Chapter Four
Vegeta's time in the medical machine was completed under heavy sedation, during which his mind wandered lazily between his now rewritten past and his uncertain future. As the last of his strength was restored, he was further sedated until he fell into a darkness that was fast becoming a common part of his new life. When he woke next, he growled in anger that he was once again strapped to the vertical slab, though thankfully without the gag. He twisted his head from side to side, seeing that everything was the same as before: straps crossed the surface of his mostly nude body, an intravenous line ran into his left wrist, and the room was empty from his limited perspective.Though his restraints were mostly unchanged, it was a very different feeling to be strapped down to the slab when he was at his full strength. He had long recovered from the K.R.I. surgery, and hadn't been wasting away for days without a chance to stretch his limbs. He had complete strength in his extremities, and felt rested and alert, perhaps more so than normal. At this thought, Vegeta considered the possibility that he had been given some sort of reversing agent for whatever sedative had been used during his transport, since he was waking up in a way he hadn't yet before.
Whatever the reason, Vegeta felt strong and anxious to free himself, and started pulling at the bonds with his full strength. Though the straps were retractable, it quickly became evident that they were not going to budge without being purposefully released. Once his limbs and torso developed red marks from his escape attempts, Vegeta bitterly accepted that he would not be able to overcome the restraints, even given his full recovery. It was a difficult truth to admit; if he hadn't had the K.R.I. device implanted, he would have been able to overwhelm the restraints easily.
Vegeta's sharpened mind turned quickly to the device resting somewhere under the skin of his neck, presumably near his spine. He tried to remember everything that Freeza had said about it: it had been developed over ten years, been designed specifically for him, and sensed the release or manipulation of ki to "punish him accordingly."
That's not the only way it's activated, Vegeta thought resentfully as he remembered the remote activation that had sent him into convulsions. How can this technology exist? The question emerged again, and it still baffled him. It made sense that Freeza would keep this sort of innovation a secret, but how had it been developed to such an effective level without having been tested, let alone on its intended subject?
Maybe it's not so effective, Vegeta considered suddenly. It has to have a flaw. It's not as though Freeza's scientists would tell him their product was incomplete if he was rushing them or making threats. Vegeta simply had to find its weakness, or find an opportunity to remove the device. The pain from a simple wound to his neck would be more than worth it, as long as he could rip the terrible thing out. For the time being, he'd have to try to defeat it some other way, and his thoughts turned to destroying it from the inside out. There was nothing that could withstand a large, forceful release of ki. A large enough blast could even destroy a planet, so surely he could produce enough ki to fry the K.R.I. device while it was still embedded. The problem was, of course, ignoring the intense pain it caused in order to produce enough ki at one time.
Frowning wryly to himself, Vegeta acknowledged that he had nothing better to do to occupy his time, and braced himself for the unwelcome task. He glanced around himself once more, but did not see nor hear any evidence of company. Before beginning, he closed his eyes to concentrate on releasing controlled amounts of ki. The smallest amount of ki he could release registered as a tingle of pain along his spine. This was bearable enough, so he stopped and released a larger portion of ki, eliciting a crackle of pain over his back and the tightening of some of his muscles. He paused again, then tried a slightly increased amount, resulting in a sharp burning sensation that radiated through his body and caused his limbs to flex almost to the point of tetany. Vegeta concluded that the K.R.I.'s punishments escalated steeply, but he could not yet tell if they were cumulative. He experimented with the same level of ki he'd released, but waited longer and longer durations of time before initiating a new round. It seemed that no matter how long he waited between releasing energy, the device inflicted the same amount of torment for a given level of ki. Next, Vegeta scrutinized the effect of releasing the same level of ki for increasingly extended periods of time. He quickly concluded that there was no escalation of pain so long as the ki release was held steady at a given level. The longer the K.R.I. device was activated, however, the more his muscles tended to cramp and the longer it took for them to relax after the pain had stopped.
Given these discoveries, Vegeta decided that the best way to proceed was to condition himself to release increasingly larger blasts of ki for short intervals of time. Vegeta concluded that there would be no benefit to releasing ki at a given level for an extended amount of time, as it seemed unlikely that an initially ineffective blast could eventually fry the device. At that thought, Vegeta was filled with renewed dread, remembering the intense pain he’d experienced before. Even though the K.R.I. had already pushed him toward maddening levels of pain, it was likely he would have to release a much larger amount of ki. Vegeta could only take comfort in his past accomplishments: if there were something he should be used to by now, it was being underestimated by his enemies. Surely Freeza’s engineers had made the device too weak to withstand his most powerful manipulation of ki.
Vegeta continued to prepare himself before releasing increasingly larger amounts of ki until the results had him panting long after the device returned to inactivity. The pain had reached a point that it felt like hot lacerations racing across the entire surface of his body. Growing frustrated, sure that he was now releasing more ki than he had in Freeza's presence, he roared with one last attempt. His vocalized effort turned into a deep growl of anguish as his limbs flexed against their straps, adding another layer of pain to the sharp, white-hot feeling that he was having all the flesh torn from his bones. Despite his effort to make the attempt as brief as possible, the last round left him mentally and physically drained. Vegeta gritted his teeth and hissed as the muscle spasms ran their course. He realized that he would have to save the remainder of his strength for now. He had no way to know when Freeza would return again, but Vegeta set his mind on putting up a strong, defiant front. He drew pleasure from imagining Freeza’s surprise at his refusal to be toyed with any longer. Maybe I let myself forget how conniving you are, Freeza, but you have forgotten the strength of my pride. Vegeta half-smiled in anticipation.

Vegeta did not have to wait long. There were a few false alarms over the course of what was probably a couple of days, when Vegeta had stiffened at the sound of the door opening and closing. All of these times had probably been a medic, coming in to check on him directly or to administer something to him via his intravenous line. In each case, the visitor had left without speaking to him, and he'd waited in silence until eventually he heard the door open and close again. Now he sensed that it was not the same person as before. There was one pair of footsteps at first, then the sound of feet lightly hitting the floor. It had to be Freeza, entering in his hovercraft then climbing out, probably accompanied by a medic. Vegeta steeled himself.Freeza came out from somewhere behind the table, walking until he was several meters away from Vegeta before lazily turning to face him. Vegeta remained silent, keeping an icy glare locked on Freeza's small face, which was free of a scouter. Don't want to be disturbed while you have your fun? Vegeta gritted his teeth at the thought, but held his tongue. Freeza made no visible signal, but Vegeta felt the straps containing him abruptly retract away from his body. Vegeta slowly brought his arms to his sides, casually using each of his hands to rub the indentations left behind by the straps as he carefully stepped down from the platform.
Vegeta stood casually, wrapping his tail around the band of the black shorts that still served as his only covering. As they scrutinized each other, Vegeta wanted to reach up to feel for the K.R.I. device in his neck, but didn’t want to appear concerned with anything but his enemy.
"You appear to be more healthy today, Vegeta," Freeza broke the silence, an implied threat hanging in the air between them. When Vegeta made no move to kneel or bow before Freeza, as was customary when first addressed by the overlord, Freeza folded his arms. "I see that your renewed health has not improved your disposition. How inconvenient." Freeza feigned disappointment with a playful frown, bringing one hand up to his cheek as his other hand held his elbow.
"I won't be taking any more orders from you, Freeza," Vegeta spat, surprising himself with the sound of Freeza's name without its customary ending. Freeza's mock frown momentarily twitched into a real scowl before he regained his casual indifference.
"Oh? That really is a shame," Freeza's voice took on a serious tone. "Poor Vegeta. Clearly you are still not thinking your actions through. Have you not realized that you have to play my little game if you are ever going to survive to serve me again? You are simply demonstrating that you still have not learned that you lack adequate judgment to control your own actions. Only someone as intelligent and powerful as I is fit to control a simple-minded beast like you." Freeza's words incited Vegeta to slip into a fighting stance, shaking with reaffirmed fury. Freeza ignored this and continued, "When you accept that you are only as useful as you are unquestioning, then I might be able to utilize you again. Until then—"
"Is that why you have had this device implanted in me? Because you can't control me otherwise? Am I too much for you to handle, Freeza? You must have me weakened before you can even face me?!" Vegeta let his hatred flow freely. Though he knew in the back of his mind that Freeza could have killed him, K.R.I. device or not, he hated Freeza for not giving him a chance to fight for himself.
"Your pride has not been discouraged," Freeza's eyes flashed with equal hatred. "I suppose I could eliminate that troublesome ego or yours by killing you now." Freeza let his arms fall to his sides, also taking on a ready stance, “But I would much rather beat it out of you."
Vegeta stiffened at Freeza's final statement, but was still not ready for what came next. Freeza's confident form was stationary and solid before him for a moment but then disappeared. Leaving no visible signs of movement, Freeza reappeared at Vegeta’s side and just behind him, gripping his left arm. Freeza allowed Vegeta to register this simple fact before he swiftly jerked the arm away from its body, dislocating it. The pain had yet to register when Freeza let go of the limp limb and punched Vegeta in the middle of his back, sending him onto his knees and his still functional arm. Vegeta hit the ground, choking down a shocked cry of pain. By the time Vegeta looked up, Freeza had returned to his original position, standing with crossed arms and an air of overflowing smugness.
"That is much better," Freeza announced cheerfully, watching Vegeta push himself up onto his knees so he could clutch his limp arm with the other. "Now, where was I? Ah, yes. I was just reminding you of your only purpose in life: to serve me, without question. It is now clear to me that you are even more prideful and insolent than one could ever imagine. Had you been truly loyal, as you claim, what has already happened would be enough to leave you begging for my mercy. Instead, you dare to stand before me and say that you will no longer obey my orders." Freeza tsked.
Stunned, Vegeta made no effort to stand as he confronted his complete inability to defend himself. He hadn't seen Freeza move at all. In the past, Freeza had produced terrifying amounts of energy to destroy ships and vaporize people, but he'd almost never seen Freeza engage in battle directly. Vegeta had never considered how Freeza's wealth of power would translate into speed such as he'd just witnessed. He'd thought his previous, weakened state had been to blame for his inability to follow Freeza's movements, but now he was almost at full strength. Still, he had to remain strong. Vegeta had his pride, and he couldn't give up.
"Until you learn your place, until then, you will be punished. When you are ready, I will give you the opportunity to serve me again," Freeza continued. Vegeta growled threateningly up at Freeza in response. The idea of ever willingly being Freeza’s slave again was repulsive to him.
"You will never have enough patience to wait until I am ready to serve you again," Vegeta warned confidently. It would take eternity.
Freeza's face hardened as his temper flared. "Your treatment will require none of my patience, Vegeta. I am going to enjoy every moment of it.” Freeza caught himself letting his anger escalate, and his expression relaxed. "Starting now," he announced.
Vegeta steeled himself for another unseen attack, but this time Freeza began his approach with a few leisurely steps. In that moment, Vegeta remembered his other objective: to rip the K.R.I. device out of his neck. He had hoped to learn more about it before such an attempt, but he only had the use of one arm left and he wasn't sure when, if ever, he'd be free again from complete restraint. Vegeta let go of his useless arm and quickly reached up to the back of his neck, feeling there for anything out of the ordinary: a bump, a seam, any indication of the location of the implant.
"Ah, ah, aah," Freeza taunted. He left Vegeta no time before his tail extended and struck Vegeta across the face, almost knocking him senseless. Vegeta lost track of which direction was up and which was down, but regained awareness in time to feel Freeza drag him upward by his damaged arm. For a split second, Vegeta believed that his arm was actually being ripped from his torso. His body's weight pulled at the injured limb, further tearing its ligaments and tendons as Freeza lifted him from the floor. Vegeta tried to get his feet beneath him or grab Freeza with his other arm, but this only caused his dislocated limb to painfully twist. Freeza caught Vegeta's free hand and pushed it down as his tail wrapped around Vegeta's abdomen, pinning it to his side. He raised Vegeta completely off of the ground, letting the injured arm fall limply downward. Vegeta was trapped, held so that he was unable to land a kick, causing him to snarl with frustration.
"I can not have you ruining my fun by killing yourself," Freeza scolded. Vegeta momentarily wondered if the device were set to kill him if it were tampered with, but Freeza soon clarified. "The K.R.I. device is connected directly into your spinal cord. You would have to destroy yourself to remove it non-surgically." Vegeta renewed his struggling, trying to twist out of Freeza's tail. "You see, Vegeta, you need me. You need me to control you so you do not harm yourself. If it were not for me, you would have perished long ago...and here I am, still protecting you.” Vegeta stopped struggling to glare in silent outrage, to which Freeza cocked his head to the side, regarding him with a smile. “When will I accept that you are a lost cause?" Freeza's voice had a note of parental exasperation. Without pausing to let his words sink in, Freeza struck Vegeta several times across the face, slapping him with an open hand that nonetheless left Vegeta dazed and his face bloody from being grazed by Freeza's black claws.
Freeza pensively licked the blood from his fingertips and continued. "All of my best advisers have told me not to bother with such a senseless animal like you. But I think your improvement will make a great...project." Freeza smiled sweetly into Vegeta's blinking eyes. They slowly regained their focus as his head rolled back to an erect position. Vegeta could now see that Freeza's hand had been extended off to the right, and that a medic was hastily placing something black into the open palm. As the medic nervously retreated, Vegeta was surprised to remember that they may have had an audience.
"I have to admit that your actions have been tediously predictable up to this point, but this will keep you from trying anything particularly stupid." With his free hand, Freeza grabbed the front of Vegeta's face, piercing his claws into each of Vegeta's cheeks to hold him still as he brought the object in his hand up to Vegeta's neck. Vegeta grimaced as the talons dug deep into his flesh, preparing for intense pain from whatever else Freeza was doing. To his surprise, he only experienced the shock of something cold enveloping his neck.
After a heavy click, Freeza released Vegeta's face and whipped his tail so that Vegeta was flung to the floor, landing on his injured side with a sickening crack. Vegeta was too stunned to try to bring himself up in any way, but slowly reached up to feel what Freeza had done. His fingers encountered a cold, thick piece of metal encircling his neck, covering the location of the K.R.I. device. It was tight enough that he could not work his fingertips under it but loose and narrow enough that he could still bend his neck to look up at Freeza venomously.
Vegeta had not noticed the remote Freeza was now holding, and was caught completely off guard when a blazing pain burst over his body. It continued long enough that Vegeta almost forgot what had been happening before it had started. He was able to note strange occurrences within his body, almost as though they weren't happening to him. Vegeta considered with surreal detachment the way the muscles in his dislocated arm tightened and the way his tail had unfurled from his waist and was twisting wildly. Then it ended. By the time the last of the horrible sensation faded, it was as though Vegeta had forgotten how to breathe. When he finally took in air, it was shakily; even the memory of the pain was enough to make it difficult. Freeza was speaking again, but the words were unintelligible to Vegeta at first.
"...of your simple-minded attempts to avoid the inevitable. If you wish to surprise me, Vegeta, you would do well to obey with no further resistance." Freeza’s voice was coming from behind him, and it took Vegeta a moment to realize he'd twisted in such a way that he was on his stomach, facing the side of the room behind the restraint table. His eyes took in the sight of the once-empty wall, now lined with a long row of numerous medical machines sitting dormant, waiting to be utilized. Vegeta's mind began to reel as he finally grasped his situation in entirety: regardless of anything Vegeta did, Freeza had no intention to kill him. Freeza must have known Vegeta was going to resist, but was apparently prepared to mend him until— when? Vegeta's insides lurched as he considered what Freeza could want from him.
Vegeta's attention was pulled from his horrified understanding by the sensation of Freeza's tail slowly wrapping around one of his ankles. Vegeta looked back, his clawed face smearing blood on his shoulder. Freeza dropped his voice to a whisper as his tail's grip tightened and he began to drag Vegeta back towards him.
"That you could change your base nature at will and become obedient would indeed make for a pleasantly unexpected change...then again, it would be such a waste if I were not able to share all of my ideas with you." Vegeta was once more at Freeza's feet, and the purple tip of Freeza's tail began to tighten its coil and snake further up Vegeta's leg. "And I have so many ideas..."
