Chapter 3 - Secrets

“Can one of you guys go get Duo? Dinner’s nearly done.” Quatre called from the kitchen. Heero nodded and got up from his place on the sofa. He took the stairs two at a time, quickly reaching the American’s room. He tapped gently on it and opened the door. Duo had left the lock off. The sight that met his eyes made Heero do something he very rarely did. He smiled. He looked down at the peacefully sleeping Duo. His braid was lying over his shoulder. One hand was tucked under the pillow; the other was grabbing it like a security blanket. His entire face was calm and relaxed. His steady breathing was the only sound in the room. Heero was suddenly reminded of the fifteen year old he used to know.

He knelt down beside the bed, just looking at the sleeping figure. He raised his hand and brushed away some of the errant bangs that covered the sleeper’s face. He had never seen Duo like this. There was never time in the war for decent sleep. They had always been on edge in case they were attacked. Now they could sleep easy. It warmed his heart to see Duo without his grinning mask. He looked so… helpless. It made Heero feel protective all of a sudden. He sighed deeply. He looked at the door and seeing no one there, bent over Duo and kissed his cheek.

“I missed you.” He whispered. He stood again, gazed down one last time, and then turned to leave the room. “Rest well, sleeping beauty.” He closed the door. A single tear escaped from the closed eyes.

“He’s fast asleep. I didn’t want to wake him.” Heero walked back down the stairs. Quatre was bringing in plates full of food.

“I’ll put him a plate up, in case he wakes up later.” The blonde said with a smile. Heero nodded. He sat at the table with the others. While he ate, he kept throwing glances up to the shut door and when he wasn’t, he was still thinking about the braided one. It was normal that Heero was quiet, so Quatre and Wufei didn’t notice anything unusual, however, Trowa also known for being the silent type, could tell instantly that something was on the Japanese man’s mind. He made a mental note to talk to Heero about it later.

After dinner, Trowa helped Quatre tidy up. Wufei went to his room to meditate. Heero snuck out to the pool and stood looking beyond the black netting into the night sky but focused on nothing. He stood with his hands in his pockets, remaining silent.

“Tell.” He didn’t even jump when he heard Trowa’s voice behind him. Trowa stood beside him and looked out into the dark. Heero said nothing. “You can’t hide everything Heero.” The Japanese man gave a short sigh.

“Guess I can’t hide anything from you, Trowa.” He gave a slight half smile. “It’s kind of ironic. I don’t say anything, yet you seem to know that I’m almost screaming.” The Latin looked down at the man beside him.

“It takes one to know one. Come on, tell me.” Heero ran a hand through his thick bangs and let them fall back into his eyes.

“Duo.” Trowa smiled but said nothing. “I guess I missed him. As frustrating and annoying as he is, I missed that, I missed his continual yapping. I thought I’d got over him, but seeing him again. It made me even more certain.” Trowa looked at him curiously with one emerald eye.

“What of?” Heero turned to look at his friend and found he couldn’t say. Trowa patiently waited. Heero ran his hand through his bangs again, a nervous gesture. Trowa couldn’t remember Heero Yuy ever looking nervous.

“Everything about him, his pale skin even though he’s got a good tan now, his stupid smile, his amazing eyes, his beautiful hair… Trowa when did you know about Quatre, about how you felt about him?” Trowa looked into the blackness again.

“I’m not sure; I just woke up one day and knew. I could feel it here,” He put his hand over his heart, “When I realised I couldn’t be without him. The thought that it would hurt just for us to be apart.”

“I love him Trowa.” Heero’s face was blank as always but his eyes shone more than usual, even in the darkness. Trowa wasn’t surprised at this revelation. “Now I just don’t know what to do about it.” The Latin turned and faced the Japanese man.

“What do your emotions tell you? What does your heart tell you?” Heero looked down and sighed. “Talk to him Heero.”

“What if he…”

“Talk.” The taller man squeezed his shoulders then walked away, leaving Heero to turn back to face the night again. ‘Talking’, how ironic, the one thing he wasn’t good at.

He knew a sound had woken him but as his mind slipped slowly from sleep, he realised that he didn’t know what it was. He opened his eyes and slowed his breathing. It was completely dark but gradually his eyes managed to pick out objects in the room. Trowa’s gentle breathing was a gentle sound beside him. The Latin was still fast asleep. His slim frame, a warm comfort alongside the Arabian. Quatre smiled at the thought of his lover. He was just about to turn over and snuggle up to Trowa when he heard it again. There had been a definite…splash. Quatre frowned, why a splash? He looked to Trowa, and then carefully got out of bed, so as not to wake him. The Latin must have felt him leave, as he turned over and nuzzled into Quatre’s pillow. Quatre smiled again. He silently padded over to the chest of drawers where he had left his clothes.

He slid on a pair of boxer shorts and grabbed his pistol from the top. He had learned a few things off of Heero. Always carry some weapon with you, as you never know who will try to kill a Gundam pilot. Quatre had agreed with the philosophy but didn’t want anything too flashy. A small pistol, he decided, he could fit in his brief case or on his person if need be. No matter what size it was, it was still a deadly weapon in a Gundam pilot’s hands. Many people could easily forget that the blonde had been a pilot, making him a potentially easy target. More fool them, Quatre thought.

He crept out of his room and looked about. There was no sign of life anywhere; all of the bedroom doors were shut. He stuck close to the walls as he looked around from the stairs. Still nothing. ‘Splash’! It was a gentle noise but it was loud enough for his sensitive ears. It came from the pool. He gave another look around, and then noiselessly descended the stairs. As he reached the dining table he took the safety off his gun. Whoever or whatever was here, it was in the pool. The sliding doors were open enough for a man to slip through easily but he could see nothing. He carefully padded forward. Movement caught his eye but it was too quick for him to see what it was. There was no need for lights, the moon filtered its cool beams steadily through the netting, it made the whole place glow, it was ethereal. He tiptoed his way right to the pool’s edge, cocking his pistol only to nearly drop it. He gasped loudly and put his hand over his mouth. He couldn’t believe what was before him. He rubbed his eyes, and then pinched himself just to make sure.

Duo was swimming in the pool. His eyes were closed as he floated on his back, gently skimming through the water. A content smile was across his lips. But there was one definite physical difference that was not a part of the usual image. Duo had a tail! Instead of his long, lean legs there was an elegant fish tail. The fins broke the water then splashed back down again. It was this that had made the noise that had awoken Quatre. The blonde watched almost hypnotised, as the tail gracefully flicked up once more. His voice caught in his throat and he only managed a slight gurgling. It was enough to distract the swimmer. Bright purple eyes snapped open and looked at the blonde in terror.
