Admiral ShadowWolf: I’m only getting started …
Zee and Moiira: I make no promises on updates for this one.
Kalendral9: No, this isn’t part of the PE verse, but it was inspired by that part of the back story.
Sigart: so … I have a distinctive style, huh?
kit-kit: thanks ^^
animeslave18: I’ll add more – when you least expect it.
Zofo: so you’re saying Vegeta has an onion for a heart? That explains a lot …
It’s interesting that in the last two weeks, I’ve gotten two reviews of older stories: one saying that sub!Vegeta as I write him is a pansy, and another praising me on my accurate depiction of a BDSM relationship. Time for a small pet peeve rant; I will keep it short this time.
Take a moment. Think about the strength of character it takes to choose to be vulnerable. Think about the courage it takes to trust someone that much. Ask yourself honestly: could you go that far?
Oh, and the fic that led to the “pansy” remark was “Who’s Topping Who.” I’ll let you judge for yourselves how many miles that point was missed by. ^^

Enough with Teh Serious. Here’s another bit of the story, mostly because I am busy with end-of-term stuff and it was lying around on my hard drive. I am working on the April Fool’s Special for next week, though. This is just a bit of character and plot development.

Chapter 2: Returning And Leaving
***
Goku was only mildly surprised, when he arrived at his little house on the outskirts of the city, to find the living room stacked with Chichi’s bags and a sheaf of legal papers on the table. “I’m only staying long enough to tell you that I’ve had it,” she said. “I’m moving back in with my father, and I won’t have to deal with your fight-obsessed butt anymore!”
He replied with what was at the top of his mind: “I can still play with Gohan, right?”
“Sure, if he has any time – he’s going to study and become a productive citizen, not like you. And you can lie in your cold bed in your empty house and think of a way to pay the bills before you try this on some other woman – you won’t get a red cent of mine.” Ignoring the fact that she had pressured him into marrying her, she folded her luggage into a capsule and stamped out the door.
Goku gave the door a bemused look. Whose money did she think had been paying the bills all this time? He’d known for a while that Chichi would eventually leave him, ever since he’d understood the emotions that humans expected from a spouse. He’d married her to honor a promise, even though it was a promise made in ignorance, but that was all. He didn’t feel any more for her than for any of his friends, and though they’d had sex as a purely physical matter, he didn’t find her arousing, either. And he knew she disapproved of his lifestyle. He’d expected those reactions. What he didn’t know was where she’d gotten the idea that he had no money.
He picked up the stack of documents – divorce papers – and sat down on the couch to read them. One nice thing about his recent maturation was that now he could actually sit still and focus long enough to get through the lot. According to the first few pages, Chichi was able to finalize the divorce in his absence since he’d been away for more than two years. He verified that, though Chichi had official custody of Gohan, he could see his son without restrictions. That was the most important thing. A bit further back, in the section on property, he found that Chichi had stipulated that neither of them would have any claim on the other’s property, now or in the future – apparently to keep his hands off her money. He laughed out loud.

Chichi parked her aircar in front of the house she grew up in and waltzed in the door. “Hi Father. I feel so much better now!”
The Ox-king swept her into a hug. “Dear daughter, your mother and I are happy to have you and Gohan staying with us. I’m sorry that it didn’t work out with you and Goku.”
“Yeah. And now you can sell the house and dump his ass in the cold, for all I care.”
The Ox-king blinked. “That house doesn’t belong to me.”
“What?”
***
Goku tossed what few belongings he wanted in a knapsack and left the house; without his family here, he had no reason to hang around. He stopped at a supermarket to buy some provisions – a sack each of potatoes, carrots, and apples, a turkey, barbecue sauce, a few loaves of bread and a couple of cartons of eggs for breakfast. He packed it all up and flew away from the city towards the cabin he’d built on his grandfather’s – now his – land. The house he’d grown up in had fallen to pieces about the time he was hiking around the world, and he’d replaced it with a sturdier building of ki-fused stone. It had a well and solar panels for power and everything. If he had his choice, and now he did, he’d live out there all the time.
He unlocked the door and went in, put his groceries on the table, then walked through the house opening windows and pulling off dust sheets. There was evidence of a few mice, but not any significant damage. He switched on the breakers, made sure the water was running, and put the turkey in the oven. One of the kitchen drawers was full of capsules; he found the one labeled Starter Kit and opened it for bedding, towels and a basket full of firewood. It wasn’t much, the place was simply furnished … though now that he had Vegeta, he’d have to get some more accessories. It was probably a good time to check on his accounts.
The elder Son Gohan had been a hermit by choice, not by necessity; besides owning the land around his cabin, he’d had a fair amount of savings in the bank. Goku, as his legally adopted child, had inherited all of it. At the time he hadn’t known or cared what to do with it, and was happy enough to let Bulma find him an accountant. It had been a good choice. All the money he received – first and second prizes from the World Tournaments, gifts from Master Roushi, Fortune Teller Baba, the King of Earth and others – all went into the pot. By the time Gohan was born he’d had enough to live off the interest, and buy the house as well.
He sensed his son’s ki approaching and went to the cabin door to greet him. “Come on in, Gohan, I’ve got the fireplace going.”
“Thanks, Dad.” They curled up together on a blanket on the hearth, and Goku stuck some potatoes in the coals to roast. “Mom just about had a conniption. Her voice hurts my ears when she yells. She said that you’re not married anymore, are you upset?”
“A little, but I knew it was going to happen. And she can’t make me stop being your Dad.” He gave Gohan a brief hug. “Did the two of you have any trouble when I was away?”
“Not really. Mom always talked about fancy clothes she wanted to buy, but I thought that was silly. And Bulma got me video games for my birthday, but Mom wouldn’t let me play them.”
Typical Chichi. “You like video games, huh?”
“Yeah! They’re exciting, and there’s lots of stuff to figure out, like how to open a door or what the boss’s weak point is. Master Roushi plays with me sometimes, but he won’t let me borrow his games. He says they’re only for grown-ups.”
Goku chuckled. “He’s probably telling the truth.”
“I guess. Oh yeah, and Piccolo is teaching me to fight.”
“Really? He must be getting nicer.” They talked late into the evening, until Gohan fell asleep on the couch. Goku wrapped him up in the blanket and padded out onto the porch to watch the stars. He’d visited so many of them – but only a handful of those that he could see from here. And now he was home. He had his son, his friends … and Vegeta; the next couple of years were going to be the best so far.

I see a very awkward divorce trial in the future … the over all plan is for chapters to alternate between Vegeta’s and Goku’s POV, so back to lemons in the next chapter.
