Summary: Duo is living with Quatre and Trowa. But what no-one
realises is why. And what happens when they find out the truth,
especially Heero.

Chapter 6 – Under Attack
Trowa wandered down the quiet corridor. He had passed a few of the teams that were also scouting and had noticed the worried glances thrown at him. It seemed the title ‘Gundam pilot’ still held a certain amount of fear. Perhaps that wasn’t such a bad thing. He mentally checked off the numbers as each team reported in over the radio. It was becoming dull. He never thought Preventers would be this tedious and had no idea how Wufei and Heero kept at it. He wondered how his blonde lover was coping. He was sure Quatre would be nearly asleep by now. As boredom set in, Trowa began humming to himself various tunes that he and Quatre had played together on their respective instruments. It was either that or beginning a mantra that began ‘bo’ and ended ‘red’. It was as his mind began wandering to where some of those music sessions had ended, that he was brought to a halt with Heero’s voice.
“Group five report over…. Report in group five. Over.” Trowa waited for a reply but heard none. He heard Duo say he would look into it. As Duo’s joking voice was heard saying about the door, Trowa couldn’t hold back the snigger that escaped. He was bored; even Duo’s lamest jokes were funny when he was bored. But the next report quickly wiped out his humour.
“Agents. Code red. I repeat Code red. Enemy unknown. Breached security. Track them down.” Trowa quickly went into soldier mode despite that he had only one thing on his mind. He needed to get to Quatre. He quickly turned on his heel and made his way towards the board room.

As soon as the Preventers had gone, Quatre knew something was wrong. He tried to reach for his pistol.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you Mr Winner.” A deep voice warned behind him. He looked across the room to where he had been watching the other delegate. The man was pointing a gun at him now; he seemed much happier and calmer too. It gave Quatre chills. “Turn around slowly.” The voice behind him ordered. “And put your hands up so that I can see them.” Quatre complied, without a weapon he could hardly do anything else. As he turned, he saw the two remaining Preventers lying on the floor, both their throats slashed open. Other men stood over them, guns trained on the diplomats. The room was silent with horror. The Arabian closed his eyes in silence. He had thought he had left death such as this behind. Quatre finally faced the man who gave the orders. He seemed vaguely familiar “Hm. Typical. Preventers are so predictable, don’t you think? One slight diversion and they all run off to heroically save the day. Especially that fool, Yuy. Always has to be the knight in shining armour.” Quatre could see the obvious distaste for Heero. It was then that Quatre remembered him.
“I know you. You used to work for Preventers. Agent Simmons.” The man scowled at him.
“Until that Une bitch fired me. She didn’t like my ‘methods’.” The man held a gun to Quatre’s head. “Well now she can face the consequences.”
“What is it that you want?”
“Your death Mr Winner.” The reply was calm. “Why should we have delegates for peace when they are killers such as you? There is far too much blood on your hands Mr Winner. The death of a whole colony lies on your hands.” Quatre sighed sadly; he knew that to be true.
“I cannot deny that and I have never forgiven myself either. But it is because of that tragedy that I am working to keep peace. So that it will never happen again.”
“Shut up! Lies! It’s all lies! You’re nothing but a fucking Gundam Pilot. A god damn murderer! You killed my wife!” ‘And that’s what it comes down to’, Quatre thought wretchedly. It was all about revenge.
“So you want my death. Fine. But let everyone else go.” If he could prevent any more death then that would be something. The man smiled, his dark hair falling across his face. Quatre finally gave a name to the strange look the man had. He was completely mad. And yet sane enough to come up with this plan. It was the worst kind, men like him showed no mercy, nothing mattered to him anymore.
“Not a chance Mr Winner. They all followed you like little puppies. They are as bad as you are. They die too. And when I’m done with you I’ll make sure that Yuy follows. A Gundam Pilot should never have control over peace. It’s hypocritical. I might kill Chang too. Just to add a cherry to that icing.” Over his shoulder, Quatre saw another man enter the room. ‘So that’s how they got in. Through the ventilation shafts. And I can’t get any information to Heero. I’m sorry that it’s going to end this way Trowa. I love you so much. And Duo… I hope you can find happiness.’

Heero had thought the conference had been going well…a little too well. So when group five failed to report, he wasn’t that surprised. Duo’s description however, seriously disturbed him. Whoever had infiltrated the building knew what they were doing. The fact that they had just taken out four top Preventers agents, meant they were a serious threat. Heero didn’t like this one bit. He sent hand signals to Quatre, using what they had learned in the war. Quatre blinked in comprehension. It was subtle enough that no one else would pick up on it. Heero knew Quatre could look after himself. He followed the group of Preventers out the room, while nodding at the two that remained.
He took a quick sigh of relief as he stood outside, despite the accumulating tension. Being stuck in a room with a bunch of stiffs really was not his idea of fun… a certain blonde excluded. Heero didn’t understand how Quatre did it. He had a lot of respect for the Arabian. But now to more pressing matters. He indicated for some of his team to go in a different direction, and then headed in Duo’s direction himself with the rest of the team. As they started to make a move, the braided man’s voice yelled over the radio,
“Heero! I really need some help here!” The former Wing pilot heard the shots from down the corridor as well as over the radio. There was only a slight pause in his step before he sped up. He removed his gun from its home on his hip and took off the safety. His face became the mask of concentration that he had worn over the war.
“On my way Duo.” This had just got personal.

Duo gritted his teeth and turned to fire off a few more shots. He had killed one and injured at least one other. His skills were not what they used to be and one against ten was hardly fair when you don’t have a Gundam. He hoped he hadn’t sounded desperate when he had called for Heero. He was desperate, but that wasn’t the point. Neither was the fact that he wanted to see the Japanese man again. That little thought nearly cost him his arm as he just managed to duck back behind his cover. They were good. Too damn good. It was like they were soldiers or something. He just about managed to suppress the happiness at hearing Heero’s voice once more, the shot that came very close to his arm again helped though.
“Duo. We’re right near you. As far as we can tell, as were guessing that the guys with their backs to us firing off shots aren’t exactly friendly.” Ok, so when did Heero Yuy get a sense of humour?
The sound of other shots being fired and men crying out in pain as they were immobilized, was music to Duo’s ears, though Heero’s voice was more like a warm relaxing soak in the bath. He quickly brought that thought to a halt. Too many issues with that image, especially of the tail variety as well as… other things. As the rest of the rebel group were taken care of, Duo slid down to the floor. He knew he had a lucky miss this time.
“You ok?” The voice above startled him. As he looked up his gaze was locked with intense Prussian clouded with concern.
“Yeah. I’m fine. You know me. Running and hiding.” Heero looked at the small pillar that Duo had been hiding behind.
“More like running in the wrong direction.” His fingers ran over the pockmarks that had dented the American’s cover. “You were lucky you know. A fraction more and these would have hit you Duo.”
“Why Mr Yuy. You sound concerned.” Without missing a heartbeat Heero replied,
“I am.” Duo’s mouth hung open in shock. Heero gave him a smile. This didn’t help Duo’s fish like state. It made Heero’s smile broaden. He offered his hand to help the former Deathscythe pilot up. Duo gingerly took it. As he was pulled up, the braided one stumbled slightly, straight into Heero’s arms. He froze in shock. Heero just gazed at him. Their embrace was suddenly interrupted by Wufei’s voice over the radio.
Any good? Let me know! ^_^
