AN part 2: Just came up with a real plot for this fic last night while talking with Lutz. I think it was around 1am or so don't expect anything sane ^^.

A deal or two

Ed watched Winry being dragged away by an overenthusiastic Hughes. But he guessed this was as good a way as any to get rid of the money hungry automail mechanic. At least his arm was working again. Now he worried that something was wrong with Alphonse. He had just quietly walked out while Ed and Winry were having an argument. And he'd been acting weirdly ever since they had been in the 5th research facility.

"She's cute, isn't she?"

Ed almost had a heart attack but this time he knew just who it'd be sitting on the window sill.

"What are you doing here again?!"

Envy just looked at him and shrugged grinning. "Aren't you happy to see me again? And I came all this way just to see you. I hardly think you're being nice to me, ochibi-san." Envy said pretending to be sad.

"You promised you wouldn't call me that again." Ed said barely restraining himself.

He could in theory attack now since he could do alchemy again but� He had a nagging feeling that he wouldn't win a fight against Envy yet� not in his condition. He remembered the kick all too well. Besides as long as Envy kept his promise of not trying to hurt or kill him or Al he could tolerate the other's presence.

"I promised I would try to not call you that and believe me I'm trying hard here. But let's get back to my original question. Do you think she's cute? That automail mechanic girl?"

"As if anything I think is any of your business." Ed said deciding to ignore his unwanted quest.

"Ahh so you do think that she's cute!" Envy said ignoring the death glare he got from Ed. "But really� I wouldn't say that she's your type. Wouldn't it be a bit scary to know that she knows better how your leg and arm work than you?"

"�"

"Besides while she is kinda cute she's not all that hot," Envy continued happily, "I mean I'm way cuter than her anyway, right?"

"As if I'm answering a question like that." Ed scoffed, looking away.

He heard the soft sound of footsteps walking to the bed, but he didn't turn to look at the intruder but hoped instead that ignoring him would make him go away. But like always the things you hope for don't come so easily as he found when Envy grabbed his braid and forced him to turn to look at him.

"What do you think you're doing now?!" he growled when his hand was grabbed too, preventing him from punching the idiot.

He got a little worried when the usually chatty Envy didn't answer but instead looked at his face closely.

"Oi!"

Suddenly Envy grinned in his usual happy/psycho way. "You're cuter than her too."

Ed would've given another arm just to stop the blush from rising to his cheeks but again his wish was denied. He stubbornly kept his eyes on Envy's, even though he could see that the other was getting more and more amused.

"Just like I said, ochibi-san, really cute!" Envy said tapping the boy's nose.

He ignored Ed's surprise and anger at being treated like that and leaned back letting the boy have more space. Ed was glaring again.

"Don't look like that. You'd be even cuter if you'd stop all that glaring. Come on! Smile a little!" Envy said.

"Stop that." Ed just said and backed away.

"Hmm? Why? I've already said that I'm not going to hurt you," Envy just said pretending to be hurt. "or maybe you're just shy."

"Like hell I am. Now go back to whatever hole you crawled out from!" Ed said.

"Looks like I'll have to do that since your brother is coming back," Envy said standing up. "but don't worry I'll be keeping a close eye on you, ochibi-san."

With that he was gone, and even though it was against his better judgment Ed didn't tell anyone about his visit.

On the roof of the hospital Envy sat down on the railing and looked at the city. He sneered at the humans that walked past the building doing their everyday things. He didn't like humans who thought they had the right to do anything they wanted to just because they could do it. The Fullmetal kid was a good example of that arrogathatthat was so typical of humans. But even Envy had to grudgingly admit that the boy had paid the price. And� without foolish people attempting the forbidden alchemy of human transmutation none of the homunculi would exist.

And even though he despised the humans he wanted to become one.

He looked like a human but he knew very well that he wasn't one. He was a homunculus, an artificial human. In some ways the body he now had was even more artificial than the kid's automail. The body wouldn't age and he couldn't die. He could take the form of anyone or anything he wanted to and he had to admit that sometimes it was fun but� In the long run if he ever got the chance to become a real human he'd take it.

Of course that wouldn't stop him from despising them, but at least he could stand on even ground with them while doing so.

"And maybe then I'd know what it really feels to be alive." he said tracing the mark on his left leg with his fingertip. "But now I've got other things to do."

Ah yes� He was supposed to look after the Fullmetal kid since at the moment he was their best chance in getting that humanity they so wanted. But even if they didn't need the boy alive for that, Envy doubted that he would've kept him alive for sheer amusement value.

The boy was simply too determined to just give up and die, though he had almost sacrificed his life once for his brother. And even though he knew full well the dangers of human transmutation it didn't stop him from searching for ways to restore Alphonse's body.

And the boy was cute. Envy smirked and turned his gaze to the sky. He had to wonder what the boy would look like smiling if he was that cute even when he was angry. Envy contemplated for a minute whether he should stop annoying the boy so much and see if he got a smile for it, but then decided that it was too much fun to stop it. Besides, that would just make it all the more challenging to get that smile out of the boy.

"I just know I'd be sad if I had to kill him." Envy said regretfully.

He looked behind him when he heard the door open and close. To his surprise it was the Fullmetal kid. The boy's eyes widened when he saw Envy sitting there on the railing but he didn't stop walking until he reached the railing. He leaned against it but didn't say anything.

"Something troubling you?" Envy asked more out of curiosity than concern.

"It's nothing� What are you still doing here?"

Envy cocked his head to the side and looked at the boy. He didn't believe him when he said that nothing had happened. When he'd been in the hospital room with the boy there wasn't a sign of depression on his face but now he looked like someone had just sucker punched him. And Envy knew that look from experience.

"Well I could hardly look after you from far away. And I thought we agreed that you'd tolerate me as long as I felt the need to hang around you," Envy answered. "and I'm here to remind you that you're alive as long as you're useful to us."

"Is that so�" Ed just said.

Envy's suspicions that there really was something seriously wrong with the boy were confirmed. He put his fingers under the boy's chin and raised his face. No protest came. Now Envy was starting to get a little worried. If the ochibi-san acted like this it wouldn't be any fun. Where would the fun be in looking after a person who could as well be a walking corpse?

"How about we make another deal, ochibi-san?" Envy asked grinning.

Now that got a small reaction out of the boy. His expression changed from indifferent to suspicious. Ah so the boy wasn't stupid.

"Why would I make a neal eal with you when you haven't kept your part of the last deal?" Ed asked narrowing his eyes.

"Because this time I will keep my side of it and your part is the easier one," Envy answered jumping down from the railing.

"And what is the deal this time?" Ed asked.

"I'm willing to extend my protection to cover your brother as well if you do one little thing for me," Envy answered smiling.

Ed thought about the deal and Envy could see that he had struck home with the offer. Nothing and no one was more precious to the chibi alchemist than his little brother. And it wasn't like it'd be too much bother to look after them both since that was what he was supposed to be doing anyway. Alphonse might not be just as powerful as his older brother but he had his uses too.

"And what would I have to do to get you to do that?" Ed asked still suspicious.

"All I ask for is a smile from you," Envy said grinning. "from this day on I will be your friend and you will act like it when you see me. Now I know it's too much to ask you to give up that grouchy temper of yours but I require at least one smile per time I see you." Envy explained happily.

"WHAT?!" Ed shrieked.

"Well do we have a deal, ochibi-san? It's not like I'm asking a lot from you."

"Fine. I'll accept that stupid deal if it'll keep you quiet. Just one smile? Sure I can do that." Ed said.

They both turned to look at the door when they heard the approaching heavy footsteps.

"Why are we always interrupted so rudely?" Envy asked sighing disappointedly.

And he had wanted to collect his first smile today too.

"Well I'll be seeing you later Fullmetal! Use the time to practice smiling since you've probably forgotten how to do it by now."

Envy laughed when he walked away from the hospital. Maybe it had sounded like a stupid thing to request from the boy but he had done it for two reasons. Firstly if he got Fullmetal to agree on silly little deals like this it would be easier to move on to bigger deals. The good thing about the kid was that he actually kept his part of the deal pretty well. The second reason was of course the amusement value.

It would be fun to see Ed smiling forcedly every time he decided to visit the boy. Maybe they weren't good reasons, but it wasn't like he cared what other people thought. He might as well take the most of the time he spent watching the kid.

A/N: Yes it is a very stupid deal but so what! Smiling Ed is cute dammit! And I need to show that to Envy too ya know? And well the hinting to bigger deals� *grins evilly* you'll just have to wait till later chapters. *laughs madly* Er.. sorry *coughs*
