Author's note: This is my first fan fiction online. And though I admire those who constantly post here, I fear I will never live up to some of your standards, though I can try. I've been reading fanfics for years but never thought I had what it took to write one and post it, but now I'll try. Please review, and please don't flame me. I don't mind mild-severe criticism but I ask that no one flames me. I tried my best for my first time.
Chapter 1: Hard Knock Life.
Deep hazel eyes stared back at a girl as she peered at herself in the mirror, her shoulder length brown hair framing her small, pale face. She had severely hoped that the transfer her guardian had put in for would be denied. But of course, it wasn't.
The last thing that she wanted was to be going to yet another school. This was the thirteenth, fourth highschool in two years, since pre-k . She had just barely made new friends, it took most of the two months she was there for. Unsurprisingly, she was being forced to say good-bye to them right as the bonds were starting to form. Why did this always happen? She just couldn't fathom an answer.
"Why another school? A private one at that?" She asked herself, seeing the reflection frown as the question slipped from her lips. "It's like he doesn't want me here. He took me in because he knew my parents, yet every time that he gazes at me he turns away, as though I had scorned him! I know how much like them I look, but I just don't get it!" An agitated growl escapes her.
She yells loudly, blazing tears threatening to fall as hazel eyes looked into themselves, watching themselves turn a deep emerald tinged gray. She huffed lightly, turning from the mirror. "All I wanted was to have a family that cared, that didn't cringe at the thought of spending time with me. Cruel Fate took that away before I could even grasp them, implant them into my memory."
She pulled a picture from a jewelry box nestled on the corener of the dressing room table she sat at. The two items were all she had to 'remember' her parents by. She stared the picture. As she did every time she pulled it from its safe place. Studying the delicate brunette curls that rested peacefully on either side of a slender, smiling face, the woman's deep blue eyes burrowed into her own. The man, holding the woman close to him, had neatly combed short blonde hair. His hazel eyes happily focused on the camera that had taken the picture. They were both so joyful, so blissful... So... Gone. She studied their faces intently; trying to pull up memories she knew weren't there.
A knock echoed from her door. "Erin, the cab is here, are you ready?" The voice was steady, firm, and at the same time also slightly melancholy.
"Why can't you take me? Why are you sending me away? I thought you cared!" She yelled in reply.
"I've been over this with you." The voice sighed wearily, as though having expected this. "It's what's best for you. It's a better school. Besides, you know I have business to take of."
"You always say that!" She screamed back, her small hands curling into fists. "I just made friends and now you're going to make me an outcast at a new school?! Again?! And that's bullshit about 'business'!" She quoted the word in a deeper voice. "You're never home! You never want to see me! It's not business, you just can't bare the site of me, can you?!" She slammed her fits against the table top with a resounding thump.
The cab out side could be heard honking; giving a notice that it was still out there. Still waiting for it's pasanger.
"Are you ready or not?" The voice urged, anger creeping. She made a frustrated sound, grabbed her bags, the jewelry box, the picture, and pulled her door open with enough force that it left a hole in the wall as it came to an abrupt stop.
"Yes," She growled at him. I am." Not giving him even a second to speak as she stomped to the front door.
"I'll send your stuff immediately, if my job permits, okay?"
"Shove it." Was all that she could say as she opened the front door. Walking as fast as her burdend body could, she flung open the cab door, threw her stuff in, and made to sit.
The look on her guardians face wouldn't quite allow her to slam the door before he could say a few parting words.
"Look." He said as though suddenly exaughsted of all his energy. "I do care about you, more than you could possibly understand, but I am obviously not properly equipped for this parenting thing. I'm sorry that I haven't treated you as you deserve to be treated. That I don't take more time with you, talk with you. I....." His breath hitched a bit as he bowed his head. "As much as you look like your parents, it was hard enough for me to say yes to take you, however your parents asked me in their will to do just that. It's been like looking at their ghosts whenever I look at you. That's why I have to do this, why I've done what I have in the past. I hope you understand, and it really is all for the best." His eyes pleaded with her to accept this.
"Whatever." She said, turning away from him. "I don't care. Not anymore. If you want nothing to do with me then fine. I'll finish school and be out of your life forever. I'm grateful for what you have done, though I know how hard some of it was to deal with. Thank you. For everything." A soft, but heated glare was all the she could manage as far as compassion went when she turned to face him. He knew what she meant though.
With a final wave of goodbye, a light slam of the cab door, and the sound of the engine as the car pulled away, she was gone.
Erin had had to take a plane out of the country of America to get to the school her guardian signed her up to. Somewhere in Japan. 'Figures it would be as far away as he could make it.' She thought to herself. She spoke well enough Japanese that it didn't matter she was being sent there, but she still resented it. If for nothing else, for it's distance.
It was a long trip. Even though she had enough to entertain herself with, she couldn't bring herself to do anything, not even sleep. She watched the people about her. A braided boy caught her eye as he waltzed past her, following one of the flight attendants, grinning widely.
This had been the sixth time he had walked by, and she watched him every time. He had been bugging the attendants on the plane the whole trip, not being able to stay seated no matter how many times told, and always grinning, violet eyes peering at her with every pass. At one point he even stopped at her side, tilting his head at her curiously, then grinning, resuming his walk about.
'What an odd boy.' She thought as she watched him bounce around, laughing as the flight attendant once again became annoyed with him. As he reluctantly made his way back to his seat, the lady had had quite enough; he stopped at her side once more.
"You look so sad." He gave a pouty look. "You want to come play cards with me or something? The seat next to me is free. Beside, I'm bored." His face broke into another grin.
"I'm good, actually." She said quietly. She regretted saying it instantly as his eyes widened, and his lower lip began to quiver. He gave a quick sniffle and slowly turned to go back to his seat.
"Alright," She said defeated. "You win. I'll come keep you company. Before the flight attendants eject you mid flight." He immediately bounced back.
"By the way, my name's Duo. Duo Maxwell." He held out his hand.
"Erin." She returned. "Erin Archeal. It's nice to meet you." She placed her hand in his, which he brought to his lips and kissed the top of.
"Delighted." He smirked.
Erin and Duo spent the remainder of the time on the plane engaged in game warfare, both tied for the win on their last round.
"So why are you coming to Japan?" The question came out of nowhere.
"My guardian is sending me to a private school. He says it's a well-rounded, safe, exceptional learning institute. He was never home to spend time with me, so the next best thing is to send me somewhere to be professionally baby-sat."
"You're too pretty for someone to say that. What was wrong?" He asked placing a seven to her jack, they were playing war.
"I remind him a lot of my parents. They died when I was little, and it was just too hard on him. He says looking at me was like seeing the ghosts of my parents in front of him. He couldn't bare it anymore. He had for the last twelve years." She scooped up the winning hand, lowering her head.
"That's fucked, but I guess I can kind of see where he's comin' from." Duo stated, laying his last card, a queen to her ace. "You win."
"I suppose. But anyway, this school is located somewhere on the outskirts of Tokyo. It's called Balkan's Private Academy for Gifted Children. Or something like that."
"Hey!" He yelled loudly, making her jump. "I go there! How about we ride there together?"
"I don't know. I just met you. You're nice and all, but I can't be sure-"
"I'm not gonna kidnap you, though you don't look like you'd care. Look," He pulled an ID card out of his pocket. "I have proof I go there. My ID from last year. I'm a senior this year."
"I still don't know." She saw him pout. "I suppose so. It beats taking a cab by myself and chancing getting lost."
"Cool! I hope you won't mind riding with a few other people. My friends are picking me up." She shook her head.
A short time later they where walking off the plane, all bags in hand, and were greeted by four other young males and a full-grown man. She set her bags down.
"Hey guys, I brought a friend." Duo grinned at them all stupidly.
"Who's the Onna? A stray you met to bring home?" A black haired boy asked. She glanced at him. He appeared Chinese, his hair was slicked back into a short, small ponytail, and his black eyes were unreadable.
"Her name is Erin Archeal, and she's a transfer student from America. It just so happens that she's going to be going to our school." He bounced as he talked.
She watched as four pairs of eyes began to study her intently. A short, blonde hair boy watched her with interest in his crystalline blue eyes, the gaze reminding her of her father in the only picture she carried. The boy with brown hair and long bangs, which covered one eye, only glanced at her, the only visible dark green eye skimming her facial features. While the boy with messy dark brown hair, and emotionless cobalt blue eyes seemed to search her to her very soul. So she thought.
"I guess it's okay for her to come with us, since we are heading to the same place. My name is Quatre Winner. The one glaring at you is Heero Yuy. The black haired one is Wufei Chang. And the last one is Trowa Barton." The blonde said.
Duo started to bounce again. "Yay! When we get there I'll help you find your room, then I'll show you around, and we can get your schedule. This'll be so much fun!" He made an audiable squeel of hapiness, linking his arm in hers and pulling her along side him.
"But- My bags..." She said, turning about as she reached her free arm toward her belongings.
"Rashid will grab them, just come on." Duo said, pointing at the man that had been standing with them as he gave her another tug.
"O-okay.. I'm coming. Quit pulling." She chuckled lightly. "Jeeze... You're pushy." The only response he gave her was another wide grin as he continued to pull on her arm.
The ride to the school was all but quiet thanks to Duo's constant talking. None of the others made eye contact with her, however they did look at her when she'd reply to Duo's contant string of questions.
I hope that you enjoyed, and if it's liked I'll post more, well try. It's not great, but I attempted. Please reviewe and give praise, give advice, but please don't give flames to the noobie. I tried atleast.
