Rei walked up to the front of the building of his new school. Looking the building up and down, he frowns. He could already tell this was going to be a long day, from the minute he woke up to the moment his parents told him he was going to attend school in the next prefecture. You see, the Kon family had a highly recognized reputation back at their old city, but due to their son and an incident that occurred four months ago, the family became unwanted after giving in to the rumors that went on saying that Rei - No, he couldn't think about that right now. He had other things to worry about now, like fitting in.
Taking in a breath of courage, he exhaled slowly and closed his eyes. 'Just relax, this is a new school, which means no one can judge you. No one can know what you know, and they never will.' Assuring himself of these things over and over, Rei walks into the building with confidence only to be shoved by someone walking in behind him.
"Hey! Watch it!" He barks, angrily.
The student placed a hand over his mouth as if saying "Oops!" before he laughed, continuing on his way into the building.
Rei growled. The anger in him continuing to boil over. 'Red hair, blue eyes, tall. I'll remember that kid, and when I get him alone...'
He couldn't finish his threat, he was already starting to feel bad for getting upset in the first place. I mean, come on! The guy just shoved him, what was the big deal? Yeah, he had to be cool, be smooth. The rest of the year is going to go perfectly. Rei wouldn't feel the stinging thoughts of everyone whispering behind his back, gawking or pointing at him because of what they heard and wonder if it's true.
So, brushing himself off mentally, the Chinese teen held his head high and strolls into the high school. Once inside he let the cool air from the built in air conditioners hit his face and he smiled. 'Just relax and greet people with a gentle smile. If you look guilty, then you are guilty.' Opening his eyes, his heart stopped.
"Hahaha." A group of girls laughed. The three of them hunched together in a little giggling circle; pointing with their eyes aimed at Rei.
"Look at him..." Said a boy with shaggy blond hair that spread out kind of like a palm tree. "Have you ever seen anything so funny?" He continued to point and laugh.
"I heard he got transferred here from Osaka for fighting with someone." Another guy was whispering loud enough for Rei to hear him. His long hair looked like an evil mass of blue black crows drilling into their target's eyes, seeing into his thoughts and laughing at them.
There was another guy, short with shaggy brown hair covering what looked to be his entire head with a pair of glasses - thick as the bottom of a soda bottle - peeked nervously from behind a locker door as if the new student would run over and attack him right there.
Rei could hear his heart beating in his ears. Flashes of his former friends, from his other school ran through his mind as though they were really there. Pointing and laughing, just as they had when they began to hear the rumors about him.
'Well if they want me, they can just try and take me.' Rei mentally threatens.
The boy with the evil crows for hair hurried toward him at an enormous speed. Rei tensed, he may have called them to come to him, but he wasn't ready for the assault. Scrunching his eyes shut, he waits for the impact.
"Hi!" The bluenet nearly shouted his greeting.
Rei opens his eyes, relieved that everything that went on in his head stayed just where he had seen it. Looking left from right, he confirmed that the group of girls was actually laughing at a magazine that read: Heart Strings, across the cover. The young boy who was hiding behind his locker, was actually looking at a mirror while he adjusted his glasses. And the blond, who had pointed him out, was now talking with a guy who seemed to be recovering from a recent crying session, after picking up his belongings that fell from his backpack.
Turning back to look at the guy who had just spoken to him, Rei smiles. "Hi."
"I'm Tyson, who're you?" He bowed quickly, glad for the Chinese teen's response, he thought for sure he'd have to say it again.
"Rei. Rei Kon." He began to breathe a little easier.
The bluenet smirked to keep back his bursting joy. "Nice to meet you, Rei." He looked him over. "You're new here, right?"
"How can you tell?" Rei was taken aback by Tyson's aggressive presence.
"Well, duh, you're wearing cities." He tugged at Rei's light green shirt. "No uni' means you're either new or... well, you wanna be some kind of rebel."
"You got me," Rei laughed. "I'm a rebel."
Tyson laughed at the joke, then took Rei's arm. "You're cool, Rei. I've never seen anyone that looks like you do."
"Oh, that's because... well..." He lowered his head. "It's hard to explain."
Tyson shrugged. "Eh, no biggie. Besides, people in this school like exotic looks." He waved to a friend of his. "It's an instant 'in' with these clowns."
Without Rei even knowing it, Tyson had begun to lead him down the hall towards... He wasn't really sure, but he obviously had no say in the matter, as his feet followed along without resistance. Curious as the feline-looks he resembled, Rei cleared his throat before asking.
"So, where're we going?" Asked the newbie.
"Boy's bathroom." Tyson answered easily. "This is where all the cool guys hang about before classes start."
"I really should be heading to the main office to pick up my uniform." Rei looked over his shoulder in the direction they had just come from.
"Really?" Tyson stopped as fast as he began to walk in the first place. "Hmph, go on then. I guess I'll catch up with you later. Right?"
"Yeah, right..." Rei watched as the Japanese teen walked into the men's room without another thought of him passing his attention. 'Boy. He's quick to turn on ya... Forget about it, I don't need friends like that anyway.'
Turning on his heels, he heads towards the front office to see the administration's board. He had to get his schedule and his uniform and knowing this school, he would have to put it on right away. Something he didn't really mind doing. The less he stuck out, the better.
The front office was large and rather clean, in Rei's opinion. Either the ladies that worked inside were neat-freaks, or the janitors do a really good job when they clean. It didn't matter which, and he didn't really care. Right now he needed to locate... 'That must be him.'
A tall man with short, black hair lined with a few strands of gray, walked out of a room and on the door read: Principal Takeshi Aoki.
"Sir!" Pipes the Chinese teen.
"I'll see you after school, honey." He was on his cell phone and just hanging up as Rei approached him. "Good bye."
"Principal Aoki?" He questioned in-case he had been wrong to assume this man as the head of the school.
"That's me, you must be Rei Kon." He bowed politely, before gesturing a hand for him to follow him into his office.
"Yes, I wanted to know where I could pick up my uniform and things?" He walked into the man's office.
It's very dark in inside. It was as though the sky had switched to night time just for him. Rei's back straightened, he felt like ice was skinning him being in this office, and he didn't like it. Why would the principal bring him into a dark office anyway? A scraping sound, soft but surely heard, welled up in Rei's ears. The scraping became so loud that he had to cover his ears hoping to escape it.
'Rrr, what is that?' His heart rate picked up. He was ready to run, when...
"Sorry about that." A lamp was switched on, the light revealed the principal behind his desk.
His strong brown eyes manage to show magnificently in the light, almost making them look as golden as Rei's. He didn't trust that.
"I can't seem to keep it bright enough in here." Aoki vaguely explained.
"Maybe if you open the curtai-."
He was cut off as Aoki pulled open the curtains, showing him that his window was facing what appeared to be another building. Why did they school stick the principal in this particular room in the first place? It was questionable about their views on the man's authority.
"Mr. Kon," he goes for a more friendly position. "Rei, you're here for your uniform and class schedule, yes?"
"Yes sir." He slips uneasily over to the leather chair in front of the man's desk. Cautiously, he sits.
"Your things are out in the main office, but I brought you in here because I wanted to speak with you about the situation at your old school."
"What about it?" He decided to keep his attention on the lamp light, instead of the looming principal, made larger and almost ominous by his oversized shadow on the back wall.
"It says that you were kicked out for fighting?" He looks down into a folder.
"Correct."
"Needless to say, I don't want to see any of that sort of behavior around here."
"No sir. I understand completely. My fighting days are over." He nods feeling uncomfortably.
He didn't feel right in the room. He feels trapped. Locked away. Almost like the man had brought him into the room as a sacrifice; and he would slyly be leaving shortly, with Rei still seated wondering when he would come back. He smirked to himself.
'Now I'm just being paranoid.' He looks the man in the eyes. 'See, no big deal. He wants to discuss my history; he already told you what he knows - or at least what you wanted him to know. Chill.' He shut off his inner thoughts, returning to the real world. "Is that all, sir?"
The man pursed his lips, then nodded. "That'll be all. I expect good things from you, Rei."
"You'll be hearing nothing but good things about me, principal Aoki. I swear." He stood, glad for the freedom. "Have a nice day, sir."
"You too - and Mr. Kon," he reached for the light switch under the lampshade.
"Yes?"
"I'll be keeping an eye on you." With that he flicked the lamp off, creating darkness so thick it was as if principal Aoki vanished within it.
Rei closed the door and shuddered. It wasn't so much the man but the way he had said what he said, about keeping an eye on him. It made him nervous. 'Shake it off Rei. Get dressed and head to class. We're going to be normal today; clear our good name... Just don't blow it.'
"Here you are, Mr. Kon." A lovely young secretary hands over a clear package with his clothes inside.
It's a black uniform jacket and pants with a button-down white shirt to wear beneath it. It made him think of a priest or someone of that nature. The uniform was nice. Certainly a lot better than the light blue ones he had to wear at his old school. Atop the clothes, is a little index card with his schedule typed out on it.
"Have a nice day." She verbally sent him off.
"I will, thanks." Taking his things with a bow, he walked out of the office down the hall to the bathroom that the student, Tyson, had shown him. He just hoped it was empty in-case he wasn't 'cool' enough to enter yet.
Rei hadn't even heard the bell ring for class but the halls were already empty. He could feel his nerves creeping up on him again and he hated it. Pushing them down, he let out a breath to relieve himself of the tension. When he reached the door, he used his foot to crack it open. Glancing in with his eyes, he saw no one. However that didn't mean much, someone could be in the stalls or further out of his view.
"Is anyone in there?" He asks in a low tone.
No response. It must be empty. Pushing the door open farther, Rei walked to the first stall he saw then went inside. Dropping his backpack to the floor, he then started to undo the buttons on his shirt. He slid it off then folded it up, stuffing it into his bag. Once his upper half was bare, he put on the uniform jacket. It was a comfortable fit.
It started low at first, but it was noticeable. A scraping sound. The same one he had heard back in the principal's office. What was it? And why was it growing louder? He heard a voice in the background, something like laughter or whispering. The same voices he heard in his head when the rumors about him began.
'No, Rei, relax! Relax!' He closed his eyes tightly. 'Why didn't I put my pants on first?!'
The bathroom door popped open just as he got the last button snapped on his shirt. He froze like a deer in headlights, waiting to see what came... though he knew it would be bad.
The first thing he heard was laughter. High, scratchy laughter that sounded as though it had to be practiced for a long time before it resembled even half way acceptable for a laugh. Second came a medium tone, agreeing with something either the laughter or another boy had said. Either way the disembodied voices now stood before the large mirrors of the bathroom, right in front of the stall Rei was in.
'Don't find me... please don't find me...' He chants.
"Hey Bry', you got a smoke?" A red head, with the medium voice asked. He was looking at his reflection in the mirror with a smile, pleased with what he saw.
A guy with short cut gray hair, whom Rei could only assume is Bryan, turned to the red head with regards. "I don't know, Tala," he addressed the red head. "Since the school has been so kind as to frisk me every morning for them, I don't lend them out as freely as I used to."
A smirk graced Tala's lips. "And you're charging me?" It sounded more like a statement than a question.
"You tell me, you're the one who never seems to finish them." Bryan now watched Tala through the mirror.
The other boy, quiet, though rather snarky looking, just watched the pair's exchange with bored interest as though he had been through this time after time.
Tala shoved his friend by the shoulder, he then grabbed at his bulge giving it a squeeze. "Why waste my talent by sucking on that... When I could..." He leaned in closer to him, to do what Rei could only guess was something fresh.
Good, they're distracted. But as luck would have it. "Achoo!" Rei bit his lips in, hoping they wouldn't care. But luck was not on his side.
The trio turned their heads; Bryan and Tala advanced on the door, yanking it open with ease because Rei had expected no one to come in during class time, so he didn't bother locking it.
"Well well well, what have we got here?" Tala grinned from ear to ear like an insane Cheshire cat. Or a sadistic clown, which would certainly be fitting with his hair style that resembled flames coming from the side of his head.
"Hmph, looks like new meat." Bryan remarks with amusement. Reaching in he pulled out his prey and tossed him with enough force to have Rei fall to the floor.
"Aah..." He couldn't recover in time to get up, so the tall red head gave him a hand.
Holding him so that Rei had his back to him with his arms pinned tightly against his sides, Tala nodded for Bryan to come toward him, sure that Rei wouldn't be a threat. "What were you doing in there, new kid?" Asks the red head.
"I'll bet he was taking a shit." Bryan and his friends laugh.
"Guys, leave him alone." Said the one with two colored hair. Though he made no real movement to stop anything from happening.
"No, I wanna have a little fun." Says Tala. "So stay out of it, Kai."
Bryan looked Rei over then nods. "I get it, you're the new transfer here... And look," he walks over to the stall Rei had been in. "He was changing his little clothes." Grabbing the pants to the uniform, he walks back over to his friend. "Maybe we should give him a hand."
"I think that's a good idea."
Rei began to struggle to get free, but it failed him. "Let me go!"
Bryan put his hands on the waistband of the new guy's boxers then, hooking his thumbs on the sides he slides them down to the knee. "Haha, look what I found - or I should say almost didn't find."
Tala peeked over Rei's shoulder and laughed as well. "How cute, he has hair there... Hey, Bryan," he looks back up at his friend. "Maybe he wasn't taking a shit after all and he was messing with himself."
"No, I wasn't! Let me go!" He swung his leg up, kicking Bryan under his chin.
The gray haired teen grunted from the contact then shook off the pain. "You little shit. You're dead."
"Try it!" Rei snaps back.
Just as Bryan was about to disfigure the trapped new meat, a hand lands on his shoulder and him turned around. "I said leave him, Kuznetsov. Now!"
Bryan backed off, but not because of Kai's angered words, he had simply grown bored with the game. Kai flashed the red head a 'death glare'. Tala only laughed in response.
"Kai, you really need to grow up, and learn how to have more fun."
"With growth comes maturity, not diapers and a game of peek-a-boo in someone else's pants."
"Ouch, that hurt." He rolled his frosty-blue eyes and walked out of the bathroom with his friend.
Kai looked over at the newbie, who was straightening himself out and putting on the pants of his uniform. He seemed to be muttering something under his breath - calming like words perhaps.
"Hey, are you ok?" Asks kinder of the three, while coming over to him to check.
"And if I just calm down..." Rei stopped what he was saying. "Yeah, no problem. Stuff like this happens to me everyday."
Kai smirked, crouching down beside him. "For your sake, I hope that's a lie. People eat pushovers in this school."
Rei scoffed. "Tell me something I don't know."
Kai held out a hand to him; Rei was hesitant to shake it, but he took it anyway. He thought it was a strange thing to do, but this guy was like him - a foreigner to Japan. "My name is Kai Hiwatari; and not everyone around here is a jerk."
"Could have fooled me... I'm Rei." He stared at him. He had to admit he was a looker, but something about him seemed a bit off. "So, Kai, why would you help me? Aren't the three of you friends?"
"We are... but that doesn't mean I wanna get whacked." He stood saying that, heading to the exit. "I keep my conscience clear." He mutters.
"Whacked? What does that mean?" Rei gathered his backpack and clothes, stuffing them inside as he walked after the Russian.
"Y'know," Kai shrugs. "Whacked. By that maniac with the bat - don't you watch the news?"
"No."
Kai stopped abruptly at this. His eyes were cold and serious, he began to walk towards Rei so quickly the approached teen backed up, slamming his back into a locker. "First of all, you never think of him."
"Never think of who?"
"Second, you never go anywhere alone."
"Wha-... Kai, you're starting to scare me."
"Good, then maybe you'll be smart and not end up like everyone else in town." Kai looked down the hall then back at Rei. "He knows where you are at all times. He can get you, even if you're in a concealed room with a locked door."
Rei scrunched his eyes, now he was beginning to frustrate him with the speaking in tongues thing. "Kai what are you talking about!?"
"Lil' Slugger."
Rei let that register for a moment. "Lil'... Slugger, who's that?"
"...He's like... this deranged, lunatic kid with a golden bat. They call him Lil' Slugger because of what he does when he finds you."
"What does he do?" Putting it together on his own, he says. "You mean he hits people over the head with a bat - why?" He shook his head. "Can't these people out run him?"
"He's on roller blades; rumors say he's as fast as a car. You never see him coming."
Rei waved a hand. "You're just pulling my leg, there's no such thing as a kid with a baseball bat."
"Rei..." He moved back giving the skeptic room to breathe, but he was also shoved back by a hand pressing against his chest.
"You know what," Rei points a finger. "You're just as bad as your friends, telling me these stories about weird kids with mental problems."
"It's not a lie, ask around... Watch the news tonight. I'll bet you one of the reports will be about another person getting whacked by Lil' Slugger - you just wait and see."
Rei was already heading down the hall. He didn't have time for this. He was already beyond late for his first class, and everyone seemed to wanna hold him up. He promised himself a good day and he was going to have one...
However, in the back of his mind, what Kai said had intrigued him. Maybe he will watch the news tonight... Just to see what kind of person Kai truly was. And if he lied to him... Rei was gonna make sure that he paid for it.
