I have been accused of plagiarism. Because I took a few ideas about the Fey from another writer and put it into my story. Never mind the fact that the characters are totally different. Never mind that the plot is wholly different from Laurell K Hamilton’s. There IS no race for the throne, there is no bevy of male guards for my character to sleep with. The only similarities are that of the Fey marrying for children, and the Wine of Prurience does bear some resemblance to Bronwyn’s Tears, but hello, so did Love Potion Number Nine. Okay, so we’re getting to the glowing skin and the multi-colored eyes. I am guilty of that one. So fucking shoot me. To claim that I would come back and say that “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about” is childish. I think that you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Perhaps the creators of Dungeons and Dragons were plagiarizing Tolkien. Perhaps the creators of the Vampire the Masquerade and Anne Rice were plagiarizing Stoker. That is, in effect, what I have been accused of. Dragon Lance, Wheel of Time, and other fantasy mythos “borrow” and build off the other’s ideas. They have created their own world, borrowing from others.
I don’t really care that one person has called me a plagiarist. Go jump in the Bog of Eternal Stench without anything to plug your nose. If I am a plagiarist, then why is it called FanFic? If it is so obvious that I am using Merry’s world, then IT IS fanfic. Like everything else on this site.
