The palm of Kai's hand made contact with his face with a loud smack. He stumbled backwards a few steps and touched the burning spot. The crimson eyes were burning as they looked at him.
“You goddamned overreacting jealous fucking bitch!” Kai screamed at him. “Where I go and what I do is my business! You don't own me, you fuckhead!”
Tala closed the space between them again and smacked the phoenix back, with the back of his hand.
“Why the hell were you snuggling with that mangy fucking cat? I saw you, you little slut!”
The other retired Blitzkrieg Boys quickly grabbed the two arguing men and fought to keep them away from each others throats. They had argued before, but it hadn't been this bad for a long time.
“Rei is my friend, Tala! Lee died, you fucking idiot! He just got the news today! The hell was I supposed to do? He hasn't got anyone else, now that the guys are spread all over the fucking world! You really think I go out and fuck anyone who happens to have a damned cock?” He looked at the wolf, eyes blazing, but still cold as ice. “You know what? Maybe I might as well do that. Then you'd at least have a reason to try and beat me up every time I've been out of the fucking house for more than ten minutes without you.” He shook Bryan and Ian off and started walking towards the door after grabbing his jacket and wallet. “I've had it with this. Go fuck yourself, Tala. Cause I aint doing it no more.”
“Don't you fucking dare to walk away now, Kai Hiwatari!” Tala shouted at him. “You fucking bitch! Come back here! I'm not finished with you!”
The door slammed shut behind the phoenix, leaving the room silent. The wolf made an attempt to get loose and follow him, but was held back by all three remaining Russians. He was growling curses that made even his hard-bitten friends go pale. Tala and Kai's relationship had always been stormy, and they had a tendency to get into arguments at least a few times a week. It had been going on like that for the whole four years they'd been together. Tala was extremely jealous and controlling. And Kai was the very incarnation of independence. Every once in a while, they would just completely erupt and get in real physical fights – lingering effects of their Abbey life. But between the arguments, they were the cutest couple. They really loved each other, there was not a single doubt about that. But they also managed to set each other off a little too often. Usually they would just scream at each other for a while, and then make up again when one of the others managed to mediate. Kai had never before walked away from it. Because he was Kai. He never walked away from anything, no matter what the consequences. But now he was gone. His last words had sounded very final.
“Tala, calm the fuck down!” Bryan growled. “Let him go. He needs some time.”
“That little cheating slut better not come back tonight!” the wolf declared. “I'll kill him. I'll fucking kill him!”
“Oh, shut up, you jealous bitch,” Ian snarled. “Kai has never cheated on you, and you know it. The fuck is your problem?”
They managed to calm the raging wolf down, and planted him in the couch. Spencer sat down on one side and Bryan on the other. They forced him to stay put, and not rush out and make matters worse. They sat like that until the wolf eventually fell asleep. Then they carried him to his bedroom, and Spencer sat down in a chair next to the bed. They knew that Tala was a master at faking being asleep, and Spencer was the strongest one out of them. He could keep the redhead down until the others could come and knock him out. Bryan and Ian went out into the kitchen to try and get a hold of the runaway phoenix.

Kai walked determinately through the pouring rain and dark night. He needed to get away from it. Tala was smothering him, he had felt it more and more during the last three months. And the fact that he had went as far as to spy on him was just sickening. He touched the simple gold band around his left ring finger, and with a growl he pulled it off and looked at the inscription on the inside. 'From here to eternity. T.I K.H'. He remembered the day Tala had put it there. They had been on vacation to the wonderful city of Paris, and at the top of the Eiffel Tower the wolf had pulled the little box out and, in a totally un-Tala like way, actually got down on one knee to ask the Question. That had been one of the happiest days of his life, one he would never forget. But now, the ring felt like a chain around his neck. It was like he had, by accepting the ring, become some sort of possession. But he needed space, he needed his freedom. Tala should know that, cause he had always been that way. He would never give his freedom up, not for anything. And it was that, that caused so much problems. Because Tala had gotten this hang-up that he was cheating on him, because he didn't always want the wolf to follow him when he went out. But Kai was a one man's guy, and the idea of being unfaithful never even crossed his mind. He never even looked at other men, cause his heart and body burned for Tala, and Tala alone. His cellphone began to ring, and he checked the caller ID to make sure that it wasn't the wolf. He had nothing more to say to the redhead ex-fiance of his. Thankfully it said 'Bry-boy'. He answered it with his signature line.
“Hn?”
/Where are you?/ the falcon's worried voice reached him from the other end.
“On my way to where ever I can be left alone by that fucking idiot I just broke up with.”
/What? Come on, Kai. You've had these fights before. He doesn't mean it. He's a bit pissed, but he'll get over it. You know that./
“Sorry Bry, but I've had it. I can't do it anymore. I can't fucking breathe anymore. I'll call you when I've found a place to stay, and you can come with my things. I'm not coming back.” Tears were running down his pale and no longer painted cheeks. “Tala and I are through.”
It was quiet on the other end of the line for a moment, before Bryan's voice came back.
/Ok, Kai. We'll tell him that. Just take care of yourself for now, ok? And don't do anything stupid./
“The stupidest thing I might to do right now is to get really fucking drunk. Don't worry. I can take care of myself. I always have. Do svi danye, Bryan.”
/Do svi danye, Kai./
They hung up, and Kai searched his contact list for a specific number and made a new call. He walked on as the signals screeched in his ear. Finally someone picked it up.
“Hey, Mr. D,” he said. “I'm coming back to Tokyo. Can you help me find a place to crash?”

Tala woke up the next morning, and felt a stinging pain on his jaw. He looked around the room and found Spencer sitting on the chair next to the bed. The door opened and Bryan and Ian stepped into the room as well. They looked dead serious. He sat up and arched a red brow in question.
“What's up, you guys?” he asked.
Bryan looked at him, eyes glowing with anger.
“You've really done it this time, you son of a bitch,” he growled.
“What're you talking about, Bry?”
“This,” the falcon said and tossed a small object to him. Tala caught it, and his heart dropped when he saw just what it was. Kai's engagement ring. Ian looked at him too.
“We gave him his stuff while you were asleep. He's not coming back. And he doesn't wanna see you again.”
“Your engagement is off,” the falcon clarified.
Tala moved the gold band around in his hand, tears rising in his eyes.
“Where is he?” he asked in a shaky voice.
“We promised not to tell you.”
“Is he with that mangy cat?” Tala was suddenly angry.
“No. He's not even in this country.”
“Say fucking what?”
“Your ex is a millionaire. You really think that leaving here is any problem to him?”
“My... ex. Oh God. Kai...” He burst into tears, and clutched the ring tight and held it to his chest. The others made no attempts to comfort him. They were actually fighting back the urge to cause serious physical damage to the redhead.

Kai stepped through the doors of the BBA ,and was greeted by Mr. Dickinson. The elderly man had not changed much during the last two years since Kai saw him. He had a few more wrinkles, and seemed a little rounder in shape, but other than that it was the same old man. He took the bluenette's hand and shook it enthusiastically.
“Ah, Kai, my boy!” he smiled. “How wonderful to see you again! Is Tala coming too?”
A look of pain flickered across the former champion's face, and the portly face became concerned.
“No, Mr. D,” Kai forced himself to say casually. “We broke up.”
A chubby hand landed on his shoulder and he saw the compassion in the man's eyes.
“I'm so sorry, my lad,” he said. “When did that happen?”
“Oh, dear.” he signed for the retired blader to follow him, and they walked up to his office. After they had sat down on opposite sides of the desk, Mr. D looked at him again. “Lucky enough, your old apartment is vacant at the moment, and I managed to rent it in your name. It's fully furnished, and everything should be ready to use.”
“Thank you,” Kai said simply.
“Now, tell me,” the elderly man said. “What happened? You two loved each other so much. Nothing in the world could break you apart.” He saw tears forming in the young man's eyes, not a sight one would see very often. This was apparently very serious.
“Tala is really jealous,” he said. “And he even went as far as spying on me, to try and catch me cheating on him. He was obsessed with the idea of it. And I have not once done something like that to him. I would never do it! But he refused to listen, and we fought about it all the time. And 43 hours ago we had a fight of astronomical proportions. I hit him, he hit me. And we just screamed at each other. The other guys had to grab us so we didn't kill each other. He accused me of cheating on him with Rei. Lee died last Tuesday, as I think you already know.”
Mr. Dickinson nodded.
“And when Rei got the news, he was devastated. He called me, and I could hardly hear what he said cause he was crying so hard. I went over there and did my best to comfort him. He was almost hysterical, and I had to hold him like a child to make him calm down. But to Tala, who had apparently followed me cause of his stupid hang-up, it looked like something else. And I've never been attracted to Rei. He's like a little brother to me. I love him, yes, but not that way. But when I got home, Tala went straight at my throat. I think 'slut' was the nicest thing he called me. And things just went downhill from there. So I just walked out on him. Bry and Ian came to the airport with my bag, and I gave my ring to them so that they could give it to Tala.” He wiped away the tears that was wetting his pale cheeks. “It's over. I don't want to see him again.”
“My dear boy,” Mr. Dickinson sighed. “Life has not treated you very well. I thought Tala would be your happy ending. He was so in love with you. How could it go that wrong?”
“I don't know.” Kai pulled himself together, but didn't manage the distant look he always had. “It just did. And now here I am. The question is what I'm going to do now.”
“You used to be a talented painter, if I recall correctly,” the portly man said thoughtfully. “Have you kept it up?”
“Yes, I have. It's what I do all day now, when I'm not doing business.”
“The Keniwa high school is looking for a new arts teacher. Maybe we could try to get you in there.”
“Keniwa high school?” Kai asked.
“Oh, right, you don't know it. It opened up just last year. Their arts teacher had to quit because of cancer. It's just a half time employment, but I guess money is not really an issue for you nowadays either?”
“No, it's not. I'm happy as long as I can do something meaningful during the days. And a half time is all I really need. I'm still the owner of my corporation, and business claims a lot of my time. But I don't have any of my paintings with me. They're all back in Hong Kong. And some of them are even back in my house in Moscow.”
“Ah, but you left a fair amount of art here, my boy. After you came back from the Academy of modern arts. I do believe that to be sufficient. You had a great talent.”
“It's worth a shot.”
xXx xXx xXx
“Kids, meet your new arts teacher,” the gray-haired Einstein look-a-like that was the headmaster of Keniwa high said and pointed to Kai. “This is Kai Hiwatari, and he will be in charge of all things creative around here now.”
The twenty students that were supposed to be his art students just stared at him. He didn't wear his old clothes anymore. He wore ragged jeans and shirts or casual tank tops nowadays, and he had stopped painting his face three years ago. But his hair was still the same as it had always been and he was still very recognizable as the famous beyblader he had been throughout his life, up til his twentieth birthday.
“Headmaster,” a boy said. “Are you serious?”
“Of course I am. Kai has a very good education in the fine arts. He's a graduate from Academy of modern arts, you know.”
They went back to staring at him. Kai sighed inwardly.
(Holy fuck. What have I gotten myself in to? They stare at me like an alien or something.)
He looked at his class and decided to start the lesson before they stared holes through him.
“Alright,” he said. “Yes, I am Kai from the Bladebreakers. But I'm also your teacher, so you will do as I say. I will have no disrespecting of either me or each other in this classroom. I will grade you based on your techniques and your understanding of the different areas we're going to go through. Attendance will make up for twenty percent of your final grade. I will not judge your artwork in any other way. Every person sketches and paint different things, from different views. So it's not fair to put down one student's work or say that another is better from a pure motif based point of view.” He put his hand on a stack of sketch pads. “We will start by sketching in graphite. Everyone take one of these. Today you can draw what you want, so I can see your individual styles. Then we'll go from there.”
They rushed to get a pad and a pen each and sat down in their chairs again. Within five minutes, most of them were busy with their first artworks. The headmaster looked at his newest teacher.
“I think you'll be perfect here,” he said. “Our students are often a bit unruly, and you're the first teacher they actually obeyed from the start.”
Kai gave a slight smile.
“Let's hope they keep it up. But after training Tyson everyday for six years of my life, I'm ready for anything.”
xXx xXx xXx
Kai sat down on the window seat of his small five story apartment, sipping a glass of amber colored whiskey. The sun was setting over Tokyo, tinting the sky in vibrant shades of red and gold. He had forgot how beautiful the sunsets were here, and especially from this window. He had loved this apartment, and remembered the day he had moved in. Tired of living in Tyson's house, he had looked around until he found this place. He was the oldest member of the team, and no one was really surprised when he decided to 'leave the nest'. He had been seventeen then. The house warming party had been great, though totally unplanned. Back then, Tala was still his unattainable love and best friend. It was only three years later, a few months after the Bladebreakers had officially retired, that he had learned about the wolf's feelings for him. That night he had lost his boy/boy virginity, and given away his heart to the one person in the world who understood him completely. Within a year he was living in Moscow half the time, and in Hong Kong the rest of it, together with his life long friends and beloved boyfriend. It seemed so long ago now, all of it. Almost like another lifetime. The team was scattered all over the world, living life and pursuing different careers. Rei and him were the only ones that still hung out together. He missed the blading. Though he still took Dranzer for a spin every now and then, it just wasn't the same.
The past week he had spent getting re-familiarized with the vast city of Tokyo and buying the things he didn't have in his home when he moved in. People still recognized him wherever he went, and a part of him liked it. It made him feel like his old self again. Kai Hiwatari, the talented blader, always striving for perfection, and captain of the four times world champion team. Not the tired and worn out business man and painter, that struggled to keep sane in his relationship with the man he had loved all his life. The man he was now. He felt so old, too old for his 23 years.
He looked at an object lying at the opposite end of the seat, and frowned. He had not been at all pleased when he unpacked his things and found it at the bottom of the bag. The object was a photo album, documenting his and Tala's life since they had become lovers. Scribbled in Tala's smooth handwriting over the black cover was the same sentence as on the inside of their rings. 'From here to eternity'. He took it up, against his own better knowledge, and opened it to a random page. The picture his eyes found first was one from the holiday in Rome they'd had a year and a half ago. It was Bryan that had taken it, and it showed him and Tala looking at the sunset together. The wolf stood behind him with his arms around his waist and his cheek resting against Kai's head. Kai held his arms. They had both looked so at peace. The warmth and love oozed from the photo, and he felt tears rising fast in his eyes. A week after that, Tala had asked him for his hand.
He picked a new page at random. Tala and him blading against each other at the Moscow mansion, smiling and eyes burning. Dranzer and Wolborg filled up the background. It was a magnificent photo. Next page. Tala walking down a street, with his hand locked in Kai's. Smiling his mischievous smile. Next page. Tala sleeping against his chest in the couch, most likely in the middle of a horror movie. The wolf always fell asleep in the middle of the really good movies, and had to re-watch them the day after. Next page. The result of an all out food fight, involving all five Russian men. Kai had just smacked a raw egg in Tala's forehead, and was grinning victoriously. In the background, Bryan threw a hand full of flour in Ian's face. Next page. One of Tala's favorite pictures. Kai was sitting at a window seat, like he always did if he had the opportunity. The sun was setting over Moscow, and the red golden glow reflected in the crimson eyes directed at the camera. His look was serious as always, but if one looked closely one could see that a smile was finding it's way on to the thin lips, and the eyes glittered in amusement behind the 'bugger off, you're bothering me'-look he usually kept up. Next page. Tala kicking Ian's ass in some random video-game he couldn't recall the name of. The wolf grinned, blue eyes sparkling. The serpent blader next to him looked like he was having a heart attack or something. Next page. Kai standing in front of the easel in his little art-studio at the Hong Kong house. There was some green paint on his cheek, and his clothes were stained in all the colors of the rainbow. He looked very hard-set, which indicated that he was caught in a creative flow and didn't want to be disturbed. Next page. Tala's sleeping face in the morning light. The wolf looked so soft and boyish when he slept. It made Kai's heart hurt like someone just stabbed him right through it. He slammed the album shut and threw it across the room, before he started sobbing and hid his face in his hands.
