Mystics & Magics
Part Four
By: Valandra
Down on one knee as he worked his fingers through braided hair, Heero looked up with a faint frown. “You don’t remember?” he repeated, glancing towards Wu Fei. The elder Guardian was frowning as well, dark eyes narrowed just so as they examined the skittish human. Duo just shook his head, refusing to look at either of them. ‘Not just skittish,’ Heero realized, feeling the small tremble in Duo’s muscles. ‘But truly frightened. Like in the bath waters…but different. Not fear of punishment, but of something…something more.’
“What do you remember?” Wu Fei asked, his calm voice a soothing balm to both young men. Heero’s twisting thoughts slowed, and Duo’s fear was pushed back. Heero stood slowly, his fingers still working through damp, braided hair; Duo’s head was still bowed, but he saw that it was scrunched up in concentration. ‘Perhaps that was too broad of a question.’
A soft sigh escaped the human, and he looked up with apologetic eyes, his shoulders slumping after a miniscule shrug. “I…remember walking dim halls with two others, but I can’t recall names or faces. Then…then a room like this, but…brighter, more people. Strange oils,” he murmured, rubbing three fingers on his right hand together. His lilac eyes had grown distant, staring at neither of his masters as he stumbled through his memories. “Overwhelming,” he whispered.
Shaded violet blinked, and Duo leaned into Heero with a shiver. He didn’t know how long his master had been at his side, but he was grateful for the man’s presence, his silent strength. This was something he’d been avoiding, that his subconscious had refused to realize on a conscious level. “Odd words were spoken then, and…it felt like a haze, like I existed in…something thick, like the waters. But nothing was different outside of me; I was walking through different halls with others.” Some focus returned to Duo’s eyes, and he glanced at his two masters briefly, uncertain of what he sought. Heero’s arm tightened around his waist, and Wu Fei’s dark eyes were unwavering, more encouraging then the Guardian’s small nod.
Duo smiled faintly, grateful, and continued. “We came here,” he dropped his gaze, seeing Wu Fei’s surprise, and feeling Heero’s through his touch. “The haze…vanished suddenly, just before I was left alone. I remember hearing the trumpets.” Peeking up through damp bangs and thick lashes, Duo looked between the Guardians. “Then you two.”
A heartbeat of silence, then two. Duo made a startled sound and placed a hand against Heero’s bare chest for balance; his master had pulled him closer unexpectedly, disbalancing him. Shaking his head to clear most of his bangs from his sight, Duo looked up at the elder only to shiver at Heero’s expression; his fingers curled against sun-kissed, toned flesh. Heero wasn’t looking at him, but was blatant that the elder was less then pleased. Duo yelped quietly and pressed closer to Heero before looking over his own shoulder to see Wu Fei. Then down to the man’s hand on his shoulder; the unexpected touch responsible for startling him. Dark eyes were kind on him, but Duo could still sense something beneath Wu Fei’s surface. ‘He hides his emotions better then Heero,’ Duo thought, relaxing between the two with a sheepish quirk of a smile. ‘Heero…tries to control his emotions? Maybe….’
Wu Fei offered him a small smile once Duo had calmed from the unintentional scare. Fingers moved from his shoulder, brushed damp hair away from his neck, then up to caress his cheek. Duo leaned into the touch and watched Wu Fei through lidded, curious eyes. ‘What is it about my eyes that fascinates you so?’ he couldn’t help but wonder. He didn’t yet feel bold enough to voice his question, despite his masters’ self-admitted oddities.
Fingers curled around Duo’s cheek and beneath his ear, Wu Fei rubbed his thumb beneath the boy’s eye. “You remember nothing beyond yesterday?” he asked, his voice still calm, still soothing. Duo only shook his head, careful to not move away from his touch with the motion. The dark-eyed Guardian frowned faintly, but the concentration neither broke nor hardened his gentle touch.
Bighting the corner of his bottom lip, Duo looked between the two. The faint movement shifted his hair, and he shivered as the still damp tendrils brushed against his cooling flesh. The action served to draw both Ban’nin from their thoughts and back to the present, much to Duo’s hidden relief. They didn’t leave the bathing chamber, but they did, at Wu Fei’s silent direction, move to a corner the young human hadn’t noticed before. Heero’s arm remained around his waist as they walked; Duo suspected his master was drawing a kind of assurance from it just as he was.
“It might have been wiser to do this before the baths,” Wu Fei broke the silence, his voice, though still gentle, held a hint of amusement. “But it would have served little purpose with those toys still present.” Eyes hidden beneath his bangs, Duo smiled faintly, feeling Heero shiver beside him. But his curiosity was once again aroused and he watched as Wu Fei selected a dark purple nozzle from a small hanging shelf against the corner’s wall. Duo looked up at Heero, feeling the elder’s faint surprise before the Guardian even opened his mouth.
“Where did…?” Heero started, his question trialing off when Wu Fei shot him a small smirk. Duo felt a shiver shoot down his spine, and the look wasn’t even directed at him.
“It was in the chest. I brought it in when I started the waters.” Practiced fingers attached the nozzle to a hose that was also attached to the wall. Lilac eyes followed the hose’s length, but he couldn’t see where it led to. Turning his attention back to Wu Fei, Duo swallowed thickly, his throat unexpectedly tight. A sound from the Ban’nin demanded his attention; Duo reluctantly looked up to Wu Fei’s eyes, confused by his own reaction to the nozzle.
Wu Fei smiled faintly once their eyes locked, and Duo realized the elder had taken a seat on the bench opposite the shelf. As if by some silent signal, Heero moved them forward until they were in arm’s reach. “After this time, this will be your own responsibility. You saw how I attached it?” Duo nodded and glanced at the shelf he’d seen Wu Fei select it from; there were others, a couple similar, but some in different shapes and sizes, and all colored differently. Looking back at his master and the nozzle, he knew what it was that had tightened his throat before; the nozzle’s end was flared in a familiar manner. ‘Is it my imagination?’ Duo wondered, looking back up to Wu Fei. ‘Or did his lips just twitch?’
Wetting his lips, Duo ducked his head but looked up at his master through damp bangs and thick lashes. “I understand, Master,” he practically purred, his voice notably deepened. He fought against a smirk, feeling Heero react behind him. Wu Fei had frozen for a handful of heartbeats, before those beautifully dark eyes narrowed on him; Duo had to fight off a shiver of his own then.
‘Little minx,’ Wu Fei thought, surprised but undeniably impressed. ‘I suppose less then a day wasn’t enough to instill “proper training and fear” into him. Good. Neither of us are fond of broken spirits. …This is going to be fun.’ Wu Fei felt his lips twist upward and he held a hand out to the human. “I suppose you remember something similar?” To which Duo nodded as he stepped away from Heero. “From yesterday?” Again, Duo nodded; not that Wu Fei was surprised.
Heero, recognizing the gleam in his lover’s dark eyes, shivered once Duo was out of his arms. ‘Much as I love him,’ he found himself thinking, watching as Duo followed Wu Fei’s instructions and laid on his belly over the bench and the Ban’nin’s legs. ‘I think I’m relieved now, to not be the sole focus of that streak. Wu Fei can be as vicious in bed as he is in the Field…. The completion truly is more absolute then any victory there, but the path that leads to it….’ Shivering, Heero looked up from Duo, feeling Wu Fei’s gaze on him. He blushed faintly but refused to show any other reaction when their eyes locked; Wu Fei’s smirk grew, caramel fingers trailing down Duo’s spine. ‘Yes, definitely relieved.’
“Ready?” Wu Fei’s soft voice was no louder then a breath, yet it held so much in its tone. Duo shivered beneath the fingers dancing over his ass. Folding his arms on the bench, he nodded before resting his head on them. His arms and chest were supporting his weight on the bench, while his hips were elevated in Wu Fei’s lap, one of his legs threatening to be pulled off by gravity.
“Hmm?” Duo blinked his eyes opened to see Heero sitting on the polished floor beside him, gathering his hair over his shoulder. “Oh,” Duo breathed when the Guardian lifted a brush from his lap. Lips parted with words of gratitude as Heero started brushing his hair in sections, they came out instead as a deep, surprised moan. Dark blue eyes watched as Duo shivered and curled faintly on the bench, his lilac eyes unfocused. Another whimper and a glance at Wu Fei proved that the man was indeed teasing the nozzle’s flared head against Duo’s ring, never fully pushing past it. ‘Best he learns quickly what happens when you tease a Dragon.’ Heero thought, as amused as he was sympathetic.
Minutes of teasing passed before the flared head finally breached the tight ring. Duo shuddered and went lax with a relieved sound, before fingers danced over his spine to gain his attention. Wu Fei’s fingers left his back to twist a handle on the wall, within arm’s reach of the bench. Duo canted his head, hearing something. He jerked with a startled sound, surprised when warm water slowly filled him from the hose’s end. In light of Wu Fei’s teasing, he’d forgotten the item’s purpose.
“Don’t tense,” Wu Fei’s voice, though soothing, held a definite note of amusement. Fingers were caressing the small of his back, dipping further down his crack with each pass.
He squirmed in the Guardian’s lap, the warm, cleaning liquid affecting him as much as Wu Fei’s teasing. The water wasn’t shut off until his squirming slowed and his sounds adopted a strained tone. “Clinch,” he was ordered calmly, before the nozzle was pulled out in one swift motion. Head buried in his arms, Duo felt his face burn even as he moaned at the sudden loss, recalling what would be next.
Minutes passed with agonizing slowness. Just as Duo feared his stomach would start cramping, hands eased him up and directed him to the hollowed out waste-basin in the floor at the end of the bench, located literally in the corner. Taking his steps carefully so as to not trip, Duo knelt over the waste-basin and, with his back to his masters, released the water with a quite, relieved sigh. He lingered there a moment longer, just to be certain his stomach wouldn’t still rebel. When nothing happened, he dried himself and stood. He pressed his foot over the release for the waste-basin before turning back towards his masters.
Both had a warm smile for him, though Duo swore he could see a hint of a blush on Heero’s cheeks, if he looked hard enough. He didn’t stare though, feeling the heat in his own face and neck. With a tip of his head, Wu Fei drew their attention; he turned towards the exit. “I believe breakfast is in order.”
Heero seemed to start at the unexpected comment. He nodded after a moment and led the way out. Both Guardians paused before the doorway to done a robe before stepping back out onto their chamber’s carpet. Standing just beyond the arch, Wu Fei looked back to Duo with…not a smile, but it wasn’t a smirk either. Lifting an arm, he beckoned the morose human forward. “Come along. While Heero prepares breakfast, we’ll look through the wardrobe. There should be something there that will fit you until we can have a tailor summoned for your measurements.”
Lilac eyes widened with faint surprise, much to Wu Fei’s amusement, though he refrained from showing as much. “We’ll send for one after we’ve eaten,” he decided, hand still held out, waiting for Duo. The human stared at him for a heartbeat before stepping forward and accepting his hand. Seeing the struggle in lilac eyes, Wu Fei nodded once before leading the young human back to the bed chamber without a word.
ooOoo
Breakfast was a quiet affair. Duo had been surprised by the sheer amount of food Heero had prepared. Wu Fei hadn’t said anything about it, but his expression at the time and the fact that not even half of it was consumed, told Duo it wasn’t a regular occurrence. But he didn’t question his master on it, despite the curiosity running through him.
Duo couldn’t recall the last time he felt so full. ‘I can’t remember anything beyond yesterday. Nothing but that hall and two faces that have no shape. Even without their reaction earlier, I know this isn’t right, normal. Why can’t I remember?’
The human was startled from his thoughts by a hand on his shoulder. Looking up with a questioning sound, he smiled faintly when his eyes locked with Heero’s. “Thank you again for breakfast. I’m…sorry I couldn’t eat more.” Because even though his masters hadn’t commented on it, he knew Heero had made so much because of him. There had been such a variety, some of which neither Ban’nin touched…it was so Duo could learn his preferences.
Heero just shook his head, wild brown locks scattering into further disarray. His fingers tightened faintly on Duo’s shoulder, and he returned the smile. “You didn’t eat too much, did you?” he asked, quiet voice concerned. As aware as the human seemed to be of him, he hadn’t expected to surprise Duo; he hadn’t been quiet in his approach. His smile grew a touch when Duo shook his head.
“No, just…thinking.” Duo shrugged, his expression sheepish.
“Aa,” Heero sounded, nodding once. He could certainly understand why. ‘It’s more then adjusting to a new life as a slave. It’s a new life entirely, with no memory of his past. Is this normal practice? Wu Fei was just as surprised as me, so I doubt it. And yet,’ cobalt eyes grew thoughtful. ‘His tastes lean more towards our classic dishes, a few unique ones too. He did try a few of the human-inspired dishes, but that was it. …Just who were you with before us?’
“Wu Fei’s gone to fetch the tailor,” Heero spoke before the silence could become odd. ‘And to ensure your tags and registry are taken care of properly,’ he thought, with an effort to keep his expression clear. Surprise-brightened lilac eyes helped. ‘I can see why Wu Fei enjoys watching them.’
His lips twitched when the human’s own moved soundlessly. “Why don’t you make yourself familiar with these chambers?” he suggested. He wanted to sort through and deal with the box that had come with Duo, but he didn’t feel it would be wise for the youth to be with him when he did. It was just a feeling, but he’d learned long ago to trust them. Besides…. “This is your home now. You should feel comfortable.”
Suitably overwhelmed but no less eager, Duo worked his mouth a few times before grinning. Relief was short-lived as a look of hesitancy, of uncertainty dimmed his eyes to a pale lavender. “Are there any places I should not wonder?”
Surprised for a moment, Heero gave the question silent thought, then shook his head. “Do not enter the halls without one of us. Other then that, do not go through our desks,” he waved towards the door that led to their study. “We are both…particular about our filing system. There are books there though, if you are interested.”
Duo was silent for a moment, waiting to be certain that that was everything. When Heero didn’t continue, Duo’s smile and the light in his eyes stole the Ban’nin’s breath away. Before Heero knew it, Duo’s arms were around him and the youth’s face was pressed in the crook of his shoulder and throat. “Thank you,” Duo’s soft voice broke through his stupor. But before he could return the embrace, Duo was gone, already exploring.
Shaking his head, grinning despite himself, Heero returned to the bedchamber and the task he’d set for himself.
ooOoo
An hour turned to two before Wu Fei returned. He found the silence and lack of activity somewhat odd, despite it having always been the norm before. Leaving the tailor in the sitting room, he inspected the sleeping chambers first. He found it empty and much as they had left it that morning. Except…turning a full circle, Wu Fei made a quiet sound when he could not locate the box that had accompanied Duo. ‘Heero must have cleaned up. I can only imagine the headache that disorder was causing him.
‘Relaxation then,’ his thoughts continued from that strain. ‘Not the baths again, so….’ Lips curving slowly, Wu Fei’s steps were sure and steady. ‘The study.’
Heero at his desk was par the norm, documenting anything of importance from yesterday’s council. The stacks of various books on the rug before the fire wasn’t. Duo was stretched out on his stomach before the same fire, a thick tomb opened before him. A quick glance showed the human was almost through with it. ‘Must be skimming,’ Wu Fei thought, smiling faintly when the long-haired youth carefully turned an old page. ‘He couldn’t possibly understand the Old Language. The script is an art unto itself…pity it’s been lost.’
“Don’t you two look content?” Wu Fei’s smile quirked up into a smirk when both males jumped in surprise. Heero rolled his eyes and returned to his notes, causing Wu Fei to chuckle.
“Welcome back,” Duo’s soft, almost hesitant words drew his attention, and tempered his smirk back into a smile. He held a hand out to the youth, who smiled shyly in return. Duo glanced back at his page to memorize the marker; he closed it with great care before he pushed himself up to join the elder. Duo’s smile eased into something more natural and easy, once he realized he was allowed to speak.
‘They had less then a day with you, but with no other memories, you’ve taken their warnings and whatever impromptu training they managed to heart. On the light side, you’ll loose those same teachings and whatever inhibitions they gave you just as quickly.’ Nodding faintly in approval when his hand was taken, obsidian eyes widened a touch when Duo went a step further and laced their fingers. ‘Maybe sooner then I expected.’
“The tailor’s here for your measurements. You’ll have to disrobe for him.” Duo nodded his understanding, his grip tightening briefly. Heero stood behind them then, a desk drawer closing with his latest report inside.
“We can sit down for lunch once he’s finished.” If possible, Duo seemed more at ease between them, at the prospect of having both masters with him.
ooOoo
The tailor was polite, his touches different from his masters and the teachers before. ‘More like the healer’s, but still different. Impersonal? But not hollow.’ Duo found the experience less uncomfortable then he’d anticipated. Halfway through the measurements for a set of formal robes, Heero left them to start lunch. By the time lunch was prepared, the man was finished and on his way to start on a set of basic day and nightwear to be sent over by morning.
The lunch that followed was a quiet and far less extravagant affair then breakfast. The three returned to the study afterwards, though Wu Fei caught Duo’s wrist before the young human could return to his books. Duo looked up at him curiously, and Heero paused halfway between them and the fire, intent on rekindling it.
Lifting up his free hand, Wu Fei let the three charms he held chime against each other. Duo stared at them for a moment before understanding brightened his eyes and he lifted his free hand up to his collar. Wu Fei nodded once, smiling faintly himself. “There weren’t any issues?” Heero inquired, despite knowing Wu Fei would have taken care of them before returning.
Wu Fei shook his head and stepped up to stand a hands’ span from the human. Releasing Duo’s wrist, he connected the three charms to the three rings centered on Duo’s collar. One was Wu Fei’s emblem, the second Heero’s. And the final declared Duo’s race and status; it was however, more elaborate then most, marking him as a gift from a Kami, placing him in the higher rankings of the slave status. Fingers gentle, Wu Fei stroked Duo’s cheek before stepping back. Duo hesitated a moment before he shifted, testing the additions; though they’d looked like precious metal or stone, they felt weightless. ‘I wonder if it’s a spell?’
Mentally shrugging, Duo smiled faintly at his masters. “Thank you.” He canted his head curiously when he saw surprise in Wu Fei’s eyes. But it was gone in a heartbeat, leaving Duo to wonder if he’d imagined it. Shrugging to himself once more, Duo half turned to the little spot on the floor he’d made for himself earlier, his books just as he’d left them. When Wu Fei didn’t protest, Duo stretched back out on the floor and reopened the tome he’d been reading before, back to the page-marker he’d memorized.
Fire renewed, Heero pulled out the latest reports on the geographical standing of his province for catching up, and joined Duo on the floor near the fire. Rolling his eyes, Wu Fei joined the two as well, only he claimed a seat beside Duo. Skimming the ancient text over Duo’s shoulder, Wu Fei shook his head once more. “It is a beautiful language,” he mussed softly.
Duo couldn’t help himself, he snorted in amused disbelief before he could stop himself. Looking up with a blush, he ducked his head to hide behind his bangs. “Sorry,” he murmured. When Wu Fei did nothing more then look at him curiously, Duo returned the look with one of his own and raised an eyebrow. Tracing one of the fancy symbols, Duo shook his head. “The calligraphy is lovely,” he agreed, looking down to the script beneath his fingers. “But the language gives me a headache. It’s very…longwinded, and roundabout.” When his assessment was met with silence, Duo looked up to Wu Fei, a touch worried he had insulted his master. “You…don’t agree?”
Wu Fei just blinked at him. Looked down at the text, then back at Duo. “You,” the dark-eyed Ban’nin spoke slowly, his words carefully selected. “Can read the symbols? Understand them?”
Duo hesitated a moment before nodding, the space between his eyes crinkling. “Yes,” he answered slowly. He looked over at Heero, who was watching them with mild curiosity. “Can’t you?” Duo asked, looking back to Wu Fei. He swallowed thickly when the elder shook his head negatively.
Frowning, Heero set aside his reports and crawled over to join the two. “What is it?” he asked. He didn’t think there was anything in their collection that Wu Fei couldn’t read. Had no desirer to perhaps, but incapable? Wu Fei prided himself on his scholarly standing and abilities.
“A tome of the Old Language,” Wu Fei answered, his voice just barely above a whisper. Even with his lack of interest in his partner’s scholarly pursuits, Heero was familiar with the Old Language. Or rather, familiar with the lack of knowledge that remained about it. It was a pursuit that kept Wu Fei up nights on end every time he discovered a new tome for his collection. One had kept his partner’s attention for a full three months straight. It had been exasperating…but he had his own eccentricities that Wu Fei dealt with.
Wu Fei touched Duo’s wrist gently, and felt the boy tremble, as if fearful. Smiling faintly, Wu Fei nodded to the page Duo had just been reading. “Would you read it aloud?” he requested, doing his best to temper his eagerness. “Please?”
Violet eyes widening in surprise, Duo nodded once and slowly returned his gaze to the tome. Wetting his lips, he cleared his throat before slowly starting. “Illiandios sanchurian yi, Sanfren ligitian….” Duo trailed off, feeling his master’s disappointment before he looked up. “You don’t understand,” he stated softly, knowing it to be true.
Wu Fei shook his head, disappointment crushing him once more. It didn’t matter how many tomes he tried, the disappointment was fresh with each one. To be so much closer…it was nigh-on devastating. He looked up, startled to feel Duo’s fingers brushing his bottom lip. Duo’s smile was hesitant but no less endearing. “If you like,” Duo spoke slowly, watching Wu Fei carefully for his reaction. “If I can have something to write with, I can translate it to this common tongue….” For a moment, Duo thought Wu Fei might tackle him in his excitement. The way his master’s dark eyes lit up reminded him of…of someone, who he couldn’t put a face or name to before the fog reclaimed the almost memory. But it was special. Duo tucked the new memory away and grinned. “I’ll take that as a yes.”
“Most definitely,” Wu Fei agreed. Across the tome from them, Heero just groaned. Wu Fei chuckled, knowing his partner’s train of thought. “It’ll be good for him to have something to occupy himself with whenever we’re out on duty.”
Duo chuckled softly and tried not to dwell on the thought of being left alone. “It’ll be slow,” he warned, unwilling to set his master up for further disappointment. “I was serious when I said it’s roundabout. Translating it into something that makes sense in this language’ll be time consuming.” Looking back down to the tome, Duo sighed as he skimmed the archaic symbols. “I’ll need a lot of parchment.”
The two Ban’nin shared a look over Duo’s head. “Then let’s work with paper first. Once you’ve gotten the final translation ready, then we can see about having it scribed to parchment,” Wu Fei decided.
Duo blinked and looked up at his master. A faint blush colored his cheeks. “That works too.” Laughing quietly, Heero shook his head and returned to his reports.
“Just how many languages do you know Duo?” Heero asked, curious as he lifted his reports.
“Huh?” Duo asked, looking up at his master, confused. Heero was watching him with a hint of curiosity in his clear blue eyes. The Ban’nin had yet to reopen his reports.
“You said ‘this language’,” Heero clarified. “As if ‘this common tongue’ isn’t your native one. How many more do you know?” Wu Fei made a curious sound then, interested and chagrined that he’d failed to notice Duo’s phrasing. He was too eager and excited at the prospect of being able to read the Old Language, long-since considered dead.
Duo frowned faintly in thought, then shrugged. “I don’t know,” he answered honestly. He pointed at two of the stacks he had to the side. “Those two at least.” The two arched a brow at him, causing him to shy away. “Um, sorry?” he apologized uncertainly. The two Ban’nin shared another look, causing the young human further unease.
Leaning forward, Wu Fei caught the hand that had touched him moments ago. He brought it up and pressed a kiss to Duo’s fluttering wrist. “You are truly an oddity Duo,” Wu Fei declared, though he smiled while doing so. “Which means you’re perfect with us, as I’ve said. But…your knowledge combined with your lack of memory is a point of concern. For us,” he added, motioning to himself and Heero. “You shouldn’t try to force anything, or you’ll get a headache as you did in the baths.” Wu Fei hesitated a moment, then nodded once. “Duo, I want you to promise you’ll tell one of us if you feel that again. We don’t want to induce it, but knowing if anything else stimulates it might help us learn what’s happened to your memories.”
Duo blinked then nodded after a moment. “I promise,” he swore softly. Looking back at Heero, he smiled shyly. “Thank you both.”
Companionable silence settled over them shortly after, each loosing themselves to their respective texts. Though, more often then not, Wu Fei caught himself watching Duo read the Old Language rather then the tome in his own lap. He found his focus easier to maintain when Duo decided to take a break from the ancient tome with a third of the tome remaining.
ooOoo
Supper was another quiet affair, companionable and small. At Wu Fei’s suggestion, Heero showed the young human around the kitchen. He explained where things were and how the utilities worked, and when Duo helped him prepare the meal, he took to it like a natural. After explaining that he was welcomed and expected to help himself outside of meals, they sat down to eat.
Afterwards, while Wu Fei and Duo cleaned up, Wu Fei elaborated on why Heero showed him. “There will be times when one or both of us will be gone for the day, or days at a time if we cannot avoid it. You can take care of yourself; human, slave, or anything else, that’s not something that should be taken from anyone. …Not permanently at least.” Lips twitching, he shook his head at Duo’s politely curiously confused expression. “Never mind. My point is, tomorrow Heero’s descending to the land below, and I’ve a meeting in the afternoon. Other then that, I’ll be here.”
Drying his hands, Duo nodded before the Ban’nin elaborated further. “I understand,” he assured, a grin pulling at his lips. “Thank you master.”
Humming quietly, Wu Fei put the dishes he held away before ushering the human out of the room. “Heero’s going to be up for most of the night reading those reports. I only intend to put in another hour or so.” Duo nodded and followed after him to the study, too curious still about the books there to be sleepy.
One hour passed, then two, and soon three came and passed without notice. When Wu Fei looked at the time, he was honestly surprised by how much had slipped by him without notice. Book resting in his lap, he stretched his arms above his head with a relieved sound, and observed his companions. Heero still going full-tilt through his reports was no surprise. Moving on, Duo surprised him. The human was just as enthralled with his reading as he had been that afternoon when he’d returned and after lunch. ‘I’d wonder if his endless energy were bleeding over if he weren’t human. …It would explain why I feel like only an hour’s gone by.’ Shaking his head and such thoughts away, Wu Fei made himself stand and put his book away. ‘I don’t want to oversleep, and Duo should really keep with our regular schedule. …Not that Heero ever does when he has to make a decent.’
Shaking his head once more, Wu Fei leaned over Duo and, placing a bit of paper on the youth’s current page, closed the book. “Alright, that’s enough for tonight. You’ll have all day tomorrow for them, but for now it’s time for bed.”
Duo pouted but stood nonetheless. “Goodnight Heero,” Duo spoke softly. The blue-eyed Ban’nin looked up with a curious sound, then nodded once to the human, his expression softening briefly. “Goodnight Duo.” Glancing past Duo then, he shared a nod with Wu Fei, then returned to his reports.
Glancing over his shoulder, Duo rolled his eyes and snagged Wu Fei’s wrist, drawing him from the room, much to the Ban’nin’s amusement. “He’s not much for talking, is he?” Duo asked, his curious tone anything but disrespectful.
Wu Fei chuckled and shook his head. “Usually no,” Wu Fei agreed. “Although, I think you may make up for that.”
Blinking, Duo looked over at the Ban’nin, then blushed and released him. “Sorry,” he murmured, though not nearly so fearful as he would have been that morning. Wu Fei shook his head and reclaimed the boy’s hand. “Don’t be.” After a moment, a small smile returned to Duo’s lips.
