“Oww…” Ed said rubbing his cheek. “That really hurt.”
“But on the
other side we’re still alive and not that badly hurt.” Al sai/spa/span>
“Yeah… I know.
And it’s not like I wasn’t expecting this to happen. What we did went against
everything she taught us.” Ed said sighing.
Ed looked at his
brother and felt the guilt hit him even harder. It was even worse now, in a
way. Ed was aching all over from the beating their sensei had given him but Al…
He couldn’t even feel pain or touch.
“It’s not your
fault, brother,” Al said quietly. “I’ll keep saying it to you until you believe
it too.”
If there was one
thing Alphonse hated it was seeing that look on his brother’s face. He looked
defeated. It wasn’t usual for Ed to look like that since he preferred to react
to everything with anger or other more normal emotions.
“I think I’ll go
take a walk.” Ed said getting up from the ground.
“Brother…”
“I’ll be back
soon.”

Envy was sitting
on the roof of a house again. It was easy to see from way up high and it was
pretty easy to move without being seen. Of course he could’ve just changed into
someone more ordinary looking but what would be the fun in that? Besides as
he’d said to Lust before, he liked his current cute form. Not that he could
remember if it was his original form or something he’d just grown used to.
He watched Ed
idly as the boy walked along the streets of Dublith deep in thought. For a
moment he had thought that the boy was ready to give up, but that went past
quickly. It was more likely that Ed wouldn’t stop his search for the
philosopher’s stone until he had restored Alphonse’s body or he was killed. Envy
smirked. As long as he was watching the boy’s back he wouldn’t let death touch
him. Ed was too important to them.
“Important to… us?” Envy asked in a
moment of slight confusion.
He had meant the
homunculi of course but there was something slightly worrying about that
anyway. When he looked down again he noticed that he had managed to lose
Edward. He cursed and jumped down changing his shape again to better fit into
the crowd.
It was fortunate
for him that it wasn’t hard to spot Ed even in a crowded street such as the one
he was walking along now. It didn’t matter that he was short since he just had
this habit of standing out in the crowd. It was hard to not notice the boy even
when he wanted to be unnoticed.
At the moment
the boy was leaning against a wall looking at his feet. Envy walked closer
deciding to make his presence known again. When he was walking nearer the boy
he raised his head and looked at him narrowing his eyes. Then he smiled
lightly. Envy had to admit he was surprised.
“So here you are
flirting with strangers eh, ochibi-san?” Envy asked
stopping next to the small alchemist.
“I knew it was
you. Decided to get that out of the way for today.” Ed
said letting the corners of his mouth move to a more familiar position.
“And just how
did you know it was me?” Envy asked curiously.
“I know what it
feels like when you’re watching me. You’re the only one who keeps his eyes on
me all the time.” Ed answered.
“Oh I have
underestimated you then.” Envy said.
That was true.
He hadn’t expected that his presence would be that easy to feel. But Ed was
right in one thing. He never took his eyes off the boy when he was watching
him. Except for that moment on the roof today.
“So what do you
want now?” Ed asked.
“Nothing. I just wanted to see you,”
Envy answered truthfully. “you looked like you could
do with some company.”
That earned him
a look he couldn’t quite comprehend.
“How come your
eyes are golden?” he suddenly asked.
The question
obviously threw Ed off balance.
“I don’t know. I
was born with them,” Ed answered trying to figure out what was the point of the
question.
“Hmm you’re
lucky. They really suit you. Make you all the more special.” Envy said smiling.
Ed frowned and
looked at the homunculus.
“Can’t you
change back to the way you usually look?” he asked hesitantly.
“Why?”
“Because it’s weird to see a stranger talk and act like yo/spa/span> Ed said.
Envy grinned
realizing that his prey was caught in his net. And the poor fool didn’t even
know he was caught in it.
“Well I could do
that but what do I get in exchange for doing a favor for you?” Envy asked.
“It’s not a
favor if you change back to yourself. Stay like that for all I care. I’m going
back.” Ed said turning around and walking away.
Envy stayed
behind and shrugged. He wasn’t in a hurry since his prey walked into the trap
on his own feet. The thought of Ed doing that amused him to no end. Though
there was something that worried him though he couldn’t say precisely what it was.
Oh well he’d cross that bridge when he’d come to it.

“I need to tell
you something,” Ed said to his brother suddenly.
The two of them
were in their room sitting on their beds. Al had cast a worrying glance towards
his brother when he’d come back but hadn’t said anything. Ed had felt worse for
that for some reason.
“What is it?”
Alphonse asked.
“You know I said
that someone’s following us. In the train,” Ed said looking out of the window.
“Yes.” Al said
waiting for his brother to continue.
<
<
“I know who it
is.” Ed continued fidgeting nervously.
He knew he was
breaking the deal he’d made with Envy but… Al deserved to know. He didn’t want
his brother to be in danger just because Ed hadn’t told him about a potential
enemy. Al waited patiently for more information.
“You know that
guy that carried me from the fifth research facility when it blew up… It’s him.
The guy with the ouroboros mark on his left leg.” Ed
said turning to look at his brother.
“How do you know
it?” Alphonse asked.
“I’ve seen him…
and talked with him and…” Ed stopped there figuring that it probably wasn’t a
good idea to tell his brother that he’d been kissed by the freak.
“And he has some
sort of hold over you.” Alphonse said.
It was no use
denying it so Ed just nodded.
“I think he
won’t do anything to us for now but I can’t guarantee that’ll last forever,” Ed
said. “keep your eyes open when we’re outside.”
“Do you really
think we can’t take care of him now? I don’t like the idea of someone shadowing
our footsteps.” Al asked although he knew the answer.
If there was
anything Edward could do he would’ve done it already. That
just made him worry more because it seemed that their stalked had his
eyes on his brother.
***
It was raining
when Ed went out the next day. The sky was dirty grey and the streets were
muddy. A miserable weather to suit his less than cheery mood.
He felt the attack before it happened. He lashed out with his automail arm and
yelped in surprise when it was grabbed and he was pulled into a smaller
alleyway. He was thrown against a wall harshly and pinned against it.
“We had a deal, ochibi-san.” Envy hissed eyes narrowed dangerously.
Ed stared into
the violet eyes trying to gather his thoughts.
“You broke our
de Env Envy continued pressing closer. “did you think
there would be no consequences for that?”
Ed shook his
head trying to think what to do now. He couldn’t use alchemy since Envy kept
his hand separated and he couldn’t draw a transmutation circle either. He was
pinned against the wall trapped between it and Envy’s body. There was
absolutely nothing he could do.
“Well? Why don’t
you say anything?” Envy asked angrily.
“I had to tell
Alphonse. I can’t put him into danger because of your weird games.” Ed finally
answered trying to shove the other away.
“And all you’ve
succeeded in doing is to get him into even more danger. I could kill him just
to show you how serious I am.” Envy said.
“You can’t kill
him when he has that body.” Ed answered angrily scared not for himself but for
his brother.
Envy just smiled
and leaned closer until his mouth was next to Ed’s ear.
“I know where
his bloodseal is.” he whispered.
Ed shivered at
the contrast of warm breath against his cool skin.
“I could kill
him and this time there would be no way to bring him back.” Envy said pulling
back a little.
“You bastard!” Ed shouted and started
struggling.
He heard Envy
chuckle amusedly while restraining his desperate attempts easily.
“But lets say that you could protect your brother by making a deal
with me.” Envy said.
Ed tested Envy’s
hold one last time before giving in. He nodded.
“Good boy. Now
the question is… how much are you prepared to promise in return for your
brother’s safety?”
Ed didn’t
hesitate.
“Anything.”
Envy smiled.
“That’s just
what I wanted to hear.”
