Chapter 7: Search and Rescue


Hakuro was pissed and slammed his fist on his desk. Soldiers lined up around him as orders were screamed, making any man close to him deaf. One of the soldiers looked Hakuro in the eyes then faced back towards the floor. The ground never seemed interesting until now. “I gave you fucking jobs to find two simple alchemists and you can’t do that right! I want both Elrics found and shot on sight! Leave Mustang to me, but if anyone finds him first, shoot him as well. I don’t want hesitation! I want them dead before anything is found out!”

Hakuro was fuming furiously as he leaned back in his chair. “Anyone who disobeys orders will be shot as well. I want a country search for them and no one is to rest until they are found. Dismissed.” He watched as the soldiers filed out and marched into the streets. As long as the babies were still in his possession then the “parents” would come back. Hakuro smirked as he could imagine Edward’s face now. How delightful to see horror written across the young features. ‘You just wait Edward, how you escaped I don’t know. But I will find you and break your ass completely.’ Hakuro chuckled as he sat upright and got up from his desk. He would take a stroll to calm and return later.

The installments hadn’t been easy on Edward but he bared the pain. Grit your fucking teeth and bare it. He watched out the window as the last of the installments were made and jumped off the table. He thanked Winry and shut the door behind him as he went down the hallway. He made it to the foyer of the front door before a hand reached out and grabbed him. “And where do you think you are going?” A deep and firm voice asked.

“I’m going for a walk, I need the air Roy. With all the anger and worrying building up, I need something to help me take the stress off. I’ll be back soon,” Edward kissed Roy as he made his way out into the cold and snow. The weather had turned ragged only a day or two ago which made everything harder to do. He looked towards the sky as flakes fell once more. He shivered as a cold air hit him suddenly and pulled his red coat closer to his body. Central streets seem so empty now since everyone was either away or inside.

It seemed as though the search for him and Roy both ceased. Normally you would hear or see bustle on the streets but not on a cold day. Seems as though the military isn’t as stupid as he thought. Only a few cars were out as he noticed a few pass by. Edward sighed as everything seemed to be just going downhill. His nightmares relived themselves night after night of either Hakuro or the babies getting tortured.

Lost in thought, he ran into someone and immediately apologized. He looked up from his daze and realized that he was in the very center of Central. All the shops surrounding him along with several people.


“Isn’t that the Elric brother Hakuro is looking for?” One man asked a woman beside him. The woman only shrugged her shoulders and continued to stare at the blonde.

This in time caught a nearby soldier’s attention and that led to a barrage of bullets that were let out. The civilians running around rapidly trying to dodge the onslaught of bullets. Edward in the meantime cussed himself out for being so careless and ducked behind a nearby wall. “Fuck, I’m going to die here unless I do something.” With quick thinking, he clapped his hands and placed them on the ground. He smiled as a huge cannon emerged from under his feet, carrying him several feet in the air. He watched as some brave soldiers stood their ground and shoot aimlessly at him and few others ran. He let off a cannon ball and watched as several building crumbled and several soldiers blown away. He made a run for it from then on through alleyways. They had to lead back to home somewhat. “Dammit, fucking dammit! How could I be so stupid?” Edward degraded himself as he ran for his life. Noticing he was only a few blocks away from home and soldiers still following him, he made a makeshift “Edward” as he plummeted into a sewer below. Hopefully it would give him enough time as he made his way back.

He popped up from another sewer five blocks away and smiled at his plan. It got him home free and untouched, now only if he could get back to the house without being seen. Slowly he lifted the sewer lid up and noticed it was clear and jumped out quickly, making his way back to the house. Instead of going in the front way, he made his way to the house through the back and jumped the fence.

He plopped himself on the couch and looked around. No one appeared to be home, but to be sure he intently listened for the supposed footsteps of anyone. Getting real annoyed with the silence he called out “hey Al! Have you seen today’s newspaper? I can’t find the damned thing anywhere.” No answer. “Okay guys, I get it. Edward wanders off on a walk by himself and doesn’t tell anyone where he’s going. Enough with the silence already its killing me!” Still no answer, something was definitely wrong.

Edward finally decided that enough was enough and went exploring upstairs first. He checked in two of the rooms and found them empty. “Alphonse must’ve went out with Winry, neither of them are here.” Something was really wrong if Roy wasn’t here. He made his way down the hallway ad then made note as a door was opening. Deciding that it was Roy he finally found, he put his face in one of his gloved hands and bowed his head. “You know you guys really gave me a scare when I came home to a silenced-” He looked up in time see Hakuro standing in the doorway instead of Roy.

Edward slowly backed into one of the walls nearby and slid down it. He knew that fighting with Hakuro would only cause harm to Roy, Alphonse, and Winry. “I don’t understand how you found us again.”

Hakuro only chuckled and answer in a smooth tone “well Edward, one of the soldiers informed me of your little trip to town today. And saw you going back in the general direction of the Colonel’s house. How stupid do you think we are?”

“Pretty stupid if you ask me. Remember I used to be one of you, but at least I was brighter than any of you dimwitted assholes like yourself,” Edward spat back in Hakuro’s face. “Any of you higher ups are pieces of shit and think you are better than anyone else. Go ahead and do your worst.”

“Now now Edward, do you really want to say such things that might put your husband at risk?” Hakuro grabbed Edward up by his jacket and pulled him under his arm. Edward was really getting tired of Hakuro, without hesitation he transmuted his automail arm into his handblade and sliced clean through Hakuro’s neck. He jumped quickly from his captor’s grip and watched as his body fell in a pool of blood. He would regret this later but not now. He stayed long enough to watch Hakuro die and drown in his own blood.

They have to have Roy, Alphonse, and Winry somewhere close by because they would never leave Hakuro on his own. He checked every room this time, making note of every place within. Finally he reached the master bedroom and looked all around on the inside. He had found Roy who was tied up in the bathroom. Making quick work of the rope he untied Roy and unbound his gag. “Roy where is everyone?”

“They’re in the basement. Ed, where is Hakuro?” Roy asked as Edward gave him a timid look.

“Just follow behind me, you’ll get your answer soon enough,” Edward’s voice turned very desolate and deep right there, meaning something he did was wrong.

Roy followed Edward into the hallway and noticed blood in the floor. Roy had to muffle a gasp as Hakuro’s body came into view, the bastard deserved death anyways. They passed the body and made their way down to the basement for whatever surprise held them there.

The basement was as dark as ever when they descended the steps. Gagged noises could be heard from a far off corner, which made Edward run for them as fast as he could. Bending to his knees in front of his brother, he untied both Winry and Alphonse. Winry gasped for air as Alphonse recollected himself and stood, brushing the dirt from Winry and himself.

“Brother, any news on the babies yet?” Alphonse asked in a hushed tone.

Edward shook his head and looked back to Roy. “Shall we get going to look for Hawkeye and Breda?”

Roy looked down and over to the basement door. It was a hard decision due to soldiers crowding the place and a fight breaking out in Central streets if they were caught walking them. Sighing, Roy placed his right hand on Edward’s shoulder. “I guess we should make a move out and hope for the best. Let’s try to sneak into Central HQ tonight, that way no one can get spotted in the dark and less people are around to notice. For now we need a place to lie low until then. Alphonse, do you have any suggestions?”

“Seeming as we are still welcome to the Hughes’ household, why don’t we stop by there until then?” Alphonse suggested and everyone nodded. Maes lived the closest from Central HQ, making it an easier trip on them.

Gracia smiled as hurried knocks came from the front door. “I’m coming just give me a sec!” A friendly voice sounded beyond the door. The knob turned slightly as Gracia opened the door and brushing off the apron she was wearing. Roy bowed low, apologizing for the sudden drop by. Gracia excused it and smiled. “So what brings you here?”

“We just thought we would stop by and see you and Elysia,” Edward kind of lied. They were there for different reasons but he liked to see Mrs. Hughes once in a while. Elysia ran to the door and tugged on Edward’s pants, he looked down and smiled gently picking up Elysia. She giggled and smiled as he held her close.

“Well thank you Edward, but where are the babies? I would think you’d bring them along.” Edward’s head bowed slightly and Roy cupped his shoulder.

Roy cleared his throat and looked Gracia in the eyes. “The military found out and somehow got a hold of them, we are currently looking for them,” Roy started to trail off as he tried to be strong. Not for himself only but for Edward more, he had been the one to mother them.

“Oh..well how long have they been missing?” Gracia asked sweetly, she was only concerned especially when it came to Edward and Al. She noticed as Edward’s shoulders began shaking slightly. He had so much on him and still trying to be strong, it took a lot to do that.

Roy got up from the couch and motioned for Gracia to meet him in the kitchen. She nodded and followed him, it was for the better. Roy rounded back and faced her as he leaned on the counter. “They have been missing for months now. Hakuro threw a fit when Ed and I found out, he tried everything in his power to stop us. Hawkeye and Breda are currently on a Search and Rescue mission to bring the babies back safely.”

“Hawkeye, I think I found something,” Breda called her over and she inspected several pictures and test results. It seemed strange enough that these kids resembled Roy and Edward so much. Not much was being shown but Riza had a good idea that these were the babies, but more grown. From these photos no experiments were performed at all.

Riza nodded at Breda and they picked up the pictures and files and slipped them beneath her military jacket. They moved quickly through the basement of Central HQ, where secret labs were held. Breda moved down another hallway and entered a large chamber with all sorts of creatures in cages. Breda cringed at what some looked like and wondered if the kids were experimented on but showed no signs. They passed the cages as the creatures growled and furthered themselves along a narrow hallway. It led to huge doors at the end with little light showing. They made their way into the room type chamber and began searching. Finally they came upon what looked like a smaller room attached for something “more special.”

Their suspicions were realized as two children looked up. Tiny and scared, they cowered in the nearby corner. They looked like they were barely fed and not well kept for. Riza made her way over to the boy, who resembled Edward so much. He shrunk back thinking she was going to hurt him but Riza only gave a heart warming smile. “Don’t worry I’m here to help you. I’m here to take both of you home where you belong.” The boy looked up into her brown eyes and smiled. “So what’s your name?”

“My name is Nathan and that’s my sister Rayne, are you really here to take us home?” She nodded but was more amazed at how well he spoke to her.

Breda bent down towards Rayne and she looked up at him. “So how old are you two?” Breda asked gently not want to scare them more than they were.

Rayne this time spoke up. “We are both a year old, can we please go home now?”

Breda and Hawkeye nodded gently and gathered the kids in their arms. Getting out might definitely be a problem now if anyone showed up unexpected. “So do you know when someone might show up?” Breda asked.

His answer was a quick yes from the two and they began giving off times. The kids were really smart, “must’ve got Ed’s and Roy’s smarts.” Breda thought as they made their way back to the top floors.

They worked their way back up stairs and to the upper quarters of the higher ups offices. Riza had to get a few files from the Colonel’s office before reporting to him tonight. She and Breda reached the door and quickly inserted the key in the door and opened it just slightly. She quickly went inside and got the folders then closed and locked the door. Picking Nathan back up, they made for the front doors and out into the open.

Night had fallen quickly as time passed at the Hughes’ household. Roy, Edward, Al, and Winry had reached Central HQ in not time. Al and Winry waited in the car as Edward and Roy went into the huge building. Roy wanted to get some folders Hawkeye apparently left for him and go back home. They made their way up to the buildings entrance as footsteps could be heard. Panicking, Edward started towards the side of building, but was too late when the doors opened. Roy had frozen in place at what he saw, there in Hawkeye’s and Breda’s arms were the kids. Unharmed. “Unharmed? But I thought Hawkeye said they were experimented on?” Roy shrugged the thought off and told Edward to get his ass back over there.

Edward edged along the wall and peered around only to see his kids in Riza’s and Breda’s arms. He rushed to Roy’s side in a instant. “Sir the mission was successful.” She and Breda put the children down and snapped a quick salute.

“I see, but now is not the time to do this here. Get in the car we have waiting,” Roy pointed at the next corner and they made their way back. The children seemed scared of Edward and Roy both, not being recognized instantly. This was going to take some very tough coaxing. Roy smiled, Rayne looked exactly like him and Nathan had Edward mixed with himself in the features.

Roy pulled up to the house and got out, inviting everyone in. Riza smiled and thanked him for his hospitality and so did Breda. Everyone settled in as the children stood there unsure of what to do. Roy finally coaxed them to take a seat and they sat next to Breda and Hawkeye.

Riza politely put her hand on Rayne’s shoulder and asked, “I’m guessing you are wondering who these two men are who are so excited over you huh?” Both children nodded anxiously and stared. “Well see the dark haired man right there? He’s your dad and the blonde next to him is your father, the one who gave birth to you.” Nathan frowned at that and Rayne narrowed her eyes.

Nathan was the first to speak, “you have got to be pulling my leg, how did he give birth to us? Isn’t the female supposed to and not the male?”

“Well yes, but not in this case Nathan, your father is indeed Edward. We saw it happen, we have pictures that the nurses took, need proof?” both Nathan and Rayne nodded and Roy pulled out the pictures and handed them to Riza who in turn handed them to the children. Their eyes grew wide in disbelief as their names were shown under the pictures. Truly they were speechless, but nonetheless, got up and went to their parents.

“So do we call you dad or papa?” he had addressed Roy, who smiled.

“Papa is fine and he can be dad,” Roy pointed at Edward who smiled greatly.

Roy then turned to Nathan and asked, “do you mind if we asked what happened during the time you two went missing?”

“None at all papa, it was interesting really. They did no real harm to us, but they never fed us regularly. We were considered as experiments and as experiments they tested us on how such a thing could occur. Meaning how dad gave birth to us, but we knew nothing of what they meant until tonight.” Nathan started going into heavy details, but had no real trouble telling them. “So they improved our knowledge a little early than supposed to and we learned quickly. For example,” Nathan pulled out gloves and snapped his forefinger and thumb together, which in turn made a small flame before them, then transferred the flame to his palm and made a ball of flame. Which then turned into a fire dragon, the small dragon stood in his palm, shooting tiny sparks from his mouth. They looked in awe as it disappeared and Nathan stored the gloves in his pocket.

“They taught me that in training. They figured since we had more knowledge than most kids our age they would teach us alchemy. Rayne, why don’t you show them what you can do.”

Rayne stood up and picked a metal block from her pocket. She held it in her hands as it started to shape itself then split in half and made two separate things. One was the symbol of the flag of Amestris, the other a tiny molded form of a small dog. She handed both to each Roy and Edward who smiled.

Edward looked up and said, “they improved you this early in alchemy?” and both nodded. “You two are very talented, more talented than me or your papa.” Both children bowed in respect and sat down. Edward shook his head and motioned for them to sit with him and Roy. Both obeyed and Nathan climbed in Roy’s lap while Rayne settled to Edward’s chest.

Riza and Breda got up and saluted. “Sir, we must be going. Oh and,” she made her way to Roy who in turn took what she held out. It was a tiny journal, some files, and pictures. Roy and Edward both thanked her.

“Umm, Hawkeye and Breda, I would be glad to drive you home since you were so kind to return the children to Ed and Roy.” Winry stood up, which signaled she wouldn’t take no as an answer. Both Hawkeye and Breda bowed in thanks and left with Winry. Al of course got up as well and said that they would be back shortly.
