Tyson walked in to the cafe where Kai had always hung out during their teen years. Not surprising that the phoenix had told him to come there. Said phoenix was sitting at a table by the window in the back of the cafe. A cup of coffee stood on the table in front of him, as always. The dragon blader sat down opposite of him, and the blue-haired man looked up from his book.
“Hello, Tyson,” he said in his usual low voice. “It's been a while. Almost two years.”
“Yeah, well I've been all over the world, so my social life is more or less extinct by now.”
“Hn. You got my message, obviously, since you're here.”
“Yes. Tell me what's wrong with Hilary.”
“Miguel has been abusing her ever since they got together. He controls everything she does. She isn't allowed to make any calls that he has not told her to make, or to anyone he doesn't approve of. Which is why I didn't find out until I came here. Any mistake, or any word spoken back, ends in him beating her senseless. And to make matters even worse; he beats his child as well. And he beats Hilary in front of her.”
“That rotten fucking creep!” Tyson growled! “How the hell could she choose him over me?”
Kai looked up and arched a brow.
“Chose him over you? Please explain.”
“She didn't want me. She wanted him. So I left, to make her happy.”
“Did she tell you that she didn't want you? Did she tell you to your face?”
Tyson's eyes widened and he went pale.
“No...” he breathed. “He told me. He came to my house and told me that she had decided that she didn't love me anymore and that I should leave her alone.”
“Just as I suspected,” Kai sighed. “Listen to me, Ty. Hilary never stopped loving you. She doesn't know why you left her, and that still hurts her. Miguel must have wanted her to himself, because he made sure to be there and comfort her when you left. And then she was trapped. She needs you now. Melody needs you now.”
“Melody...Is that...?”
“Melody is Hilary's daughter. The child who should have been yours. The child she wanted to be yours.”
Tyson swallowed and nodded. He looked into the eyes of his 'big brother'.
“What can I do?”
“Prepare room for them in your home. They live in my apartment now. It's not that I want to be rid of them. Not at all. Melody is an angel, and I love the little girl. But you and Hilary are meant to be together. So, she should be living in your home, and not mine.”
The dragon nodded.
“What else?”
“Just keep your phone on. I will call you every now and then to keep you updated. I need to locate Miguel and make sure he is neutralized before I can let you take care of them. He is scared of me, and that gives me an advantage.”
“Melody, what does she look like?” Kai pulled out his wallet and took a small photo out and handed it to the younger man. Tyson looked at it for a long time.
“She is beautiful!”
“Hn. And she is very frail. Scared of everything, especially men.”
“I will take care of her,” Tyson vowed. “She will be safe with me.”
“Good.”

Three weeks later...
Kai and Hilary held Melody's tiny hands and were walking through a lush park. The night air was cool, and the rain that had fallen earlier that day made the world feel fresh and clean. They had taken the little girl to see a movie, hoping it would take her mind off everything that scared her. Hilary had been meaning to take her by herself, seeing that she didn't want to disturb her friend. Kai had been struggling lately with both problems in his business and a developing depression, and he looked like he needed rest. But the blue-haired Russian would have none of it. He didn't want them to go by themselves for the risk of encountering Miguel.
Kai had really become a good man. He still had that serious and distant attitude, but there was also a softness and warmth to him now that to her still seemed a bit alien. She had realized that he only showed that side to a selected few, because to everyone but her and Melody he was still the cold and unapproachable person he had always been. It did scare her sometimes, that even all the years he had been free could not warm him up all the way inside.
But she was very glad that he and Melody got along so well. The old Kai despised children, and never missed an opportunity to make sure they knew that. But he had taken Melody to him like she was his own, and it was obvious that he loved the tiny girl. And after she had realized that the red-eyed and serious man would never hurt her, Melody had clung to him like a duckling to it's parent. Hilary had had a hard time accepting all the things he did for them at first, but then she had realized that he did it because he cared about them. Family meant the world to the orphaned man, and there was nothing he wouldn't do to make his loved ones happy. Whatever they needed, he provided, even if it was just a shoulder to cry on or someone to tell a bedtime story. Melody always made him smile. Sometimes when he was lost in thoughts, sitting by the window, she would crawl up in his lap and hug him until he snapped out of whatever thoughts he had and hold her close.
He taught her to paint, always showing proper admiration for her works and telling Hilary that she had an enormous talent. Melody always waited for him when he came home from work and more or less jumped right up in his arms, making him smile that soft smile she had only ever seen him give to the little girl. Hilary would feel a sting of pain in her heart at those moments, wishing that she could have had a dad to do that to.
Even though he rarely even mentioned Tala anymore, she knew that the redhead was always on his mind. There was a never fading hint of pain in his crimson eyes, and sometimes late at night when she went up to drink some water, she would hear a sound coming from his room that resembled crying a little bit too much. He had told her straight out about his drinking and periodic drug problems, and she knew that he fought with all he had not to fall back into that mess again. Hilary and Melody needed him, and he would not put the already traumatized little girl through that.
She snapped out of her thoughts when she heard a small gasp from Melody and Kai stopped in his tracks. A large group of men approached them from the direction they were headed, and a pale blonde wig in the middle of the group was all too familiar. Kai placed himself in front of them as Miguel came up to them. The air had suddenly become hostile.
“I found you,” Miguel almost cooed. “I always do, remember? Time to go home now.”
“Back off, Miguel,” Kai said. “Hilary will not come home with you this time.”
“Out of my way.”
“She will not come home with you, you rotten fucking bastard. Get that through your head.”
“Bastard? You're one to talk, you fucking freak. She belongs to me, so back the hell off!”
“Over my dead body.”
“If you wish.”
He signed to his followers, and they surrounded the three, trying to keep Kai focused on them. Hilary pulled Melody closer to her and looked at the man she thought she had loved. Miguel quickly came up to her.
“Come with me, you slut.”
“Never!” Hilary defied. “I will never go back to you!”
Before she or Kai (who was calculating how to get them out of there without harm or making himself a mass murderer) could react, he had pulled out a knife and made a powerful slicing move. She managed to back away, but not far enough. The knife made a deep cut in her shoulder and she cried out. Immediately, Miguel changed his grip on the knife and raised it, with a mad grin on his face. He brought it down to stab her, but suddenly someone stood in front of her. The knife buried itself up to the hilt in Kai's chest, just below his collarbone. Miguel's eyes widened in surprise. He had not even seen the phoenix move, but there he was. He pulled the blade out and a fountain of blood came from the wound.
“To try to stab the mother of your child right in front of her is pathetic, Miguel,” Kai said calmly, wiping away the dribble of blood coming from his mouth. “Are you so weak that you can't let her go, and therefore must kill her? How low can you really sink?”
Miguel's eyes caught fire, and with a growl he made to slice Kai's throat. But the bluenette just put his arm up and caught the blade in his forearm, ignoring the deep gash the opened up.
“Kai!” Hilary cried, and he turned around. Two men had grabbed her and Melody and were trying to pull them apart. He moved to help them, but two men took advantage of his temporary lack of focus in the rest of them, and caught him by the shoulders. One of them punched him right in his solar plexus – making all the air in his lungs go out. He folded slightly, but then pulled forward with such force that his two enemies lost all balance and fell to the ground. With two powerful round-kicks he brought Hilary and Melody's attackers down. Once again, he placed himself in front of them and tried to block out the dizziness caused by the loss of blood.
“The fuck is up with this guy, Hilary?” Miguel growled at her. “How hard did you fuck him to make him take all this pain for you?”
“Pain?” Kai snarled. “You don't know the first thing about pain.”
“But you're not denying that you fuck her!”
“There is nothing to deny, Miguel!” Hilary shouted. “Kai is my brother!”
“He is going to be you late 'brother' now, you little whore!”
With that, one of Miguel's men kicked Kai hard in the gut and the others followed with new punches and kicks – not giving the blue-haired man time to fight back. He was punched and kicked back and forth – blood beginning to dribble from several places on his body.
“Kai!” Hilary screamed when he fell to his knees. Miguel pulled out a gun he had kept hidden and aimed it at his chest.
“Hilary?” a voice said behind them. “Kai? What the hell is going on?”
She turned around and found herself looking at Tyson's worried face.
“Tyson!” Kai said. “Get Hilary and Melody the hell out of here!”
“What about you?” Hilary whimpered.
“Get away! I don't want you to see this.”
Tyson grabbed her and began to drag her away, but they stopped dead in their tracks and turned around when they heard Miguel's triumphant voice.
“How heroic of you, freak. You get to be the tragic hero once again. But I hope you realize that I win. There is nothing you can do now. That little bitch is going back home with me, and you will be dead in a minute – either from the loss of blood or from my bullet. Any last words?”
A vicious smile appeared on Kai's bloodstained lips.
“Phoenix, activate.”

Tala sat straight up in the couch, and thereby scared the hell out of his family – who thought he had been asleep (they were, after all, watching a horror movie). He stared out at nothing, and a slender hand went to the back of his neck where his chip was located. He looked like he was listening to something.
“The hell?” he said. “Wolf, repeat!” The other three Russian men looked at him, a bit bemused. He looked over at them, eyes wide, scared and angry. “Kai just activated his chip,” he said. “That means he is in some kind of trouble. Where is he?”
“We have still promised not to tell you,” Spencer said. “And I aint gonna believe you until you can give some kind of confirmation on it.”
“You are a fucking asshole, Spencer!” Tala growled. “But fine! Wolf, repeat message. Put on audio!”
+Phoenix system has been activated. Battle mode in effect+ came a metallic female voice from Tala's mouth.
“I hate when you do that,” Ian shuddered. “It freaks me out, seriously.”
“Well,” Tala said in his normal voice. “Thank Spencer for it.”
The Russians looked at each other. Kai had been very clear about them telling Tala about his whereabouts. He was not to be informed unless Kai specifically told them to do it. It was unsettling news though, that he had activated the chip and put it in battle mode. They looked at the redhead, who was watching them closely.
“We still won't tell you, Tal,” Bryan said. “Kai told us not to. And besides, in his battle mode he can take down any enemy coming at him. I think he can handle it.”
That statement caused a very long and very very nasty tidal wave of curses to flush over them. No doubt that Tala was furious. He marched off to their training room, and soon the explosion-like sounds that indicated he was destroying yet another sand bag, was heard all over the apartment.

“Activate battle mode.”
“Say fucking what?” Miguel blurted out. “The hell do you think you're doing, freak?” Kai stood up and looked at him. The red eyes were glowing, like there was a fire behind them. There was no hint of emotions other than malice in them, and a vicious smile played at the thin lips. “Get him!”
The men threw themselves at the phoenix with whatever weapons they had, and for a moment, Kai wasn't even visible. But then something happened. It looked like a shock-wave hit them, because the men were thrown back in all directions. Every new attack was met and counter attacked. Kai still didn't show the slightest sign of emotions, he just moved. Bones were broken, joints dislocated. It was happening so fast, they had a hard time actually see the movements. Finally, there was only Miguel left. Kai turned his burning gaze to him, and with a few long strides he stood right in front of the pale blonde man. Miguel held his gun up, still aiming at the bluenette. Kai looked at it, reached out a hand and gripped his wrist. The power of the tightening grip made him yelp and he dropped the gun. Kai reached out his other hand and grabbed Miguel by the neck, lifting him up in the air with one arm.
“The hell are you doing, you freak?” Miguel growled. “You're not even human! You belong in hell!”
“I am human, Miguel,” Kai said in that eerie voice. “Merely a bit enhanced. And I do belong in hell. I do deserve to die for all my crimes. But so do you. You tried to kill the mother of your child. You beat them. That earns you eternity in pain. You don't deserve to live.” He looked over at Melody, and turned so Miguel could look at her too. “I could so easily kill you, Miguel. Snapping your neck would not be any harder than to break a dry twig. But I will not do that. I will not rid that innocent child of her father, no matter what monster he is. I will however warn you, that if you ever make any attempts to contact them – or hurt them in any way – either yourself or with help; I will find you, and I will finish this. I will always be watching my family. Do you understand me?” He tightened his grip a bit. Miguel yelped and nodded. “Now, crawl away you mangy dog. Don't come near them ever again.”
He let go of Miguel and the man collapsed on the ground. Then he turned around to walk away. A metallic clicking noise was heard, and Hilary screamed.
“Kai! Behind you!”
Without hesitation, Kai turned around and round kicked Miguel in the side of his head – sending the man flying a good ten feet and crashing down on the ground. He didn't move. Kai looked around at the moaning, crying and unconscious men scattered on the ground around him.
“Oh, God,” he whispered. “I did it again.” He straightened up. “Phoenix, deactivate battle mode. Set system on standby.” Immediately the pain and the dizziness blocked out by the battle mode, came back and hit him. He swayed back and forth for a moment, before his legs gave in and he fell to the ground.
