Kai sat on the window seat, busy with two things; smoking and melting. It was a scorching hot day, and there were no clouds to block out the vicious rays of the sun. He had forgotten how hot the summer season was here. Though it was late august now, the temperature was just ridiculous. Far below him on the street, people were walking in the lightest clothes they could dig out from their closets – and judging by their slow pace, they were busy melting too. He had been up since dawn, when it had just become impossible to stay in bed. One, because it was too damn hot and he felt like he was sweating out every bit of fluid in him, and two, because he just couldn't bare to dream another dream. A certain redheaded man occupied not only his thoughts, but his dreams as well. He often woke up in tears, the pain clawing away at his inside and the darkness starting to creep over his vision. So he had gotten up, and spent half an hour in the shower to try cooling down his system before he overheated. And now he was sitting here, after four cups of coffee, and tried to figure out what to do that would prevent him from evaporating.
Steps came from the room opposite to the kitchen, and Hilary appeared, fanning her face with her hand. She gave a little smile when he took a final draft and put the cigarette out. He tried not to smoke near Melody. And the little girl was never far behind her mother. Sure enough, small steps came across the floor, and a small girl threw herself in his arms.
“Good morning, Kai!” Melody cheered. “It's Sunday today!”
“Hey, Mel,” he smiled and gently pried her thin arms off his neck. Small as she was, she could have made a good boa constrictor. “Hn, it's Sunday. What do you want to do today?”
“Beach!” Her big blue eyes were shining. “Mommy said ok if you go too!”
Kai looked at Hilary for some confirmation. She nodded.
“It's too hot,” she said. “Melody doesn't handle heat that well. And she loves the beach.”
“Then I guess we're going to the beach,” he established. “God knows I'm ready to bury myself in a glacier if it can provide some cool.” He gently got loose from Melody's unintentional strangling grip around his neck. “Go get changed, Mel,” he smiled. “We're leaving in fifteen.”
“Yay!” She hopped off his lap and ran to their room. Hilary looked at her excited little child and smiled. Kai got up and stretched his back.
“Good thing we bought her a swimsuit yesterday,” he said. “Well, I'll go see where my shorts have gone. I know I have them with me, but my clothes have the tendency to go into hiding when I'm looking for a particular garment.”
The beach was, as they suspected, packed with people. Kai sighed inwardly, but let himself get dragged along by Melody to a spot about halfway between the parking lot and the water. Hilary spread a large blanket out on the sand and put the towels and basket of drinks and snacks down. Kai gave a lopsided smile.
“I meant to carry those,” he said apologetically. “But I was dragged off against my will.”
“It's ok,” she chuckled. “You'll carry them and Melody back to the car.”
“Ouch. All of them? Oh well.” He sat down on the blanket and took a quick look around. People threw glances at them and whispered to each other. He could almost hear it. 'Is that Kai from the Bladebreakers? Oh my God, what is he doing here?' He smirked to himself. A light voice to his right brought him out of his thoughts.
“But mommy, I wanna go in the water!”
“Not until you have let me put the sunblock on you!” Hilary said and struggled to apply the protective creme to her wriggling daughter's skin. “Stay still!”
The girl frowned and kept wriggling.
“The sooner you let your mom finish,” Kai said. “The sooner you can go in the water.”
Melody seemed to contemplate that for a moment, and then sat down and endured the ritual. Kai smiled and shook his head. Leaning back on his elbows, he let the sun warm his skin through the open khaki green shirt he wore. He was Russian, yes, but he didn't like the cold. But this kind of heat was not his favorite climate either. He was lucky though, because no matter how long he stayed in the sun, he never got burned. He didn't get a tan either, and that was a bit frustrating. 'Pale as a ghost' seemed to be what his pigments had settled for. He always pitied Tala when they went to the beach. He could apply a whole tube of sunblock, but still get a nasty burn after five minutes. And after the burn healed up, he went back to being pale. And the wolf hated the heat. He could lie under the air conditioner a whole day if the temperature reached above 80 degrees, demanding ice cream every five minutes.
“Ok, Melody,” Hilary said. “Now you can go in the water.”
The girl beamed, and jumped to her feet, and then jumped down on Kai's stomach, making him lose all air in him and fall flat on his back.
“Hey!” he blurted out. “That hurt.”
“Go in the water with me!” Melody demanded. “Mommy always take so long!”
“Women tend to do that,” he said and gave Hilary a smirk. “They feel the need to turn themselves into ginger snaps, for some reason unknown to man.” Melody giggled, and Hilary rolled her eyes. “Now, if you get off my stomach, we'll go for a swim.” They got on their feet, and Hilary smiled at the girl's obvious impatience.
“She can only go out until the water is waist high,” she said. “Or you'll have to carry her. She can't swim very well yet.”
“We'll stay close to the water's edge,” he assured her. “I rarely go that far out myself, unless I have a surfboard with me.” He removed the shirt, and Hilary's eyes widened. Covering his entire back, was a tattoo in the shape of a phoenix. It resembled Dranzer, but it was still not exactly her. There was no color in it, except for the flames that spread out around it. The look in the bird's eyes was fierce and the beak was open as if it was giving out a cry. It radiated power and pride, and it was very fitting for its bearer.
“What a beautiful tattoo,” she said. Kai turned around and smiled.
“Thanks,” he said. “I designed it myself. It only took about twenty sketches until I got it right. Dranzer refused to sit still, so I ended up drawing another phoenix. She was insulted, and bit me.”
He took Melody's hand and walked off in the direction of the awaiting water.

“Ey, Tala!”
“Bugger off!”
“Get the fuck out of bed!”
“Make me!”
“You get out of there in five seconds, or I'll drag you out!”
“Touch my door and you're dead!”
Bryan snarled and threw the door open. Tala was hiding under his covers, only one of his devil horns was visible. The curtains were closed, and the room needed some airing. Not to mention that Tala had refused to put new sheets in his bed, because (and this he didn't tell his friends, because there was a risk of them thinking he was sappy) they still held that intoxicating scent that was a mixture of Kai's perfume and personal smell. The falcon pulled the curtains apart, letting in the bright light of the summer sun and then opened the window. The visible horn disappeared under the cover.
“The hell is wrong with you now?” Bryan asked as he went over to the bed and tried to locate the wolf underneath the layers of sheets and blankets.
“My fiancée broke up with me, left the country and won't let me know where he is so I can try to get him back. You guys beat me up everyday for being a bitch, and adding to my torture by pointing out all the shit that could happen to him now – like I don't think about it every second already. Everyone at work is asking me where Kai is, and I don't know what to answer. I don't want to be awake ‘cause it hurts, and I don't want to sleep because I dream about him. I'm being held hostage in my own home by my three best friends. And I have the hangover from hell. That's what's wrong with me!”
The falcon sighed, gripped the pile of different fabrics covering his friend and pulled them off the bed, causing Tala to quickly hide his face under a pillow and whine.
“How the hell is it possible for you to still be hungover?”
“Not still. Again.”
“Tala, you fucking moron. Get up. You need coffee and painkillers.”
“Bry.”
“What?”
“Shut up and let me die!” The wolf grabbed hold of the headboard, obviously not intending to move. “Or ease my fucking pain and shoot me!”
Bryan made a noise that was something like a snarling sigh, walked to the door and shouted:
“Spence! Get in here!”
The blonde giant showed up from the direction of the kitchen. Ian came trailing after him.
“What?” the whale asked. “I'm making lunch, so whatever you want, make it quick or the food will get fucking burned.”
Bryan pointed to the figure in the bed.
“He needs to get the fuck out of that bed, but he's attached himself to the headboard. I can't dislodge him by myself.”
The whale rolled his eyes and went over to the bed. Then he closed one of his large fists around Tala's wrist, and putting pressure on a specific spot that made it impossible for the wolf to keep the grip on the headboard. Bryan did the same to his other wrist, and as soon as they had made him lose his grip, Spencer grabbed him by his neck and dragged him to his feet.
“Come on, Tal. Off we go now.”
They dragged him out to the kitchen, planted him on a chair and handed him a cup of strong coffee. He rested his elbows on the table and held his aching head. Going out to drink last night had not been a really smart move. He made a mental note to himself that he would always follow the number one rule of drinking from here on: Do not mix alcohol together. Bad stuff can happen, and the hangover's are a bitch on her period.
He took a gulp of the coffee, realizing too late that it was scorching hot – and choked on it, burning his mouth and throat. Spencer's huge hand landed on his back repeated times until the coughing had died away. It hadn't helped his throbbing head the least, and he accepted the painkillers that landed in his hand and took the glass of water Ian handed to him.
“I thought we said no more drinking,” Spencer said from over by the stove.
“You said no more drinking,” Tala replied. “I didn't.”
“Well, now you're not gonna drink any more booze until you've gotten a fucking grip on yourself,” Bryan said. “Quite frankly, Tal, I don't wanna see you with booze until you're drinking fucking champagne after your re-engagement. You're such a damned bitch when you drink, and it gets on my nerves.”
“Re-engagement,” Tala snorted. “Yeah, that'll be really easy, considering I don't even know where the hell he is!”
“We promised him we wouldn't tell ya before he said it was ok,” Ian said and sat down next to him. “You can't blame the guy for being pissed, can you?”
“Aw, here we go again,” Tala growled and rolled his eyes. “Yeah, it's all my fault. I'm an over controlling jealous fucker. And he walked out cause of it. Tell me something I don't know!” He looked at his smallest friend. “Just tell me something. Is he alright? Have you guys heard from him?”
“No,” Spencer said while he was slicing up the roasted steak he had just taken out of the oven. The smell coming from it was mouthwatering. “Not a word actually. Now, Bryan, go set the table. Ian bring the potatoes and the sauce over there. Tala... just stay where you are.”
The wolf growled and banged his head against the table in frustration.
“Goddamned motherfucking fucktarded idiotic fuckhead!” He cursed at himself.

Hilary watched Kai and Melody play in the water. The little girl had launched a water splashing attack on the tall man, and he was actually playing along – pretending to be all scared of the cold water. Then he picked her up and carried her out in the water so that she could float on the large waves rolling in. He held a secure grip around her little waist, and she could see the bright smile on the tiny girl's face – turning in to a giggle when a larger than the other wave hit him straight in the face, making him cough. He splashed water back at her, grinning. She splashed back, and soon a water splashing fight had started with Kai holding the little girl on his hip and sending small sprays of water at her. Melody was smiling from ear to ear and splashed back with all her might. Suddenly she heard two female voices just behind her.
“Whoa! Aint that Kai from the Bladebreakers?”
“It sure is! I'd recognize that hottie anywhere. But I didn't know he had a kid.”
“Me neither. I thought he was a faggot. You know, people say he's married or whatever to that hot guy from the Blitzkrieg Boys. Tala.”
Hilary gave a polite cough, and looked over her shoulder at the two women.
“Actually the more appropriate term is 'gay'. And the little girl is my daughter, and his godchild.” She calmly adjusted the scarf she wore around her neck to hide the bruises.
“Oh,” one of them said. “I'm sorry ma'am.” They hurried off, and Hilary smirked.
The two objects of the now fleeing women's attention came back to the blanket, and Kai put a towel around Melody. The little girl was pouting.
“I wanna swim more,” she said.
“In a while, Mel,” Kai said. “You're freezing cold now. You need to get a little warmer first. Or you'll catch a cold.”
“Nu-uh!”
“Uh-huh!”
“Nu-uh!”
“Uh-huh!”
Melody stuck her little pink tongue out at the pale man, who, to Hilary's enormous surprise, did the same back. Chuckling, she put her daughter on her lap and held her close. Kai searched the hamper for a soda, found one and took a gulp. They had made sure to put ice packs in it, so the drinks would stay cool in the hellish heat. He noticed Hilary's gaze being directed towards him, and arched a brow.
“Hn?”
“I didn't know you had such a good hand with kids,” she said. “You hated kids.”
“Three years of regularly babysitting Mariah's and Kevin's kids took that out of me. They are total devils, but, I gotta say, they're adorable.”
“You actually babysat Mariah's kids?” she asked skeptically. “Why didn't Rei do it?”
“He's a chef at the number one restaurant in Hong Kong. He works really strange hours. But he helps out when he can. And I get such good laughter every time they come over to our house. Spence is the only one with even a vague sense of handling kids. Bryan goes to his fb, Ian goes into hiding and Tala gets chased around the house by three raving Chinese kids with a really bad sense of humor and bad aim when launching their blades. They don't believe his hair is real, so they try to pull it off and prove that it's a wig. I usually give them a movie to watch or teach them to blade. Or, you know, read books and stuff. But I swear those kids are seriously on speed or something. They can run around the house in 90 miles an hour and then just fall over on the spot and fall asleep.”
“I can picture it,” she chuckled. “You never thought of adoption or something?”
“No,” he sighed. “As I said before, none of us are really fit to raise a child. We are too messed up. And let’s face it, we are loud, ill-behaved, violent, curse all the time, drink too much and get into fights every now and then. If I grew up in our house I'd be traumatized for life. For example, I don't know how many times I've walked into the living room and found one of the guys – usually Bry – engaging in seriously X-rated activities. Or find them flat out drunk somewhere in the house, in their birthday suits and sometimes in really suspicious outfits and with very dubious company. We can behave for short amounts of time, but if it's longer than a day without some kind of break it will just completely erupt. And besides that, we're traveling the whole world on business – often gone for weeks on ends.”
“I can see your point. But if Mel wants to come visit sometime, you'll let her. Right?”
“If I even go back there myself, yeah. Then she could come to visit.”
Hilary put a hand on his shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze.
“Thing will get better, Kai,” she said. “Tala will realize what he's done wrong, and then you can start over.”
“I want to hope so, Hil. But I can't allow myself to do it. Hope is a stubborn bitch that has never been my friend.”

Back at the apartment, a few hours later, Kai put the sleeping figure of Melody in her bed and gently pulled the covers over her. They were all quite tired, and decided to take a nap. Melody had just started her's early, and fallen asleep in the car during the drive back. Hilary laid down beside her, and Kai walked back to his room. He laid down on his bed, still in his beach clothes and pulled out his phone and dialed a number. It only took three signals before someone picked it up.
“Hey Bry,” he said. “Can you talk?”
/Yeah, no probs. Tala's in the shower, Spencer is out grocery shopping with Ian. So. Where the hell are you?/
“Tokyo.”
/I knew that already. But are you at the house?/
“No, I'm at my old place. Mr. D managed to rent it for me.”
/Alright, that's good I guess. You ok?/
“No, I'm not. But I'm clean and sober at least. I'm keeping myself occupied.”
/Thank God! So what're you doing?/
“I'm teaching art at a high school. And now my life has become really complicated again.”
/Ok? What do you mean by that? You haven't started dating or screwing around have you?/
“No, of course not. Geez, Bry. Head out of the gutter for fucks sake.”
/Then what is it?/
“Do you remember Hilary, from my team?”
/Yeah./
“She's staying here with her kid. Miguel abuses them, and they can't go back there. She had strangling marks on her entire neck when I met her a few days ago. So, I'm looking after them.”
/Miguel? Aint that the pale blonde guy that hates your guts?/
“The same. And he knows she's with me. I saw him when we were out buying new clothes and stuff for them yesterday. She didn't see him though, and that's good. Things have a potential of turning really ugly.”
/For fucks sake, Kai. Be careful! I don't think that bastard's gonna face you one on one./
“I'm not afraid of him. And if he tries to touch them, I'll make sure it's the last thing he does.” He was quiet for a while. “How's...How's Tala?”
/Not too good. He keeps asking us if we've heard from you. Can we tell him where you are?/
“No, not yet. I still need time to think. Really shitty thing of you to pack the album along with my things, by the way. You think I don't hurt enough already?”
/Sorry. We just thought it might help you remember that he's not just a jealous fuckheaded bitch. But ok, we'll keep shut about where you are for now./
“Thanks Bry. Anyway, I just called to tell you guys that I'm still on my feet. I think I'll go to sleep for a while now. I've been entertaining a three-year-old in freezing cold water for a whole day.”
/Ok. I'll tell wolfie you're alive. Take care of yourself now. Whatever you do, don't fall off the fucking wagon again./
“Trust me, I'm trying my hardest not to. Hil and Melody need me right now. I'll keep in touch every now and then.”
/Ok. Bye for now./
“Bye.”
He put the phone on his nightstand, pulled a blanket over him and went to sleep.
