Fire & Metal
---------------
Roy Mustang paced the small bedroom frantically, his dark eyes glancing towards the still figure on the narrow bed. The war wasn’t going at all as the State had planned. Whoever had been dealing out State secrets had done their job well. Nearly all of the State forces were gone and alchemists were being hunted and killed. It had been a streak of luck that had led Roy Mustang to Edward Elric. He didn’t know what the boy had seen, or what he’d been through but he was glad to know that he was still alive. Ever since Edward had been a child Mustang had felt responsible for his well-being, and now that Ed was eighteen Mustang still felt just as responsible for him.
“Ugh.” The sound came from the bed and Roy whipped around to see that Ed was finally beginning to stir.
“What the hell?” Ed’s voice was deeper, but still rough and lilting. It was obvious that the alchemist was disoriented, his blonde hair loose from its usual braid and falling around his shoulders.
“Fullmetal.” Mustang’s voice was just as stern and stoic as Ed remembered, and he frowned as the man came into view. Gone was Mustang’s usual, blue uniform, instead, the man was in a pair of black slacks and a white shirt, his hands bare of the gloves that he normally wore.
“General…” Ed cursed as he tried to pull himself upright but found that his mechanical arm wasn’t functioning properly.
Roy took the chair beside of Ed’s bed, his face tense, “What happened Edward? Can you remember?”
Oh, he could remember allright. Slumping back down into the bed, Edward stared at the ceiling as he recalled the last skirmish that he’d been in. In an attempt to keep the procured philosopher’s stone safe, Ed and Al had entered into the battle, risking their lives to keep the stone out of the enemy’s hands. Edward could still remember the way Al had tearfully said goodbye as Envy had smashed through the seal that had bonded Al’s soul to the armor.
“Al’s gone?” Roy asked.
“Yeah.” Ed whispered softly, not wanting to think about it. Having his brother gone was like missing a part of his own soul.
Roy rubbed a hand over his face. He’d heard rumors that Al was gone but he hadn’t wanted to believe them until he heard it from Edward himself.
“I’ve got to get you out of here,” Roy said suddenly, standing, “the State’s forces are practically dissolved and we’re right on the border of the war. For now, I need to get you as far away from the front lines as possible.” He went over to the packs that he carried, checking and making sure that everything was packed.
“Why? Mustang, why does it matter what happens to me?” Edward asked, turning his head to regard the General as he rifled through his packs.
“Because, Ed, when other soldiers and alchemists see you they feel hope. You’re the most gifted alchemist the State has ever seen. Only you can stop Envy.” Between Al and Ed the two had managed to take down Sloth, Wrath, and Gluttony.
“Not without Al.” Ed rolled over in the bed, turning his back to Mustang.
“Look,” Roy approached the bed again and placed a hand on Ed’s shoulder, “I know I’m not Al, but I’ll do everything in my power to help you, okay? We need you, Ed, the State needs you. Don’t abandon us now.” The two sat there that way in silence for a long while.
“So what’s your plan?” Ed finally asked.
“Well, first I’m going to get you out of here, and then we’re going to hole up somewhere for a while. You need time to rest, recover, and train.” Mustang set the packs by the door and then turned towards Ed, who was sitting up in the bed now, his good hand throwing the sheet back.
Involuntarily, Mustang found his eyes trailing down Edward’s bare chest, which was muscled and toned. There were scars marring his otherwise flawless skin, and the metal of his right arm gleamed in the sunlight that came through the window. The people that had so kindly taken Edward into their home had stripped him of his clothes and given them a wash, which left Ed in only his boxers.
“Clothes. Right.” Mustang began pulling out clothes for Edward to wear, some that would disguise the famous alchemist. He pulled out the clothes that the family had washed for Ed, but left the teenager’s red coat in the bottom of his pack. Instead, he pulled out a black, hooded jacket, and a pair of black gloves, so that Ed could hide his mechanical hand.
Ed managed to get his pants on fine, and he easily stamped into his black boots. It was the shirt and jacket that gave him trouble, since his right arm wasn’t working, “Could you…?” He trailed off, looking towards Mustang.
The man approached, took Ed’s sleeveless shirt and pulled it over the blonde’s head. Grabbing the jacket as well, Mustang helped feed the mechanical arm through the sleeve. Mustang stepped back as Edward stood. The kid had actually grown a bit taller, but not by much. At eighteen the top of his head barely reached Mustang’s shoulder, but still, it was taller than he’d been the last time Roy had seen Edward.
“I’m going to need some help with the hair too.” Ed said as he turned his back to Mustang.
“Your hair’s gotten long.” Mustang observed as he combed a hand through the long blonde hair that now hung well below the shorter man’s shoulder blades. At Edward’s shrug, Mustang quickly braided the blonde tresses in Ed’s usual fashion. “Let’s get going then.”
Without saying goodbye to the kind people that had helped Edward, the two men stole out of the window and jogged away from the home. It was important that they put as much distance between themselves and the city as possible.
“I’m going to need to go by and see Winry to get this arm back in working order.” Ed told Roy as they hurried through the woods near to the old dirt road that wound its way out of the city.
Roy frowned, “I’m afraid that won’t be possible. If we showed up at Winry’s it would only put her in danger. You’re Envy’s top priority right now, Ed, and she’ll burn anyone close to you if it means getting to you sooner. That’s why we’ve got to go somewhere small and somewhere that’s not connected to you.” He glanced sideways at Ed, “I’ll see what I can do to get your arm back in working order, allright?”
Edward sighed and rolled his eyes, “Great, it’ll never work.” He grumbled cynically.
The two men travelled in companionable silence while they hiked, the sound of their breathing the only noise aside from the crunch of twigs and leaves beneath their boots. When the sun was beginning to sink behind the horizon the two men decided to stop for a bit of rest and to give Mustang a chance to look at Ed’s arm.
“How hard can this be?” Roy said as Ed sat, leaning against a fallen tree, his feet stretched out towards the small fire that they’d built.
“Winry would be so insulted.” Ed said as he shrugged out of his coat, revealing his mechanical arm.
With a wrench in one hand, and a screwdriver in the other, Roy began inspecting Ed’s arm, his lips drawn down into a frown of concentration. Ed watched, slightly amused as he studied the General’s face. The man’s dark eyes were lined in a light set of wrinkles that fanned out away from his eyes. It was obvious that Mustang had seen a lot in these last couple of years of war. His features were still strong, however, still as handsome as Ed remembered.
“There! Finished!” Mustang said with a bit of pride in his voice.
Raising his right arm Ed smiled, “It’s not perfect,” some of the movements of the mechanical arm hurt, “but it’ll do.” He said, saying thank you in his own way.
Edward sat in silence for a moment, watching as Roy worked around the small camp site that they’d set up, “Do you remember the last time we spoke, Roy?” The soft way Ed talked and the use of his first name set Mustang on alert.
“Yes, I remember.” And he did, he would never forget that day for as long as he lived.
After days of being pent up in the State library, Roy Mustang had finally given in to his more physical side and he’d kissed Edward, something he’d thought about on more than one occasion. The kiss had been passionate, heated, and had stirred Roy’s lust like no one ever had.
In reckless abandon Roy had stripped Edward without a moment’s hesitation, and soon the two men had found themselves writhing against each other naked, until they were both satiated. The guilt of his actions had hit Roy as soon as the deed was done, after all, Edward was only a child.
“This was a mistake, Fullmetal.” He had used Edward’s title as a way to distance himself, “This should never have happened. You’re just a kid and the State would have my head if they knew I’d had relations with a child. This can never happen again.”
In Edward’s head the General might as well have been telling him that he was only a cheap fling, and something that Roy deeply regretted. The two had parted that day after a shouting match.
That had been two years ago.
“You still think I’m a kid?” Edward wanted to know, his eyes roving over the General’s visage, finding him even better looking in casual clothes.
Mustang, who sat on the other side of the fire, studied Edward’s face through the flames, finding that the man’s golden eyes seared into his, “No, I don’t.” And he truly didn’t, he knew deep inside that he’d never thought of Edward as a kid back then, but he’d been afraid of his feelings and needed some way to separate himself from the Fullmetal alchemist.
The two men sat for a while longer in silence until Mustang doused the fire, “Get some sleep. We’ve got a lot of walking to do.”
