Losing Grip

It was a cold, gray, rainy day at the Sanc kingdom on that May twenty-fourth early morning, but the occupants of the office were paying no more attention to the outside world than they had been the night before. Six members of a team sat around the round black conference table, blinds closed, and artificial lighting hanging from the ceiling placed in the middle of the room. Each person staring at the others placed across from them. Three peace members and three members of the defense force known as the Preventers. Not one looking the least bit happy about the situation that they had been discussing the last four hours.

\"No,\" The woman on the left side, with the cornflake blonde hair, and crystal blue eyes finally said, breaking the silence that had fallen over the room.

\"My sister is right. The whole plan would undermine our Peace operations and preparations with the leaders of the kingdom.\" The platinum blonde, ice blue eyed man agreed.

\"I tend to agree with them, I\'m afraid. I understand the concerns you three are feeling about the drug and weapon smuggling they are being accused of, but if word were to get out that we had pushed for this, agreed, or otherwise everything we\'ve worked for the last three and a half months would be ruined. It is too much to loose friendly relations with them, they are the last to be apart of the Peace we have gained between Space and Earth. You must understand the negative impact the mission you are suggesting would do to our plans,\" Came the last blonde\'s reply.

\"Councilor Winner, we understand your concerns as well, but you must understand that none of this would affect you. We don\'t plan on letting this get out,\" The raven haired Asian spoke.

\"Lt. Chang, as much faith as I have in you, you can not guarantee the mission will not end up being botched. We can not allow this to happen behind our backs, acting as though we have no idea it is happening,\" Zechs answered

\"Look Councilor Merques ...\" The woman with rounded spectacles went to say.

\"Are we not making ourselves clear? You cannot guarantee that the mission will not fail. Any of your field agents could easily mess up, and, in the end, we would be at a loss. I will not, we will not allow such a thing to happen it is much too risky.\" Quatre interrupted.

\"President Dorlain, I will personally see to the mission myself. I can guarantee a successful mission where others can not.\" The chocolate brown haired Asian man stated with abrupt surety.

Silence befell the room once more, everyone staring at the man across the table who had spoken. Two calm and one wide eyed expression greeted his response.

\"But Heero, I ...\"

Heero quickly ran down the empty corridor, he had only, at most, fifteen minuets to finish the objective before someone would find the dead men, one of them his partner Jake Spenson. The idiot had ended up costing them complete secrecy by tripping up and notifying one of the many guards of there were abouts. He had known better than to bring a partner in on this, but he had over estimated Spenson\'s ability, a miss calculation on his part. Heero glared at his reflection in a window as he quickly ran by, no time to berate himself over things like that now, he would do it after he completed the mission.

Turning a corner he skidded to a stop slamming himself back against the wall where he had come from. A platoon of men waiting for him on the other side firing wildly at the spot he had just been milliseconds ago. Once again Heero had miscalculated something important. Somewhere along the line he must have become soft in his abilities to calculate perfectly. Cursing under his breath he glanced around the corner to photographically remember where his opponents were so the next time he looked he would shoot to kill.

Pounding sounded on Relena\'s bedroom door jerking her up straight in her bed and from her sleep. Glancing over on the right side of the bed, forgetting momentarily that the man she was married to would not be there, she panicked before recollection took hold. Grabbing her white gold trimmed dressing gown she wrapped it tight around her bodice and walked calmly to the door of her room, her french braid swaying slightly with her movements. Swiftly clicking the switch to the room lights on, she unlocked her door, and opened it enough for only her face to be seen by the disrupter of sleep.

\"Lt. Chang?\" She questioned puzzled before the implications of his presence sunk in. \"I\'ll get dressed.\"

With that she closed her door before Wufei could say one thing to her.

--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00

\"He\'s still alive but the odds are highly against him, but back during the war we all had worse odds.\" Lt. Chang informed Relena Dorlain Yuy.

\"How did this happen?\" She asked calmly.

\"His partner alerted one of the guards, was killed, and now Heero is cornered. He has met the mission parameters, he has the information we need to take down the leaders involved with the smuggling, but he still needs to escape. He\'s been asking for back up for the last half hour.\" He answered her coolly.

\"Wasn\'t no back up part of the plan we agreed on Lt Chang?\" She questioned while entering the room.

\"Well yes, but with the fact that he has the proof we need we could make an exception. You are, of course, the only one who can make that decision President Dorlain.\" He replied firmly.

\"I see...\" Relena murmured in return.

// Damn it! I need back up. Send at least ten men to extract me and the information I have. You know you can do this. I\'m running low on ammunition, and I\'ve been grazed by a bullet on my right leg upper thigh and left upper arm. Not mortal wounds but they are slowing down my reaction times.\\ Sounded the radio in the middle of the room gun fire cracking over Heero\'s voice making it difficult to here what he was requesting.

\"President Dorlain have you made a decision yet?\" Asked Cornel Une.

\"I need a moment to decide.\"

\"Heero, I\'m so happy! We\'re finally together!\" Relena cheered tears in her eyes and arms wrapped firmly around Heero\'s neck.

\"I know Relena, so am I.\" He said back to her a smile on his face holding her just as firmly.

\"Oh Heero I love you so much!\" She exclaimed before placing her lips against his.

~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~

\"President Dor-\" Une went to say.

\"A moment please!\" Relena interrupted frustrated. \"Things like this can\'t be decided with a flick of the finger Cornel Une.\"

\"Forgive me President Dorlain. I just figured that with the two of you....\"

\"Well I guess you thought wrong.\" Relena replied cold as ice.

Wufei stood to the right of Relena knowing all to well why she wasn\'t making the quick decision to save her husband like she would have any other time. She seriously doubted his love for her, and although leaving him stranded for that reason was the wrong one, the right decision was to leave him there without back up. For once Wufei believed that the end might justify the means.

Looking up at Une he could see she was quite taken aback by Relena\'s outburst and reluctance to not just save Heero. She had been disgusted by the fact the only one who could make the decision was Relena, and like Heero she had put to much faith in Relena\'s blind undying love to think any other outcome would come of this. Yet Wufei also knew that Heero had been less supporting of her as the years had gone by. He had started out loving her in some way, but now he was simply holding on because he could use her to get his way. Hopefully Relena would make the right decision even if it was for the wrong reasons.

// Are you people listening! I\'m having difficulty keeping the enemy at bay. I need Fucking back up! \\ Came Heero\'s voice and more gun shots from the radio on the table.

Glancing at Relena, Wufei watched Relena\'s eyes narrow at the radio and then her face contort in indecision. This was going to be a close call he could tell. This was one of those times that crossing his fingers and hoping that lady luck was on there side. Something to that effect anyway Wufei thought to himself, and started to do just that.

Relena closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself. Was it worth the peace talks to save him just so she could continue her life happy? Was her life happy or was she lieing to herself? Heero could be so one minded that he would forget about her sometimes it was what she loved about him. The way he would be so focused on what he believed that even sustaining himself became secondary. Yet was he ignoring her on purpose, was she only there for him to use? She was finding it hard to excuse him for the things he had been doing.

\"Heero you will be there won\'t you. It wouldn\'t look very good without you there supporting me. In fact it will probably look suspicious. Heero are you listening to me?\" Relena yelled after him while he quickly walked down the stairs to the black car Duo was leaning against.

\"Neh, Heero answer her will ya?\" Duo asked Heero.

\"Yeah okay Relena.\" Heero replied dismissively.

\"You promise Heero?\"

\"Yeah sure.\"

\"Alright then, I\'ll wait for you on the steps out front okay! Please try not to be late!\"

\"Okay whatever.\" Heero finished getting into the car and slamming the door.

Duo shrugged his shoulders as an apology and waved to Relena before sliding into the driver\'s seat of the vehicle. Relena waved as they drove off a sad look to her eyes.

--00--00--00

Relena stood on the top step waiting for Heero, the cold winter wind of Sanc numbing her exposed skin and working on the rest of her. Shivering but standing her ground waiting for her husband, repeating over and over again in her head he was just late and he was trying his hardest to make it. Her blue, off the shoulder, dress that she wore to match Heero\'s eyes was starting to get soaked by the winter rain, and her hair she had placed in a messy bun with curls falling carelessly about her head was beginning to look like a rec.

Walking out of the front doors Wufei placed his hands upon her shoulders making her jump and turn to look at him. Watching her eyes go from expectant joy to a flat sadness almost had him faulter in what he was about to say, but in the end decided it was best that she hear it from him.

\"President Dorlain, Yuy, he\'s probably not coming tonight.\" He told her quietly.

\"No, no, he promised me. I\'m sure he\'ll come, and when he does I\'ll be right here to greet him.\" She replied not even believing her own words.

\"Okay, but you\'ll catch a cold if you do not get out of this winter weather. Come inside the doors and wait for him there. I\'m sure he\'d understand if you waited for him there.\" He answered saving her from completely embarrassing herself.

Turning and walking back to the doors, she bowed her head as fresh tears began to fall. She knew just as Wufei did that Heero wasn\'t coming, he had once again left her without support. She was to walk around and greet people be her-peace-talking-friendly-person-self without her husband.

\"Thank you Wufei.\" She whispered to him.

\"You’re welcome Relena.\" He replied quietly. \"In your room is another dress just like the one you are wearing, and there is a hair dresser waiting for you as well.\"

Smiling more to herself she nodded her thanks and understanding to Wufei. They needn\'t explain more to one another than that, and for that she was truly thankful. Wufei had always been so good at allowing her, her dignity even when she felt she had none.

~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~

Looking over at Wufei she wondered what was going through his mind right then. Was he thinking she would save Heero merely because they were together like Une had? Or was he assuming nothing until she spoke her decision? He was more likely to be assuming nothing at this point. It always seemed that he reserved judgment until he had all the facts. He really had grown up over the years she thought distractedly. Shaking her head to order her thoughts she had come to a decision at last, now all she had to do was speak it.

// Look I\'m Relena Dorlain\'s husband. We all know what her choice is, now send back up Une! Chang come on just make the decision without her and we just won\'t tell her about this. If you leave me here… SHIT! \\ Heero went silent long enough to fire his automatic weapon in a series of successions.

Relena stepped forward toward the radio and placed one pink manicured finger on the button to transmit to Heero. Pressing down she paused, taking a deep breath, before talking into the microphone.

\"Heero, Heero are you alright?\" She questioned concerned.

// Relena?! Thank god. Have you told them to send reinforcements yet? I really need them. \\ Heero replied firing again.

\"Heero listen to me for once. I\'m not sending reinforcements.\" She answered calmly.

Une jumped and stared in shock at Relena unable to believe what she had just heard. Wufei visibly relaxed and a small smile spread across his face.

// What do you mean you\'re not sending-\\

\"Heero the deal was you were to do this alone. If I send in help to rescue you then the Peace party will draw back and my years of peace talks and conferencing will have been for nothing, because that Earth territory will never join us.\"

// But-\\

\"Listen to me; you are not worth compromising my goal of complete peace. Quatre, my brother, and I have worked to long and to hard for this. Your on your own Heero, but I\'m sure ,since you promised us that you wouldn\'t botch the mission, that you\'ll find a way to get out and complete the mission fully.\"

// Relena just send five people then. I\'ll direct them from where we meet, we\'ll escape and the mission will be fine.\\

Relena straitened her back and her blood ran cold. Eyes growing hard she frowned in disgust, and she heaved a sigh of frustration. He still wasn\'t taking her seriously and he still thought that she was blindly following him. She knew now, for sure, he never truly cared for her causes he had only been using her. What he had just said proved it.

Without looking at anybody she said out loud. \"Wufei I need a moment with my husband alone. if you would please vacate the room, Une you as well.”

\"President Relena that is not allowed.\"

\"Maybe you didn\'t here me.\" Relena said turning to Une and glaring at her. \"Get out. I need a moment with my husband.\"

\"Of course, forgive me.\" Une replied turning away and walking out the door.

\"How long are you going to need?\" Wufei asked as he passed Relena.

\"Not even five minuets.\" She replied.

\"Right.\" He said closing the door behind him.

// Relena are you still there? \\ Heero asked over the radio.

\"Yes Heero, I\'m still here.\" She replied.

//When are you sending reinforcements? \\

\"You never cease to amaze me Heero, at your ability to be so one minded. I\'m not sending you reinforcements. You agreed that this was a partner mission; it is not my fault that you are the only one alive. You messed up in choosing who you took. We even warned you that the whole mission was not a good idea. I\'m not helping you Heero, just like you never help me.\" She finished in a deadly whispered tone.

// Re....lena? \\ Heero said sounding a little unsure.

\"You heard me Heero. I\'m not helping you anymore. Why should I? You never supported me to begin with. You were using me to pull strings. So I\'m cutting the strings myself Heero. I\'m sure that in your one minded capable hands you\'ll find a way out and when you do there will be divorce papers waiting for you. Good luck dear.\" She said walking away from the radio towards the door.

// You can\'t do this just because, suddenly, you\'re pissed at me Relena! That\'s not even morally right! God DAMMIT!! Relena you can\'t do this! \\ was the last thing she heard before the door closed behind her.

--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00

Duo whistled high to low as Relena slammed the door behind her and walked away finalizing her decision to let Heero fix his own problem. He had renewed respect for the gal now. It took nerves of steel to do what she just did to Heero over a radio. Hearing the door click open and close behind him he turned to face Wufei.

\"Well?\" Wufei asked looking at the screen.

\"She told him off and walked out.\" Duo replied with a smirk.

\"Good he needed that. You know what to do right?\"

\"Of course. I already did it. There was never a Relena in that room, in fact, the whole thing never happened. Heero made the decision for the mission and that’s all they’ll ever know. That\'s assuming he gets caught in the end.\" Duo said turning back to the screens popping out a diskette. \"There ya go boss man.\"

Taking the disc from Duo Wufei turned back to the door saying over his shoulder. \"This will have to be kept as a home video I think.\"

Duo laughed as he replied. \"It sure should be \'Fei.\"

--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00

Relena only made it around the fourth corner, a floor up from the radio room, before she broke down, fell to her knees placing her hands over her face, and began to cry. She had not chosen her answer for the right reason and she knew she was in the wrong for it. How could she be so young still to choose the fate of real peace over Heero just because of a lovers spat, and what was worse was the thought if she was still so blind to the truth. She knew she would have chosen Heero over true peace and it made her sick to her stomach to think about it.

\"President?\" Came the question from behind in a low baritone.

\"Just go away I wish not to be seen this way.\" She replied to him.

\"You did do the right thing, even if it was for the wrong reasons Relena.\" He answered her stepping closer.

\"You mean to tell me you do not think less of me Chang Wufei?\" She questioned through her tear stained hands.

\"No, in the same position I may not have been so elegant.\" He said kneeling next to her and placing a hand on her shoulder.

\"You, handle it worse than me? You have the most control next to Heero.\"

\"Not when it comes to Yuy I don\'t.\"

\"You two don\'t like each other much do you?\" She said lifting her face from her hands and sniffing unlady like.

\"No not really, but we don\'t hate each other either. We just are, I suppose. The two of us know if someone needs to make a hard decision who to go to. It\'s a mutual agreement.\"

\"That doesn’t make sense to me.\"

\"It doesn\'t need to; it’s between Yuy and me.\"

\"They\'re going to find out I was involved and the true peace will be ruined.\"

\"No they won\'t.\" Wufei replied holding up the disc so Relena could see it.

\"You...\" She breathed in surprise.

\"No Maxwell.\"

\"He saw?\" She questioned eyes widening.

\"And he thought it was great. I\'m sure he has found new respect for you.\"

\"You?\" She asked.

\"I have more respect for you than I had before Mrs. Relena.\" He replied with a smile standing up and offering her a hand.

Taking his hand she stood up as gracefully as she could. \"You respect me?\" She inquired raising an eyebrow.

\"We may not have the same views on many things Mrs. Relena but I respect your dedication to them. You are a very strong woman.\"

\"Thank you Wufei, I needed to hear that.\" She smiled dabbing at her eyes with the cloth Wufei handed her.

\"You\'re welcome President Dorlian.\" And with the placement of the title before her name the feeling went from casual to business.

\"I wish to go back to my room Lt. Chang.\"

\"Of course.\" He nodded directing her in the right direction.

--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00--00

Heero sat in his hospital bed glaring at the white wall adjacent from him, arms crossed over his chest waiting for Wufei to return with news he wanted to hear. The door clicked open to his left and alerted him that company had arrived and he turned to be surprised to see Relena standing in the doorway.

\"Heero.\" She sad politely.

\"Relena.\"

\"I am glad that you made it out alright without notifying the territory that it was you.\" She continued with a smile.

\"Yeah whatever.\" He replied gruffly.

\"I understand that you are mad and why, but I made the right choice in the end.\"

\"For the wrong reasons.\"

\"True, but you married me for the wrong reason as well Heero.\"

\"I did love you once.\"

\"That was a long time ago Heero, I know that now, and I\'m not mad at you.\"

\"So we\'re still getting divorced?\" He questioned her.

\"Of coarse we are why wouldn’t we be?” She inquired back.

\"Because it\'s mutually beneficial for the two of us to stay together.\" He answered mater of fact.

\"Heero you don\'t get married, or even stay married because it\'s politically, publicly, or otherwise beneficial. You do it because you are in love with one another, and it has to be real love something neither of us really ever had. We were both in the wrong.\" She concluded.

\"So do we have a court date?\"

\"Not yet.\"

\"The papers that were supposed to be waiting for me?\"

Blushing slightly she replied. \"I said that to get my point across.\"

\"I realized that after you stopped replying to me. While I was escaping I realized what you had said was true and that I had to get out of there to, at the very least, apologize for what I had been doing.”

\"I forgive Heero.\" She answered him bending down to hug him. \"We will stay friends won\'t we?\"

\"I don\'t see why not.\" He said.

\"Good, I\'m happy then.\"

End

Yay I finished something!!!!!! I named this after the song by Avril Lavegne because it was the song that inspired this fic. I\'m quite happy with it actually. Sorry folks the other gundam wing characters weren\'t in there as much as some of you may have wanted, but this was mainly about Relena if you couldn\'t tell. So yeah that\'s all I have to say. If there are any miss spellings I apologize for that. I did spell check it on Live journal but I may have missed a few. Anyway for bad grammar I\'ll fix that when I get a chance. I think most of its good to go. And hopefully I stayed in the same damn tense, if not I hope you guys could follow it without to much trouble.

As for Distortion of Reality, Moving On, Colliding Dimensions, and Unity I\'m sorry about not updating them. I\'ve had not time to work on any of them and when I did I couldn\'t work on them because I\'ve had a brain block. Grr... Hopefully I\'ll get the next chapter of Unity out soon I have it half way written, I just came to a point that I can\'t get past, but I haven\'t forgotten about it.

Tootles everyone!
