Chapter 22: Love Hurts

Death wasn't painful from what he remembered from the first time. But passing on and being dragged back into life again was horrendous. His body slowly healed itself overnight as he drifted in and out, like a bad dream.

As Gohan opened his eyes and found himself alone in a puddle of his own dried up blood, an intense wave of depression followed. Everything Cell said as he strangled him to death rang through his head.

He was done. All he could do was cry.

The android gradually made his way back to his room, darkly excited about what he was going to find. The saiyan in question was on his feet at last, leaning against the wall. He felt waves of distress amd sadness coming from him.

"Well, there he is," said Cell.

Gohan just stood there, scared and alone and more fragile than ever. He didn't know who to trust, if anybody. But as soon as he looked at Cell, he felt anger rising. The only thing he looked forward to, even morbidly so, was his death, an end to all of his turmoil. And the android had taken that away from him too, along with so much else.

"Why?" he asked pathetically, tears still staining his face. "Why are you doing this to me?"

"I gave you what you wanted. You wanted me to kill you. And I did. And I'll keep doing it for as long as it gratifies me."

"Please just end it. For good. Just make it stop!" he cried, his arms hugging his own body as he regressed further into himself.

The android stepped forward, taking the distressed saiyan into his arms. Gohan responded the way Cell expected him to; he relaxed, letting his head fall against him. He felt better with a little physical contact and affection. And Cell knew it.

Gohan raised his head, searching desperately for a kiss. When he found one, it felt amazing, but he wondered why it felt so wonderful to be in the very hands that strangled him to death not twelve hours ago.

"This is so messed up. It wasn't supposed to be this way."

"You thought you'd get peace? The only peace you will ever get it is when you're alone with me in the dark."

Gohan groaned at himself as he dragged himself from Cell's less than reassuring embrace, running his hands over his face to erase all evidence of his tears.

"Frieza is here," said the android. "Mute your power."

Gohan nodded, building his walls back up once more, the only sign of his breakdown showing in the redness of his eyes.

"I suggest that we observe, find out exactly what we're dealing with."

Gohan couldn't believe the transformation in Frieza. He looked terrible, yet powerful. Bulky, strong, eins popping out of his skin along with blue tinges to his skin. He was with Dodoria, Zarbon nowhere to be found, much to Gohan's secret amusement.

"He looks worse every time we see him," said Guldo quietly.

"His energy... " Gohan remarked. "It's... wrong."

"Twisted," said Burter.

As Gohan could only watch as his father amd friends were sedated and pushed around once again, he couldn't help but notice Cell suddenly disappear.

Cell walked into his room, slamming the door behind him. He saw the mess still on the floor that consisted of Gohan's dried up blood. He was disturbed by how Frieza had become so powerful.

"Lowered yourself into hiding, have we?"

He chuckled now that the game of hide and seek was over. Cell looked at Frieza with an insolent smile, not showing any fear that he may or may not have been feeling.

"You knew I was here all along, did you?"

"You should have finished Zarbon off completely before you dumped him."

"Ah yes, how is Zarbon? His face healing up?"

"You did quite a job on him, he's isolated himself completely. I should remind my soldiers not to get on your bad side."

"I wish I could take credit for that, but I'm afraid that wasn't my work."

"So I gather it was the work of your pet saiyan? I didn't think he had it in him, I gathered that he took after his father."

"You have no idea. He couldn't be more different from Goku. He's the most volitile thing I've ever seen."

"Where is he?"

"Nice try," laughed Cell.

"So protective. How sweet."

"I don't share my toys."

"I'm not saying you should, but you should just hand him over if you know what's good for you. I usually prefer virgins, but those were rare at his age, especially now that the saiyans are gone. Does he fight back or just let you have your way?"

"You force them, do you? Where's the fun in that?"

"You have a performer? Those were equally as rare. Very few saiyans were willing to hand themselves over to me. Those ones tended to last a little longer before they became boring."

"If it became boring, then you mustn't be very good at it."

Cell was aware that he'd hit a nerve; Frieza still had the same bratty personality as before in spite of his power up.

"I managed to acquire these from Hell a few days ago. I thought that you'd might like them, seeing as you haven't had any for a while."

Frieza threw something on to the bed and chuckled as he left. He was right to feel victorious as Cell began to look uneasy; it was a small brown bag, much like ones that kept the senzu beans, but it contained something that had a great impact on the android.

Cell was surprised that Gohan hadn't asked him how his appearance had drastically changed since the Cell Games, how he'd become less heavy and shrunk to a more human height; they were from a plant grown in Hell known as anvra, and it's antranide seeds were strictly prohibited due to their opiate-like properties - and not long after he died, Cell became hooked on them for years in a bid to cope with losing everything. Doctor Gero had only programmed him to win and antranide became his way of dealing with feelings of defeat that he didn't fully understand at the time.

Cell couldn't believe how hard it was to be in the same room as them. How could these small insignificant grey things have such a hold on him? He assumed that nobody knew apart from Frieza, due the the alien practically stalking him for years. He was partly grateful that he'd found power elsewhere so that he'd leave him alone. This was the first time that he had a true insight into what went on in Gohan's head; this must be how Gohan felt when he experienced the urge to cut himself.

He sheepishly took one out of the bag and stared at it. He physically jumped when the door opened again.

"What's that?" Gohan asked, walking closer.

An evil thought suddenly appeared in Cell's mind.

"Its called antranide. This is the seed of the anvra plants that grow in Hell," he said. Gohan seemed interested by what he said, seeing the bag on the bed.

"Where did you get all these?"

"I stole them from one of Frieza's soldiers a few days ago," he lied. "They have opium properties."

"Never tried opiates before," said Gohan, his curiosity still peaked.

"I have," admitted Cell. "They're just about the only thing that works for me."

"We have opiates on earth, you know."

"I know, but they aren't as strong as these," said the android, staring at the seed in his hand. "Two of three of these is enough to stop me from thinking."

"Well since cocaine has no affect on you, then those things would probably kill me... "

"Want to have some fun?" he said. Gohan looked a little apprehensive. "No need to be scared, I won't give you enough to kill you, just enough make the world fall away."

Cell outstretched his arm to Gohan, who hesitantly took the anvra out of his hand; it was about half the size of a sensu bean, abnormally round and a metallic grey colour.

"What do I do with it?"

"You eat it," replied Cell, putting two into his mouth just before he spoke.

Gohan watched as Cell seemed to relax somewhat, closing his eyes and embracing whatever trip he was about to go on. Taking a deep breath, he put the anvra into his mouth.

It was soon night again, from what they could tell. Gohan had experienced the strangest day of his entire life; he'd died horribly, and came back again as practically living dead, he saw Frieza again, who looked horrifying; and he'd just spent the past half hour or so feeling as if he was floating on air.

He was sat on the floor against the bed, slowly moving his head around to the left where Cell was; he couldn't remember when the android joined him on the floor exactly. It took a while for the rest of the room to catch up with him every time he looked elsewhere.

"Cell... "

The android didn't answer, in fact he barely heard his name being mentioned.

"I don't feel right... "

Gohan began to feel... wrong. Like he was nowhere. He liked being away from the world but he'd become so detached that his body no longer felt like his own. Then he made the snap decision to cling on the only way he knew how.

Cell was out of it, so out of it that he didn't realise that Gohan had moved until he was on top of him. Gohan didn't hesitate to kiss him, but grew frustrated when Cell only weakly responded to him; nevertheless, he persisted until the android grew aware of what was going on. Gohan felt relieved that he was finally acknowledging him, but barely.

"Open your mouth," he panted desperately. Cell stared at him blankly for a few seconds before complying; Gohan didn't hesitate to invade him with his tongue, it seemed to bring Cell back with a jolt. The android kissed him back with just as much enthusiasm, but only for a few seconds as he gestured at him to stop.

When Gohan kept trying to kiss him. Cell pushed him away hard; the saiyan ended up on the floor, startled at what just happened.

"Sorry," he said quietly, his eyes tired from the shock. Cell caught his breath again, his mood suddenly changing as if he'd only just realised that he wasn't alone. The android looked at him almost lustfully.

"Need the distraction, do you? Is the high too much for you to handle?"

"I need... "

"I need you... "

Cell gave a small, curious smile, reaching his hand out to Gohan. As Gohan took it, Cell pulled him closer. The android sat up, moving in closer to kiss his neck. Gohan sighed softly into it, the android pulled back until their noses were touching, his fingers caressing his jaw and chin.

"What do you want to happen right now?" he whispered.

"I don't know... I don't care... "

Gohan felt the tip of his tongue tickling his bottom lip, the sensation was overly stimulating.

"Can you trust that I won't just kill you again?"

"I don't care. I can't go back to them."

"Do you love me?"

"Yes," said Gohan deliriously, not restraining his feelings at that moment. He felt Cell smiling against his lips.

"Love hurts, doesn't it?"

Cell shoved him off him again, Gohan landing with a thud on his back. The saiyan just stayed there this time, melding into the cold floor, letting the high swallow him whole again.
