Konekas Excellent Vacation, Part 12
Cell Games: The Lookout 2
Dende was kind enough to give me and Jimmy a room. And a feast. AND a place to bathe. So we ate and washed, and then I tucked Jimmy in with a kiss.
Koneka, is my mom and grandma coming back soon?
His eyelids were drooping, heavy with sleep.
Dende said they have to gather the dragonballs and then, yes, theyll be back after that.
Dragonballs? He yawned so wide I could practically see his tonsils.
Do you trust me, Jimmy?
Uh-huh.
Trust me. Theyll be back.
Ohhh...k... He was asleep in a heartbeat.
Poor little kid, I whispered, kissing my finger and touching his cheek. I watched the slow, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest, the long lashes lying on his cheeks, and I wondered what it would be like to have a child of my own. Vejitas child. Sweet dreams, Jimmy.
I stood up and wandered out to the lookout. It was dark and no one was around. I guess even the guardian of the Earth has to sleep sometimes. Bulma and baby Trunks had left. She offered to give us a room and plenty of toys for Jimmy, but I felt safer right here. Besides...
I looked up at the stars and imagined what it would have been like if I had been born a Saiyan on Planet Vejita. Who was I kidding? I wouldnt have had a chance with the prince, anyway. I guess I could say I was better off just being me, then.
As I watched, suddenly what looked like a meteor shower lit the sky like the fourth of July! It was an awesome sight! I almost wanted to wake up Jimmy, but then he might have trouble getting back to sleep. I watched it go on for about ten minutes, then, just as quickly as it had begun, it ended. The night went on as before, quiet and dark. I stood at the edge of the lookout and peered over the edge into the black clouds trying to feel the people. I wished Vejita had taught me how to do that. Maybe I just had to learn it on my own. Everything has energy, he said...
I sank to the floor Indian-style, closed my eyes and turned inside out. Well, not literally! I took a deep breath. Belly breaths...
Focus... focus... quiet...
The pulse was weak, but I felt it. Jimmys. I dont know how I knew it was him, but I knew. It had the same feel, the same... smell... as Jimmy.
I abandoned his energy and went looking for more. Whose was that? Dende. It felt green!
I was getting the hang of this. There was Mr. Popos. Besides Trunks and Piccolo in the room of spirit and time, that left no one else on the lookout. It was time to put this to the acid test. I concentrated on the Earth below, but there was such a jumble of energy signals that I couldnt sort them out.
When I felt it, it literally knocked the breath out of me. For one frightening moment, I thought I was going to suffocate, but I managed a great shuddering gasp before I turned right side out again.
I sat holding my stomach, gasping. I leaned forward with my head over the edge of the lookout and vomited until my guts felt like they were falling out.
Cell.
The tears flowed down my cheeks unchecked. How could anyone defeat a monster like that? Not even the power Goku had demonstrated yesterday had felt like this. This energy Cells energy seemed like it could rip time itself. We were all doomed. I cried harder.
While the tears continued to flow, a powerful signal reached me. How quickly I had gone from not knowing how to sense energy, to feeling it automatically! I knew who it was before he landed.
I didnt get up. He sat next to me silently and looked out into the black sky. When I lifted my face to his, I knew I was a soggy mess. His mouth was set in a grim straight line, his black eyes held a mixture of sorrow and rage.
Please say you can defeat him. I whispered. I put my forehead against the hard muscle of his arm.
He will be defeated, he said. I didnt question his choice of words, but my heart felt like it was held in an ice-cold grip. I felt the muscles of his arm move and my head shifted as he put his arm around me. I cried some more, my tears soaking the front of his battle suit. I couldnt turn them off! My soul felt like it had been violated, and I knew Vejita understood that.
He waited until I had myself under control, then he tipped my head up with his fist and pressed his warm, firm lips against mine. As he kissed me, I felt the growing power and I shielded myself as he exploded into gold. He clutched me to him like I was his life preserver, and we lifted into the air, rolling slowly, our bodies pressed together.
And so it was, that while Jimmy slept soundly, while Trunks and Piccolo trained in the room of spirit and time, and while Cell waited out the last few days before the tournament, that Vejita and I made love, rolling and drifting lazily in the warmth of his power, lighting up the dark dark night sky.
