Kai searched his bag for his car keys, cursing under his breath in Russian. The damned things always seemed to place themselves under every single other thing in it. The afternoon class had actually been fun, but he found himself slipping in to his old role as the tough and demanding teacher/trainer he had always been. They kids had seemed a little intimidated, but they were all very talented – and he told them that.
Where the hell were the goddamned keys? He managed to get a nice paper-cut, and put the tip of the injured finger in his mouth, hissing. Nothing was going his way today.
“Kai?” a female voice said from the direction of the neighboring day care center. He looked up and saw a familiar face approach him.
“Hilary!” he blurted out.
The small brunette woman hurried up to him and caught him in a big hug, totally forgetting his dislike of physical contact.
“I can't believe it's you!” she said. “I never thought I'd see you back in Tokyo.”
He gave a slight smile, and looked down at the tiny little girl hiding behind her. She had beautiful pale golden hair, and eyes as blue as Tala's heavenly orbs.
((No. Don't go there, Kai. Don't think of him now.))
“Is that Melody?” he asked. Hilary nodded proudly. “Wow, she's gotten so big! She's beautiful, Hil.”
“Yes, she is,” the brunette smiled. “Say hi to Kai, Melody. He's your godfather, and a very good friend of mommy's.”
The big blue eyes looked anxiously at him.
“Is he bad too?” she whispered. “Like daddy?”
Hilary went pale, and Kai's eyes widened.
“What's going on, Hil?” he inquired. “Why did she say that?”
Hilary bit her lip and was quiet for a moment.
“Can we go somewhere and talk?” she asked. The phoenix nodded, and finally got hold of his keys. He unlocked the doors to his shining blue Mustang. (He had bought it the third day there. He had one just like it back in Moscow, and loved it. This kind of cars was one of his few weaknesses.)
“We can go over to my place,” he said and opened the door for her. “I've got a feeling that this isn't something you want to talk about in a cafe.”

Hilary smiled when they stepped in to his two bedroom apartment.
“I remember this place so well,” she said. “Your housewarming party was the best!”
“And nothing I had in any way planned,” he smiled. “That's what you get when you have four crazy Russians as friends, and they get together with your crazy self-proclaimed kid brothers. But, yeah, it was fun.”
Hilary placed her little daughter in front of the tv and they went out to the kitchen. Kai put two cups of coffee on the bar table, thanking heavens for his household adapted coffee machine. Hilary took a sip, and smiled again.
“Chai latte with extra cream. You never forget anything, do you?”
“No.” He sat down and took a gulp of his own strong black coffee. “So what's going on, Hil?”
Her eyes reddened, and she pulled the collar of her purple turtleneck down a bit. Big bruises covered her small neck. Kai knew only too well how marks like that were made. He'd had them himself a few (read: many many) times. His eyes filled with anger.
“I'll kill that motherfucker!” he growled. “How long have this been going on?”
“Forever.” She took a deep breath. “Miguel thinks I'm too outspoken. He wants his woman to be quiet and obedient.”
“That just proves that he's fucked up,” Kai stated, and put his hand over her small and shaking one. “Why didn't you call me? I haven't changed my number since I left, and I told you that if you ever had any trouble you'd call me straight away. I would've been on the next plane, no matter where in the world I was. You're my family, Hilary. You and the rest of the team.”
“Miguel checks my phone. If I call someone he hasn't allowed me to call...” She broke down and cried. Kai got up from his chair and put his arms around her. She clung to his shirt, and he felt her tears wet the fabric.
“You are not going back there, Hil,” he said. “For your sake, and Melody's, you need to stay away from him. He will hurt you if he finds out you talked to me.”
“He really hates you,” she said with a faint laugh. “But where will we go?”
“I've got a spare bedroom here, you know,” he reminded her. “You can stay as long as you want.”
“Or until he fins me,” she sighed. “He always does.”
“But this time he will have to get past me first. And if he tries to hurt my family, he will get what's coming to him. Retroactively.”
“Thank you,” Hilary whispered.

Melody was a bit intimidated by the tall red eyed man at first. Kai solved it by giving her Dranzer's blade to play with while they were preparing dinner; Kai's famous woked beef and veggies. But when the phoenix was slicing the greens, Hilary noticed something about her old friend. She grabbed his slender left hand and looked at it, and then at his face.
“Where's your ring, Kai?” she asked. “Why aren't you wearing it?”
The bluenette re-claimed his hand, and a look of pain and sadness filled the crimson eyes.
“I'm not wearing it,” he said in a low voice. “Because we broke up. Well, I broke up with him.”
Hilary just stared at him for a long time, before she managed to collect herself.
“What?” she blurted out. “But you guys were like glued to each other! The last year before you left, we never saw you without each other. What in God's name happened?”
Kai sighed.
“Tala is very jealous and controlling,” he said. “And got some mad idea in his head that I was cheating on him every time I was out or away on business. We fought about it constantly. It got physical sometimes, and we could have killed each other if the rest of the guys hadn't been living with us. It hurt so fucking bad that he didn't trust me, when I'd rather cut my heart out than sleep with someone else. When I was out, he called me every hour. If I didn't pick up, he'd go straight for my throat when I got back. We've put each other in the ER a few times. And Rei was like a red blanket to him. He couldn't stand the idea of me and Rei alone together. The last drop, the one that made me leave him, was when I found out that he'd actually been spying on me. Lee got killed in a car crash two weeks ago, and Rei was completely devastated when he got the news. I went over there to try and comfort him, cause he was hysteric – and Kevin and Mariah weren't strong enough to keep him still. They were just as upset as him, seeing Lee was Mariah's big brother and Kevin's idol. I had to hold him down by force until he calmed down.
And when I came home, at three in the morning, all hell broke loose. The first thing I saw when I walked through the front door, was Tala's fist heading for my face. We had a huge fight, and I walked out on him.”
“Oh, God,” she said and stroked his shoulder. “Is that why you came back here?”
He nodded and put the sliced meet and vegetables in the hot pan.
“Staying in Hong Kong, or going back to Moscow wasn't an option. So I called Mr. D, and he saved my ass – yet again. Seriously, sometimes I feel like that's all he's been doing since I first met him. I screw up, and he saves me. Anyway, I have a house here, but that'd be the first place Tala would go if he figured out that I went here.”
They were quiet while Kai finished making the dinner and Hilary got her daughter out to the kitchen. Halfway through the meal, Hilary had another question.
“So what were you doing at Keniwa High?”
Kai took a sip of his water.
“I work there,” he said. “I teach art.”
“Right!” the brunette said. “I forgot that you paint. But why a teaching job? Don't you still run a multinational company?”
“I do. But it doesn't keep my mind occupied every day. I'm mostly called in as the heavy artillery. Half of the business world is afraid of me, and they call me when negotiations freeze up. I get reports every week, and I'm stuck in video conferences a few times a week, but the rest of the time... I haven't gotten hold of any new painting supplies yet, and it's not enough anyway. I need to do something. See people. I'm prone to melancholy, as you know. And this situation is too good a hotbed for it. And this time I don't have Tala and the guys here to keep me sane, sober and clean.”
She nodded. Kai had always been the dark and brooding one. It had taken quite a while for his team to get him to open up. But when they did, the found an extra ' big brother', and a fiercely loyal friend. And he was a good person to tell all of your problems to. He would look like he was still reading his book, or practicing his blading, but he heard every word you said. When you had finished, he could always suggest a solution, in his own distant way. He never actually said that he cared, but he always had their backs. And if someone messed with them, he would take it upon himself to make sure that it didn't happen again. Violence was his second nature, after growing up in the Abbey. And due to the chip in his head, he was a lot stronger and faster than normal people.
He had been so pissed off when they had found out about the chip. It had showed up on an x-ray at their annual physical. The doctor had not thought about it and accidentally showed the image to them all. He had had a fit of rage like they had never seen before, and then he had gone missing for almost two weeks, before Mr. Dickinson found him again. After that, the portly man told them never to ask him about the Abbey or what happened to him. The memories were very painful to Kai, and he was trying hard to forget all about it.
Hilary knew he had blood on his hands, even though none of them had ever dared to ask him straight out if he really had killed people. She remembered so well the time he went to Moscow on one of his mysterious trips. The next day it was on the news that Voltaire had mysteriously died. It looked like he'd hung himself, but there were things in the case that didn't add up. Two days later, Kai had come back to the house, looking like he always did. Only his eyes were different. They had a new glow in them. Six months later, Boris Balkov had gone missing as well. They were all a little scared of him, because there were so many things he kept hidden from them. Every now and then he would plunge into pitch black depressions, lie listless in his bed for days on ends and then disappear for a week. No one ever knew where he went or what he did, and the look on his face when he came back told them very clearly that they shouldn't even think of asking.
They finished eating. Melody had stuffed as much food in her mouth as she possibly could, and now she was very sleepy. Kai smiled softly at her tired eyes, and Hilary caught herself unprepared for such a look on the sharp face.
“I think Melody oughta go to bed now,” he said. Hilary looked at the tiny blonde girl.
“You are absolutely right about that,” she smiled. They took the little girl by a hand each and walked her to the guest bedroom. She looked even smaller in the queen sized bed, and her eyes were big and scared as they made to walk back out in the other room.
“Mommy,” she whimpered. “I'm scared.”
Hilary stopped, and so did Kai. She looked at her long time friend and then at her beloved child.
“She is afraid of the dark,” she explained. “Miguel has scared her. She usually has a night light.”
Kai frowned.
“Well, that I haven't got at the moment,” he said. “But I got an idea.” He walked up to the bed and gently pried the blue blade from her small hand.
“No one is going to hurt you, Melody,” he said. “I'll make sure of that.” He looked at the bitchip, that was glowing in a scarlet red. “Dranzer,” he said. “I need you.”
Out of the blade came the magnificent bitbeast that had captivated the whole world during his career. She wasn't as big as she was during battles, but she eminated a soothing warmth and light. With a soft coo, she nipped Kai's shirt. The bluenette smiled affectionately at the bird.
“Hey girl,” he said. “Melody here is afraid of the dark. Can you please look after her until Hilary goes to bed?” The bitbeast made another soft coo and placed herself next to the headboard. Kai looked at the small girl in the bed. Her eyes were the size of saucers, but a fascinated look covered the delicate face. “Dranzer will make sure no one hurts or scares you.”
Melody nodded and curled up, burying her face in the pillows. He walked back to the door where the brunette mother of the girl was standing. She looked stunned.
“I didn't know you could release her without launching the blade,” she said. Kai chuckled.
“I always have. Launching her blade first and do the whole 'calling out'-thing is just for show. People expects it. But I would never do it at home. How stupid wouldn't it look to do that in your living room when you just want some company.” Now it was Hilary's turn to chuckle.
“You've got a point.”
They walked out to the living room and placed themselves in the big couch. Kai turned the tv back on and flipped through the channels to find something worth watching. It ended up being the Shining. He smiled a bit bitterly. This would be the first time in four years he watched a horror without an unconscious wolf in his lap. The pain made itself known again and he sighed. Hilary caught sight of the photo album, lying thrown on the living room floor just by the tv. She went over to it and picked it up. Kai threw a glance at it when she sat back down, and then glued his gaze on the screen. The brunette flipped through the pages, stopping every now and then to look closer at a photo. When she finished looking at his life in pictures, she turned and looked at him. He looked as distant as ever, but the crimson eyes were a bit red around the edges. She put a hand on his shoulder.
“You guys really loved each other, didn't you?” she said. “You never looked that affectionate around each other when you still lived here, so we were all wondering if you really were in love or just fb's. The engagement really caught us off guard.”
Kai didn't answer for a long time. Then he sighed and looked at her.
“Yes, we loved each other. And I still do. I love Tala with all my heart, but it's just not working out.”
She opened the album once more and looked at the picture with the sunset.
“When I look at these pictures, it's so hard to imagine all of that you told me. I believe you, it's not that. But it just seems so strange.”
Kai took the album, closed it and put it on the table.
“All of those pictures were taken between the fights. And between our arguments, things were wonderful. We always had fun together, did all kinds of stuff. We went on trips, or pulled pranks on each other and the rest of the guys, like we always have. We were, are, still the Abbey brats that are ill-behaved, loud, constantly bickering and loyal to each other until death. We all live together still, cause we don't want to live on our own. No one understands us but us. The only difference now was that me and Tala were lovers instead of best friends. He surprised me all the time with new books for my collection, or small gifts that were just sweet signs of love from him. Well, as sweet as it can be when Tala Ivanov is giving it. His idea of 'sweet and romantic' is a bit... spacy. And we could spend days together in bed. Not doing anything naughty, just enjoying each others company.” He smirked. “Though, the naughty stuff was great too.”
“I guess that was part of the problem?” Hilary asked. “Your relationship sounds like a roller-coaster to me. It's gotta have taken a huge toll on you.”
“It did. I was always on my toes, never really relaxing and just going with it. And Tala wasn't behind all of the fights. I have some issues with my temper as well, and sometimes I totally snapped. But the constant problem was his jealousy. I told him over and over that I would never do something like that to him. I don't want anyone else than him. But it was like talking to a rock.” He shut his mouth and looked at Hilary, his eyes narrowed. “For fucks sake, Hilary! Why do you always get me to talk? I don't do the whole 'I need to talk about all my love problems and want a shoulder to cry on'-thing.”
“You did need to talk about it,” she said simply. “And it helps me to forget my own mess.”
“”Your mess, Hil, he said. “Is a lot worse than mine. I can fight back, and I don't have a small child to keep out of harms way. I will help you clear it up.” He let out a low curse. “Fuck, if only Tyson hadn't been a stupid fucker and left you hanging like that! Miguel is a fucking vulture.”
“Yes,” she sighed. “He is. He managed to be there just at the right time, when I was hurt and confused. He treated me nicely, and before I knew it, I was living with him and having his child. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done. I don't even think that losing my virginity to you instead of Tyson, can add up to that.”
Kai gave a slightly self ironic chuckle.
“Yeah, not the smartest move either of us ever made,” he said. “I blame it on being 16, drunk and really confused about my sexuality. But something good came out of it. At least for me, 'cause I realized that I wasn't straight by a long shot. Lucky Tyson never found out about it, though.”
“Yeah. I just wish I knew why he left. He should be Melody's dad, not Miguel.” She smiled at him. “You have really become a whole new person, Kai. You're not at all the walking block of ice you used to be.”
“People change.”
“Some of them, at least.”
They were quiet for a while, just watching the movie and contemplating their complicated lives. Without looking at him, Hilary opened her mouth again.
“You know why I made you her godfather, even though Miguel hated it?”
“No.”
“Because he was as violent then as he is now. And I wanted to make sure that if anything happened to me, she would have someone I trusted to look after her. And you are the only one who could protect her from that monster that is her father. Rei was my second choice, but he is much softer than you, and a little afraid of conflicts. You never back down, and can raise hell if someone steps on your family or friends.”
“I am very honored to have that trust, Hilary. But I will make sure that nothing happens to you. I can help her in other ways. Like her schooling and stuff.”
“Shouldn't you do that to your own kids instead?”
“I'm never going to have my own kids, Hil,” he sighed. “First off, 'cause I'm gay. Second, cause I'm way too messed up. And to bring a child in to the hell that is my life would be a mortal sin. My past has left way too big a mark on me to ever make me fit to be a parent.”
“If you say so. But I think you'd make a great dad.”
Eventually Hilary got tired, and said goodnight. The scarlet glow of Dranzer was still visible through the chink under the door. The phoenix would keep them both safe until he called her back, just like she did every night for him when he was alone. It would be very hard to sleep tonight, but Hilary's little girl needed her more than he did right now. Sighing, he went out to the kitchen and, ignoring the mountain of dishes to be done, he poured himself a glass of whiskey. He emptied it, and immediately poured a new one. This one he took with him as he went to sit down on his favorite window seat, opening up the window and lighting a cigarette. It was stupid of him to take up smoking again, but he needed the momentary calm the white sticks could provide. Usually he would just get shitfaced or high and sleep for a few days when he felt depressed, but with a three year old little girl in the house, that was not an option. Tomorrow was Saturday, and he planned take his two fugitives out to get whatever stuff they needed. They couldn't go back to Hilary's house and get their things, because if Miguel walked through the door and found them there along with Kai, things would turn ugly in a heartbeat. Miguel hated Kai with the intensity of the very fires of hell. The phoenix couldn't help but snicker. One would always hate what one didn't understand, and what one feared. The pale blond man was afraid of the phoenix ever since he had stepped into a fight between him and Max. Kai's punch had sent him flying several feet and earned him a broken jaw and a concussion.
He sighed and took a final draft of the cigarette before putting it out. After emptying the glass, a low and nasty curse escaped his lips.
He had only been back in town for two damned weeks, and he was already involved in a really messy affair. Karma really held a grudge against him, and he couldn't for the life of him figure out why.
'You know what I love about you, Kai?' he heard Tala's voice in his head. 'You are a fighter. You never give up, no matter what. And as long as you don't, then I won't either.' The redhead had told him that a few months into their relationship, when he was struggling with one of his depressions and was drinking far too much and taking in substances that were not in any way legal to possess. Tala had taken away all his bottles and other 'medications' and stayed in bed with him, keeping him close and letting him cry all the pain out, until the darkness finally let go of him.
((You are my everything, Tala. You have always been, and you will always be. Why couldn't you understand that? Why did you make me leave you, and my heart, behind?))
The silent night gave no response. He went to bed, hoping that it would feel better in the morning. It never did, but hope was a stubborn bitch.
