A/N: Yeah…I didn’t have the location where Vegeta and Kakarot were from in the beginning…mainly because I didn’t know where to put them until I was like, Russia…why not? …and until the mention of locations was important anyway…I thought it’d be good to put that in there. Also, it might be a while yet until Kakarot and Vegeta get together…I want the character development to be as flawless as possible. Perhaps that’s why I have it in all my stories. Not only is it essential to the plot, but…I just want to…get it right. :)
(…) – Author’s thoughts
A wild rabbit grazed on the snow covered grasses that were barely seen beneath it as its eyes kept a look out on either side of it, only blinking when it had to. Once the little patch of green was gone, it lightly hopped to another spot next to it. It continued munching then suddenly stopped when it heard a stick break nearby. Its ears perked up and didn’t move nor make a sound as it turned its head and ears around its large environment to make out whatever it was. When nothing happened, it gradually went back to grazing. What it didn’t notice was the shadowed eyes that were filled with determination as they stared down its prey. However, another rustled sound made the bunny stop and look towards the eyes. As soon as the bunny knew it was there, the wolf came out of its hiding place and chased the rabbit as it took off into the shrubbery.The large wolf snapped its jaws as it tried to catch the bunny with its long teeth. However, the bunny was too fast and made zig-zag patterns in the tall, wilted grass then went into a hole in the ground. The wolf stopped at the hole and barked and growled into it, hoping to scare the critter out. When that didn’t work, it dug its paws into the hole, trying to dig it out. However, the wolf gave up and sniffed at the hole then left. It panted as it trudged onward to find some more food, but then stopped to look up at the darkening sky and noticed that the full moon would come out soon. With that in mind, the cub raced back towards its temporary home to its companion.
When Kakarot returned, he noticed Vegeta hadn’t moved from his spot all day. Kakarot’s gaze softened and hung his head slightly as he made his way towards Vegeta. The half breed still lay on the makeshift pile of pillows and appeared to be sleeping, the blood loss and the excitement of the morning being too much for him. Perhaps that’ll slow him down tonight. Kakarot lied next to the prince and rested his head within reaching distance. Vegeta woke up when he did so and looked towards the cub when his stomach growled. “Did you find any food?” He asked tiredly. Kakarot let out a breath along with a soft whimper. Vegeta’s gaze softened at that. “It’s okay. I didn’t expect you to get it the first time. I’ll teach you as soon as this is over, alright?” Kakarot didn’t make any indication that he understood and just lied still. Vegeta noted the action but didn’t voice it. “Why haven’t you changed back yet?” When he still didn’t get an answer, he slowly reached out and pet Kakarot’s head and rubbed his ears in a comforting gesture. “Is it because of your brother?” When he got a whine in response, he moved his hand to the other’s nose and lightly raked his nails through the fur. Kakarot closed his eyes at the other’s touches and didn’t make a sound.
After a moment, the cub opened them halfway to stare at his companion. He couldn’t do it. He couldn’t protect him and he couldn’t find any food for him. What use was he? He was the strongest of his kind! …and he couldn’t even kill a rabbit for the only one he cared about in this world…that he trusted. He sighed again. He was utterly useless. However, it wasn’t the reason why he wasn’t shifting back, it was because he knew Vegeta would ask him what his brother said to him…and he knew he’d tell him too. Vegeta’s mother…was killed because of him. He started the war. If he hadn’t been born…then…his father wouldn’t have been hurt and he wouldn’t have killed the human queen. It sounded foolish putting it that way, but…it was the only thing that made sense.
A solemn puppy dog look overcame his features. His father…was still hurting. He kept up with the war because the only room in his heart now is hatred and sadness. Kakarot knows that, in a way, his father hated him. The only reason he even showed his love to him was because he was stronger…because he’s nothing like any werewolf out there. His father believes that his youngest can avenge his pain for him…but how, when he was the one who caused it? Perhaps…he can end it. Maybe being away from his father will help with the anguish that is storming inside him and his head will clear. Kakarot sighed again. He doubted it.
A mangled moan brought him out of his thoughts as he lifted his head to stare at Vegeta. The half breed curled in on himself as he tried keeping the excruciating agony from surfacing. Kakarot stood and whined a bit before nudging his nose against the tense body below. “K-Kakarot…it’s…s-starting.” Kakarot whined nervously and in slight fear as he took Vegeta’s collar in between his teeth and lifted him from his comfortable place and rushed him outside so the moon could do the rest.
Once they were a good distance away from the crumbling castle, Kakarot set the half breed down and lied down next to him again. The prince groaned in pain as he tried holding it all in, but a nudge to his head made him think otherwise as he turned to look at the cursed orb in the sky. “N-No…” Kakarot whined in response and made sure he kept looking at the moon. Ever so slowly, the pain increased and the sobbing and screams gradually voiced themselves in the night. Kakarot watched helplessly and solemnly as the other prince gradually shifted into the beast within. “KAKAROT!” Vegeta suddenly began to call for him, as if he could save him from his pain. However, all Kakarot could do was be there for him.
The cub lifted his massive paw and patted the writhing half breed lightly with it, as if telling him not to fight it and let it happen. However, Vegeta was having troubles translating that as he continued to scream. Blood and tears leaked out of the halfling, which caused Kakarot to become greatly worried again. The cub stood and paced around his companion, whining the whole time. Fortunately, he didn’t have to wait too much longer as the shifting of Vegeta’s skeletal structure began and seemed to be accelerated a little more. He was a wolf cub in no time. Vegeta laid there in exhaustion and pain as he got used to the transformation and the agony subsided.
Kakarot stood over his companion and sniffed along him, making sure he was okay. The halfling cub lifted his head at Kakarot’s actions and sniffed him as well. They both touched noses slightly and cautiously sniffed each other to see if either one was safe to be around. Vegeta pulled back and Kakarot just stopped, waiting for the other’s next reaction. Kakarot sighed when he saw Vegeta turn his head towards a critter scurrying across the white floor and immediately got up to chase it. Of course he was going to get food. If he’s lucky, then maybe Vegeta will run into a herd of deer and share them with him.
Kakarot followed the half breed cub every step of the way, making sure he didn’t head toward a village and make a meal out of the innocent folk. Although, they’d be lucky if they did, since they had no idea where they were.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, Kakarot gradually woke to the cold wind that swept past him. He yawned greatly, letting out a sound of his exhaustion. He looked around himself to see where he was, only to notice Vegeta lying underneath him. Kakarot looked to the half breed in slight confusion before it all came back to him. Oh right. Vegeta went off to find food and ate to his fill until the moon set. When he transformed back to his human form, he was out. So Kakarot decided to keep him warm for the night by staying in his wolf form and lying on top of him…like so. The cub sniffed Vegeta to see if he was still breathing. He let out a sigh when he noticed he was then proceeded to wake him by nudging his head.
Vegeta protested at first to being woken up, but opened his eyes nonetheless. When he did so, Kakarot got off of him and waited for him to stand. Vegeta sat up only to wince at the soreness in his body from transforming. He stood and popped his back then stretched out his aching muscles. He grunted at the effort then stopped once he noticed Kakarot standing in front of him, still in his wolf form. They locked eyes for a moment before Vegeta shivered when the wind blew past him. He hugged himself to keep warm then looked around them. “Where are we?”
Of course, Kakarot couldn’t answer, so he went to Vegeta’s side and bent down low enough so he may get on him. Vegeta sneered slightly at the silent gesture, but quickly decided to get on when he shivered from the cold again. The cub carefully stood then started sniffing around for their tracks. When he found them, he quickly took off and followed them. Again, a shiver wracked Vegeta’s frame. Trying to think of a way to warm himself, he laid himself on Kakarot’s back and held on to his fur. It took them half a day to get back to the falling castle and as soon as they did, Vegeta immediately went in to find some clothes. Kakarot waited outside for him, hoping to go with him to find some food. When he came back out, Vegeta had his sword and blade adorned, along with his gloves and winter clothes. He gave Kakarot a serious but worried look. “Kakarot, did I…did I…hurt anyone last night?” His breathing sped up as he eagerly waited for an answer. Kakarot noted how worried the other prince was and quickly shook his head. Vegeta let out a calming breath. “Good. Now come on. I might as well teach you something about hunting. I’m actually surprised your brother or your father hasn’t taught you yet.” He began walking in a direction and Kakarot hesitated, but followed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After walking in the crisp snow for a while, Vegeta stopped when he heard something. Kakarot stopped as well and waited. “Kakarot, do you smell anything?” Vegeta turned his head slightly towards the cub when Kakarot sniffed the air. He seemed to catch something to the right of them when the cub turned his head in that direction.
Vegeta followed the other’s nose and slowly got out his knife as he carefully and quietly walked in that direction. Kakarot followed the other’s lead until they came upon a lone deer grazing by a tree. They hid behind a few snow covered bushes to hide themselves then Vegeta proceeded to tell Kakarot what to do. “Alright. Here’s the plan. I’ll sneak around on the other side of it then spook it so that way it’ll come your way. That’s when you surprise it and jump out and strike. Just aim for the neck and bring it down. Try to break it if you can. Do you think you can do that?” He whispered. Kakarot gave Vegeta a panicked gaze, realization suddenly hitting him in how real this all was. He thought about it for a little bit, but before he could answer, Vegeta spoke. “Either you can do it or you can’t Kakarot. It’s as easy as that. However, you’ll never know if you can, if you never try. If you don’t catch this one, then don’t worry about it. We can always find another.” He looked at the cub until he got a nod then proceeded to do what he planned.
Kakarot’s heart was beating rapidly. It was just like last time with Raditz. He was confident that he could do it, until the moment finally happened and he chickened out. He was uncertain and having second thoughts about this, but like what Vegeta said. If he doesn’t try it, then he’ll never learn. Kakarot suddenly got sharp when he saw the deer’s head perk up at a sound. The cub tensed as he waited for it then jumped slightly, startled, when the deer suddenly darted his way. His legs shook slightly and his breathing sped up. It’s coming this way. Stay focused. It’s coming! Closer…closer…oh no he couldn’t do it! Kakarot looked down at the ground, staying hidden behind the bushes as the deer jumped over him, letting it get away. The cub stayed that way until he heard footsteps come towards him, then he stepped out and faced the half breed. Vegeta seemed a little annoyed, but not angry. At least, he didn’t show it. He put his hands on his hips as he thought. “Hm. Looks like we’ll have to come at this from a different approach.” He looked around them then back to Kakarot. “Can you sniff out another?” Kakarot nodded solemnly then went off in another direction until he found a scent.
The cub’s head hung the whole time, ashamed himself for not having the courage to get food for them. He just…froze. Will he ever overcome this or will he be doomed to rely on others? He sighed in disappointment. Perhaps there is another way like Vegeta said. He stopped when he picked up a scent and realized it was straight ahead a little ways. Vegeta followed until they came upon…a bear. Kakarot took a couple steps back at the large creature, however, Vegeta stood his ground, but grabbed a hold of Kakarot’s fur to keep him in place. “Bears are a little more tricky. They don’t scare easily and charge you if you’re a threat. The best way to take them down is by surprise and no hesitation. I suggest that you stay hidden and leave this one to me. Just watch and learn.” Vegeta whispered in his ear then quietly made his way around to find the best point of attack.
Kakarot didn’t pay attention to Vegeta. Instead, he kept his gaze on the bear. If what the half breed said was true, then he should be more concerned about not being seen. The bear just seemed to be scuffling around and sniffing here and there. Probably searching for food. When it looked like the bear was about to walk away, a stick fell from a tree above it and landed in front of it. It sniffed around the twig, wondering what the movement was in front of it. Then it looked up when it heard a sound, only to see Vegeta pounce on it. The bear roared and began running around, trying to get him off. However, Vegeta swiftly stabbed it in the neck before it could get too far. The bear slowed down but it didn’t stop moving. So Vegeta brought the knife across its neck and slit its throat open, thus causing it to hit the ground. The bear’s roars weakened to grunts and groans and struggles then died. Vegeta got off the bear and wiped off his knife then looked to Kakarot and smirked. “Do you mind carrying this? I’d do it myself but then it’d be dark by the time we return.”
Kakarot gulped then slowly trudged towards them. He stopped just before the bear and cautiously sniffed it. Vegeta grabbed the bear and dragged it over to Kakarot. However, the cub took a couple steps back in alarm. Vegeta paused in his advance, “Oh come on. Don’t be such a baby. It’s dead.” He continued his advance then slung it onto the cub’s back. Kakarot whimpered when the heavy creature landed on him, which also caused his legs to give slightly, but caught himself. He straightened himself with effort and concentrated on not collapsing under the beast’s weight. He cringed when he felt the bear’s blood leak out and trail down his fur and drip on the white floor. Vegeta watched the cub in amusement. “Is it too heavy?” After a moment of contemplating, Kakarot shook his head. Heavy or not, he knew he had to carry it anyway. Might as well have some dignity and ‘bear’ with it (*snigger*). Vegeta tilted his head at him slightly. “This’ll be good for you. It’ll build up your strength the more you do this. Now if only we got a proper meal every day, then you’d be stronger.” He muttered the last part to himself as he started heading back to their humble abode.
Kakarot just sighed and trudged behind the other with his heavy burden. Why couldn’t he be more like Vegeta? He was brave, courageous, strong, intelligent, except it all came with a price. The cub suddenly tripped when he came across a log, but quickly caught himself before he hit the ground. Vegeta turned to him to see if he was okay, only to smirk and continue on. Kakarot stood back on his paws and adjusted the load by tipping his head back. He set determined eyes on the prince in front of him and trudged on.

A few days later…
Kakarot still hadn’t changed back into his human form…not once. However, Vegeta was beyond caring as he dragged himself behind. The cub had to keep stopping and waiting for him to catch up and he was walking as slow as he could. Kakarot was worried. Vegeta’s been exhausted for the last couple days and he had no idea why. Could it be from the blood loss or lack of food or sleep? Perhaps it was a combination of the three? As soon as the full lunar cycle was over, they agreed to find a village and eat their fill and stay the night. After all, they had plenty of money. They just needed to wear disguises. Kakarot had to stop again once he noticed Vegeta was no longer at his side. He looked behind him to see the half breed resting his hands on his knees and trying hard to stay conscious. The cub trotted over to him and bent down low enough to present his back to him, a silent gesture for him to get on him. However, Vegeta refused him by weakly pushing him away. “I don’t need your help.” He panted.
Kakarot whimpered lightly in a form of argument, but Vegeta wasn’t listening. An hour later, they finally came upon a village. Kakarot trotted to the village’s edge, only to find it completely empty. Not only was it empty, it was destroyed. Bodies were strewn about and buildings and homes were demolished. The cub stood there in shock until Vegeta finally caught up to him and leaned against him, resting. “Well? Are we going to-?” He cut himself off when he noticed the scenery before him then groaned in disappointment. “Damn it! We finally find a village and there’s no one here!” He rested against the cub for a moment longer before forcing himself to stand and walk toward the destruction. “Well, we might as well find what we can.” He made his way to and fro between the buildings that were still standing and the ones that didn’t seem so damaged, picking certain things up as he went along.
Kakarot didn’t know how he felt about this. Just what happened here? Whatever it was, it was strong enough and big enough to destroy everything around it. Could it be…? Could it have been…? No…the cub carefully made his way in the village until he came across a body that looked to have claw marks on it. He sniffed it to see if he recognized the scent and took a couple steps back when he did. No…it was them. They’re looking for him. He looked up to see Vegeta stumbling out of a building while munching on something apparently edible. “Hey, Kakarot! Look what I found for ya!” He held up what looked like a bow. Kakarot trotted over to him and sniffed the object. “Maybe this will help you hunt. If not to kill, then maybe create a distraction or wound the animal or something. Either way, I think it’ll be of some use to you.” He held it out to the cub, who sniffed it then nodded. Vegeta hooked it onto the bag on his back then took a bite out of his found food. “Look, I also found some food. There’s a pub right there. Go ahead and find what you want.” He took another bite.
However, Kakarot wasn’t hungry. What he really wanted to do was get out of there. With Vegeta in his weakened state, they could be attacked at any moment and it would be up to him to protect him. Vegeta noticed Kakarot’s paranoid state and he took it for the wrong thing, but not completely. “What’s wrong? Never seen a dead body before, have you?”
Kakarot made a gruff whine before it turned into a pathetic whimpering. He beat his paws against the ground a couple times as a sign for them to leave. Vegeta eyed him. “What’s wrong with you? If you have something to say, then transform and tell me.” The cub decided to bark his words instead, but it fell on confused ears. “I don’t speak your language, mutt. What’s the matter with you all of a sudden, huh?” In his efforts to calm the cub down, Vegeta didn’t notice something off in the air, until now. He looked about them as he suddenly felt a shift in the atmosphere, like someone was watching them. He looked back to the still whimpering cub and immediately silenced him. “Quiet. There’s someone here, isn’t there?” Kakarot nodded enthusiastically and looked towards a small building that was partly demolished.
Vegeta followed the other’s gaze and noticed someone coming out. He stood next to Kakarot in case the man was a threat, which apparently he was if Kakarot was growling at him…and if he had blood all over, especially around the mouth, with a deranged smile on his face. The man stopped when he saw the new visitors then his smile turned into a grin. “Why, if it isn’t the human prince…and a cub.” He studied Kakarot for a moment before it finally hit him. “Kakarot! That must be you!” The man took a few steps closer, which caused the both of them to take a few steps back, but the man didn’t notice. “We’ve been looking all over for you! Please, come back with us, your father and brother miss you terribly, as do we all.” He gestured to the other men that were appearing out of other buildings and came to stand on either side of them, surrounding them.
The two royals looked around nervously but kept their attention on the man in front of them. Kakarot whined in distress. He should’ve seen this coming. Why didn’t they just keep moving? Right. Vegeta needed food, but he should’ve smelled them. Damn it, there’s too much blood in the air! “Come my prince. Come back home with us.” The man opened his arms wide in a welcoming gesture, but Kakarot wasn’t buying it and shook his head in response and slowly backed away. The man’s upbeat attitude suddenly died. “Please, your highness. I would hate to do this the hard way.” Kakarot looked between the man and Vegeta, then to all the weres surrounding them. He suddenly made a quick decision by grabbing Vegeta by the collar of his coat and getting the hell out of there. Vegeta yelped at the quick action and began shouting at his displeasure. The man in front of them suddenly turned into a two-legged wolf and blocked their path. Kakarot slid to a stop and quickly dodged the man by jumping over a demolished building and running for their lives.
The man that turned roared for his comrades to go after them. All the men there transformed into two-legged wolves simultaneously and ran after their prince. Just when Kakarot thought he was a good enough distance away from them, he looked behind him only to notice them gaining up on him. Some of them split off and jumped in the trees in hopes of pouncing on him. “Don’t look back! Keep running!” Vegeta shouted at the cub.
Kakarot turned his attention to the prince he was holding. He’s right. He can’t let them catch him. If they do, they’ll surely kill Vegeta and he didn’t want to go back to a family that’s a part of the war. Kakarot found the strength inside him and pushed onward at a faster pace. Now, the only problem was, how was he going to get rid of them? He couldn’t outrun them forever and he was quickly starting to get tired. Vegeta looked above them and behind as best as he could then quickly realized that they were about to be attacked. The half breed began to climb from the cub’s mouth and onto his back. “Keep going! Try to lose them! I’ll protect you for as long as I can!” He shouted through the rush of air going past them. Kakarot immediately began to panic, just wondering what in the world Vegeta was planning.
The half breed managed to get on the cub’s back and sat on him backwards. He then pulled out his sword and knife then waited for an attack. He didn’t have to wait long when two of them pounced from above and headed straight for him. Vegeta quickly slashed at them, managing to slice one’s arm off and cut the other in the midsection. Both wolves howled and backed off. Kakarot zig-zagged through some trees then jumped into a dried creek. More wolves leaped from above, thinking they had them cornered, when it only gave them an advantage. Two wolves misaimed themselves, one of them slammed into a tree and the other landed on the ground next to them. Kakarot would’ve dodged if the wolf was aiming for him, instead, it took a swipe at Vegeta. The half breed leaped onto his feet to avoid the dodge and quickly cut the wolf’s hand in half. The wolf howled in pain as the others quickly passed him to achieve their mission. Vegeta only managed to balance on the moving cub’s back for a moment longer until he lost it and quickly sat back down. Kakarot suddenly barked at Vegeta, who turned around to see what the problem when he saw a few fallen logs were coming at them. Vegeta quickly lied down on his back to avoid getting hit in the face. The wolves from behind and above kept an eye on them when they went under more logs, only to lose them when they went to the next one. They suddenly halted their advance and barked questions at each other. A couple of them went around breaking the logs to see if they were hiding, but they disappeared. More barks, then they split up. Some went searching and others stayed in the dried creek.
When their search turned empty, they came up with another strategy and continued onwards, wondering if they kept going and they just missed them. Little did they know that Vegeta and Kakarot managed to find a little hiding hole last minute in the side of the creek. It was small enough for them to be unnoticed but managed to fit. Once they knew the pack moved on, they crawled out and managed to sneak away. Unfortunately, one of the wolves saw them flee and alerted the rest of the pack. They quickly turned heel and followed them. They ran until they came to a cliff with a raging waterfall beneath them. Kakarot stopped and took a couple steps back then tried to decide which way to go next, but they were surrounded. Kakarot began to pant from all the running he’s been doing as he backed away from the slowly advancing werewolves. He stopped though when his hind leg hit the edge of the cliff. Vegeta looked behind them and down. They had no choice. They had to do it. Vegeta hopped off the cub and stared at the wolves. Damn. If there weren’t so many, he’d take care of them himself, but knew he couldn’t risk it, especially in his weakened state. “Kakarot. We have to jump.” The cub didn’t take his eyes off the wolves but whimpered in response. “Come on!” Vegeta shouted, knowing it was their only chance. However, when Kakarot still wouldn’t budge, Vegeta rammed into him, causing him to stumble and fall over the edge, he quickly followed him. Just in time too, when a wolf tried to swipe at him. The pack watched helplessly as their prince and enemy disappeared in the raging waters below. A couple whines were made, but then orders were barked. The rest of the pack did what they were told and moved on, but one stayed to growl his frustration and stare into the watery abyss skeptically.

Ugh, I don’t know what I’m writing anymore. :/ I’m just…writing. I have no plan. Hopefully I’ll come up with one like I did in the All There Is But Never Will Be story. I’m sure I will…eventually. Man, I’m getting hardcore with the cliffhangers. I need to stop doing that. >.>
Oh and Happy Halloween! :D
