A Selfish Life
------------------

Chapter One

To acknowledge the person that sat atop the hill as the defender of Earth was to admit pure truth. He was noble, kind, and always just in his actions, but to himself, he was more. Goku for many years embodied everything his friends and family had always wanted. Only recently had his own views on this subject changed. After the destruction of Cell, Goku did not walk away from the battle with the typical feelings of victory. Quite the opposite, he felt utterly defeated.

He spent his entire life in the pursuit of getting stronger so that he would be able to protect his loved ones. Now, he felt burdened by such a cause. At the battle, he stood back and watched his son, Vegeta, and Trunks try their hand at fighting Cell. The three Saiyans had done well, but it was not enough. Perhaps his hopes had been too high. For Goku, the defeat of his own kind tortured him more than it did anyone else. He wanted the task of saving the Earth passed onto another person, yet Goku had to fly in and kill Cell. He admitted that it was not entirely simple, but he had done it.

Sitting on a hill near his home, Goku contemplated the past instances of his heroism and grimaced at his new understanding of them. “Will I always be the savior?” He mouthed as he laid down on the soft grass.

Many miles away, Goku felt a power beginning to climb. He knew it was Vegeta. “Vegeta,” he spoke. ‘Vegeta must have it good.’ He thought. ‘All he has ever done is work harder for himself. Only his own desires have ever fueled him forward. Has he ever been pressed like I have?’

Never before had it been in Goku’s nature to harbor such jealousy, but he felt it now so acutely. Three months had passed since the fight with Cell. He hoped rather than believed that with time his feelings would be softened. The common occurrences of his normal life repulsed him. He avoided Chichi as much as possible.

The night after his battle with Cell, Goku and Chichi had an argument after he denied her advances. Goku did not want to touch her, and he cringed at the idea of her touching him. Chichi had told him that she would not take it personally. She said that it was just a little post-battle stress. “She doesn’t know the half of it.” He said as he stood.

He looked towards his new house. A few weeks of Chichi’s nagging was all the encouragement he needed to move out of the home he shared with his wife and son to a new Capsule home that he received from Bulma. He had chosen a spot that was removed from the society of his friends and wife. It was a quiet place, surrounded by a small wood. He enjoyed the silence.

When he had been happy with his life, he would ramble endlessly about things of no particular consequence. Now, Goku spoke to no one at length except his son. He would occasionally call Bulma for supplies for his home. “That reminds me…” Goku began walking towards his home.

Once inside, he picked up the phone from the counter and pushed the speed-dial number for Bulma. She had programmed her number and a few others into the phone when she gave him the house. She picked up after the phone after a couple rings.

“Hello. Hello?” She breathed.

“Hi, Bulma. What are you up to? You sound tired or something.” Goku tried to sound happy as he once was.

“Oh, I’m sorry, Goku. I’m just working on a couple of different projects. Vegeta has me working like a slave, trying to get his gravity room back up to full power. He fried all the electronic components after the battle with Cell.”

“That sounds like Vegeta. I’m sorry to interrupt your work.”

“No, Goku. It’s always nice to talk to you. What’s up?”

“It’s just that I ran out of a few supplies recently. I really don’t want to bother you though…”

“Of course not, Goku. You can have whatever you want. I just can’t bring it to you. That’s all. I need to get caught up on my own work. Like I said, I’ve been working for the last week on Vegeta’s gravity room.”

“Oh.” His disappoint was palpable.

“I’m sorry. I know how you feel about being around others right now. How about I leave the supplies in the smaller kitchen in the back of the house? I don’t think anyone would bother you there. I would send one of my workers out there, but I can’t spare one of them right now.”

“Its okay, Bulma. You don’t need to worry about me. Its just…” Goku began to say something when Bulma cut him off.

“I’ve got to run, Goku. I’ll leave the usual supplies out for you. Talk to you later!”

Goku heard the other line go silent. He placed the phone back on the receiver and walked towards the door. Deciding that he would take the scenic route, Goku walked towards the automatic door and took off in the sky.

He arrived on the outskirts of Capsule Corp. silently. He tried to lower his ki as much as possible so that none of his friends would be tipped off that he was at Bulma’s and get curious enough to come and see him. Goku peered around the area. It had been a long time since he had been there. He could not recall the last time he went to the small kitchen located in the back of the house. Though, he did remember where it was. He began making his way to the kitchen.

He passed through the back yard. Goku saw the gravity room off to one side of the yard, but noted that he did not hear its usual hum. That caused him no alarm, considering what Bulma told him earlier about needing to fix it.

He opened the back door to the kitchen. Goku found the supplies laid out just as his friend had promised. His stomach growled. If everything else in his life changed, his appetite did not. Goku opened one of the containers of capsules and released a capsule onto the counter. Sorting through the food, he found a few things that he could eat. Glancing around the room, Goku decided that he could enjoy a quiet meal in here and sat down at the table with his back towards the door.

Goku, immersed in consuming the much needed meal, did not notice Vegeta’s entrance until he made a noise. He turned to look at him. His eyes landed on Vegeta’s face. Vegeta did not seem concerned about Goku’s presence. ‘He must have sensed my ki when I landed.’ Goku figured. After piling a plate full of food, Vegeta seated himself on the other end of the table. The two Saiyans ate in silence. Vegeta had never been an individual to say more than he needed to, and Goku had recently adopted the same attitude. However, upon finishing a large bite of food, Vegeta opened his mouth to speak.

“Want to spar?” He said gruffly.

“Why?” Goku said without taking his eyes from his meal.

“Why?” Vegeta asked incredulously. He recovered from his shock and retorted. “That fight really did mess you up. What Saiyan wouldn’t like to spar?”

“Me.” Goku replied cooly.

“Oh. Well, excuse me. The slayer of Cell is too much of a pussy to even spar anymore.” Vegeta smirked at him.

Goku turned his attention back to his food in an attempt to ignore Vegeta, but Vegeta was not a person to be ignored.

“Oh, so that’s how it is? You swoop in and defeat Cell and won’t fight again?”

Goku grit his teeth. The insults were hitting at a deeper wound than Vegeta realized. Vegeta continued.

“That’s just like you, Clown. You finally hit your head hard enough to cause real damage. And, I heard you left that banshee. Ha! I would have loved to hear what you said to her when you were leaving.” Vegeta changed his voice slightly to sound somewhat like Goku. ‘I’m sorry, Wench, but I lost my balls in my last battle.’ Ha-ha!” Vegeta laughed loudly.

“Shut up, Vegeta.” Goku growled.

“Or what? You are too much of a baby to do anything about it now.” Vegeta teased.

“Shut up, Vegeta.” Goku said, irritated.

“Ha! Now you feel it, don’t you? That anger. I had hoped that the savior of the universe wasn’t a total wimp.” He smirked.

Those words brought forth all the feelings of resentment in Goku. He lost his composure and unleashed his fury on Vegeta. Before Vegeta could react, Goku had him pinned against the wall with his fingers around his throat.

“I told you to shut up! Why can’t you stop?!” He yelled in Vegeta’s face.

Vegeta only stared back in disbelief. He opened his mouth to speak, but words could not come out because of Goku’s hand on his throat. This snapped Goku back into reality.

“I’m sorry, Vegeta. I don’t know why I did that.” He said as he released Vegeta. Goku turned, collected his supplies, and quickly exited the room. Vegeta was left in a destroyed kitchen, wondering what had just happened.
