Konekas Excellent Vacation, Part 9
ROSAT: Epilogue
I swear a heavenly chorus was singing aaaaahhhhh, when I opened the door. We were backlit by that unearthly glow and I could only imagine what we must have looked like as we exited the room of spirit and time.
A collective gasp greeted us as I moved out of the way to let Vejita through. They were all waiting, including a couple guys I had never seen before, one with three eyes! But the only person I was interested in at the moment was Trunks. He was standing off to the side, hands jammed in his pockets.
I laid my stuff down gently and, while Vejita and Goku had a heated conversation over who was the best, I approached Trunks with what I hoped was shame and humility.
Im sorry, Trunks, I said quietly, looking at the floor. When I looked up, he was staring open-mouthed at me.
Trunks?
Oh! Ummm...its okay, Koneka. Im going in with Piccolo. Its only been a day.
I still couldnt get over how bizarre this was! I had had enough time to finish a painting, learn martial arts, energy control and flying, and only a day had passed here. I glanced over at Vejita, who was stalking away from the group.
How did you... youre so... Trunks was floundering for the right words.
I looked down at myself. Knowing that Vejita wasnt likely to give his son the time of day, I said with a shrug, I worked out. Had nothing else to do.
I couldnt help myself, though. I opened my palm. Vejita did teach me... but my words were drowned out by the sound of an approaching aircraft. Everyone ran to see who had arrived, except me and Vejita, who stopped his forward movement as the group moved past him.
He stood stiff and silent off to the right, then slowly turned and walked back to where I was. Our eyes locked. The left side of his mouth crooked up, and he slipped his fist under my chin.
Dont throw any energy balls, he said gruffly, tipping my chin up. He kissed me, slowly, deeply, and our gazes lingered on each other for the briefest moment. Then, he left.
Alone, I stood there listening to the excited voice of Gohan as he announced, Its Bulma!
The moment I had been dreading had come.
*********
She was tall, thin and beautiful. Her clothes were stylish, the blue hair straight and bobbed. Baby Trunks was balanced on her hip and Gohan was making faces at him. Because of the rushing and pounding of the blood in my ears, I couldnt hear what was going on, but she was handing out uniforms. Goku, who apparently had no shame, had stripped to his shorts and was pulling on a suit that looked just like Vejitas. Mmmm... he sure looked good in spandex! But not nearly as handsome as Vejita, who appeared dressed in his new duds and looked downright spiffy!
Vejita was scowling as usual and apparently arguing with her. I heard something about hair and then Vejita was snarling at Goku again. This group seemed very tense with most of their anger directed at Vejita. And suddenly, with a smirk and a remark tossed over his shoulder, he was gone in an explosion of power. The only thing left was his fading energy trail.
Just like that. Gone.
I sat on my backpack and watched as Goku and Gohan first consumed mass quantities of food and then headed for the room of spirit and time. As he approached me, Goku stopped and regarded me soberly. I had to look way up from my perch on my backpack. He cocked his head as our eyes met. Then he smiled broadly, ruffled my hair and he was gone.
He knew. And he understood. It helped a little, but watching Trunks, Bulma and baby Trunks interact, I had to face facts. I was in love with Vejita, and that was a very big problem.
**********
Im sorry again, Trunks, I said, when I finally cornered him alone. I glanced beyond him where Bulma was looking at us curiously. It might be good if your mother... I hesitated.
No reason for her to know. She would understand completely why I didnt go in with father. Unfortunately.
There was no point in going into details. He helped me adjust my backpack on my back. I looked at my covered painting, thinking of my subject hidden under the cloth. My stomach fluttered.
I grabbed Trunks hand and squeezed. I want you to have it, Trunks. Maybe your mother would like it one day.
He smiled. Thank you, Koneka. Ill give you a lift home, he said as he started to reach for me. I stepped back, shook my head, winked at him, and rose into the air. I laughed at the look on his face, waved and headed home.
... dont go away! It continues with the Cell Games ...
