Duo was the way they left him, laying on his stomach so that his position doesn’t hinder the wings protruding from his back. However, now, Duo’s back was smooth and unmarked. The wings had vanished into thin air. Was it a hallucination? Was it a dream? All of them saw it.
“What’s going on here?” Wufie demanded.
“I don’t know” Heero replied, not liking the fact that there was something he didn’t know the answer to.
Sally Approached the unconscious boy, putting her medic bag down on the floor. She then opened it to retrieve a pair of latex gloves. She snapped them on and went to work. She carefully rolled the light sheet off of Duo’s still form. If that was Duo’s blood spattered all over in the other room, then he must have had a serious injury she didn’t want to jar, but upon further examination, she didn’t see one open wound on Duo’s body that would indicate the source of the spatter except for the angry scars on his arms.
“Can someone tell me what went on in the other room?” Sally finally asked after giving Duo another once over and pulling back the sheets to cover his feverish body.
“We don’t know, Quatre was the only one who saw the whole thing. We only arrived and saw the aftermath. Its best you go talk to Quatre” Wufie said. “When you hear what he has to say, you might think he is crazy, I mean, we would have if we didn’t see it with our own eyes.”
“Alright then, since Duo doesn’t seem to be in any immediate danger, I will hear what Quatre has to say before I take any further actions” Sally said taking off her gloves and tossing them into the nearby garbage bin. Sally closed her medic bag and took one last look at Duo’s sleeping form before exiting the room with Wufie and Heero in tow.
“I don’t understand,” Wufie mumbled to himself, but Heero heard this and gave Wufie an assuring nod that he wasn’t the only one lost. “I’m telling you there were wings, white wings almost this long” Wufie said out loud this time, showing his arm span of how long they were. “there is no way they could have disappeared without leaving a mark!”
“Lets talk to Quatre first” Sally said softly. There was no reason for them to be making up the story even though they are still in shock that they found Duo after all these years.
They turned the corner and knocked on the polished red oak wood door. A rustling noise could be heard behind the closed door before Trowa opened the door to see who had knocked.
“Sally wanted to speak with Quatre about-“
“Come in” Trowa replied before Wufie could finish. Trowa stepped aside so that the 3 could enter the room.
Quatre was sitting on the couch next to the window looking outside and took a sip of his cooling tea. He gave a small smile, color returning to his pale face after quite a bit of scare earlier.
“I’m not going crazy. I know what I saw, what we all saw” Quatre said softly before anyone said a word. Never averting his eyes from the window as the 3 new occupants sat across from him on a long 4 seat sofa. “He was like an angel fallen from heaven and back into our arms” His eyes started to mist over, tears threatening to spill if it wasn’t for Trowa’s reassuring hand on his shoulder, Quatre felt as if he really was losing it.
“Quatre, it’s not that I don’t believe you, I assure you, I do. However, we just went to see Duo and there wasn’t a mark on his back indicating that there was anything that could have caused such trauma as seen in the other room” Sally said. “Tell me exactly what you were doing when it happened”
Quatre gave a small nod, fiddling with the half empty cup in his hands. Quatre let out a heavy sigh as if he was holding his breath for some time. He started to tell Sally what happened to his best ability. He was only a few minutes into the incident when they all heard a thump. Everyone froze.
“What was that?” Sally said in a hush voice.
Again, there was another thump. This caused Heero to jump up from his seat and rushed out of the room. As if Heero was the trigger, everyone followed suit, running down the long corridor and to Duo’s room where the thumping was louder.
When they turned the corner, they saw Heero crouching on the floor trying to gather up Duo into his arms. Duo was awake and in hysteria. His arms were bent in an awkward angle trying to tear at his raw back. Heero tried to grab at Duo’s hands before the other did further damage to themselves all the more trying to sooth Duo to calm down.
“A little help here?” Heero called over his shoulder.
Quatre, Wufie and Trowa jumped in, each able to grab a hold of one of Duo’s flaying arms each and hold down his legs. This didn’t help much. Instead, it caused Duo to squirm around more. His screams were hoarse. Sally dropped her medic bag and opened it, rummaging around until she found a syringe and a bottle of sedatives. She quickly filled the syringe up with the necessary dosage and rushed over to Duo. Finding a spot on his bullocks, Sally quickly injected the sedative into Duo’s system. Duo must have felt the initial penetration because his body went limp in Heero’s arms. Head shaking from side to side and tears now streaming down his face, Heero can read Duo’s lips repeating “no” over and over again and it broke his heart to see Duo so broken. This made Heero feel more protective of the fragile man in his arms. Trowa, Quatre, and Wufie slowly let go of Duo’s arms and legs when he showed no signs of further struggling.
“Let’s get him dressed. We are taking him to a private hospital” Sally said getting up from her kneeling position on the floor and brushing a few strands of loose hair from her face. “I am going to personally perform a full examination of Duo’s mental and physical state.”
No one refuted the decision. There was something wrong with Duo and they need to find out what that is and what the next step is to bring Duo back to them. The Duo they all once knew and loved, even though the chance of that is looking grim at the moment, they still need to try. If not for their sake, for Heero’s.
