Kai sat straight up in his bed, not quite managing to hold back a muffled scream. He was covered in sweat, and his heart was racing away in his chest. For a long time he just sat there, crimson eyes wide in panic. When his body slowly let go of the tension, he rubbed his face with a shaking hand and sighed.
((Another night ruined. How many hours... three and a half... lovely.))
He sighed again and got out of bed. At first he thought about turning on the TV in his bedroom, but he didn't have a DVD connected to it, and the only kind of programs on at this hour was porn. And that, he didn't feel like watching. He had never really got why people got their freak on by watching other people have sex. So much more fun to do it yourself. And Tala had been all he could ever need in that department. The wolf was nearly insatiable in that area, and he went along with everything. Kai knew people saw him as the obvious bottom in their relationship, but that wasn't really the case. Tala wanted to dominate, he wanted Kai to submit. But the phoenix did have a will of his own, and Tala had to battle every time to be on top. And he didn't always come out the winner. Far from it, actually.
((Don't go there, Kai Hiwatari! The last thing you need is to think about your obsessive jealous ex, naked and underneath you.))
He needed something to keep his head occupied, and the answer was really given. He pulled on a pair of black sweatpants, but didn't bother with a top, and headed out to the living room. After making sure that the door to Hilary's room was closed, he turned on a light and began to paint. The light was not enough to illuminate the room, but he really didn't need much of it anyway. The crimson eyes had perfect night-vision, courtesy of Balkov Abbey and a bunch of mad scientists. The painting of Melody had been finished a week earlier, and now hung on his wall, behind the TV – where it was always visible. The new, blank canvas took on a pitch black color, and after that he didn't really know what he painted. His brain shut off, and his arm moved on its own, making fluid and precise strokes across the surface in front of him. He didn't even notice the sun rising above the horizon, or that the day, a Sunday again, came crawling over him.
The weeks weren't that bad. He kept himself occupied, teaching his talented students and bitching with businesspeople all over the world. There didn't seem to be enough hours of the day to cram all his responsibilities into a manageable schedule. And if he had a spare moment, it was spent with Hilary and Melody. While Hilary had had some serious bitch tendencies in her teenage years, especially towards him (well, before she lost her virginity to the stunning Russian, that is), she had become a wonderful person now. And the way she raised her daughter, so gently but so securely – it made his heart warm. Had he been straight and had a child with someone, he wished it would have been someone like this new Hilary. Not her. She was, in his mind, always Tyson's. But someone with the same sparkling but mild personality. Yes, the weeks he could endure. But the weekends... when he had nothing to do, the darkness slipped a little closer. And it was even more hard to sleep then, ‘cause he knew he didn't have to be up at dawn to go for a run, or assault his sandbag before making breakfast and preparing everything for the day. People were supposed to sleep in late on weekends, and Kai was utterly incapable of doing that. He was woken from his trance-like state when he heard Hilary come out from their room.
“Good morning, Kai, what are you-” she didn't finish the sentence. Instead she gasped. Kai looked at her, and then looked back at his painting. His brows shot straight up. On the black background was a royal blue eye, tears of blood ran from it down in to darkness. In the middle of the pupil was a skull with vicious fangs, also crying blood. There was something deeply menacing about the picture, apart from the macabre motif. There was a feeling in the air around it, and it did not feel good.
“Oh, fuck!” Kai blurted out, and took the paining down – leaning it against the wall, with the picture facing said wall. “Sorry, Hil.”
“I'm not surprised that some of your works are very dark, Kai,” she said. “Your art is beautiful, even when it's scary. It must have taken hours to paint! How long have you been up?”
Kai frowned and looked around him. The sunlight flooded his apartment, indicating that the day was upon him.
“What time is it?” he asked.
“10:30 a. m.”
“7 hours,” he said. “I've been up since about 3:30.”
“Don't you ever sleep?”
“No. Not much anyway.” He sighed. “I don't like to admit it, but I never sleep more than maybe three or four hours a night when I sleep alone. Tala is the only one who can make me sleep longer. It's just something with his presence that calms me.”
“You miss him,” she said softly.
“I do.” He looked lost in thoughts for a moment. “I miss who he used to be. I miss my quirky, cocky and seriously disturbed Tala. The guy who made me laugh, when no one else could – or even thought I knew what a smile was. The one who made me feel at home, and taught me that it's ok to be small and scared sometimes. That love is strength, not a weakness. I miss the softness he had to him, the one only I ever got to see. I miss him waking me up in the middle of the night, just because he had to tell me he loved me. The guy who crushed our fangirls' dreams to pieces, by mentioning that I was way out of their league, and that they couldn't match up to him anyway. Always with that psycho grin on his face.” His eyes became a bit red around the edges, and Hilary put a hand on his shoulder.
“He is still in there somewhere,” she said. “He just has to realize it himself.”
“And if he never does? The Tala I broke up with is not the Tala I gave my heart to. This Tala is everything that was bad about my Tala. During the last six months we were together, more and more of him morphed into that... that thing that looked like him, but wasn't.” He drew a shaky breath. “This s not a good day, Hil. I think I'll go back to bed. I don't want Mel to see me like this.” He walked back to his room and quietly closed the door behind him. Hilary could make out the faint sound of crying. She sighed and went to prepare breakfast.
Kai's cellphone rang, and he took a few deep breaths to collect himself. He forced the sobbing tendencies away from his voice and answered.
“Hn?”
/Hey boss./ Andrés voice said. /Mission accomplished! Tyson Granger left Scotland for Tokyo at 10 p. m. last night. He took his father along for the ride./
“Thank you, André. But why did it take so long?”
/Flight strike. No planes went anywhere until his flight took off yesterday./
“I see. Well, you'll have you salary transferred to your account within 24 hours.”
/You're the man, boss! I can give you an update on the whereabouts of Tala Ivanov as well./
“Ok, where is he?”
/Still in Hong Kong. Our guys reports that he is on sick leave, along with three of your other chiefs. He spends most of his time in his home, and he doesn't look like he's in any condition to go anywhere at the moment./
“Why is that?”
/He seems to alternate being drunk, passed out, hungover or unconscious from being beaten up by the three other men. Should we intervene?/
“No. It's their way of making him come to his senses. They are brought up with violence as the first choice of method when it comes to dealing with people. Tala is used to it. We all are.”
/Uhm... Ok, boss. I'll take your word for it. Need anything else, boss?/
“Not at the moment. Good job as always.”
/Alright. Ciao!/
He hung up, and placed the phone back on his bedside table. A small smile appeared on his lips. The guys were giving Tala a piece of their minds. It was a comfort to know that they had his back. He lay down on his back and rested his head on his hands. The darkness was there, just at the corner of his eye, and the searing pain began to make itself known again. He needed to sleep. It could keep the darkness away from him for a while. It was easier to stay stable when he could sleep. The door to his room suddenly opened, and he heard small footsteps across the floor. A small figure crawled up on the bed and sat down next to him. He turned his head and looked at Melody's big blue eyes.
“Are you sad?” she asked. He sat up as well and stroked her little head.
“A little,” he admitted. “What you got there?” he asked and pointed to something she had in her arms, behind the Dranzer plushie. She gave it to him, and placed herself in his lap. It was the album. A shot of pain ran through him, and he wanted to cry. She opened it and looked at the first picture. It showed Tala and Kai in a park. Tala sat leaning against a tree, and Kai rested his head in the wolf's lap. Tala was stroking his slate hair and looked like he was saying something to the phoenix, with a mischievous smile on his face. Kai looked up at him with a soft smile.
“Who is he?” Melody asked. “Did you like him?”
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “That's Tala. I was going to marry him.”
“He looks mean.”
Kai raised a brow at the girl's remark. He looked closer at the photo. Yeah, if you didn't know Tala, you would have thought he looked mean on that picture. But, that was the exact moment Tala had said the three magic words 'I love you'. His voice had been so soft, despite his rather jadish smile. They had been together a month to the day, when the photo was taken. He remembered that people had stared at them when they walked past the Russians, and that Bryan had snapped at a pair of homophobes who gave a nasty remark. It was Ian that had taken the picture, because the usual photographer was being wrestled to the ground by Spencer – so that he didn't cause any damage to people or objects. Or throwing objects at people.
“He isn't mean, Mel,” he said. “He is a wonderful person. He just doesn't look it.”
“He looks like daddy. Did he hurt you too? Like daddy does to mommy?”
Kai didn't know what to answer to that question. Tala had hurt him alright. In many many ways. But Kai wasn't an innocent victim. He had thrown his fair share of punches and kicks. How was he to explain to this little emotionally scarred child about the amount of violence included in his life? Melody seemed to have noticed his long silence, because she turned and hugged him.
“I won't let the mean wolfie man hurt you!” she stated. “He makes you sad. Daddy makes mommy sad. I don't want you to be sad.”
“It's ok, Mel,” he said and hugged her back. “Look at the other pictures. He is a good person, but he has been through a lot of horrible things. So he's a bit hard to get close to.” Melody turned around and looked at the other pictures, slowly turning the pages. She stopped and stared at a picture of the phoenix and the wolf kissing each other.
“Eww!” she exclaimed.
“What's wrong, Mel?” He looked at the picture, and chuckled.
“The wolfie man is kissing you! Eww!”
“People do that when they are in love.”
“Did you like it when he did that?”
Kai choked, and blushed. What to answer to that one? Well, yeah. Kissing Tala was the most insanely pleasurable thing to do. Next after the naughty stuff. How would he explain how his knees went weak and his blood caught fire, even during such an innocent and sweet kiss as the one on the photo?
“Yeah, I did,” he managed to say finally.
“Mommy doesn't like when daddy does that.”
((Oh, so that's why she asked.))
“I liked to kiss Tala because I loved him, and he loved me. Your mommy doesn't like your daddy kissing her because he is mean to you.”
“Daddy says he's allowed to do that because we belong to him. Why does he say that?”
Kai turned her around and looked into her sad eyes.
“Listen to me, Mel,” he said. “No one is allowed to be mean to you. No one. Ever. And you and your mommy do not belong to him. You can never own another person. He thinks he can own you if he makes you scared of him. And that is not ok.”
Melody's little lip began to tremble and he pulled her closer and rocked her back and forth in a soothing way.
“I'm scared,” she whimpered. “I don't like him. I don't want him to hurt mommy...”
“I'm not going to let him hurt you again,” he whispered. “Ok, Mel? He will not be able to hurt you as long as I breathe. I will make sure of that.”
“What if he hurts you?” the little girl was sobbing, tears wetting his chest.
“He cannot hurt me. No matter what he does, he can't hurt me.”
Melody's small arms held a firm grip around his chest, and she kept crying for a while, before the sobs died off and he realized that the little girl had gone to sleep. Sighing, he lifted her up and carried her out to the living room and put her down on the couch and pulled a blanket over her. Hilary came out from the kitchen and looked at the stunning Russian as he placed the plushie next to her and stroked the blonde hair. He looked filled with pain, and his eyes were red-rimmed. He looked over at her, and she wasn't surprised he knew she was there. Kai always knew where people were. She walked up to him and threw a quick glance at her daughter's sleeping form.
“Are you ok?” she asked. “I shouldn't have let her in there, but she wanted to ask you about the album. And she seemed to know you were sad.”
“It's ok, Hil,” he said in his low voice. “I'm just having one of those moments when everything hurts. And I really really want to murder her father right now. It's inexcusable to put his own child through this. To make her this scared and sad.”
Hilary's eyes filled up with tears and she looked away.
“You think I'm a fool for staying this long with him, don't you?” she whispered. Kai pulled her close and held her there.
“No, Hil. I don't. Miguel is the fool for treating you this way. But this time, Hil, it doesn't matter if he finds you. Because I will not let my goddaughter go back to his house. I promised Mel that I won't let him hurt you or her as long as there is still air in my lungs.”

“This is ridiculous.”
“Excuse me, Mr. Ivanov?” Tala looked over at the chubby French man further down the table. “I do believe that my calculations-”
“Are a complete disaster,” Tala snorted. “Not only is your proposition far out of line for what the Hiwatari Corp stands for, and strives to achieve. Your numbers do not add up. Mr. Kuznetsov here has looked over your so called budget, and it is not at all satisfying.”
“If you try to stick to that budget, Mr. Bresson,” Bryan said. “Your company will be bankrupt within six months. If you're lucky. A more realistic guess would be more in the line of three months. The Hiwatari Corp expects it's affiliated companies to deliver and keep up the business level of the other companies involved. You do have a good sketch of an idea, however, it is not viable by a long shot. We can not allow this kind of weak calculations to work their way in to this corporation.”
The French businessman, and his entourage, seemed to be on the verge of an attack. Tala pinned his blue orbs to the other man.
“Even if your numbers would add up,” he said. “Your ethical stand is not one we support. You use forced labor, and child workers. That is unacceptable. None of the other affiliated companies do that, and Mr. Hiwatari has made it very clear that such low views on the value of human lives are not fitting to do business with.”
Mr. Bresson was reaching a scarlet red color on his skin, and he was positively seething. He looked at the redheaded man sitting in his chair a bit laid back, looking at him with mild distaste.
“You are a collection of hypocrites!” he exclaimed. “I know who you are and where you came from! You are nothing more than a bunch of murderers trying to look like you're normal people. You're lowlifes! No better than the mafia, which I'm sure you do business with.”
Bryan growled, but Tala gave a little wave that shut him up.
“Is that so, Mr. Bresson?” he said coolly. “Then why on earth do you feel that you can insult us, and Mr. Hiwatari, this way?”
The man went a bit pale. Tala sat up straight in his chair and raised a brow. His gaze pierced through the sweating man.
“I'm afraid that you don't have the vaguest conception under God what you speak of. No, we are not normal people. We were abused throughout our entire childhood. Therefore, we will not stand behind anyone who puts another human being through something like that. And for further notice, we do not do business with the mafia. We do not feel the need to sink to that level. And they cannot offer us anything that we cannot achieve ourselves legally.” He pushed the button on the intercom placed before him on the table. “Mrs. Inevska, would you please escort Mr. Bresson and his associates out? The meeting is over. Thank you.”
Moments later, an older woman in a strict suit-dress and a stern look on her face showed up.
“Mr. Bresson,” she said. “Follow me.” The french businessman and his crew got up from their chairs and marched out of the conference room. Tala and Bryan let out a long breath as soon as the door had closed behind them. The wolf rubbed his temples and frowned.
“Seriously, Bry,” he said. “That is the third time he's tried to get us to sign his company to us. What's wrong with him? 'No' is two letters. How the fuck can he not understand that?”
“He's French,” Bryan said. “That means he is physically incapable of understanding the word 'no'. And I've heard from the guys at Takahashi Inc. that he's tried his nagging at them too. But he got the same reply. No one wants to do business with him.” The falcon grinned. “Next time he comes, we'll schedule a meeting with Mr. Hiwatari himself. That oughta make the fucker scarred for life – and hopefully make him stop trying to do any business ever again.”
Tala chuckled.
“Yeah. Let Kai give the man a single one of his death glares and the man will go to a mental ward. It would be so fucking hilarious to watch.” He looked at his watch. “Time to go home. God, this day felt like it took a century to pass.”
“Yeah. Bresson is a pain in the ass to listen to. Let's go. Ian's got hold of a new video game. It's going to be released to the public next year.”
“What is it?”
“The hell was it called again...?” Bryan scratched his head as they walked out of the room. “Don't fucking remember, but it's supposed to be some sort of mix between Silent Hill and Alone in the dark. And a shitload scarier.”
“I'm in.”
They met up with Spencer and Ian in the lobby at the ground floor. Ian was just stuffing his laptop into his briefcase and cursing under his breath. Spencer was on his phone. He nodded at his friends as they came closer.
“Charity ball” he asked the person on the other end. “Yeah, that can be done. What purpose this time? Against child abuse? I don't think I even need to call Mr. Hiwatari. The corporation will do it gladly. Have your people call my assistant tomorrow morning to arrange a meeting. Then we'll go over the details. Thank you. Good day.” He looked down at Ian, who was still cursing. “The hell's your problem?”
“A fucking virus,” Ian snarled. “We got a rookie down at the IT unit. He claims to be a top graduate from MIT, but that I told him to shove up his ass. He managed to crack open a quarantine program where we had a virus stored. We were going to analyze it, but when the fuckhead destroyed the quarantine it uploaded itself in the entire fucking system. Every single fucking hard drive down there is fucked so far up their asses that they're beyond rescue. And the shittiest thing is, that the virus knocked out the security system. I gotta call Kai first thing when we get home and get him to give an all clear to replace the whole shit. Fast as hell.”
“What about the back up programs?” Bryan asked as they walked out to the awaiting car.
“They fried too.”
“Aw, fuck,” Tala sighed. “Kai is not going to like that!”
“Nope,” Spencer agreed. “So, what did you do to the moron who did that?”
“I put him off duty until further notice. And I told him that Mr. Hiwatari would probably like to have a word with him. The kid fainted.”
They laughed and got in the streamline black limo. When they arrived at the fourteen story building – owned by Kai himself – containing their eleven room penthouse, Spencer turned to the others.
“I aint cooking today, guys,” he said. “I got a shitting headache. So, we're ordering take away tonight.”
“As long as it aint Chinese!” Ian stated. “We've ordered Chinese the last three times we had take out.”
“Thai?” Bryan suggested.
“Greek?” Tala said. “Or sushi, perhaps?”
It took them the entire elevator ride to agree on what to eat. It ended up being Thai and sushi. And after a voting, Tala was selected to 'go fetch the damned grub before we die of starvation'. He changed his suit to a pair of bleached jeans and a t-shirt, and headed back down to ground level. When he stepped out through the front doors, he bumped into someone, knocking the person over.
“Rei?” he blurted out, and extended a hand to help the neko to his feet. His hand was not accepted. Rei stood up and looked at the wolf, golden eyes angry.
“I know what you think I did with Kai,” he said, harshly. Tala's mouth dropped. “And I want to make it perfectly clear to you that I have never been attracted to him, or him to me. Kai is like my big brother, and he is the only one I have to rely on. Mariah and Kevin are to busy with their family. Lee...” he trailed off and took a deep breath. “The reason I was so devastated when Lee died is because we got engaged two weeks before the crash. Lee was my everything. Just like you were Kai's everything. He used a phrase to describe his feelings for you once, and I think it's good for you to hear it. He said; 'Tala is the air in my lungs and the beat of my heart. There has never been anyone but him, nor will there ever be'. Do you even understand how bad you hurt him with your jealousy? The idea, just the fucking idea of cheating on you, made him sick. And you are a twisted fucking bastard to even think that of him!”
“Rei, I-” He began but shut his mouth when Rei gave out a hiss.
“You don't own Kai Hiwatari. No one can own him. You of all people should know that. He was pissed when he left, and he is till pissed.”
“Left? Still pissed?” Tala looked at him in disbelief. “You know where he is?”
“Yeah, I know where he is. But I am not telling you that, you fucker. He is starting over, and he doesn't need anymore of your drama and vile fucking behavior in his life.” He pushed Tala away and started walking down the street. “Just wanted to make it clear to you. You are, and have always been a rotten bastard. Kai is out of your league, and he deserves better.” The feline turned a corner, and was gone. Tala just stared after him for a long time.
((Rei was engaged to Lee? Rei couldn't care less about Kai's body... He was engaged to someone else. Oh, dear God! I've fucked my life over completely! I have got to get him back somehow. I gotta get him back. He is my everything too.))
His phone rang.
/Where's the food already?/ Ian growled on the other end.
“On its fucking way, shorty! Go chew on Bry if you gotta eat something!”
