Vegeta gradually awoke by opening his bleary eyes. He couldn’t see anything for a moment as his eyes adjusted to the dim lit room. He continued to stare at the ceiling until it finally occurred to him that he was in a place that he’s never been in before. He turned his head to look at one side of the room then slowly moved it to see the other side. He looked down when he noticed someone by his side. It was a little girl. She stared at him with big blue eyes, but said nothing when she tilted her blonde head. Vegeta stared back with hazy, tired eyes, wondering who this girl was. Another moment of silence passed before the girl reached over by his head to grab a wet rag that was sitting in a bowl of cool water. Vegeta didn’t turn his exhausted gaze from the girl as she wrung out the rag and placed it on his forehead. She sat back in her chair and continued to watch him. Vegeta gritted his teeth as he struggled to move, but it proved to be too much of an effort, so he settled for talking. “Wh-o are y-ou?” His voice broke. His throat was so dry, he was surprised he made any sound at all.
The girl began kicking her feet as she sat in her chair. She tilted her head again before she spoke in a soft, shy voice. “Lydia.”
Vegeta coughed, trying to get his throat to work again. “Where’s…Kaka-?” He promptly passed out.
The little girl tilted her head in the other direction. “Kaka?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kakarot let out a shout of effort as he brought down the axe with enough force to split the log. The two pieces flew from their place on a tree stump, the axe imbedded into it. Kakarot stood from his position and brushed the hair out of his eyes. He let out a puff of air in his workout before going over to where his pile of logs were, only to see it was empty. He ruffled the back of his head and smiled, chuckling lightly. “I…guess I’m all done.” He went over to the axe still imbedded in the stump then pulled it out with ease and set it on the ground, leaning against the little wooden house.
He then opened the door to the house and ducked inside, the frame being too low for his head. He closed the door and kicked off his boots and coat, leaving them by the door. He was about to search for the man of the house, but stumbled upon the little girl, who was standing in front of him as if she were watching him the whole time. Kakarot took a step back in surprise at her appearance. “Wha! Oh, hello Lydia. You startled me.” He laughed nervously. She kind of gave him the creeps, but he sensed no evil from her, so he just assumed that she was odd. “Have you seen your father anywhere?”
Little Lydia tilted her blonde head at him. “He went to get supper.”
Kakarot stared perplexedly at the little girl. “Oh. Well, in that case, is there anything else I should take care of?”
Lydia shrugged. “I-oh-know.”
Kakarot raised a brow at her. “Okay.” He answered uncertainly before making his way into the three-roomed house.
Lydia titled her head the other way. “Kaka?”
Kakarot froze at the nickname and slowly turned, a look of confusion on his face. “What?”
“That’s what the dead man said.” She pointed at Vegeta’s unmoving body lying on one of the two beds just across the room. “He asked where you were.”
Kakarot followed the direction in which she pointed, even though he knew where Vegeta was anyway. He immediately ran to his side and checked for his pulse and breathing. “He woke up?” He paused to look at the girl. “And I told you before, Lydia, he’s not dead, just resting.” He turned his attention back to the half breed.
Lydia pulled another chair over next to Kakarot and sat in it to look at Vegeta’s pale complexion. “You sure? He looks dead to me and I’ve seen a dead body before.” She kicked her legs beneath her.
Kakarot removed the rag from Vegeta’s head to re-wet it then wrung it out and patted his face and chest with it. “Yes, I’m sure. He’s breathing.” He scowled at the girl’s questioning. What’s with her anyway? He pushed the blanket back that was lying on Vegeta to check his wounds. They were well enough that they didn’t need bandages, but Kakarot still wanted to check on them anyway. He hissed lightly when he saw that they’d leave some nasty scars, but he was glad that Vegeta will live. He was sure that Vegeta would be glad too. Even though he tried his hardest to heal him, the evidence of the bite marks will forever be imprinted on him. He pulled the blanket back over Vegeta’s torso and sadly stared at his relaxed face. “Did he say anything else?” He asked the little girl quietly.
Lydia tilted her head at Vegeta. “He asked who I was and looked around the room. I think he even tried to get up.”
Kakarot looked at her in slight surprise. “Did he manage to?”
Lydia shook her head. “Nope.”
Kakarot sighed as his shoulders slumped. He put his face in his hands, apparently disappointed in the news. He was still too weak to move. He must’ve lost more blood than he thought, but at this rate, Vegeta wasn’t going to get better until the full moon cycles through again. They’ve already been there for a week. They’ll have to leave before that. Why wasn’t Vegeta getting any better? No, he shouldn’t think that. At least he woke up today. That’s the first time that he’s regained consciousness since they’ve been there. That means that he’s getting better. Still…
“What did you say happened to him?” Lydia genuinely asked.
Kakarot lifted his head to stare at Vegeta’s calmly rising and falling chest. “A bear attacked him. We were out hunting and we ran into it.” He explained calmly, a story he revised in his mind many times.
“Oh.” Other than the fire crackling nearby in the fireplace, there was a deafened pause. “Where are you guys from?”
Kakarot stood from his seat, wanting nothing more than to get away from the girl’s questions. “Far away.” He answered in a monotone voice.
Lydia watched him walk away. “Aww, that’s the same thing you said last time!” The girl whined.
Just when Kakarot was about to put his boots and coat back on to leave, the door opened to reveal the girl’s father. Kakarot took a few steps back to let the burly man in. As soon as he closed the door, he shoved a few rabbits and some quail into Kakarot’s hesitant arms then proceeded to take off his hat and coat. “Papa! You’re back!” Lydia exclaimed as she went to greet her father.
“Hey there, sweetheart. Did these two behave themselves while I was gone?” The big man bent down to ruffle his daughter’s long hair.
Lydia nodded happily. “Mhm. The dead man even woke up today.” She pointed towards Vegeta again.
The man looked up from his daughter to the stranger lying on his bed in curiosity. “Did he now?” He stood then and stared at him for a moment longer before grabbing the rabbits that Kakarot still held and went to the area that served as the kitchen. “That’s good news. Shouldn’t be long now until your friend is better. He’ll wake up again soon.”
Kakarot turned to the man with hope in his eyes. “You think so?”
The man nodded as he grabbed his knife then paused when he looked at Kakarot. “Well? Those quail aren’t going to cook themselves.”
Kakarot looked down at the forgotten dead birds in his arms before coming to his senses. “Oh! Right!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kakarot stared at his food quietly as he ate at a respectable manner. The small table being completely quiet as silverware and dishes were moved about. This was so awkward. Even though he’s been here for a week, it seemed like he was still getting used to being around these people. Kakarot had questions…oh he had questions. Like, why did the man let them into his home? They could be dangerous, hell, they are dangerous.
What’s more, the guy only asked what happened and that’s when Kakarot made up his story on the spot. Not to mention he was naked and covered in the other prince’s blood. He was even more surprised that the man didn’t ask if he did that to Vegeta. The guy didn’t say anything more and accepted them into his home. Never asked where they were from, didn’t ask for their names, he didn’t even give him a set time on when they should leave. He just…accepted it and is supposedly waiting it out until Vegeta gets better.
Hell, the man never even gave him his name. Kakarot was afraid to ask because he knew he wasn’t going to stay long, at least he thought so, and he wasn’t going to give him his name…at least not his real one. Not to mention, where was the wife of the house? Was she somewhere else? Is she no longer with them? Is there anyone else that Kakarot should be expecting to make an appearance? All these questions and thoughts were making Kakarot even more suspicious about the two…and what’s with that little girl?! She freaked out Kakarot more and more by the day. He prayed that Vegeta got better soon or else he was about to grab the half-breed and leave…whether he was better or not.
“You’re bending the fork.” Lydia pointed out matter-of-factly.
Kakarot looked at the girl in confusion before dropping the fork a second later in shock. “Oh! I’m sorry!”
“It’s fine. It’s just a fork.” The man grunted out with a mouthful of food.
…and then the table was silent again. Kakarot stared at the two in surprise. What, no questions as to how or why he did that?! He sighed. He shouldn’t be complaining. It’s better that they don’t ask. He tried calming himself down so he wouldn’t ruin anything else and went back to eating with his bent fork.
When dinner was over, he offered to help clean up, but was, once again, shooed away. Instead, he decided to go over and keep Vegeta company until it was time for bed. He sat in his usual seat and carefully watched Vegeta’s painful breathing. He took a hold of the sheet hanging off the bed and began to wring it in his hands in worry. He hated seeing him like this. It was a constant reminder of what he should’ve done. He shouldn’t have trusted Raditz. He should’ve acted sooner. He should’ve ran when he had the chance. The cub shook his head. No. He would’ve chased him either way. That confrontation was bound to happen, but Vegeta…why did he attack? Why does he feel it necessary to protect him? Sure they were comrades by now, friends even…is it more than that? Can Vegeta not bear the thought of being without him? Kakarot shook his head again. No, this wishful thinking wasn’t helping. Still…what was it that drove Vegeta? What drives him to keep going?
The cub was snapped out of his thoughts when he saw how labored Vegeta’s breathing was getting and noticed sweat was forming on his brow. Kakarot took the rag from the not so cool water and wrung it out then dabbed it around his face and neck. He laid the rag on Vegeta’s neck then moved to feel Vegeta’s forehead with the back of his hand. He was burning up. Kakarot eyed the bite marks. He must be fighting the venom that entered his system when Raditz bit him…again. Kakarot gave his friend a pitied look. He couldn’t believe he let his brother do that. He thought Vegeta could handle him, but…Kakarot let his brother bite Vegeta. It was his brother that turned Vegeta into what he is after all. One bite was all it took to change him…to ruin his life…and Kakarot let it happen.
“It’ll do you no good to do that, you know.” Kakarot was startled out of his thoughts once again when the man spoke.
He turned to him in confusion. “What?”
The man nodded towards him as he sat down on the other bed to clean his gun. He did that every night. “To worry like that.”
It took a moment for Kakarot to realize that he was crying. “Oh…” He hastily wiped his face and eyes to try and get rid of the evidence. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled with a sniffle. There he went again…acting like a weak, useless cub.
The man grunted as he concentrated on his gun. “If you’re really sorry, then you shouldn’t let something like that happen again.”
Kakarot slouched in his chair as he tried to will the tears to stop. “I know, but I can’t help it.”
The man looked at him. “I meant letting your friend get those bite marks.”
Kakarot sniffled a moment before pausing altogether and looking at the man. “How did you know they were bite marks?”
The man continued cleaning his gun while Lydia sat by the fire and played with her straw dolls. “I’m no stranger to bite marks,” He paused in his words. “Especially werewolf ones.” This made Kakarot stand from his seat in a panic. He backed up a few steps as he waited for the man to stand and shoot him. “Relax, boy. I’m not gonna shoot you, especially no cub.”
Kakarot still held his own. “How did you know?” He whispered, still on guard.
The man took his time, finishing cleaning up his gun, before standing and setting the gun aside. “I used to hunt your kind. Although, I wasn’t as good as the prince there.” He nodded towards Vegeta.
Kakarot gasped as his eyes widened. “How do you know who he is?”
The man made an odd movement with his jaw. Kakarot assumed it was a sneer. “Why wouldn’t I know who he is? He’s the prince of the Russian territory and we are in that territory…” He trailed off, expecting the cub to get the point.
Kakarot looked away for a moment, forgetting where he was, before turning his attention to the burly man again. “Then why don’t you turn him in? You’ll get a reward if you do.” Kakarot lowered his voice in a threatening manner. He won’t let him.
Apparently, this caught the little girl’s attention as she turned to listen in on the conversation. The man clenched his hands into fists at the cub’s words. “Yes. We could use the money, but,” His fists relaxed, “I wouldn’t want to fight the prince of beasts to get to him.”
Before Kakarot could question him some more, he quickly pulled out a piece of paper that was tucked in his shirts and showed it to him. Kakarot stared at the paper for a moment before realization hit him. “Oh, right.” He clenched his teeth. The stupid wanted parchments, which brought him to his next question. “If you knew who we were, then why did you let us in? You know what we’re capable of. You know that you’re in danger as well for even helping us.”
The man sighed as he took his seat back on the bed and made himself comfortable by resting against the wall that the bed was against and stretched out his legs. “When I saw you, I didn’t see a vicious werewolf coming to take me or my little girl. I saw a boy in need of help and it wasn’t for himself, it was for the one he held in his arms. Even when you made up that pathetic lie, I knew you’d do anything to help him, even if it meant carrying him stark naked in the middle of winter to a crumpled little house in the middle of nowhere, even though there’s no doctor here to help him.” He half smirked half smiled. “I’ve never seen your kind do anything like that before. Usually they see humans as food. They don’t bother to use words with the likes of us.” His gaze went to the foot of the bed, as if reliving a memory.
Kakarot slowly took his seat next to Vegeta again, never taking his panicky stare from the man just inches away from him. “You said before, that you used to hunt my kind, you don’t anymore?” The man shook his head, still not looking at him. “What happened? What made you stop?”
The man looked up at him then. “My wife, Lila.” There was a dreadful pause, letting the information sink in before he continued on. “I was out on a hunt when she was attacked. Lydia was sleeping in her crib when it happened. The beast wanted revenge for its fallen comrades that I took down. So, it followed my scent to my house and…” He trailed off, not wanting to finish, but not showing any signs that he didn’t want to.
After a moment, Kakarot gave him his pitied expression as the familiar pang of guilt rose in him. “I’m sorry.”
The man gave him a sneer/smirk. “What are you apologizing for? Any mongrel with a sense of smell would’ve done that to any human.” There was a long pause as the two listened to the crackling of the fire where Lydia sat until the man spoke again. “How many humans have you killed?” He gave the cub a piercing gaze.
Kakarot’s head shot up at the question. “N-None. I…” He chuckled after a moment. “I’ve never even met a human.” He answered slowly. “Until I met Vegeta, that is. Well, as human as he gets.” He turned his gaze to the half breed then back at the man. “Tell me, what did you do after your wife was taken from you? Did you get revenge?” The man narrowed his eyes at him. Kakarot stuttered a little. “I-I’m sorry. That was too personal. I shouldn’t have asked.” His attention went back to Vegeta and he put his hands to work by rewetting the rag and dragging it over Vegeta’s heated skin.
The man seemed to watch the movement closely. As if in any minute, Kakarot was going to snap and just put Vegeta out of his misery. Instead, Vegeta just sighed in relief as his breathing seemed to be more under control then Kakarot laid the rag on Vegeta’s forehead. Kakarot just sat back and watched him. Lydia did the same. “So,” Her father broke the silence, “despite my caring of your story or not, I’m curious anyway. After all, I did just tell you mine.”
Without looking at the man, Kakarot sighed. He didn’t know where to start or how to tell it. So, he just said, “We have the same enemy.” The man shifted in interest, so Kakarot reluctantly continued. “My father.” He concluded, thinking that was enough explanation.
However, the stranger pressed. “What’d he do to you?”
Kakarot let out another sigh and slumped his shoulders. Really wishing this man would just let it go. He seemed to not care about them when they arrived, why now? Then again, wasn’t this what he wanted? To actually have a conversation with the kind family that let them in? It may be small, but still a family. Subconsciously, Kakarot fingered the collar that was still around his neck. Funny, after everything that he’s been through and all that he knows, he still couldn’t take the thing off. The man eyed it, still waiting for an answer. “He lied to me.” Kakarot whispered, but knew the man heard it. “I grew up believing…” He shrugged and let out a scoff, as if he couldn’t put to words in what he was trying to say. “That we were…unique?” He tried the word to see if it would fit. It’d have to do. “But normal. Just…something that the humans couldn’t accept. Only to learn that…” He shook his head. It was almost hard to believe that not long ago he believed these lies, and yet he couldn’t bring himself to know what it was like believing in the them again. How could he? He couldn’t just discard the truth. “We hunt humans.” He swallowed, trying to get rid of that stubborn lump. “And it’s all my fault.” His voice cracked in the end so he said no more.
The man sat back at that. “How’s that?”
Kakarot leaned forward and brushed a few strands from Vegeta’s sweaty face. He didn’t think about it, he just felt like doing it. “My mother died when I was born and father felt so heartbroken that he thought the humans should lose a queen too. So…the war started.” That was the short and not-so-sweet version.
Before the man could ask another question, Vegeta chose that moment to wake. His eyes slit open at first then opened up more when he saw Kakarot sitting next to him. “Vegeta?” Kakarot asked hopefully. Happy beyond all reason that the half breed was finally awake.
“W-Water.” Vegeta croaked out.
“Water?” Kakarot asked stupidly before he realized he had to fetch water. “Oh! I’ll get it! Stay awake, okay?” He almost placed his hands on him as if willing him to stay awake before he ran off to get water.
Vegeta panted after Kakarot’s retreating form and tried to do what he asked. When he was about to nod off again, a man took perch where Kakarot was sitting. Nothing was said between them. They just stared at one another. This made Vegeta want to stay awake even more. After all, a strange man was in his presence and could kill him at any moment. He tried moving again, but was only able to get a couple inches off the bed before plopping back down. “You shouldn’t move. Any human would’ve died, but you lived…somehow.” The man grunted perplexedly.
“How…how long was I out?” Vegeta grunted back.
“A week.”
The half breed prince let out a breath. “Damn it all.”
The next moment, Kakarot came bursting in with a pail of water. “I have it!” He said unnecessarily. “Is he still awake?” He moved around to see if Vegeta was indeed still awake and sighed in relief. “Oh good.” He set the pail by the bed then plunged the dipper in the water and brought it up to Vegeta’s dry lips. “Here.”
Vegeta tried lifting his head up to drink, but was still weak to do so. However, Kakarot helped him out by lifting his head for him and tilted the dipper to his lips. Vegeta drank eagerly. Even though it was painful to swallow, he was still grateful to get some sort of liquid into his system. When the dipper was empty, he croaked out for more. Kakarot happily got it for him and helped him drink it again. When that was gone, Vegeta just rested his head on Kakarot’s arm and let him hold him. If he were well, he’d be having a serious fit about it, but right now, he was feeling too terrible to care. He was just glad someone else did.
“How are you feeling?” Kakarot asked as he brushed back his hair again, a nervous habit, Vegeta noticed.
“Like shit.” Vegeta no longer croaked, thankfully, but his voice still sounded hoarse. “What happened to-?” He stopped when he remembered that they were with company.
Kakarot’s happy demeanor suddenly turned somber. “I don’t know, but I managed to find help for you. Your wrist is broken and your arm is shredded, but you’re getting better. I…was actually worried that weren’t going to wake up.” He sniffed softly, as if holding back tears.
Vegeta let out a tired sigh. “You’re such a child.” He eyed his bandaged wrist and arm to confirm Kakarot’s words.
Kakarot’s expression fell even more. “I’m sorry.”
Vegeta tried to chuckle, but it just turned into a weak moan. “Don’t be. You are one…after all.” Without his permission, his eyes closed and he fell into a dreamless sleep once again.
“Vegeta…” Kakarot murmured as he watched Vegeta fall asleep again.
The man still sitting by the bed grunted, causing Kakarot to jump slightly. He completely forgot he was there. “Let him sleep. Now that he’s got some water in him, he should have some more strength in him by tomorrow.” He stood. “Let’s follow his example and get some sleep ourselves.”
Kakarot watched him pick up his daughter and tuck her into the other bed. He kissed her goodnight then made himself comfortable on the rug by the fire where Lydia was just playing. Kakarot looked down at the sleeping half breed for a moment longer then laid his head on the pillow provided for him. He went around and sat in the chair that the man was just sitting in and rested his arms on the side of the bed and pillowed his head on them. With the sound of the crackling fire and Vegeta’s calm breathing, Kakarot fell right to sleep.

I have no plan for this story. Lol. I’m just winging it right now. Then again, it’s not like it’s the first time I’ve done that with a story. I do have a couple ideas though, I just don’t know when I’ll make them happen. Hopefully soon, since I’m running out of material to write. Be patient with me. :)
