Finding

Chap:2

The air was cold, crisp and painful to the lungs. Jean Havoc walked casually behind Mustang and Hawkeye. The halls were completely bare. They had gone through three floors of nothing but empty laboratories and dead chimeras, still locked in their cages. It looked as though their inspection was going to be just a waist of time, there hadn’t even been any documents or research papers, everything had been swept clean. Up until Hawkeye stopped and pivoted her weight to face a closed door to her right. It had been the only door in this hall... all the other floors had been full of rooms, but this seemed to be the only one on this floor.
“Colonel.” Hawkeye stepped back to allow her superior to pass her by. Mustang pushed the door open without hesitation. Hawkeye reached behind her overcoat to place her hand on the butt of one of her guns, just incase.
Havoc’s cigarette fell from his mouth to the floor.
“What in god’s name?” Jean stood stock still, as Roy and Riza moved quickly to investigate.
“Go get Hughes ... now!” Mustang shouted to Havoc. His subordinate didn’t move. His eyes locked on the sight before him. “Now Havoc! Snap out of it!”
“Yes, sir!” Jean ran from the room to retrieve the investigations officer.
Roy had no idea what to think. In front of him was a young woman who looked to be unconscious. She was bound to the wall by her neck, wrists and ankles by thick steel rings imbedded into the wall. An I.V. inserted in ether of her forearms, connected into a machine to the left of her. A skin tight black bodysuit covered her toned, compact body. Long, rich auburn hair with chestnut highlights hung nearly to her waist. Her oval shaped face was tilted upwards, due to the restraints forcing her head back.
“Do you think she’s human sir?” Hawkeye stood right beside her Colonel, looking at him questionably.
The girl couldn’t have been beyond her early twenties. She looked strong. Though she was helplessly held to the wall, she still carried an aura of power and danger. Even Riza, as a human, could feel she was no ordinary girl.
“Let’s not assume anything, lieutenant.” Mustang walked closer, reaching out to caress the prisoner’s hand gently. “She hasn’t been here long… she’s in to good of health to have spent much time in this place. Lets get her out of her, and perhaps we can question her about that.”
“Sir?” Hawkeye spoke with a hint of concern.
Moments later Jean came though the door with the lieutenant coronal of investigations on his heals.
“Woe! Where’d this one come from?” Maize announced his entrance carelessly. A surprised look on his face, none the less, didn’t seem to be genuine. It took a lot more than this to truly surprise the lieutenant colonel.
“This the only interesting find in this place? Shier the dead chimeras aren’t the kind of things you see left and forgotten about every day, but a girl lock up in the basement, the guys that ran this place had to be some sick bastards, I mean,”
“Hughes.” Mustang shot Maize a sharp look of annoyance.
“Ok, ok, but still… you have to admit this is all a little more than strange. All these abandoned chimeras… and now a girl in the basement stuck to the wall…”
“I want this woman taken to H.Q. and looked after.” Roy took his hand from the girl’s. “Have you found any files on what was going on here?”
“The only record I’ve got on this place is from three years ago.”
“Anything suspicious?” Roy turned to his old friend.
“Well, there was some illegal transporting of ‘special’ Chimeras, but the transporters were caught and the cargo was confiscated and disposed of before it reached it’s destination, no descriptions on the Chimeras ether. Other than that, I’ve got nothing.” Maize looked up at the girl for the briefest of moments, “Oh! And I got the name of the guy that owned the place, Albert Fisher.”
“Well then, you can track him dawn cant you?” Mustang breathed a sigh of relief.
“I wouldn’t celebrate just yet Roy. The man’s been dead for nearly as long as this facilities’ been closed. I don’t think digging up his corps would help.”
“What… then how?”
Maize cut him off short “His son took over the business in secret. That’s the only explanation I could find, and even that isn’t certain, but he was only nineteen when his father died. Not an offal lot of time to learn how to take over a major testing facility and run it smoothly, especially right under the noses of the military it once worked for. ”
“ but he abandoned it… he left all those test subjects to die… and this one… this girl here… where did she come from, Hughes?” Roy turned around to look at his company behind him. “Hawkeye, I wont you to go file this report… Havoc, head back to H.Q. and continue with your duties. That will be all.”
His subordinates caught the drift that the colonel wonted to be left in privet to speak to Maize. Both of them dutifully obeyed their commands and left the room without question.
Hughes watched the two solders leave, then tuned to the poor girl pined to the wall. “ I have no idea Roy… I have no idea what they were doing with her… she must have been quite important to this lab for them to isolate her like this, and never put her in the books. All the other test subjects have records. I found them all in a computer lab on the west side of the facility.”
“So you did find information.”
“Yes… it’s slim, but it’s there. Some of the documents are in cryptogram, so it might take me a wile to decode them.”
“Those may be about this girl… lets get her down from there Hughes… I can’t look at her hanging like that anymore.”
The two men couldn’t break the bonds… and Roy didn’t want to risk using alchemy and harming the girl, let alone the intricate wiring all around her.
“I think I found something.” The investigations officer moved to a control panel in the back corner of the room.
“What?” Roy let his hands rest from yanking on the thick metal. He had at least managed removing the long needles from the veins in her arms.
Maize tapped a few buttons on the panel and presto, the young woman fell to the ground as the restraints retracted back into the wall. Roy caught her far before she hit the floor.
“Let’s move Hughes. I don’t want any questions on our way out”
“Right.”
Getting out was easier than they would have ever thought it would be. Roy wasn’t questioned when he got into a squad car with an unconscious girl in his arms. Maize got back to H.Q first, and efficiently retrieved a trusted medic to take the girl into custody.

“I better get back there… I need to lead the team in a thorough sweep of that pace. Those guys can’t do anything right without me. I’ll check back later Roy.”
“Thanks, Hughes.” Roy sat behind his desk, reading the files on the lab history, given to him by Maize. There certainly were fewer papers than he had expected. There were only twenty or so pages of information on a facility that had been running for over fifteen years. They had been hiding far more than just a few chimeras from the military’s record books.
Mustang never would have thought he’d find a subject such as the girl in the laboratory. It bothered him to think that she might not be human, that she could have been created in the testing facility. The lab results from the girl’s blood samples wouldn’t be back for several days, but Roy already had his suspicions.
