Chapter Two - Questions
With his left arm held high and his right protectively around his stomach, his tail now wrapped around his waist and his back as straight as possible, Kakarott stood, frozen in place.
Vegeta gasped.
'What the fuck...'
Vegeta couldn't remember the last time he had been so alarmed, yet confused at the same time - if ever. Something about the way Kakarott was standing stirred within his blood, but he had no idea why. Try as he might, he was powerless to avert his eyes - the feeling didn't sit well with him one bit; it left him angry, confused... and frustrated.
He needed time to think - a day, an hour, anything to figure out what the hell was going on. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't going to get anything beyond a few seconds. As soon as Kakarott released his stance and began his journey home, he stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face him. Smiling, he called over to him.
"Mornin', Vegeta!"
Vegeta continued to stare at the younger Saiyan as he walked over to join him in the shade. Kakarott's body-language had changed entirely from the state he had seen not five minutes earlier. Gone were the focus, ferocity and abnormal strength and agility - replaced with the grinning insult to the Saiyan race he'd been forced to tolerate for Gods knew how long. Vegeta couldn't understand what Kakarott was doing, but he intended to find out.
"I thought you were sparring," Vegeta lied, still watching Kakarott as he stopped just short of the shade of the trees. He refused to meet the grin on the tall Saiyan's face, leaving his eyes no place to wander but over his defined body, gazing over the shining muscles before him, watching as beads of sweat dripped from burning skin.
"Huh? Nah, just out here for some morning stretches!" Kakarott leaned against the tree Vegeta had been standing behind and let his tail slip lazily from his waist. The sudden change in his demeanor annoyed Vegeta - smiling and acting all casual, as though today was just another ordinary day. Kakarott was up to something; he was sure of it.
"You call that 'morning stretches'?" Vegeta raised one eyebrow at the sweaty Saiyan in front of him while desperately trying not to flinch from the heavy scent of his rival. Kakarott's musk was driving his senses wild and causing his body react in betrayal - now more severely as he stood so close to its source. However, it wasn't anything like what he'd sensed a few minutes prior. The raw determination and thirst for power should have been overwhelming this close to Kakarott. Instead, all that remained was his usual seductive earthy scent, much lighter, but still as potent - which Vegeta didn't necessarily mind. "It looked like a little more than stretches, Kakarott," Vegeta added quietly.
Goku continued to smile as he pushed his hair up out of his eyes, intrigued that Vegeta had been watching him. "Yeah? Well, it wasn't much," he said, gazing upon the prince while completely ignoring the accusation in Vegeta's eyes.
Vegeta's eyes narrowed in annoyance. "Don't toy with me, Kakarott," he snapped. "Where did you learn that stance?"
"Which one?" Goku asked, grinning as he gazed over the broad chest of the Saiyan prince, taking note of the hardened nipples Vegeta was attempting to hide behind his crossed arms. He always suspected an ulterior motive behind Vegeta's preference for extra tight clothing stretching intimately over his defined muscles. He swore the prince wore them on purpose just to show off.
"What do you mean, 'which one'? The one you finished with!" Vegeta growled. He glared at Kakarott, barely believing he shared racial genetics with someone who left their brain in bed on a daily basis. How could he not know what stances he was holding just two minutes ago?
'Fucking idiot! Wait... what if he IS toying with me? No, he wouldn't dare! I'm the Prince of all...' His eyes widened as the scowl on his face intensified. 'What the fuck was with that look? ...Did he just...?'
Goku gave Vegeta a puzzled look, reaching to scratch the back of his head as he shifted into a sly grin. He could tell Vegeta wasn't in the mood for games, but he had no idea what he was going on about.
"What's so important about my stances? You've seen them all a million times..." His voice trailed off as he eyed the bronzed curves of Vegeta's neck - the definition in his body was impressive to say the least. When he pulled his eyes back to meet Vegeta's, he almost gulped - the glare from Vegeta's deep blue eyes would have made a lesser man cower in fear. "Alright, Vegeta. Come out here where there's more room to move."
Vegeta raised an eyebrow as the younger Saiyan motioned with his tail for him to follow out into the clearing. He followed at his own pace, his senses heightened as he attempted to study Kakarott in every detail: the flexing of his thick muscles along his broad shoulders, the patterns his tail drew as it lazed behind him, even the way Kakarott's bare feet barely left a mark in the grass. And on top of all he could see, his nose was being assaulted Kakarott's teasing, intoxicating scent. He couldn't rid his senses of it, no matter how far he hung back from the taller Saiyan.
Vegeta narrowed his eyes on the base of the tail moving in front of him.
'What the fuck... is he doing that on purpose?'
Suspicion overwhelmed him - nothing was normal about the younger Saiyan right now.
As Goku stopped in the middle of the clearing, he turned to see Vegeta standing a few feet away, his arms stretched above his head as he cracked his neck to one side. The intensity in Vegeta's face was stirring confusion within him - just what was Vegeta on about? Deciding it was best to indulge the prince, Goku shrugged off any second thoughts as his face relaxed into a smile.
"Okay, Vegeta. I usually start off in a defensive stance like this," Goku explained as he planted his feet firmly into the ground. Spreading his legs a tiny bit while bringing his arms up and extending them forward, he stood with his hands at eye level. Goku quietly grunted as he focused his ki to reinforce his flexed muscles, as if preparing for an attack. "Then, I move into a full block, like this." Goku brought his arms closer to his face and leaned forward, clenching his fists.
Vegeta stared at him, feeling the annoyance tip-toe up his spine. Was he joking? Was he doing this on purpose? Where were the attacks he'd just seen? Vegeta narrowed his eyes at the younger Saiyan, wondering just what he was up to with this charade. Was he working on those new techniques to use against him one day?
"Enough with the games, Kakarott - I know how to block an attack. Show me the stance you were using." Vegeta's voice was as quiet and calm as he could muster under his growing annoyance.
Goku released his block and stood normally, gazing into Vegeta's eyes as though it might help him figure out what the prince wanted to see. He could easily see his own reflection staring back at him from those blue eyes, the sight suddenly making him feel very naked in front of the older Saiyan.
Goku tore his gaze away. Vegeta obviously wasn't interested in blocks - maybe he meant an offensive stance?
"Alright, is this the one you're talking about?" Goku replied as he placed his left leg out in front of him. Steadying his weight between his two tree-trunk legs, Goku crouched into a striking pose, his arms bowed out in front of him. Looking to Vegeta for approval, he received nothing but an annoyed frown and a shaking head.
"Stop stalling, Kakarott. You know what I'm talking about. Show me!" He'd kept calm for long enough - Kakarott was toying with him, he was almost certain. If Kakarott kept this up for much longer, he would beat the stance out of him - or force him to use it.
Goku stood slowly, feeling the worry mar his face. What did Vegeta want to see? He didn't understand - Vegeta was growing angrier by the minute and he had no idea how to stop it. He hated seeing Vegeta angry - anger didn't suit him, no matter what anyone said or thought of him. But which stance was he talking about? He considered virtually every offensive stance he could think of, until he came to one he'd hoped he'd forgotten.
'That one...' Goku silently cursed his mind for still remembering. He groaned. "Uh, okay, Vegeta. I sometimes use this stance when I'm alone - I don't really like to use it around others..." Goku's voice trailed off quietly as Vegeta's eyes widened.
Vegeta felt a wave of relief wash over him. Finally! Kakarott was done with his stupid game... Vegeta needed to see that stance again - needed to know where it had come from, and more importantly, where he'd seen it before.
"Promise not to laugh at me, okay?"
"Hnn." Vegeta inclined his head slightly, willing to agree to anything to see that stance again.
"Alright... here goes..." Goku hated holding this stance in front of others. The only person who had ever seen it before was Chichi, and she had virtually been in tears from laughing so hard at the sight. She said he looked like a person named 'Peter -' something, and then resumed her manic laughter. He hadn't been that embarrassed in years. And now here he was, about to do it again, in front of the only other living full-blooded Saiyan he knew of. Any chance of gaining Vegeta's respect was about to disappear for all eternity. He would never let him hear the end of this...
With a deep sigh, Goku stood as straight as he could. Vegeta's stare could have burned holes through his body had he added any ki to his gaze - Goku could tell this was important to him. He brought his legs together and made sure his feet were touching. Bringing his left arm up, he extended it skyward, flexing his fingers.
Vegeta began to feel his heart beat in his chest, his anticipation growing with every passing second. His intense gaze quickly turned into an angry scowl as he watched Kakarott's right foot leave the ground.
Goku could feel the embarrassment dance along his spine as he lifted his right leg off the ground, and placed his foot flat against his left knee. Straining to keep his eyes closed, mortified of the look he was sure Vegeta was giving him, he held his embarrassing stance as he placed his right arm on his hip.
Goku was sure his face was burning bright red as he stood there, waiting for his ears to be assaulted by loud, bellowing Saiyan laughter. He couldn't believe he was doing this - holding this stance he had developed as a joke. Vegeta was probably taking as many mental pictures as he could - there was no way the older Saiyan would ever let him forget this.
Seconds had ticked by and Goku had yet to hear a sound from Vegeta. He gathered what nerve he had left and opened one eye to peek at the prince. Peering through his damp lashes, Goku didn't see the laughing Saiyan he had expected. Instead, he saw a very angry one, his brow curved downwards between his staring eyes.
"Enough!!" Vegeta's shout startled Goku out of his ridiculous stance, almost causing him to lose his balance and fall backward. "What the hell are you doing, Kakarott?"
Kakarott's face quickly dropped into a worried stare. But there was something in his eyes... he was hiding something, Vegeta was sure of it.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Vegeta!" Kakarott snapped.
Vegeta let out his breath in an angry hiss, curling his right hand into a tight fist. He knew it. Kakarott was hiding something. He would have to beat it out of him after all...
He took a step closer to the worried Saiyan, his eyes flashing green. "Why must you insist on playing games?" He focused upon the younger face as he took another step, well aware of the impact his anger was having. "You know what I'm talking about - you were performing those techniques five minutes ago." Yet another step. "If you don't want to show me your new techniques..." Vegeta stood one step closer, his face twisted in a deadly smirk. "I'll make you."
"Godsdamnit, Vegeta!" Goku was hurt - he put his hands up to try to get Vegeta to calm down. It was bad enough Vegeta was pissed off with him over nothing, but Goku didn't want to be nursing broken bones or ki burns for the rest of the day as well. "What the hell are you talking about? What new techniques!?"
"The ones I saw you using! Before you stopped to go home, you finished with your hands in the air and your head bowed!" Vegeta shouted, irritated by the angst in Kakarott's voice.
Goku was shocked at what he heard. Vegeta had obviously seen something, something which he might have done without giving a second thought - but what? All he had been doing was his normal morning routines... What made them suddenly so special?
"I... I don't..." Goku stammered as Vegeta took another step towards him, their bodies now mere inches apart. Vegeta's eyes widened as he heard the confusion in Kakarott's voice. For all his faults, Kakarott rarely sounded this confused - perhaps the idiot wasn't hiding all that he thought.
"You don't remember what you were doing?" Vegeta almost laughed at the thought. A Saiyan who couldn't remember what he was doing fifteen minutes prior? If he wasn't so pissed, he would have laughed in his face.
Goku scoffed nervously as he wrestled with his mind, clawing for some sort of reply. "What? O-of course I do!"
"Bullshit!"
"Damn it, Vegeta! What the hell are you talking about? Who would want to stand still with their hands in the air with their head bowed? It makes no sense! What, you want to leave yourself wide open for attack?"
"Don't give me that shit, Kakarott - I'm not fucking blind! I saw you do it!"
Goku's eyes widened as he felt his heart drop. "But - th... that's not... possible..." He could tell Vegeta noticed the sudden change in his expression, but it only seemed to make him more furious. How - how was that possible? How could he have been doing something five minutes ago and not remember? There was no way he could have been doing something like that - but... Vegeta had seen him do it...
Goku's lips slowly parted as he struggled to make a sound, his frustration instantly transformed back into confusion - and fear.
"Vegeta..." The sound barely escaped his throat, forcing the prince to lean closer just to hear him. "Sh... show me."
Vegeta stared deeply into the eyes of the Saiyan before him, reading the worry swimming within the liquid brown. Gazing over his sweaty body, he could see how his broad shoulders slumped into the pathetic look of the defeated. All the signs pointed to Kakarott's sincerity, but Vegeta wouldn't take any chances.
"If this is another godsdamned game..." Vegeta muttered under his breath, the sound lost amidst the gentle breeze. If he pushed Kakarott any further, he might never see that stance again - and he refused to accept that. Seething, he lessened his hardened glare, letting go of any outward expression of anger.
"Show you what, Kakarott?" Vegeta breathed, their faces mere inches apart. Vegeta could feel the heat of Kakarott's body wash over him, his sweaty musk and hot breathing making Vegeta's heartbeat rise and chest heave.
"Show me what you saw."
Goku's voice was flat and quiet, barely above a whisper. The defeat in his voice was unmistakable - this was no game. Vegeta nodded and took a step back, flexing his arms in preparation.
Goku stood silent as he watched the prince stand proudly before him, the contours of his body highlighted in the sunlight. His stare intensified as Vegeta brought his legs together, making sure to wrap his tail around his waist. Raising his arms, Vegeta extended his left straight into the sky while wrapping his right protectively around his protruding abdominal muscles. Refusing to show any weakness, Vegeta remained motionless as he closed his eyes and dropped his head, his chin resting upon his hardened chest.
Goku was speechless.
