Prologue

Warnings: some degree of spoilers, set after the series, but not taking into account the events of the Movie. So I suppose that its AU, to a degree. If you want to get technical.

Brigadier General Roy Mustang sighed as he eyed the piles of paperwork on his desk that he was supposed to be finishing. This was not the way things were supposed to work out. Both men he had cared for the most were gone. First Maas, and now Fullmetal had gone where he could not follow, could not order him to come back to him. Never again would he see those beautiful golden eyes spark with pride upon a new find, or narrow in fury when teased. It had been almost a full year since Ed had disappeared through that gate, and Roy hadn’t even been there to try to stop him, or even to give him a last goodbye. Just like Maas. No goodbye, no warning, he was just gone. Gone.

Now the tears were welling up, and he angrily wiped his eyes, refusing to cry. It wasn’t that he was afraid of being seen, everyone else had already gone home for the day, it was the principle of the thing. He, Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist, shed tears over that little foul-mouthed sprite of a boy? That thought in itself wrung a wry smile from his lips, as he knew damn well that Edward was no longer that child that he had seen near death in Riesenbool all those years ago. He had grown into a beautiful young man, with his flowing honey hair, and muscular body. And those eyes… looking at him in half-lidded passion as Roy moved inside him…. NO! He would not let himself think those thoughts. Those days were gone now, and Roy simply had to make himself accept that.

Even while thinking this, Roy was pushing his chair back from his desk, and walking over to his couch. His promotion came with a new office, new desk, new everything, but he had insisted upon keeping this couch. It was special to him, too much so to give up, especially now. He sank back on the cushions and closed his eyes, letting his mind drift to memory
