In the Midst of War

“Fullmetal! Send those troops to the damn front line!” Roy commanded over the noise of bombs and bullets hitting in every direction. A loud boom was heard nearby, causing Roy to cringe. Edward waved over the first line of troops, signaling for the second and third lines to step up as well. Their territory was being overrun by Drachma and god only knew who they recruited. “Seems like we are falling behind again Fullmetal.” Roy said as he pondered back and forth, catching glimpses of the nearer troops as new blood was being shed. Roy put both hands behind his back and then stood in one place.

“Roy you know these damn soldiers aren’t going to cut through. We are weak in our defenses.” Edward proclaimed as he stood beside Roy.

“That is Colonel Mustang to you.” Roy shot back, only to lean down to the twenty-one year old’s ear “have to keep my image Ed. You know orders are orders.”

Edward nodded his approval and looked into the deep coal eyes. Notions of war stood within the wild eyes of the military born Mustang. It had only been a few months since they both entered war and both were sick of it. The Fullmetal Alchemist was showing promise now. Finally standing at a good height of 5’9” and twenty-one years old. Edward stood proud, right beside his husband.

Roy turned his back for a moment to call over Riza, only to stop all motion in contact. His arms froze and his legs went stiff. He had been shot in the back and all Edward could do was stand in shock before running to his husband’s side. Edward flipped Roy over to see if any real harmful damage had been done and regretted when he looked. Right by where the Colonel’s heart is was a hole. Edward got up and yelled for Riza and in a flash, she sprinted over and kneeled next to the wounded Colonel. Edward had took off to the nearest tent and had the paramedics out immediately. Soon Roy was lifted onto the stretcher.

Before everything had gone black, the last thing Roy saw was his husband’s face. Tears falling on his military uniform, his hands covered in blood. The screaming and sobbing of both Edward and Riza. Soon Roy let the pain take him into a fierce pained sleep.

Riza gripped Edward’s shoulder while he stood in place. The Major General looking among his officers. “One of our Colonels have fallen, but is placed in extensive care. Seeing as it is with the low possibility of Colonel Mustang coming back into commission anytime soon, I leave the troops in care of,” Hakuro rested his face in his hand a brief second before looking up, “Maes Hughes. In second command beside him, Major Elric. The rest of you, move out. I want to see some improvement here!” Hakuro saluted the troops before turning his back to go back into one of the strategy tents.

Hughes looked down at Edward before smiling his goofy grin. Edward groaned at the idea of Maes being in charge, but what the hell, it could have been worse. Riza could be in charge, then they would be fucking doomed. “Ed don’t lose yourself out there. I know Roy is dear to you, but deal with it until everything is settled. Besides. Having a shrimp at my side isn’t such a bad idea.” Hughes smirked before running to Riza’s side to give her detailed plans.

Hakuro once again was pouring over the maps as one sigh after another was let out. Who was he kidding, Hughes would never be able to support his troops, let alone being in the midst of war. He could possibly count on Hawkeye to keep Hughes straight but that still left Fullmetal. Hakuro placed his face in his hands, without Mustang there, Fullmetal was like a stray bullet just begging to hit someone. With Mustang out of commission, this was going to be one hell of a day.

“Tell Lieutenant Colonel Hughes to send in the rest of the troops including himself,” Hakuro commanded the soldier standing next to him.

The soldier saluted but stood rooted to the spot. “Sir, one question. Won’t that eliminate the rest of our battalion?”

“Exactly, that way the war will be over with and I can go home and rest easy.” Hakuro glared at the soldier.

The soldier saluted once more and sprinted out of the strategy tent. He ran to Hughes and told the plans. Hughes’ jaw dropped and looked at Edward. “Fullmetal, send in the rest of the troops. The Major General commands as such. I must go as well my friend. See ya around shrimp!” With that Hughes went to the front line with the rest.

Edward nodded and did as he was told. “You heard the Lieutenant Colonel! Move out!”

Edward watched as the many soldiers started marching and each one falling like the next. He could only shake his head. ‘What is that bastard Hakuro trying to do? Get us all killed for a holiday after this shit?’

6 months later….

Roy had been on leave for quite some time now. The Major General refusing to let him go back into the war. The wound left right at his heart was healing nicely. The doctors had gotten the bullet out in time and had stopped the bleeding. But one thing stayed on his mind constantly, Edward.

Edward was left to defend himself in the war. Sure he had Hawkeye and Hughes, but what if something had happened to either one. Doubting Riza would go down that easily. Riza was like a mother figure to Edward and wouldn’t let him get hurt. Roy shook his head to let himself back into reality. He looked around the hospital, getting tired of watching white wall after white wall pass by. One of the nurses had came in and gotten him from his room to take him to the examination hall. Great, just great, another white room. Roy groaned when he found himself face to face with the doctor.

He constantly had cold hands and that damned stethoscope felt like it had been on ice for hours. “Well hello Mustang, nice to see you this afternoon. Feeling any better?”

Again with the damned stupid questions. Hell no he was feeling better and yes this was driving him nuts. He gritted his teeth and answered. “I suppose I am.”

The doctor scribbled on his notepad and continued. “I need you to untie your dressing and let me inspect the wound.”

Roy reached to his back with his good arm and let the dressing fall to his lap. He shivered at the cold air that wafted across his bare chest. The doctor put the stethoscope to his chest and listened to the steady heart rate. The doctor nodded in approval and scribbled once more. He then looked at Roy’s chest and peeled back the gauze and bandaging. The wound was healing very nicely and he scribbled on the notepad one last time before replacing the gauze and bandages. “I’ll have the nurse change your bandages one last time before you go home.”

Roy shook the doctor’s hand and smiled. He got to go home today and relax there. He went back to his assigned hospital room and the nurse changed his bandages quickly. She bid him a good day and he got dressed quickly before rushing to the front desk. His freedom almost a door a way. He handed the woman his papers and she checked them. She nodded and he went out of the doors and back into the fresh air. No more hospital and damned doctors trying to feed you crappy food. Thanking gods that his home was just a few blocks away. He set off towards home on foot, just thinking if Edward was okay.

Two months later on the battle ground…

Fires had sprung up everywhere and it seemed never ending. The musky stench of dead bodies and blood hanging in the reddened sky above. War seemed to never cease as bullets whizzed overhead and the sounds of booms everywhere. His men were losing their lives due to territory being fought over. Edward thought it stupid to fight over land, but that didn’t stop the on slaughter. Hughes had disappeared from the battle grounds. Hopefully Hughes would be okay and back home when he got there.

Edward grabbed at his shoulder as a newly formed wound bled freely. He searched thoroughly through the medical bag for any cloth to stop the wound from bleeding profusely, but had no such luck. Edward stuck his head over the trench before realizing that half his men were gone. Either dead or possible POW, he didn’t know. He looked around as another bullet whizzed by, in hoping that a soldier would spot him and inform one of the commanding officers about him. If he didn’t get help soon, he would have to do something, anything, to keep the life inside of him safe. Edward got up and spotted a nearby coat and tore the sleeve off of it and wrapped it securely around the wound. Noticing as one of the soldiers approached him.

“Major Elric, what should we do know sir?” The soldier looked a bit shaken as he saluted.

Edward returned the salute. “Judging by the death rate, a retreat may be in order. I’m leaving the First Lieutenant Hawkeye in charge because I have to take leave.”

The soldier saluted and ran off to find the First Lieutenant Hawkeye to tell him of the retreat. Edward took this as a chance to start heading south and back to Central. Edward knew that if he didn’t make it within a day’s time, he would die or be near death. So with that, he headed to the train station and back home.
