily as the guards guided him toward his room.
As soon as they got there, Yoshitaka went to his bed and collapsed. The guards waited until they were sure the man wasn’t breathing. One of them stepped closer to check his pulse and nodded to the other. “Mission accomplished.” Without hesitation, the two exited the deceased’s window and scaled the wall that protected the palace. The actual guards that were pacing the area didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary as the two made their escape. When the assassins left the grounds, they took off their disguises, revealing their black clothes underneath so they could blend into the night, as they hurried back to Edo.
When they returned, they approached their Master and took off their masks as they kneeled before him. “We have succeeded in the assignment you requested, Master.”
Koga no Hara seemed very pleased at the news. His dark blue and gold robes bunched around him as he sat on a cushion and drank his tea. The dark brown bun bobbed a little on top of his head as he nodded slightly and his handsome face formed a pleased smirk. “Excellent. I was right to send my most promised assassins, Vegeta no Hokoru (Vegeta of the Proud/Pride) and Meiyo Jin.” He gestured toward them. “You may take your leave. I shall call for you again once I have another promising assignment for you.” Koga no Hara dismissed his men and took another sip of his tea.
The two stood in unison, then turned to leave. “Oh and Vegeta.” Koga spoke out to him without his title. Vegeta stopped and turned toward his Master. “I just wanted to say that my son and I are very pleased that you accepted our invitation for tomorrow evening. I recommend you dress appropriately and have your parents accompany you. You are dismissed.”
Vegeta stared at his Master for a moment longer in mute shock before he bowed slightly and left. His partner caught up with him as soon as he left their Master’s manor. “What was that about?”
The noble growled. “Apparently, my parents took it upon themselves to respond to an invitation without my consent. They will feel my wrath.” Vegeta gripped his mask in one hand as he stormed toward his home, which was a few miles away; almost the next town.
“Oh. Well, what would you have answered in the invitation? I mean, you couldn’t have said no to the Master, even to his son.” His partner gave him a quizzical look as he wondered why they didn’t take the carriage.
Vegeta stopped. “I…I don’t know. But one thing’s for sure, I refuse to marry that spoiled bastard!” He continued his storming. “I mean, it’s one thing to do what I’m told, but to agree to an arranged marriage? Who the hell would agree to that?”
Jin nodded in understanding. “I can’t help you there, but you know, there are hundreds of people who would love to be in your position. They would just drown in the wealth and the title. I don’t see what you don’t like about the man…”
“Ha! You haven’t spoken with him. You haven’t been in his presence a million times to know what kind of a man he really is. He’s selfish, greedy and, and…infuriating!” The noble threw his hands in the air.
“But does he care about you?” Jin asked in curiosity. In this day and age, nobles marrying the same sex was nothing new. In fact, it was most smiled upon because the families thought it strengthened their bond. However, this is only with nobles. If commoners married the same sex, it was frowned upon. Jin decided to ask more about it because no one really knew anything about this arranged marriage. They just knew that the two were to be wedded to make their clans stronger and to have more allies during times of trouble. So, being closest to the noble son, Jin decided to poke around for more information.
“Weren’t you listening, Jin? I said the man is selfish. Of course he doesn’t care about me! I’m sure this is all for his own benefit!” Vegeta grumbled to himself after venting the truth.
Jin pondered at this. “Have you told your parents about this?”
“Are you kidding? They’re so ecstatic about this, they won’t even listen to a word I say regarding against it! They just ignore me and tell me how this will benefit everyone. I can’t believe they’re putting this on my shoulders! What about my happiness, huh? Why the hell do I have to be responsible for my family’s title? I just turned eighteen for God’s sake!”
“Your Highness, like it or not, you have to go through with this. You should know by now that nobles can’t control their own lives.” Jin tried to calm the young noble.
Vegeta growled. “I know. I just wish, for once, I could choose to do something in my life, rather than have someone decide it for me.” He continued toward his home as his colleague followed.
They walked a ways in silence, then Jin decided to lighten the mood. “Hey, how about that mission, huh? Dead by poison. They never see it coming!” Jin laughed. He always loved it when they told their victims how they’re going to be assassinated, but then kill them in a different way. In a way, it almost makes it easier for the victim. Instead of worrying about their impending doom, they die sooner and sometimes less painfully, but unexpectedly. However, it’s not always by poison. Sometimes, they slit the victim’s throat whenever they have an opportune moment. Other times, it only takes a few seconds if the victim is alone. Either way, neither the assassin nor the victim know when they’re actually going to die. It makes the job more…thrilling that way.
Vegeta smiled softly at the memory and continued to listen to his partner until they reached his manor. When they came up to the gate, the guards standing in front of it bowed to the young noble, “Welcome home, Your Highness. Did your mission go well?” One of them spoke.
The young noble didn’t stop, trying to ignore his guards as best as he could. He knew how they operated. Even though he ranks above them, they still only obey his father, regardless of what he says. “Of course.” He passed them and headed to the front doors.
However, he wasn’t going to get too far without one of them escorting him. Despite the fact that his partner was still with him. “How come you didn’t take a carriage, sire? You know it’s dangerous for you to walk back on your own, especially at night.” The guard looked at the young noble in concern; not even noticing the escort he already had.
Vegeta growled. “It would be just as dangerous if I took a carriage. Now, as you can see, I made it.” The doors opened before Vegeta approached them, revealing his parents as they greeted their son home.
“Welcome home, my son. How was your mission? Did Lord Koga reply about tomorrow evening?” His father stepped forward to place a hand on his son’s shoulder.
However, Vegeta didn’t feel it was necessary to return the greeting. He glared at the man and growled. “Speaking of that-” He was interrupted when Jin spoke up.
“Sire, I shall take my leave now.” Vegeta looked behind him at his colleague to see him bow and wait for a response.
“Of course. Good night.” He watched as his partner responded to the goodbye and left. He turned when his mother gasped, who was just noticing the front drive was empty of a carriage.
“Oh, dear! You walked? That’s so dangerous! What if someone came up from behind and ambushed you! Or…what if they jumped down from the trees!” Lady Hokoru held her hands up to her face in shock of the possibilities.
Vegeta sighed. “Don’t worry about it, Mother. I made it back, didn’t I?” He pushed his way passed his parents and inside the ‘safety’ of his home. Everyone always seemed to overreact about his safety, especially as of late. It could be because of Master Koga’s plan in him marrying his son, Ookami (wolf). If anything happened to him now, his clan could kiss that title goodbye. “Selfish bastards.” He grumbled, but no one heard.
The only reason why the young noble was into this line of work was because his Master suggested it. He thought being an assassin would strengthen the boy and turn him into a powerful man. He was half right. Though, the power comes from the family, not the ability to kill. The only reason Master Koga no Hara took any interest in the boy was because he saw him fit to marry his son. Oh yes. His master had planned this from the beginning.
As Vegeta headed towards his room, he had several servants pestering him about his needs. He told them, in a none too polite manner, that he was going to bed without dinner; claiming he wasn’t hungry. Then, he angrily shooed the servants away and locked himself in his room. He stood in the darkness of his room and sighed. He watched the rays of the moon eerily shine upon the floor for a moment, then started changing out of his black outfit and into something more casual. The young noble always went out a night for himself. Either to ponder over his killings or to simply forget about the stress in his life. For this night, it was neither. He just simply wanted to get away.
After dressing, he went to his window and left the room. He easily slipped past the guards and headed for town. Vegeta loved going into the town at night. The place was always busy and he could easily find something to do. Once he arrived, he headed straight for a dinky little place that sold alcohol and women. It wasn’t much to look at, but the place was never empty. He entered and took a seat in the back and away from the crowd. Another thing that he loved about this place was that he didn’t have to worry about anybody finding out who he was. Since his parents kept him pretty well hidden and as for his line of work, well, he was in disguise anyway.
After a few minutes, a girl finally came up to him and asked what he would like. He ordered the usual and told her to keep them coming until he was no longer coherent. She nodded excitedly, then made her way through the crowd. Vegeta looked at the crowd in front of him. Apparently, they were having an arm wrestling match. The noble scowled at the game. Things like that never really interested him…that is, until a fight breaks out. That’s something that he would pay money to see. It’s even better when they’re drunk. They’re so out of it that they can’t even see their opponent in front of them. Then, when he’s caught laughing at the ridiculous scene, they want to pick a fight with him. Any fool would’ve ran, but Vegeta agrees…every single time. Only because it’s even more hilarious when they pass out as they try to beat him up. Vegeta chuckled softly at the memories. Oh, the nights just keep going on like that.
After what seemed like an hour, the girl finally returned with his drink. “Here you are.” She set down a small cup and poured a clear colored liquid from the bottle in her hands and set it down on the table. “I’m so sorry for the wait sir.” She bowed in apology. “As you can see, we’re really busy tonight.”
Vegeta scowled at the girl. “That’s no excuse. You’re busy every night. Just make sure it doesn’t happen again.” He downed the liquid in the small cup and poured himself another.
The girl apologized and bowed again before the noble yelled at her to leave his sight. Vegeta was about to have his second round when he spotted someone that caught his attention from across the dinky shack. He scrutinized the man that sat so calmly in his seat and sipped on…what looked like tea. A straw hat sat on the table and a small white cup rested in his hands. His hair was a wild disarray of spikes and his clothes looked to be of a loose, white and blood red samurai’s attire. Though, Vegeta didn’t see a sword. He must have it on him. The calm warrior smiled at the scene around himself as he sipped from his tea again.
The young noble scowled at the stranger as he sipped at his tea. He downed his liquor in one gulp in response to the tranquil tea drinker. He wondered what a person like that is doing in a place like this. Perhaps he was a traveler or maybe he was studying some art of sword fighting. Then again, he could have this whole ‘samurai’ appearance wrong. Vegeta’s questions were answered when a large drunken man staggered and fell; heading straight for the table the tea drinker was sitting at. Suddenly, a whole series of events played out so quickly, Vegeta was wondering if he saw it at all. The man quickly pulled his sword from his side, still sheathed, and pushed it underneath the hat to flip it in the air. Before the hat landed, he tossed his tea to a nearby table and quickly stood. The tea cup landed safely on the nearby table, never spilling a drop, and the hat landed almost perfectly atop of his head. The man calmly walked over to his new table as the drunken man crashed onto the table, splitting it in two.
Vegeta’s jaw dropped at the display, including his small cup that he had in his hand; preparing to refill it. It crashed noisily on the floor, spilling what little alcohol was in it. Half the people in the room looked over at him to see what the noise was while they completely ignored the samurai as he, once again, continued drinking his tea as if nothing happened. The noble quickly recovered at the stares he was receiving and glared at them all as they went about their business. He turned his glare to the samurai, he was sure of it now, and studied the man like he was about to do another stupendous trick.
And that’s what how it was for most of the night. The stranger continued drinking his tea, while Vegeta stared at him, completely forgetting the beverage in front of him. The noise continued around them, but he tuned them out as he concentrated on the mysterious man. Apparently, the stranger got a little unnerved from the noble’s staring that he started stealing some glimpses himself. Vegeta’s eyes narrowed from the glances, but didn’t turn away. As this little ‘game’ continued for a while, the stranger seemed to have had enough and stood. He left his empty tea cup on the table and headed for the exit. Vegeta watched the stranger closely as he left, then followed him.
As soon as he reached the almost empty street, he looked around and spotted the stranger slowly heading in one direction. His straw hat covering his eyes as he strode into the night. Vegeta smirked as he saw this as another mission. He was going to challenge this man. After all, it’s not everyday he met a guy as skilled as that. For once, Vegeta wanted to know the life of another killer, rather than assassinate them on the spot. He waited until the stranger rounded a corner, then climbed up a building and onto a roof. He’d have a much better vantage point from up here. He quietly scaled the rooftops as he followed the tea drinking man. The man just turned to a dead end. He raced around to keep up with the man, but once he caught up, he was no where to be found. Vegeta looked at the empty square in confusion, then looked around. He stopped when he caught something at the corner of his eye. The samurai was climbing a concrete wall, then leaped to a tree branch and went from there. Vegeta smirked. It seems the samurai wants to play.
He leaped down from the roof and landed in the square, then hopped over a hay wagon and scaled the same wall the stranger climbed. From there, he leaped onto another rooftop to get the same height advantage and ran along them to keep up with the samurai. It was a good thing he didn’t have too much to drink tonight, otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the extremely skilled warrior. The noble grinned at his competition and relished in the adrenaline it was giving him. Unfortunately, this game of cat and mouse couldn’t continue much longer. A cliff up ahead signified the end of the road and Vegeta hopped onto a branch and leaped from tree to tree as he caught up right behind the man. However, he was too late as his target disappeared from the cliff and he stopped on the last tree. He looked down to see if the man committed suicide, but scratched that idea when a body wasn’t found. The cliff wasn’t too high, but below were jagged rocks that could kill on impact. He searched all around the area and even looked behind him to see if he’d been had, but didn’t see nor hear the stranger.
Vegeta leaned against the trunk of the tree he was standing in and crossed his arms. He found out many things in this whole night. That the man he was chasing was indeed a warrior, that the warrior knew he was being tailed, and that he was going to be running into him again. The noble smirked.

Sorry if the places mentioned in this story are wrong in some way. >.> After all, some of them could’ve changed over the time and I simply don’t know anything about Japan’s or China’s history. I looked up some info, but I didn’t try very hard. :/ So, I’m going by the places mentioned in Samurai Champloo. ^^’ (Guess where the name Nago comes from! X)) Also, I’m not too proud of this chapter, but I assure you it gets better. :) At least, ‘I’ think so, hehe.
I tried to get creative with the names, hehe. Sorry if they don’t make sense, they’re not supposed to. I just gathered a couple words together and put ‘no’ in between them to make them sound important. :/ Did it work? I actually tried at Vegeta’s name. And with Ookami’s name, I thought I’d try and match it up with Koga. :3 Since I stole it off of Inuyasha hehe. I try my hardest to leave out Japanese words in my stories because I don’t know if I’ll screw them up or not and then I’ll get flamed for it. :/ After all, I’m not Japanese. But, in this story, it’s necessary. So, feel free to correct me, hehe. Also, I’m just gonna post the first chapter for now, in case anyone of you do want to make some corrections on the names or something. :/ Then, after all is right, I’ll post more. ^^ Depending on if you guys want more. :) Yeah…gonna need some feedback hehe. Please don’t flame me! >< *holds metal shield up in front of herself and waits for the heat*
