A few weeks later…
“Help!”
“The beast is attacking!”
“Someone save us!”
“Silver doesn’t work on it!”
People ran around screaming in terror while a cub werewolf ran around and destroyed people’s homes and injured a handful of them. However, one person did not run from it and that hooded stranger pulled out a long silver blade and ran towards the beast instead. He let out a battle cry as he leaped onto the beast and stabbed it in the back with his sword. The cub roared and began running around trying to get the man off. It crashed into buildings and rolled on the ground as it did so, but the man held strong. After a few minutes, the hooded hero pulled his blade downward, causing it to slice the wolf open down its side. The cub whimpered then fell over, dying instantly. The man landed gracefully on his feet then swept his blade to the side, causing the blood on it to fling off then sheathed it.
The people of the destroyed village slowly gathered around the creature as it transformed back to its human form. Someone gasped when they recognized the boy with wild hair. “It’s the boy that’s wanted for a thousand pieces of gold!”
Another looked at the wanted poster in their hands. “It is! It’s him! He’s wanted dead or alive!”
The hooded stranger spoke to no one in particular, but assumed his demands would be met. “In that case, I’ll take my reward now.”
After a few moments, someone came with the gold in hand and gave it to the stranger. “Thank you.” The man whispered to him.
The hooded hero said nothing in response then picked up the boy and slung him over his shoulder and began to walk off with him. “Wait!” Another man spoke from the crowd. “Where do you think you’re going with it?! It needs to be brought to the one who ordered for his arrest!”
The stranger stopped and turned slightly towards the man so he could hear him. “That’s where I’m going.” With that said, he continued on towards his destination without anyone stopping him.
When he reached a desolate part of the woods, he dropped his burden on the ground and pushed the hood back and off his head. He also dropped a sack next to the cub and eyed him. “Come on, get dressed. No one’s around.” He stepped back a few steps.
Kakarot coughed up some blood then struggled to stand. “Don’t you think that was a little harsh? You could’ve killed me!”
Vegeta frowned and crossed his arms. “Yeah well that’s what you get for making me do everything. Don’t you think you could’ve struggled more? You made it too easy! People are going to think we are scamming them with a performance like that!”
Kakarot frowned then stood when his wound healed all the way. “I thought I did fine! I practically destroyed half of that village after all AND I injured some people! What more do you want?!” He went through the sack next to him and pulled out some clean clothes and began dressing.
Vegeta sneered as he watched the other. “If you’re going to act like silver doesn’t affect you, then I suggest putting up more of a fight.”
Kakarot growled as he put on his shoes. “People have to know that I’m the one that’s wanted all across the continent. Wouldn’t it be a little confusing if I pretended silver hurt only for them to question if it doesn’t? They’ll think we’re frauds.” He stood once his shoes were on.
Vegeta huffed then began walking towards the next village. “Let’s relax in the next village. I’m getting tired of beating your ass every time we arrive in one.”
Kakarot let out a huff of his own. “Well, if that’s the way you feel about it, then you can get caught next time.”
“Hn.” Vegeta responded as they continued towards their destination.
However, neither was aware of someone watching them from behind. The figure narrowed its eyes at its target then moved from its hiding spot to follow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A day had passed and the two wolves still hadn’t made it to their destination. “Ahhhhhh! How far is it?! Shouldn’t we be there by now?!” Vegeta screamed out in frustration.
Kakarot looked at the map upside down, then right side up, only to turn it upside down again. “Uummm…you would think so.” He answered uncertainly with his tongue poking out in thought.
“Give me that!” Vegeta snatched the map from the cub. He looked at it the right way and studied it. “Okay, we left Ruse down here, then we headed north towards Bucharest in Romania. So, we should be somewhere…” He trailed off as he tried to find where they were.
Kakarot looked around them tiredly. “In the wilderness?” He suggested.
Vegeta stared at the map a moment longer before giving up. “Damn it! That’s the last time I let you look at the map!” He pointed at Kakarot accusingly.
Kakarot gasped. “Excuse me! If someone bothered teaching me how to read it, then MAYBE we wouldn’t be lost!”
Vegeta growled. “Are you saying it’s my fault?! Huh?! Come on! You know that’s what you want to say so just say it!”
Kakarot walked up to Vegeta and stood an inch away from him. “It’s…your…fault.” He said slowly.
The half breed tensed everything in his body in anger then shoved the cub away and pounced on him. “You stupid mutt!”
They continued rolling around on the ground, trying to get the better of the other. “Worthless half breed!”
A hit to the face and a couple punches to the gut. “You can’t kill, can’t READ! What good are you?!”
Another hit to the face and an attempt to strangle. “You’re so infuriating to be with! No wonder your father wants you dead!”
They suddenly found a hill and rolled down it, however, neither noticed as the insults continued. “Obviously your useless wolves can’t even find you! Either that or they don’t care!”
“Stuck up jerk!”
“Spoiled brat!”
“Asshole!”
“Pussy!”
Their rolling and insults came to a stop when they hit a stone wall. Both looked up at the tall structure then stood and brushed the dead leaves from their clothing and wiped the blood from their faces. They looked around the wall and noticed an old rusty gate that let them go around it. Neither said a word when they came upon a massive, decrepit, stone structure and gaped in awe. After a few minutes, Kakarot spoke. “What is it?”
Vegeta looked at the cub with a twitch of his eye. “It’s a castle! Idiot.” Kakarot gave Vegeta a look, but it went unnoticed as the half breed made his way inside. “Well, come on. Maybe there’s a place to sleep for the night.” He waved the cub over.
“Okay.” Kakarot answered uneasily then followed the other.
They slowly made their way inside and looked around the building, once again, in awe. It was dark, but there were a few holes in the roof that let some sunlight through. Two massive staircases lead the way upstairs. One of them was falling apart and the other looked to be intact. Red carpet adorned them and a worn out railing stood to the side of them. There were six rooms that lead to wherever from the room they were in. “Wow. Who do you think lived here?” Kakarot asked in wonder.
Vegeta eyed the chandelier from above as it looked like it could fall any second. “I don’t know, but they must’ve been important.” He looked to the doorways next then turned to Kakarot. “Hey, let’s explore. You take that side and I’ll take this side.” He gestured to the other side of the castle then to his side.
“Okay!” Kakarot responded excitedly before running off.
“Just be careful! This place is falling apart!” Vegeta yelled after him.
“Okaaaaay!” Kakarot yelled back.
Vegeta shook his head then picked a door and went through it. Apparently he entered the dining hall of the place. It looked like it took up half of the castle, but again, the roof appeared to be caving in from age and the lack of caretaking. The table was no longer intact. It looked to be rotted and the chairs as well. Few dishes remained, some were in one piece and the rest in pieces. From the looks of it, this room was no longer in use. He moved to the next room that led from this one. It was the kitchen. It looked to be useable. The ceiling was intact, but anything wooden wasn’t. The stove and oven were concrete so no worries there, but spiders took residence in them. He moved onto a couple other rooms that looked to store food, only to gag when a couple of dead rats and other such critters occupied them.
“Hey, Vegeta! I found the bedroom!” Vegeta heard Kakarot call from somewhere. He scrunched his nose at the sight of the corpses, making note never to go in there again and left.
The half breed went back to the entrance hall, where they started, and called out to the other. “Where are you?!”
Kakarot ran out of a room on the second floor and stopped to lean against the surprisingly sturdy banister. “Up here! It’s really something! It’s got a fireplace and a comfy bed! Come see!”
Vegeta quirked an eyebrow at the thought of a fireplace being in a bedroom, but made his way up nonetheless. He followed Kakarot into the room and noticed that dark reds adorned the bed, walls, and floor. A four poster bed surrounded by torn curtains sat against the wall, making the large room look even bigger. The ceiling was also intact here and on the wall in front of him, sure enough, was a fireplace. Next to it was a window and in the wall across from the bed was a bathing room, but had no water in it. “Wow. You found a nice room, Kakarot. Now go find your room.”
Kakarot looked at him in surprise. “But I found it first!”
“Yeah and I’m the first one to claim it. So go find your own.” Vegeta said nonchalantly.
Kakarot glared at him then began to leave. “Figures.”
“Oh and there’s a kitchen downstairs.” Vegeta pointed out as he made himself comfortable on the creaky bed.
“Hn.” Kakarot turned towards the door and left. However, after searching the entire building, Kakarot couldn’t find a decent room that wasn’t falling apart. Vegeta’s room was the only one worth staying in. He went back to tell him just that, only to find the older prince sleeping. Kakarot raised a brow at this. He didn’t think he was so tired. Perhaps the exhaustion caught up with him from sleeping outside for a month. As he stared at him, he couldn’t help but notice how calm and relaxed Vegeta looked. It was almost…odd to see him like that. Now that he thought about it, he’s never seen the prince sleeping before. When he was awake, he always seemed so grumpy and bothered. Was it because he wasn’t getting enough sleep? He stared at the other’s face as if in a trance for a little while longer before looking out the window and noticed that the sun was setting. His stomach growled at the same time, reminding him that he hadn’t eaten all day. The cub groaned and looked at the sleeping form on the worn bed. He hoped he woke soon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vegeta walked down a dusty street in a village that he didn’t recognize, but it looked familiar to him anyway. Where was he? How did he get there? He looked around at all the busy people walking to and fro wherever they were heading. They seemed to completely ignore him as if he wasn’t there. However, this didn’t surprise him. What did surprise him was a sudden boom as a wolf cub burst through a few houses. People ran and screamed as it ate everyone in its path. Vegeta put on his game face as he reached for his sword, however, he froze in alarm when he realized he didn’t have it. He took a few steps back when the wolf came closer, however, he stood his ground. He ran towards it with a battle cry and punched it in the nozzle. Vegeta took a step back in shock when he noticed it did no harm whatsoever to it. Although, it did bring attention to himself. The wolf pounced on him, causing him to hit the ground and land on his back. The wolf’s paw held him down and kept him from going anywhere. It snarled in his face and growled at him in his hunger. Wait, how did he know it was hungry? The next moment, he felt his own hunger as his eyes came into focus. He realized in silent surprise that he was looking down at Kakarot in the wolf’s place. However he couldn’t control himself when he opened his jaws wide, determined to eat the boy alive. The hunger…it was too much…he couldn’t control it. Just when he was about to bite the boy’s head off…he woke up.
Vegeta shouted as he sat up in bed in a cold sweat. He panted while he regained his senses and tried to recall where he was. He rubbed a gloved hand over his drenched face in an attempt to wipe the dream from his mind. He suddenly jumped when Kakarot spoke from the floor in front of the lit fire place. “Are you alright, Vegeta?” The boy looked at him with worry.
The half breed eyed the boy, the hunger bubbling to the surface, determined to get what it was craving. He jumped out of bed in surprise when his stomach growled loudly along with a growl of his own. “Uh…n-no…I’m not alright.” He answered helplessly. He looked around nervously in an attempt to do something about his craving.
Kakarot stood and advanced towards him. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
Vegeta took a step back when the boy got too close. Sure, he could fulfill his hunger. No. Stop that. He shook his head in an attempt to focus. “No, I just uh…I need to eat.” He avoided that concerned gaze.
“Well, you can go hunting. It’s past dinner time anyway.” Kakarot waited for the double meaning to hit.
Vegeta sighed. “Right, well. I’ll be back in a couple hours or so.” He went to leave.
“Okay.” Kakarot murmured uneasily as he watched the other leave.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vegeta pounced on a squirrel without hesitation and immediately torn into it with his teeth as it screamed in his hands. After a couple bites, it stopped squirming and squealing then died. The half breed ate it desperately as if it were the only thing keeping him alive. He relished in the blood, meat, fur, and fat that came with the small critter as the ache in his teeth and the hunger went away little by little. When there was nothing but bone, he tossed it aside then went to catch another. Three squirrels and two rabbits later, he decided that he could focus enough to catch them a real meal. Shit. When was the full moon? Soon, he knew that much. He looked up then and noticed that the moon was almost full. He gritted his blood stained teeth and shook slightly as he felt the moon’s rays bear down on him. Damn you.
He growled loudly then stopped when he heard leaves rustle. There was no wind. His eyes stared into the darkness as he took in his surroundings and gently sniffed the air. There was…something there…something…was going to happen. He didn’t know what but he knew he didn’t like it. He looked to his right when he heard another rustling. He saw a fox shuffling through the dead leaves looking for food. He turned his full attention towards it. Obviously it had no idea he was there, it was only a few feet away from him. He patiently waited for it to get right in front of him before pouncing. The fox whimpered and barked as it tried to get away, but he quickly silenced it by breaking its neck. He stood from the ground and looked around a little more in suspicion before going back in the castle.
A shadow watched the half breed look around himself then went back inside. As soon as he turned his back on it, the dark figure darted from its spot and disappeared.
When Vegeta returned, he tossed the dead fox in front of Kakarot. “You know what to do, right?”
Kakarot gazed at the poor animal solemnly before nodding. “Yes.” He looked up then and noticed blood covered Vegeta’s face from the fire light.
“Good. I’m going to wash up.” Vegeta replied in a blank tone then went to do what he said.
“It’s getting worse, isn’t it? The full moon is close, I can feel it. I think it’ll be tomorrow night.” Kakarot stood from his spot on the floor.
Vegeta paused for a brief moment then continued walking without saying a word. Kakarot sighed then looked down at the dead fox in slight disgust. However, he ignored the dead part and went about gutting and deboning the creature. Once done, Vegeta returned with a clean face and joined Kakarot on the floor. Kakarot didn’t want to break the silence, but he had to. “Is…this all there is? ‘Cause, you know…this alone could feed me. What about you?”
Vegeta went about helping Kakarot cooking the meat. “I ate already.”
Kakarot stared at the other for a minute. “Oh…” After another moment of silence, Kakarot broke it again. “Is it getting worse?” He asked without looking at him.
Vegeta didn’t answer for a minute before responding quietly. “Yes.”
Kakarot watched the meat cook for a minute then spoke his thoughts. “We can’t have you roaming around again. You might hurt someone.” He stated solemnly, but when Vegeta didn’t respond, he continued. “Maybe…there’s a place here where we can keep you…so you won’t-“
“No! I won’t be locked up again! I can’t take it!” Vegeta suddenly stood and threw one of the carving blades into some rotting furniture.
Kakarot flinched at the reaction. “But…it could be a place where a roof caved in or something, so that way, the moon will still be available to you and the transformation won’t be as painful.”
“So I can escape?!” Vegeta continued his tantrum.
“N-No. So it’ll be easier. W-We…I mean, I can still chain you up…so that way…you won’t…escape.” Kakarot looked down in shame. He didn’t want to imprison the other like his father did, but he felt like he had no choice. Back there…he thought he could help him, but he was wrong. He can only contain him. Vegeta paused in his tantrum and looked away from the cub. “I’m sorry, Vegeta, but this is the only way I can help you until I find another solution. Let’s just…find a way to last the next few nights, okay?” He explained gently.
Vegeta sighed helplessly. “Fine. I’m going to sleep.” He finished tiredly then went to collapse on the dusty bed.
Kakarot wanted to point out that he slept half the day, but he was probably still tired. However, he had to ask a question before he fell asleep…a question that’s been bugging him since they started this journey to nowhere. “Hey, Vegeta?”
“Hmm.” The half breed answered lazily, teetering on the edge of sleep.
It took a moment for Kakarot to summon the courage to ask his question. “When we first saw our wanted poster…why…why didn’t you…go home? Because you could’ve…if you wanted to. I mean, I think all your father wants is to…have you home.” He finished quietly and in uncertainty. He didn’t want to be alone.
When he didn’t get a response after a while, Kakarot thought Vegeta fell asleep. However, he didn’t have to wait much longer for an answer to come. “My father only wants me home so I don’t harm anyone. He thinks I’m a danger to everything around me…like you. Besides, why go back to a place where you’re treated like a prisoner?” He asked weakly before sleep claimed him.
Kakarot stopped breathing at that notion. And here he was talking about locking him up. He stared at the other prince for a while in thought. After all they’ve been through, he was still going to treat him like a prisoner. Hell, he’s been treating him like one half the time they’ve been together…for the sake of money. But this? This was a sensitive subject and could damage someone emotionally and mentally. When he thought about it more, he smiled softly. He could trust him. The young cub believed that he could trust the prince and maybe even be considered as his friend. He’ll protect him and help him as best as he can. No more. He won’t be treated like a prisoner anymore. No…he’ll be there for him. He’ll be with him when he transforms and make sure he does no harm to anyone. However, being locked up like that all his life and then suddenly being free probably won’t do either of them any good, but it was something they were going to have to get used to.
The next day, Vegeta awoke to a dull light shining in his face. His eyes blinked open sleepily and he noticed that it was cloudy out. He turned over on his back and stretched then got out of bed. He looked around for Kakarot, but didn’t see him anywhere. “Kakarot?” He waited a few minutes but didn’t get an answer. He merely shrugged then slowly made his way outside to find something to eat. However, when he reached outside, he stood in surprise when he noticed the ground was white. Snowflakes slowly drifted to the ground, covering the dead environment with its fluffy whiteness. He held out a gloved hand and watched in fascination as the snowflakes floated onto the material and melted instantly. He looked around to see everything was covered a few inches thick in the stuff. It must’ve started falling as soon as he got his dinner, then again, he didn’t know what time it was either. He tried looking up at the cloudy sky to see the sun, but could only squint his eyes against the brightness and gave up.
He took a few steps in the snow and almost flinched when it was the only sound in the quiet forest. He stopped when he got that same feeling he had last night. Something was…there…something was going to happen. He always got this feeling when he was about to be attacked by a-. His body suddenly tensed when he sensed something behind him. He slowly turned to see what it was then tried to cry out, but all that came out was a choking sound.
A two legged werewolf was growling right in his face. Vegeta stumbled back a few steps in surprise then ran back inside the crumbling structure. The wolf was just about to strike right when Vegeta took off and managed to only smash the doors in. The force of the blow caused Vegeta to hit the ground and slide across the floor until he collided with one of the staircases. The large double doors flew inside and tried to hit Vegeta, who managed to dodge them the last second. He immediately began digging for his sword and knife, but when he realized he didn’t have them on him, he looked up at the second floor where his room was; knowing they were there. With that in mind, he looked back to see where the wolf was and noticed that it was barreling right at him. He managed to dodge its deadly claws by leaping up the stairs and running towards his room. However, as soon as he got there, he was grabbed from behind and thrown across the entrance hall and hit the wall with a yelp. The half breed landed on the ground with a grunt then quickly stood and looked around for anything useful to fight the wolf with. Great. No silver…nothing sharp…the wood was rotting…ah, sharp stones were littered everywhere. He went to pick one up but was snatched before he could get the chance. A large claw pinned him to the solid wall, but didn’t pin his arms to his sides. The half breed struggled and tried pushing the claw off with all his strength, but to no avail. He suddenly stopped his struggles and leaned back against the wall when the wolf’s head leaned towards him until it was an inch away and seemed to smirk at him with a wolfy grin.
Kakarot trotted back to their decrepit castle through the fresh snow in his wolf form. He’s never been out in it before. Sure he’s seen snow fall and watched other cubs play in it, but for some reason, his father never let him out, saying that it was too dangerous. But how could it be when the other cubs were playing in it? Now that he thought about it, he was like a prisoner himself. His tongue hung out as he panted from his little run earlier. It was good to go out and run around in this form. He doesn’t get to transform too often so it’s nice to do it every once in a while. The big snowflakes danced around in the air and drifted onto his tongue. He licked around his mouth every now and then, trying to get the little bit of precipitation. He suddenly froze when he sensed something he’s never felt before. However, he knew he didn’t like it. It felt like…something threatening was there…like he was in danger or-. He suddenly broke out into a sprint and headed straight for the castle. On his way, he picked up a familiar scent and growled through his teeth. No, how did they find them? He ran faster when the scent of blood was picked up. No! Oh no, please! Vegeta!
Kakarot slid to a halt when he came into view of a two legged wolf holding the half breed by the ribcage. He whined when he saw blood soaked into Vegeta’s shirt and drip onto the white snow, painting it red. He looked to the wolf holding his companion and realized its claw was digging into his chest, however, Vegeta was still alive. The half breed was still in the wolf’s grasp, only panting through the pain that he was surely experiencing and gripping the wolf’s arm in a death grip, but made no other move to free himself. Kakarot made a series of whimpers at that notion, sincerely worried about the half breed. He looked at the wolf more closely and noticed that it looked oddly familiar. At first, he thought it was his father again then began to advance towards him. However, the wolf was having none of that and dug his claw more deeply into Vegeta’s ribcage. Vegeta screamed as the pain worsened while Kakarot let out a loud whimper and flinched back a few steps as if he were the one that had a claw through him. The wolf sneered at his reaction and dug his claw further into the still form against him. Vegeta let out another shout of agony and gasped as he tried to get air into damaged lungs. Blood trickled from his mouth as the blood from the wound tried to find another way out. Kakarot paced with worry, but didn’t get any closer to his injured friend and his whimpers continued.
With a turn of his head, Kakarot looked back to the wolf and noticed he transformed into his human form. He stopped his pacing when he realized it was his brother. Raditz gave his younger brother a malicious grin, the half breed still in his grasp. “Hello brother. It’s been a while.”
After a few minutes of realization dawning on the half breed and the cub, Vegeta rasped, “S-So…you’re…Raditz.”
Raditz turned his head towards the half breed prince. “Yes. I guess we haven’t really met, have we?” He leaned his head closer to Vegeta’s and licked the little stream of blood from Vegeta’s mouth. Vegeta turned his head away after he did so as Raditz closed his eyes at the taste. “Ah yes. I remember that flavor so vividly.”
“Wh-What…are you…talking about?” Vegeta turned his head to look the other in the eyes when he opened them.
“What, don’t you know?” Raditz leaned towards him again. Vegeta pulled back until his head rested against the other’s shoulder. “I was the one that made you into what you are.”
Vegeta couldn’t get his breath for a moment as he stared into the wolf’s eyes in horror then shook his head in denial. “No…Bardock…was the one…that…” He trailed off when he saw the certainty in the other’s eyes. “No. How could it be you! He was stronger-AH!” His bewilderment was interrupted with a turn of Raditz’ hand.
“Aw, poor half-blood prince. Don’t you know anything? After all, you’ve spent your entire life hunting us. The next generation of werewolf is stronger than the last. I thought you knew that.” Raditz ended with a smirk.
After the shock passed, Vegeta began to struggle. “You…bastard. I’ll…kill you-Ahhhhhh FUCK!” He suddenly clawed and tried arching away from the hand that took a firm hold of one of his lungs.
Raditz’ attention was suddenly brought to a whimpering cub, who stared intently at the half breed. “Brother, what do you think you’re doing with this half breed?! He is our enemy! Not your friend! He’ll kill you the moment your back is turned on him!” Kakarot shook his head and whined slightly. Raditz calmed somewhat, “At least, that’s what I would’ve thought…if I hadn’t been following you.” Both Kakarot and Vegeta froze at that and Raditz laughed mockingly. “All this time and you never noticed me! However, I just found you about a week ago. It wasn’t too hard really. I just went by the rumors. ‘Oh, did you hear that the half breed was captured in Germany?’ ‘Oh, but what about Italy? He was captured there too!’ ‘You don’t say! But I also heard that the cub was caught as well. However, he somehow escaped, like the half breed.’ ‘Really? I heard he died in Romania. Someone hunted him and killed him right in the village then collected his reward and took the cub with him!’ ‘Wow, that is strange.’” Raditz mimicked the people he’s heard gossiping in a slightly deranged tone. He then looked to the barely breathing half breed to his little brother. “Yes…quite strange. Strange that you two have saved and helped each other and actually developed a friendship.” He laughed at that then sent his brother a piercing stare. “Honestly brother, if I were to be betrayed by anyone…I never thought it’d be you.”
Kakarot’s ears flattened against his head as he growled and bared his teeth then made a series of barks. Raditz sneered at his brother’s reaction. “How…dare you bare your teeth at me! I’m your brother!” Another series of barks then Raditz looked at the snow covered ground solemnly for a moment then looked back up at Kakarot. “Although, it’s understandable. I was hoping you wouldn’t find out…not until you were older at least.” He watched in curiosity as his brother turned back into his human form.
“Why even keep the truth from me in the first place?” Kakarot glowered at his brother and still made no move to get closer. “I trusted you, Raditz…you were the only one I could. Father didn’t care about me like you did-“
“I still care about you! More so than that bastard ever will!” Raditz declared, his emotions getting the better of him. “Now, come home…where you belong.”
“No! I won’t come home to a family I don’t know! Everything I know is a lie! I thought I knew you Raditz, my own brother. Now father…I can see him keeping a few secrets, but you? You were my teacher, my friend, my family…if anyone should feel betrayed, it’s me.” Kakarot ended forcefully, but sadly.
Raditz shook in his guilt as his father’s words repeated in his head. ‘It’s one thing if I lie to him. He’d have you to go to, but for you to keep it all from him? If I’m responsible, so are you.’ Finally, he released the half breed and threw him several yards behind him, causing him to breaks a few trees on the way as he landed on the ground with a shout. Kakarot took note where he landed and turned his attention back to his brother. “I…I just wanted to protect you! You’re my little brother!” He panted as the turmoil inside him threatened to spill out, but managed to control himself. “Besides, what could I say to you? That we started the war between humans and werewolves? That our only food source is humans?” He looked to him desperately. “It would’ve broken your kind little heart. I just…I couldn’t…I didn’t want to see the look on your face when you would’ve eventually found out the inevitable. I just…I only prayed that it wasn’t this soon. I…I hope that you…can forgive me.” He held back tears as his emotions threatened to spill over.
Kakarot had the urge to go over and comfort his brother…to tell him that he did forgive him and everything was going to be alright…but he didn’t. “I don’t know if I will ever forgive you. You kept everything from me, you betrayed my trust…all I see when I look at you…is a murderer.”
Tears fell at Kakarot’s hurtful words. “Nooooo! Don’t say that! Don’t say that Kakarot!”
Kakarot stood his ground. “It’s true. I mean it.”
“No!” Raditz shook his head in denial. “No you don’t! You don’t mean that!”
Kakarot took a deep breath then let it out. “There’s just one thing I need to know…what started this war? What made father…break?”
Raditz sniffed, the painful stings of the cold truth Kakarot spoke still made his heart ache. “M-Mother.”
“Mother?” Kakarot perked up at the mention of her. “What about her?”
Raditz wiped away the tears to keep some of his dignity. “As you know…she was one of the strongest of us all. She was beautiful and strong at heart as well. Father…loved her…more than anything in the world. Then…she died giving birth to you. She was…taken…from him, was how he put it. He wasn’t mad at you though. If anything, he saw her in you. You’re abilities are what make you strong and apparently, strong at heart as well.”
“So, losing mama made papa sad and that’s what made him start the war?” Kakarot wondered.
Raditz nodded. “Something like that. Except it was more…powerful. The pain he felt was worse than he could handle, so he unleashed it. He said, “If I’m to lose my queen, then so shall the humans.” And…that’s what he did.”
Kakarot gasped then looked in the general direction of where Vegeta was. “So, that’s how Vegeta lost his mother.” He looked to Raditz then. “No wonder you didn’t speak of her much. Now tell me, what made you want to turn Vegeta? He was only a child at the time.” He said more to himself solemnly.
Raditz appeared to have recuperated somewhat then narrowed his eyes at his brother. “It was father’s idea. He wanted to kill king Vegeta and his son on the night of a full moon and he asked me to come along with him. I said yes of course and then…” Radditz trailed off as he became more engrossed in his tale. “And then…we attacked. They were both in the king’s chambers.” He smirked then and went on sarcastically. “Little Vegeta was playing with daddy’s swords.” The smirk fell just as quickly. “The deal was…I was going to kill Vegeta and father was going to kill the king, but it all went wrong. I attacked Vegeta and was about to finish the job, but…his father got in the way.” He growled at the memory. “That man proved to be too strong for us. He was determined to save himself and his son, however, he didn’t save him in time. I had already bitten him when we fled. Just to think,” He paused to look behind him where he threw the half breed, “one more bite and he would’ve been dead. One more swipe of my claw, one more or a little more of anything…and the little brat would’ve died, but no. He survived…barely.” He turned back to his brother then. “I’ve come to finish what I started and to bring you home.” With that, Raditz turned and began heading towards Vegeta.
However, Kakarot got in his way. “Raditz no! Please, don’t kill Vegeta. He’s already been through so much. If you still care about me at all, you’d let me go. You’ve never seen me-“
Raditz grabbed a hold of him then. “I’m not leaving you! And I’m not leaving that half breed alive! He deserves to die for what he’s done to our kind!”
“But Raditz, you brought this upon him. If it weren’t for you, there would be more of us.” Kakarot reasoned with him, but when he didn’t get a response, he decided to bring up a touchy subject. “Don’t you realize it yet, Raditz? No matter what you do, father’s never going to appreciate you. He’s never going to give you the attention that you crave.” He gasped when he was jerked forward by his arm.
Raditz looked like he was about to yell at him, but thought against it. “You know, I used to be so jealous of you, little brother. I envied you more than anyone. Of course, I rarely felt the emotion, but let’s go with that. You were…father’s little creation. He’s so proud of you, of what you are and what you’ll become. And at that notion, I couldn’t help but feel the same, but at the same time, I hated you. I hated you for being something that I should be. I hated you because father favored you more! I’ve done everything for him and for you! I did what I was told and even kept the dirty secrets! And what do I get in return?! Nothing!” He suddenly began to choke Kakarot with one hand. “I’m tired of being everyone’s lap dog and I’m tired of doing all the dirty work! Just…don’t make this any harder than it has to be Kakarot. Either you come with me or father will come for you.” He ended threateningly as Kakarot tried to get his brother to release him.
He made choking sounds as he did so, but the grip tightened. “R-Ra-ditz.” He gasped out.
Raditz stared into his little brother’s eyes and saw nothing but fear and betrayal. As if suddenly realizing what he was doing, he looked at his brother in confusion before suddenly letting him go. He looked at his hands in fear then to his little brother. “K-Kakarot…I-“ He continued to stare at him, at a loss for words. His gaze flickered to where the half breed landed then sneered and transformed. However, instead of heading to where Vegeta lay, he took off in the opposite direction, barreling through trees as he did so.
Kakarot held his throat and rubbed it gingerly in an attempt to get the feeling of his brother’s hand crushing it to disappear. He watched his brother leave for a moment before transforming himself and running towards Vegeta. When he arrived at where Vegeta was thrown, he noticed a trail of bloody snow and realized Vegeta was trying to flee. He followed it until he came upon Vegeta’s bloody form faced down in the snow…he wasn’t moving. Kakarot whimpered again then quickly went up to Vegeta’s body and sniffed him to make sure he was still alive. The whimpers continued as he rolled Vegeta onto his back with his snout and paw. He studied the wound for a moment before licking Vegeta’s face, trying to bring him back to consciousness. Vegeta stirred slightly and moaned in pain. Kakarot immediately made himself comfortable by laying at Vegeta’s feet while facing him, his legs on either side of his body. He leaned his head down and began furiously licking the nasty wound. “No! K-ah! No more! Don’t-!” Vegeta began to panic as he thought he was being eaten.
However, Kakarot stopped for a moment and let some more whimpers sound and briefly touched his head to Vegeta’s, then went back to helping him heal. Vegeta calmed somewhat and finally opened his eyes to see the cub licking him. “K-Kakarot…” He breathed out painfully. The half breed suddenly hissed when he felt his wound healing and gripped one of Kakarot’s paws to make the feeling more bearable. He arched slightly and held still until his injury was completely healed. Even after it was, Kakarot kept licking it until it was red. The cub worried that his efforts weren’t good enough and seeing his friend hurt like that scared him. “K…Kakarot…Kakarot stop…stop it’s healed.” Vegeta demanded weakly. Kakarot obeyed his command then rested his head on the smaller to keep him warm from the still falling snow. His big head practically covered Vegeta’s lithe body, but Vegeta did and said nothing for a while as they watched the morning steadily turn into the afternoon.
When that happened, Vegeta finally started to push weakly at Kakarot to get off of him. “Okay, I’m fine now. Let me up.” Kakarot hesitated but did as he was told and moved off of the other. He stood and watched Vegeta inspect where the hole used to be in his torn shirt. Vegeta brushed the healed wound in awe. He still couldn’t get over the fact that it took seconds for something to heal if Kakarot just licked it. He tried standing up then and wobbled before falling back down. He shook his head slightly when he felt dizzy for standing up so quickly then narrowed his eyes at his legs and looked around to notice just exactly how much blood he lost. He looked to Kakarot then, who lay down beside him, a quiet command to get on his back. Vegeta growled at the help. “If you think I’m going to ride you back to the castle, then you can forget it! I don’t need your help!” He stood again and staggered, but managed to stand…only to take a few steps and fall forward on his hands and knees. His head spun again as he growled at how weak he was. “Damn it!” He eyed the cub again, who quietly watched him, but stayed where he was. Vegeta silently cursed himself before making his way over to the cub. He stumbled on his way, but caught himself on the cub’s back. He tried pulling himself up, but was having trouble. Kakarot helped him by using his snout to lift Vegeta on top of him. When Vegeta made it on top, he didn’t bother getting into a sitting position; instead he stayed lying down. His fingers gripped the thick soft fur of the cub and rubbed his face against his slightly, but stopped himself as soon as he found out he was doing that.
When Kakarot was sure Vegeta wasn’t falling off any time soon, he stood then slowly and carefully made his way back. Halfway there, Vegeta stated the reason he went outside in the first place. “We need food.” Kakarot snorted softly as if to say ‘you’re not hunting anytime soon,’ but he knew he was right nonetheless. When they reached their temporary home, Kakarot easily made his way in through the door-less castle and trotted up the staircase, only to face a dilemma, the door was too small. He snorted again and pushed his way in with his head, causing the stone wall to give and crumble. He waited a minute or so for the stones to stop falling before cautiously entering their bedroom. He reached the pile of pillows he slept on the night before and laid next to them so Vegeta could lay on them. Once he was comfortable, Kakarot was about to leave when he spoke. “We can’t stay here. The rest of them will surely know where we are.” Kakarot made no sound or give any confirmation that he understood. He knew they couldn’t go anywhere soon, not when the full moon is out for the next few nights.
Ugh look at all those cut scenes. I’m getting lazy. v.v Then again, I’d do anything to keep from getting writer’s block. I should put it in my stories more often. Either way, I don’t think I wrote this very well. Seems like I should’ve switched around a couple paragraphs, but no matter how many times I read it, I can’t figure out which ones, but…oh well. By the way, Ruse is on the border of Bulgaria and Romania, in case anyone was wondering. I didn’t make it up. :p
