Chapter One
The cluster of tall structures billowed opaque, black smoke, barely revealing a view of the rubble and twisted metal coating the ground below. Vegeta hovered in place several hundred meters above, using his scanner to verify the elimination of all life. The energy production center below had just been buzzing with activity, no doubt to fuel another feeble counterattack against unknown menace that kept dropping out of the sky and blowing everything to dust.
Vegeta almost felt contempt for this nameless species' inability to mount an effective defense. His normal ki shields had been sufficient to block their heaviest artillery, probably because of the ancient nature of their weapons. Unfortunately it was not the power level of the race that had warranted the dispatch of Vegeta for this job. Freeza had specifically ordered Vegeta to the large planet because of its importance and value: the expansive mining operations that dotted its primarily earthen surface were of great value and could not be destroyed along with their creators. It was up to Vegeta to efficiently carry out the task of cleansing the planet of its inhabitants and their dwellings while keeping some of their structures and technology intact. As much as he would have happily lost himself in the task, Vegeta did not have to pick off every member of the species. Instead, he had to merely eliminate most of the population along with the entirety of its armies to ensure that there were no means of large-scale retaliation. After he had covered the surface area of the planet, the first waves of Freeza's ground troops would be able to make their sweeps. By the time the clean-up crew would be able to clear the debris and the scientists moved in to the mining stations to restart production, Vegeta saw himself on another distant planet, destroying another nameless, expendable race.
Considering his current location clean, Vegeta blasted forward towards the next group of yellow buildings. They were not far, as they were where the workers for the mining plant had once lived. Like many of the other dwellings Vegeta had visited since the first days of his mission, this one was empty. Vegeta used repeated ki blasts to level the tall, hive-like homes before pushing onward. He had to find where the inhabitants had set up camp in their attempt to escape massacre.
Vegeta did not simply revel in his status as a Saiyajin elite nor in his special birthright as the prince of his race. He took deep pride in his fighting, in his ability to master another race through intelligence, ruthlessness, and unforgiving force. The fact that he was doing so because of a direct command from a much more powerful overlord remained an inconvenient reality, but one that was made more palatable by his elevated status and the special treatment he received under Freeza. Vegeta smiled mischievously as he recalled the way Zarbon and Dodoria treated him with derision because of Freeza's interest in him. They never seemed to grasp the depth of Freeza and Vegeta's bond, and were in a continuous state of shock and tentative acceptance whenever Freeza demonstrated any leniency or favoritism towards Vegeta. Even Freeza’s special troops, including the lowly Guldo, insulted him in their ruler’s absence. Vegeta always knew that the source of their hostility was jealousy for the very thing that fueled Freeza's interest: Vegeta's unimaginable potential. Though he hadn't voiced it to anyone but Nappa, and only at an early age, he always assumed that the legendary Super Saiyajin was going to manifest through his personal excellence. It was what his father had groomed him for and it had become all but certain based on the trajectory of his progress. Supremacy was his destiny, and even powerful beings like Freeza seemed to know it.
For now, Vegeta knew that he had to swallow Freeza's dominance, but he accepted it with the intention to emulate Freeza's power. Vegeta rose every day to the steady drumming of a mantra that told him that he would one day be like Freeza: not just a cruel fighter, but a powerful ruler. In a way, he was thankful to Freeza. What had once been confused, childish resistance to being taken from his people had evolved into an appreciation for being exposed to greater possibilities than he could have imagined at his father's side. Besides, most of the Saiyajin were dead. From his current status to his absence when Vegetasei had been destroyed by asteroids, Vegeta had Freeza to thank.
Vegeta's scanner beeped rapidly as he approached a small mountain range rising out of the otherwise monotonous landscape. Knowing that there were no mining operations here for the lack of equipment, Vegeta concluded it was the hiding place of his intended victims and set about leveling the tall rocks. Within seconds, several large ki blasts left only burnt boulders. The sun of the planet radiated a relentless heat as he assessed his overall progress across the planet by cross referencing the specifications of the mission with his scanner's log. It was his fifth day on the desert-like planet, and he had almost completed the mission with more than a week to spare. Vegeta felt a new wave of pride as he released a large surge of ki to race towards the final group of cities. He pulled out the control for his transportation pod and set the ship to rendezvous with him about 20 kilometers away from his destination. It wouldn't take long for him to wipe the last large group of this race off of their planet, and he would want to make a prompt return to Freeza's presence to bask in victory.
**** After Vegeta completed the remainder of his mission without incident, he flew back to his stationary capsule and climbed into the padded interior. The climate-controlled sterility was refreshing after several long, destructive days without sleep. Falling into his seat and allowing himself to acknowledge his expended energy, he closed the capsule and set its course for Freeza Planet #43, where Freeza was delegating from one of the largest Planet Trade Organization headquarters.Vegeta had restrained himself from revealing much of his accelerated progress while he had ravaged the target planet, but now he could report back to Freeza about his imminent return with confidence. Using the scouter to send a signal to Freeza's location, Vegeta hoped that Freeza would see the source of the message and receive it directly. Instead, he was routed to a communications underling from Freeza's headquarters.
"Vegeta-sama, we have received your signal." The voice sounded flustered. Vegeta smiled with satisfaction from eliciting a nervous response from a lower-ranked comrade.
"Tell Freeza-sama that Vegeta-sama has completed his mission and will be returning," Vegeta spoke with a boastfully casual tone, stretching his arms above his head and settling further into his seat.
"You are making your return now?" The voice had become startled, maybe skeptical. Vegeta clenched his teeth as he thought about how Zarbon and Dodoria always expressed disbelief that he could handle missions that required timely completion or finesse.
"Correct," he snapped, momentarily agitated. There was a stiff silence.
"Anything more, Vegeta-sama?" The voice was now cautious. Vegeta paused, contemplating.
"See that Freeza-sama remembers that the completion is eight days ahead of schedule," Vegeta let his frustration at being given unnecessarily lenient deadlines permeate his words.
"Y-yes, Vegeta-sama," the voice affirmed, again startled.
"That is all." Vegeta ended the correspondence with the push of a button. He switched his attention to the pod's controls, and calculated his return time: two long weeks. Using the same pad, he set the stasis controls, the image of Freeza's pleased smile drifting up through his mind as he fell into a welcome state of unconsciousness.
****Vegeta was pulled out of stasis shortly before the pod initiated its landing process. The familiar labyrinth-like white and purple structures loomed with increasing size beneath him as the pod descended quickly toward the main docking area. His scouter began to hum with the increased chatter of the thousands of scouters scattered across the base, prompting him to lower the sensitivity level to pare the incoming signals down to those coming from the main control and emergency centers.
After the pod came to a rest and its door opened, Vegeta rose from his seat and exited, walking only a few steps forward before he was approached by a group of high-rank officials. One stepped forward, standing several heads taller than Vegeta, and stated, "Welcome back, Vegeta-sama. We are here to escort you to Freeza-sama's command center. I can take your scouter.” Vegeta removed the device and dropped it into the official’s upturned hand. "Freeza-sama ordered that we be briefed on any special information from your mission," he continued, handing off Vegeta's scouter to a specialist to be taken for data collection and servicing. Vegeta nodded in acknowledgement, pleased that his travel time had brought him to his destination in the middle of the day's normal operations.
The group walked briskly across the dock and into the interior of the base. Vegeta inquired briefly about Nappa and Raditz's whereabouts, and was informed that they were still accompanying troops elsewhere. As they made their way through the long, wide corridors, Vegeta summarized his encounters with his victims, recounting their battle strategies and architectural oddities. He was just finishing his description of the condition of the mining plants as they walked past the buzzing monitors of the control center and reached the entrance to Freeza's control room. One of the two guards outside of it activated the door and it slid open, allowing Vegeta to slip inside. Vegeta left the group of officials behind to realize in their own time that he had completed his report.
The control room had a less open layout than the general control center and no bulging window to the outside world. It was still covered in humming monitors, switching their views in cycles as the large computer systems received data from across the galaxy. It was here that the data would then be compiled into reports for the technicians to evaluate and summarize for Freeza. The stations were empty, but Vegeta thought nothing of it as he strode towards the side of the room which Freeza usually occupied.
To Vegeta's surprise, Freeza was standing instead of reclining in his hover chair, facing him expectantly as he approached. As Vegeta came closer, he noticed that there were a number of soldiers and what appeared to be medics standing on either side of Freeza, also facing him in expectant silence as he approached. Vegeta thought that perhaps he had interrupted a meeting between Freeza and these minions, and gloried momentarily in having a larger audience for his triumphant report.
When Vegeta was within a couple of meters of Freeza, he knelt onto one knee and bowed his head.
"Freeza-sama, I have completed my mission," he stated coolly, smiling privately to himself under the cover of his large, erect hair. Vegeta did not have time to look up and see the pink and purple tail come down on the back of his head, but its impact knocked him unconscious before his forehead hit the cold floor.
